Abstract

The present disclosure provides a method for one wireless node to send to another wireless node a measurement report containing multiple measurement values, including one measurement value with full-value quantization mapping and remaining measurement values with differential quantization mapping. In one aspect, one measurement value with the full-value quantization mapping is generated with an offset, and the measurement report contains an indication field to indicate the value of the offset. In another aspect, the measurement report contains an indication bit field to indicate which one of a first differential quantization mapping and a second differential quantization mapping is used to obtain differential values corresponding to the measurement values. This facilitates handling the case in which some measurement value (s) exceed the maximum value range of the reporting.

Description

METHOD FOR TRANSMITTING / RECEIVING MEASUREMENT REPORT AND RELATED APPARATUSESTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present disclosure relates to the field of communication systems, and more particularly, to a method for transmitting a measurement report, a method for receiving a measurement report, and related apparatuses.BACKGROUND ART

[0002] In cellular wireless communication systems developed by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) , user equipment (UE) is connected by a wireless link to a radio access network (RAN) . The RAN includes a set of base stations (BSs) which provide wireless links to UEs located in cells covered by the base station and an interface to a core network (CN) which provides overall network control. The RAN and CN each conduct respective functions in relation to the overall network. The so-called 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) system, namely, an Evolved Universal Mobile Telecommunication System Territorial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN) has been developed for a mobile access network where one or more macro-cells are supported by a base station known as an eNodeB or eNB (evolved NodeB) . Evolved from LTE, the so-called 5G or new radio (NR) systems where one or more cells are supported by a base station known as a gNB. Envisioned to succeed the current 5G networks, the 6G cellular system is the forthcoming generation of wireless communication technology.

[0003] In the modern wireless communication system, it is commonly necessary for one wireless operating node to send to another wireless operating node a measurement report that includes a set of measurement values, where each measurement value in the measurement report comes from the measurement performed on a corresponding wireless measurement resource. The measurement report can be sent periodically, semi-persistently or aperiodically. Some examples of such measurement reporting include:

[0004] ·A user equipment (UE) reports to its serving base station (BS) the signal strength measurements for a set of resources in the time / frequency / spatial domain.

[0005] ·A user equipment (UE) reports to its serving base station (BS) the interference measurements for a set of resources in the time / frequency / spatial domain, where the interference can be same-link interference (e.g., BS-to-UE interference) , cross-link interference (e.g., UE-to-UE interference) or a combination of both.

[0006] With above measurement reports, the base station can obtain a knowledge about which time / frequency / spatial domain resource (s) are potentially the good or bad candidates to be used for communication with the UE.SUMMARY

[0036] Embodiments of the disclosure are described in detail with the technical matters, structural features, achieved objects, and effects with reference to the accompanying drawings as follows. Specifically, the terminologies in the embodiments of the present disclosure are merely for describing the purpose of the certain embodiment, but not to limit the disclosure.

[0037] In this document, the term “ / ” should be interpreted to indicate “and / or. ” A combination such as “at least one of A, B, or C, ” “one or more of A, B, or C, ” “at least one of A, B, and C, ” “one or more of A, B, and C, ” or “A, B, and / or C” may be A only, B only, C only, A and B, A and C, B and C, or A and B and C, where any combination may contain one or more members of A, B, or C.

[0038] The measurement reporting generates overheads to the communication system, given it consumes the wireless channel resources in time / frequency / spatial domain while not carrying any traffic data. Therefore, it may be desirable to reduce such overhead, by bundling the measurement reports corresponding to multiple time / frequency / spatial domain measurement resources into one single report message group or message body (instead of using one report message for just one measurement resource) , and meanwhile adopting differential reporting for the multiple measurement reports in a single report message group or message body by utilizing the nature of correlations among the measurement values. Take an example in FIG. 1, where the measured values for a set of measurement resources including {i, j, k} are to be reported together in one report message group. One of them, which is the measured value for the k-th resource and denoted as mk, is directly quantized into a report value rk = Qf (mk) where Qf (·) is a first quantization function to directly quantize the full-value of a measurement (e.g., the non-differential measurement value shown in FIG. 1. For other measured values, such as {mi, mj} for i-th resource and j-th resource respectively, a report value is determined as a quantization of the difference between mi-mk and mj-mk respectively, e.g., ri = Qd (mi-mk) and rj = Qd (mj-mk) where Qd (·) is a second quantization function that quantizes the differential value and generates less number of reporting bits than Qf (·) does. The wireless operating node that receives the measurement report message group can recover the measurement values as:

[0039] Both full-value quantization function Qf (·) and differential-value quantization function Qd (·) are usually defined as two quantization mapping tables, for which the general table format are shown in Table 1 and Table 2. Assume the quantization outputs uses bits for Table 1 and bits for Table 2. In general, the differential quantization mapping table uses a fewer number of reporting bits than the full-value quantization mapping table, e.g., nd<<nf. In both tables, the first row and the last row have the open range, which generally results in larger quantization error. Depending on the quantization use case, the first row and the last row in either of the two tables may not be used so that one quantization code-point can be saved for use on the other end of the table and the number of open ranges in the quantization mapping table is reduced from two to one. For example,

[0040] ·If the measured value is never smaller than u1, the first row of Table 1 is not used.

