[0013] Techniques described in the present document may be used for achieving improvements to the operation of wireless devices in a wireless network.

[0014] Section headings are used in the present document only to improve readability and do not limit scope of the disclosed embodiments and techniques in each section to only that section. Furthermore, some embodiments are described with reference to Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Fifth Generation (5G) New Radio (NR) or Sixth Generation (6G) standard for ease of understanding and the described technology may be implemented in different wireless system that implement protocols other than the NR or 6G protocol.

[0015] 1. Initial discussion

[0016] In 5G New Radio (NR) , massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) is regarded as a key technology to enhance the performance of mobile communication networks. By deploying a large number of antennas at the base station (BS) , MIMO can effectively expand coverage and suppress inter-user interference. In future 6G systems, the scale of antenna array at the BS is expected to increase even further.

[0017] Accurate channel state information (CSI) is critical to the performance of MIMO systems. Currently, CSI at the BS is mainly acquired through sounding reference signals (SRS) or feedback from user equipment (UE) . However, due to the limited transmission power of UEs, uplink SRS is highly susceptible to noise and interference. On the other hand, feedback-based schemes provide more accurate channel measurements, but the feedback overhead limits the quantization accuracy of the CSI. To address this issue, a new CSI feedback method is considered to assist in improving the accuracy of SRS-based channel estimation.

[0018] In mobile communication systems, both the BS and the UE are typically equipped with multiple antennas to form a MIMO system, which improves spectral efficiency through techniques such as spatial multiplexing and beamforming. To ensure reliable transmission performance, the BS requires accurate downlink CSI. In time-division duplexing (TDD) systems, CSI can be obtained by exploiting channel reciprocity, where the BS estimates the downlink channel by measuring the SRS transmitted by the UE in the uplink. However, due to the limited transmission power of UEs, the SRS measurements are highly susceptible to noise. Existing 3GPP specification enhance estimation accuracy by repeating SRS transmissions, but this repetition reduces the overall SRS capacity and may introduce interference among SRS signals from different UEs.

[0019] An alternative approach for acquiring CSI at the BS is through downlink channel measurement and codebook-based feedback by the UE. After receiving the downlink channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) , the UE estimates the channel matrix and selects the most suitable codeword from a predefined codebook according to certain criteria. The selected codeword is then reported to the BS, and the index of the codeword is referred to as the precoding matrix indicator (PMI) . Additional feedback information may include the channel quality indicator (CQI) and the rank indicator (RI) . Benefiting from the high transmit power of the BS, the UE can obtain more accurate channel measurements. However, the feedback overhead imposes a limitation on the quantization accuracy of the codewords.

[0020] In future 6G systems, the scale of antenna arrays will continue to grow, leading to a substantial increase in feedback overhead. As a result, relying solely on SRS or conventional feedback mechanisms is insufficient for the BS to obtain accurate CSI. Therefore, this invention proposes a novel feedback scheme designed to enhance the accuracy of SRS-based channel estimation while maintaining low feedback overhead.

[0021] 2. Introduction to embodiments

[0022] Various techniques are disclosed by grouping as different embodiments under different section headings. It will be understood, however, that techniques described in one section may be combined with techniques described in another section in a non-conflicting manner.

[0023] 3. Embodiment Examples #1:

[0024] Embodiments described in the section highlight, among other things, features of the CSI reporting procedure.

[0025] The network side transmits reference signal configuration and CSI reporting configuration to the UE. The UE receives the configured reference signals and determines the CSI based on the CSI reporting configuration, and then reports the CSI to the network side. The reported CSI includes, but is not limited to, long-term statistical channel information. Some examples of the specific format of the reported CSI will be described in Embodiment Examples #2 / 3.

[0026] The granularity of the long-term statistical channel information may vary across different dimensions, for example:

[0027] -The reported information may be subband-specific or subband-common;

[0028] -The reported information may be polarization-specific or polarization-common;

[0029] -Given that the UE may be equipped with multiple antennas for downlink channel measurement, the reported information may be receive-antenna-specific or receive-antenna-common.

[0030] The final granularity is determined by the CSI reporting configuration and may be a combination of the above three dimensions. Correspondingly, the UE reports S≥1 instances of long-term statistical channel information, each corresponding to a specific granularity unit. For example, if the feedback is configured as polarization / receive-antenna-common, subband-specific, then S corresponds to the number of subbands defined in the CSI reporting configuration, with one piece of long-term statistical channel information provided for each subband.

[0031] Furthermore, the subbands can be defined in different ways, such as a contiguous set of resource blocks (RBs) , or a set of RBs selected at regular intervals across the bandwidth occupied by the reference signal.