[0041] ·If the measured value is never larger than the last row of Table 1 is not used.

[0042] ·If the reference value is chosen to be the smallest measured value across all in the report, the first row of Table 2 is not used and v1 = 0, which results in a quantization mapping table in the format of Table 3.

[0043] ·If the reference value is chosen to be the largest measured value across all in the report, the last row of Table 2 is not used, which results in a quantization mapping table in the format of Table 4 where  can be 0.

[0044] So it is motivated in the prior art to use either the largest measured value or the smallest measured value as the reference value for differential reporting.

[0049] The reporting of measurement values with differential quantization can have a reporting format as shown in FIG. 2. The report contains M reported measurement values, among which one value corresponding to either the largest or the smallest reported measurement value is reported in its full-value format with full-value quantization and the remaining M-1 values are reported in differential format with differential quantization. All the M reported measurement values are sorted in the report by the same sequential order as the corresponding M measurement resources. Therefore, one index indication field should be contained in the report to indicate which of M reported measurement value is used as reference value for differential quantization and meanwhile is reported in full-value format.

[0050] One issue in the above quantization report of measured values arises when the used reference value, which is also a measured value, is in the open range of the full-value quantization mapping table (also called “out of accurate quantization range” in this disclosure) , e.g., the measured value xref (e.g., either the largest or smallest measured value) used as the reference value in the differential quantization satisfies either xref<u1 or xref> in Table 1. In this case, the de-quantization functions and may suffer large quantization error, and such large error can propagate to every differential quantization recovery.

[0051] The present disclosure provides an exemplary method for a wireless communication entity (for example, a user equipment, or UE) to transmit to another wireless entity (for example, a base station or BS) a measurement report, which contains one report value that independently represent both a measurement value and a reference value, and one or multiple differential values that represent the corresponding difference between a measurement value and the reference value. More particularly, the present disclosure aims at differential quantization in case the measured value that is desired to be used as reference value for differential quantization is out of accurate quantization range of the full-value quantization. The new method is capable of handling the case in which some measurement value (s) exceed the maximum value range of the reporting. The present techniques may be applied to 3GPP New Radio (NR) system, but is not limited thereto.

[0052] FIG. 3 illustrates that, in some embodiments, a first wireless node (e.g., a user equipment (UE) ) 10 and a second wireless node (e.g., a base station) 20 in a communication network system 30 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure are provided. The communication network system 30 includes the first wireless node 10 and the second wireless node 20. The first wireless node 10 may include a memory 12, a transceiver 13, and a processor 11 coupled to the memory 12 and the transceiver 13. The second wireless node 20 may include a memory 22, a transceiver 23, and a processor 21 coupled to the memory 22 and the transceiver 23. The processor 11 or 21 may be configured to implement proposed functions, procedures and / or methods described in this description. Layers of radio interface protocol may be implemented in the processor 11 or 21. The memory 12 or 22 is operatively coupled with the processor 11 or 21 and stores a variety of information to operate the processor 11 or 21. The transceiver 13 or 23 is operatively coupled with the processor 11 or 21, and the transceiver 13 or 23 transmits and / or receives a radio signal.

[0055] In some embodiments, the processor 11 of the first wireless node 10 is configured to obtain M measurement values corresponding to a same number of measurement resources, wherein M is an integer greater than one, generate a measurement report that includes one measurement value with full-value quantization mapping and M-1 measurement values with differential quantization mapping by using the one measurement value with the full-value quantization mapping as a reference value for the differential quantization mapping, and an index indication field that identifies the index of the one measurement value with the full-value quantization mapping, and transmit the measurement report to the second wireless node 20, wherein the one measurement value with the full-value quantization mapping is generated with an offset, and the measurement report contains an indication field to indicate the value of the offset. This enables handling the case in which some measurement value (s) exceed the maximum value range of the reporting, increases communication performance, and / or provides high reliability.

[0056] In some embodiments, the processor 21 of the second wireless node 20 is configured to receive, from a first wireless node, a measurement report associated with M measurement values corresponding to a same number of measurement resources, wherein M is an integer greater than one, and perform inverse quantization mapping for M reported values corresponding to the M measurement values of the measurement report, wherein the measurement report includes the reported values corresponding to one measurement value with full-value quantization mapping and M-1 measurement values with differential quantization mapping, the M-1 measurement values with differential quantization mapping are generated by using the one measurement value with the full-value quantization mapping as a reference value for the differential quantization mapping, and the measurement report further includes an index indication field that identifies the index of the one measurement value with the full-value quantization mapping, wherein the one measurement value with the full-value quantization mapping is applied with an offset, and the measurement report contains an indication field to indicate the value of the offset. This enables handling the case in which some measurement value (s) exceed the maximum value range of the reporting, increases communication performance, and / or provides high reliability.

[0057] FIG. 4 is a flowchart of a method for transmitting a measurement report 100 implemented by a first wireless node (e.g., a user equipment, UE) according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The first wireless node reports measurement information to a second wireless node (e.g., a base station, a network node, or a gNB) . Referring to FIG. 4, the method 100 includes the following steps.

[0058] At Step 102, the first wireless node obtains M measurement values corresponding to a same number of measurement resources, where M is an integer greater than one. In some embodiments, the measurement resources include configured resources for measuring one or more radio links, beams, channels, or reference signals. The obtained M measurement values may represent, for example, received power, signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio, channel quality, or other measurement metrics, without being limited thereto.

[0059] At Step 104, the first wireless node generates the measurement report. The measurement report includes: (i) one measurement value generated using a full-value quantization mapping, and (ii) M-1 measurement values generated using a differential quantization mapping. In particular, the one measurement value generated using the full-value quantization mapping is selected as a reference value for the differential quantization mapping applied to the remaining M-1 measurement values. Accordingly, each of the M-1 measurement values may be represented in the measurement report by a differential representation relative to the reference value. Further, the measurement report includes an index indication field that identifies an index of the one measurement value generated using the full-value quantization mapping, such that the second wireless node can determine which measurement value among the M measurement values is the reference value used for differential quantization.

[0060] In particular, the one measurement value generated using the full-value quantization mapping is generated with an offset. The offset may be applied to the one measurement value prior to, during, or as part of the full-value quantization mapping, such that the quantized representation reflects the offset-adjusted measurement value. Correspondingly, the measurement report further contains an indication field configured to indicate a value of the offset, thereby enabling the second wireless node to interpret, reconstruct, or otherwise process the full-value quantized measurement value.

[0061] More specifically, when a measurement value (mk) that is to be used as reference for differential quantization turns out to be out of accurate quantization range of full value quantization, the present disclosure applies an offset (woffset) to this measurement value to make (mk+woffset) or alternatively (mk-woffset) fall into the accurate quantization range. The present disclosure may use (mk+woffset) for description purpose. woffset = 0 is used in case mk itself is already within the accurate quantization range of full value quantization. For instance,

[0062] ·The wireless node sending the measurement report assigns the M reported measurement values based on M measured values by the following algorithm

[0063] where ri are the reported values in the measurement report, Qf is the full-value quantization mapping, Qd is the differential quantization mapping, mk is the one measurement value with the full-value quantization mapping, mi represents any of the M-1 measurement values other than the one measurement value, and woffset is the offset.

[0064] ·The wireless node receiving the measurement report recovers the M measurement values based on M reported values by the following algorithm

[0065] where m′iare the measurement values derived by the second wireless node,  is inverse full-value quantization mapping,  is inverse differential quantization mapping, rk is the reported value corresponding to the one measurement value with the full-value quantization mapping, m′k is the derived value corresponding to the one measurement value with the full-value quantization mapping, and woffset is the offset.

[0066] Because it changes from one measurement report to another measurement report whether the reference measurement value (mk) in a report falls within or out of the accurate quantization range, the applied offset woffset may be indicated to the wireless node receiving the measurement report. That is to say, this indication of woffset should be carried in the measurement report as well. The candidate values for woffset can be some integer multiples of accurate quantization range of the full-value quantization, i.e.,  for n∈ {-n1, -n1+1, …, -1, 0, 1, …, n2-1, n2} , where u1 and are given in the Table 1 and {n1, n2} are two integers that are either pre-defined for all wireless nodes or configured by radio resource control (RRC) signaling for the pair of wireless nodes communicating with the measurement report. Then, it is sufficient to use  bits for the indication field in the measurement report to indicate the applied offset woffset. It should be noted that, although woffset can be derived based on the full-value quantization range and {n1, n2} , it is not precluded in practice to directly pre-define or configure by RRC signaling the candidate values of woffset without following In this case, the number of indication bits indicating woffset is where Noffset is the number of candidate values of woffset.