[0032] Using different feedback granularities allows a trade-off between signaling overhead and CSI accuracy. For example, when the network determines that the SRS measurement is significantly affected by noise, more accurate feedback is needed, and the configuration may use subband-specific granularity. Conversely, if the SRS reliability is sufficient, subband-common granularity may be used to reduce overhead.

[0033] Upon receiving the reported CSI, the network side may use the it to assist in processing the SRS measurement results, thereby improving the accuracy of channel estimation.

[0034] The long-term statistical channel information may be obtained either from a channel matrix estimate, or from a channel covariance matrix estimate. In some embodiments, the covariance matrix R can be derived from the channel matrix H (e.g., R = HHH) . Therefore, in various embodiments, the long-term statistical channel information may be obtained via the channel matrix or via a covariance matrix thereof.

[0035] 4. Embodiment Examples #2

[0036] Embodiments described in this section highlight, among other things, methods of reporting CSI.

[0037] As described in Embodiment #1, each reported instance of the long-term statistical channel information includes indication information used to determine L≥1 basis, as well as long-term statistical values of the channel matrix projected onto these L basis.

[0038] Furthermore, the basis may be determined by spatial-domain (SD) basis and / or frequency-domain (FD) basis. It is noted that if each subband contains only one resource block (RB) , then the basis correspond solely to SD basis.

[0039] Furthermore, a basis v may be equivalently represented as

[0040] where N1, N2 are configured by the network and indicate the antenna port dimensions, typically satisfying N1N2=Nt / 2, and Nt is the number of antenna ports at the BS; G represents the number of RBs included in each subband and is also configured by the network; O1, O2, O3 are oversampling factors, configured by the network or determined according to specifications. These factors enable the UE to select the most suitable set of basis from multiple predefined orthogonal basis sets, such that the projection energy of the channel matrix onto the basis is more concentrated, thereby enabling more accurate characterization of the channel's long-term statistics;

[0041] Here,  represents the SD basis, and v3 represents the FD basis.

[0042] It should be noted that the structure of the joint SD-FD basis depends on the indexing order of the channel matrix elements. The above form assumes a traversal order where vertical antenna ports are indexed first, followed by horizontal antenna ports, and finally the RBs within each subband. If a different traversal order is adopted, the basis should be reordered accordingly. Such reordering is still considered equivalent to the form described in the present invention.

[0043] Through the reported CSI, the UE provides the network with L sets of parameters {ml, nl, pl} , which serve as the indication information for the selected basis.

[0044] When the feedback content is subband-specific, the feedback overhead can be reduced by configuring the SD basis (or FD basis) as subband-common, while the FD basis (or SD basis) are configured as subband-specific. For example, {m, n} provided by the UE may be applied to all subbands, while only pl varies across different subbands.

[0045] Furthermore, the long-term statistical values of the projection energy onto the L basis can be reported using the following methods:

[0046] 1. Reporting L normalized real values, with the maximum value being 1, along with an additional real number indicating the normalization factor.

[0047] 2. Reporting the index of the maximum among the L coefficients, assuming the corresponding value is 1, then reporting the relative values of the remaining L-1 coefficients, as well as an additional real number indicating the normalization factor.

[0048] It is noted that the purpose of reporting the normalization factor is to enable the BS to infer the absolute amplitude of the downlink channel. By combining this information with the uplink measurement results, the BS can estimate the amplitude difference between uplink and downlink channels, and thereby accurately suppress the noise and interference in the SRS-based channel estimation.

[0049] The method for obtaining long-term statistical values is not limited to a specific technique and may include, for example, averaging across multiple measurements or applying temporal filtering.

[0050] For example, assume that the complete set of spatial-frequency basis vectors forms a matrix W, which satisfies WHW=WWH=I. The downlink reference signal measurement result at time t can be denoted as ht. The projection coefficients are obtained by ct=WHht. The projection energies |ct, i|2 are then sorted, and the top L values are selected and denoted as The final reported projection energy at time t can be expressed as

[0051] Upon receiving the reported CSI, one possible method for enhancing SRS-based channel estimation is as follows. Assume that the BS obtains an uplink channel estimate h via SRS measurement. The reported CSI includes a set of basis vectors {w1, w2, …, wL} and the corresponding projection energies {a1, a2, …, aL} . The BS projects h onto each basis vector to obtain projection coefficients and then applies noise and interference suppression to derive refined estimates Here, σ2 denotes the estimated noise and interference power in the SRS-based channel measurement at the BS, and β represents the amplitude scaling factor between the uplink and downlink channels, assuming This is why the feedback content includes the normalization factor of the projection energy: only when the BS knows the absolute value of al can it accurately estimate β by combining it with the uplink channel amplitude, thus enabling more accurate suppression of noise and interference in the SRS-based estimation. Finally, the enhanced SRS-based channel estimation can be expressed as

[0052] 5. Embodiment Examples #3

[0053] Embodiments described in this section highlight, among other things, methods of reporting CSI.

[0054] As described in Embodiment #1, each reported instance of the long-term statistical channel information includes information related to the spatial-frequency or spatial-domain channel covariance matrix.

[0055] Furthermore, the reported information corresponds to the projection of the spatial-frequency or spatial-domain channel covariance matrix on a complete orthogonal basis.

[0056] Furthermore, the complete orthogonal basis used for projection may be predefined by the specification, or the specification may define multiple sets of complete orthogonal basis, among which the UE selects one set and reports the corresponding indication information to the BS.

[0057] For example, the UE measures the downlink reference signals to obtain the downlink channel matrix, which can be equivalently represented as a Nr×Nt×NRB tensor. The three dimensions of this tensor correspond to the number of UE antenna ports, the number of BS antenna ports, and the number of RBs occupied by the RS, respectively. Taking the case where the feedback granularity is subband-specific and polarization / receive-antenna-common as an example, for the n -th subband, the spatial-frequency channel covariance matrix can be computed as follows. Let

[0058] denote the downlink channel matrices corresponding to the two polarization dimensions of the BS antenna array, respectively, and Mn represents the set of RB indices included in the n-th subband. First, a vectorization operation is performed on the 2nd and 3rd dimensions of resulting in Then, the spatial-frequency channel covariance matrix is computed as:

[0059] where () T and () *denote matrix transpose and conjugate operations, respectively. It is noted that the above computation includes averaging over the receive antenna and polarization dimensions, thus exhibiting a polarization / receive-antenna-common property. Moreover, when G=1,  solely denotes spatial-domain channel covariance matrix.

[0060] Considering multiple downlink reference signal measurements, the UE should apply statistical processing to the computed covariance matrix Specifically, let  denote the covariance matrix obtained from the t-th downlink measurement. The final feedback content is then derived based on Rt, and thus possesses long-term statistical characteristics.

[0061] To enable the BS to acquire Rt as accurately as possible under limited feedback overhead, Rt can be projected onto a complete orthogonal basis. Specifically, the projection is computed as A=DRtDH, where D is a matrix composed of the complete orthogonal basis, which satisfies DHD=DDH=I.

[0062] When reporting the projection of the covariance matrix onto the complete orthogonal basis, the UE may select and report the indices and magnitude information of the L diagonal elements of the resulting matrix.

[0063] For example, the UE extracts the diagonal elements of matrix A, noting that all diagonal elements are real-valued, and selects the L elements with the largest magnitudes for feedback.

[0064] When reporting the projection of the covariance matrix onto the complete orthogonal basis, the UE may select L elements from the resulting matrix and report their corresponding indices, magnitude, and phase information.

[0065] It is worth noting that the off-diagonal elements of matrix A are complex-valued, and therefore, the phase information needs to be reported accordingly.

[0066] Upon receiving the reported information, the BS can obtain an approximation of the covariance matrix projection result A, and further reconstruct an approximate covariance matrix  Based on it, the BS can perform LMMSE (linear minimum mean square error) estimation on the SRS measurement results to suppress noise and interference, resulting in

[0067] 6. Embodiment Examples 4

[0068] Embodiments described in this section highlight, among other things, various implementations for determining long term statistical information.

[0069] For example, LSCI may use channel information that is gathered during a time interval in which M signalings related to the channel state report are received by the network device, where M is an integer at least equal to 2. Put differently, “long term” in some implementations may refer to a network-centric time line in which the CSI is accumulated through multiple reporting occurrences from the UEs.

[0070] In some embodiments, LSCI uses channel information that uses information gathered in a time interval during which N channel state reports are transmitted by the wireless device, where N is an integer at least equal to 2. Here, the notion of “long term” may be from a UE-centric perspective such that the LSCI collected information over multiple reporting occurrences from the UE perspective.

[0071] In some embodiments, LSCI comprises channel information gathered over a time interval specified in units of time, such as at least X time units. Here, X may be a positive integer such that the X units of time may 10 to 100 milliseconds or greater. Here, time units may be counted based on underlying numerology such as slot time, sub-frame time or frame time.

[0072] In some embodiments, LSCI comprises channel information gathered over at least Y occurrences of a network event. Here, Y may be a positive integer. The network event comprises reference signal receptions, channel selection or reselection, handover, or network slice reselection.