[0067] Referring to FIG. 5, a measurement report format based on the above description is given, where the new indication field is named “Offset used in full-value quantization mapping” , which indicates a value of the offset woffset.

[0068] At Step 106, the first wireless node transmits the measurement report to the second wireless node. It is noted that the index indication field and the offset indication field may be carried in one or more information elements of the measurement report, and the measurement report may further include identifiers for the measurement resources associated with the M measurement values. In some embodiments, the selection of the measurement value to be full-value quantized may be based on a predetermined rule, or a configuration from the second wireless node, while the remaining measurement values are differentially quantized relative to the selected reference value.

[0069] In the embodiments of the present disclosure, by applying an explicit offset to the measurement value reported via full-value quantization mapping and signaling the offset value in the measurement report, the proposed scheme can properly represent measurement value (s) that would otherwise exceed the accurate quantization range. This method enables handling the case in which some measurement value (s) exceed the maximum value range of the reporting. In addition, overall communication performance is improved and high-reliability operation is facilitated, particularly in scenarios with small or large measurement values.

[0070] FIG. 6 is a flowchart of a method for receiving a measurement report 200 implemented by a second wireless node according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. Referring to FIG. 6, the method 200 includes the following steps. In Step 202, the second wireless node receives, from a first wireless node, a measurement report associated with M measurement values corresponding to a same number of measurement resources, wherein M is an integer greater than one. In Step 204, the second wireless node performs inverse quantization mapping for M reported values corresponding to the M measurement values of the measurement report. More specifically, the measurement report includes the reported values corresponding to one measurement value with full-value quantization mapping and M-1 measurement values with differential quantization mapping. The M-1 measurement values with differential quantization mapping are generated by using the one measurement value with the full-value quantization mapping as a reference value for the differential quantization mapping. The measurement report further includes an index indication field that identifies the index of the one measurement value with the full-value quantization mapping. In particular, the one measurement value with the full-value quantization mapping is applied with an offset, and the measurement report contains an indication field to indicate the value of the offset. This enables handling the case in which some measurement value (s) exceed the maximum value range of the reporting, increases communication performance, and / or provides high reliability. Other details of the method 200 may be referred to the method 100 described above and are not repeated herein.

[0071] Referring back to FIG. 3, in some embodiments, the processor 11 of the first wireless node 10 is configured to obtain M measurement values corresponding to a same number of measurement resources, wherein M is an integer greater than one, generate a measurement report that includes one measurement value with full-value quantization mapping and M-1 measurement values with differential quantization mapping by using the one measurement value with the full-value quantization mapping as a reference value for the differential quantization mapping, and an index indication field that identifies the index of the one measurement value with the full-value quantization mapping, and transmit the measurement report to a second wireless node, wherein the measurement report contains an indication bit field to indicate which one of a first differential quantization mapping and a second differential quantization mapping is used to obtain M-1 differential values corresponding to the M-1 measurement values. This enables handling the case in which some measurement value (s) exceed the maximum value range of the reporting, increases communication performance, and / or provides high reliability. This enables handling the case in which some measurement value (s) exceed the maximum value range of the reporting, increases communication performance, and / or provides high reliability.

[0072] Referring back to FIG. 3, in some embodiments, the processor 21 of the second wireless node 20 is configured to receive, from a first wireless node, a measurement report associated with M measurement values corresponding to a same number of measurement resources, wherein M is an integer greater than one, and perform inverse quantization mapping for M reported values corresponding to the M measurement values of the measurement report, wherein the measurement report includes the reported values corresponding to one measurement value with full-value quantization mapping and M-1 measurement values with differential quantization mapping, the M-1 measurement values with differential quantization mapping are generated by using the one measurement value with the full-value quantization mapping as a reference value for the differential quantization mapping, and the measurement report further includes an index indication field that identifies the index of the one measurement value with the full-value quantization mapping, wherein the measurement report contains an indication bit field to indicate which one of a first differential quantization mapping and a second differential quantization mapping is used to obtain M-1 differential values corresponding to the M-1 measurement values. This enables handling the case in which some measurement value (s) exceed the maximum value range of the reporting, increases communication performance, and / or provides high reliability. This enables handling the case in which some measurement value (s) exceed the maximum value range of the reporting, increases communication performance, and / or provides high reliability.

[0073] FIG. 7 is a flowchart of a method for transmitting a measurement report 300 implemented by a first wireless node (e.g., a user equipment, UE) according to another embodiment of the present disclosure. The first wireless node reports measurement information to a second wireless node (e.g., a base station, a network node, or a gNB) . Referring to FIG. 7, the method 300 includes the following steps.

[0074] At Step 302, the first wireless node obtains M measurement values corresponding to a same number of measurement resources, wherein M is an integer greater than one. In some embodiments, the measurement resources include configured resources for measuring one or more radio links, beams, channels, or reference signals. The obtained M measurement values may represent, for example, received power, signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio, channel quality, or other measurement metrics, without being limited thereto.

[0075] At Step 304, the first wireless node generates the measurement report.

[0076] In particular, the measurement report contains an indication bit field configured to indicate which one of a first differential quantization mapping and a second differential quantization mapping is used to obtain M-1 differential values corresponding to the M-1 measurement values. Accordingly, upon receiving the measurement report, the second wireless node can identify (i) the reference measurement value based on the index indication field and (ii) the specific differential quantization mapping scheme used for the M-1 differential values based on the indication bit field.

[0077] More specifically, when a measurement value that is to be used as reference for differential quantization turns out to be out of accurate quantization range of full value quantization, it is not used as the reference for differential quantization in this disclosure. Instead, a different measurement value that is within the accurate quantization range is selected as the reference for differential quantization and is reported in full-value format, and all the other measurement values including those out of accurate quantization range are all reported in differential reporting format. For example, the M measurement values upon the M measurement resources are denoted as {m1, m2, …, mM} . Without loss of generality, it is assumed that m1≤m2≤…≤mM-1≤mM, and {mk+1, mk+2, ……, mM} fall out of accurate quantization range of full-value quantization mapping function Qf (x) . Then the reference value for differential quantization is to be chosen from {m1, m2, …, mk} . Assume mk is chosen as the reference value.

[0078] Using one value from {m1, m2, …, mk} as reference value avoids the quantization error propagation problem in using mM as reference in case mM is out of accurate quantization range. However, it has open ranges at the both quantization ends in Table 2, given some of {mi} are smaller than this reference, and some others are larger than this reference. Because it may be beneficial to have open range at one single end of quantization mapping table than at two ends, it is beneficial to allow both of following two options for the differential reporting depending on the real-time measurement values:

[0079] ·In Option-1, the differential quantization mapping table has open range at one single end, as shown in Table 3 and Table 4. Option-1 is used when the smallest measurement value or the largest measurement value that is to be used as reference value for differential quantization does not fall out of accurate quantization range of full-value quantization, and therefore the reference value is indeed the smallest measurement value or the largest measurement value.

[0080] ·In Option-2, the differential quantization mapping table has open ranges at two ends, as shown in Table 2. Option-2 is used when the smallest measurement value or the largest measurement value that is to be used as reference value for differential quantization falls out of accurate quantization range of full-value quantization. In this case, a measurement value that does not fall out of accurate quantization range of full-value quantization is used as reference value for differential quantization.

[0081] Option-1 and Option-2 are able to switch between each other from one measurement report to another measurement report. Therefore, each measurement report may include one indication bit field to indicate which option is adopted for the measurement report. Meanwhile, two differential quantization mapping tables, one in format of Table 2 and another in format of Table 3 or Table 4, may be defined for all wireless nodes or configured by radio-resource-control (RRC) signaling for each pair of wireless nodes that perform communication based on the measurement report.

[0082] Referring to FIG. 8, a measurement report format based on above description is given in FIG. 8, where the new indication bit field is named “Out-of-range flag for differential value mapping” , which can indicate which one of the first differential quantization mapping and the second differential quantization mapping is used to obtain M-1 differential values corresponding to the M-1 measurement values. This indication bit field can either indicate whether it happens for the selected reference value becomes out of accurate quantization range or indicate which differential quantization mapping is applied. These two indication interpretations are equivalent and inter-changeable in this disclosure.

[0083] At Step 306, the first wireless node transmits the measurement report to the second wireless node. It is noted that the index indication field and the indication bit field may be carried in one or more information elements of the measurement report, and the measurement report may further include identifiers for the measurement resources associated with the M measurement values. In some embodiments, the selection of the measurement value to be full-value quantized may be based on a predetermined rule, or a configuration from the second wireless node, while the remaining measurement values are differentially quantized relative to the selected reference value.

[0084] In the embodiments of the present disclosure, by including an indication bit field to explicitly identify whether the first differential quantization mapping or the second differential quantization mapping is used, the second wireless node can select an appropriate reconstruction rule according to the dynamic range and distribution of the measured values. This facilitates robust handling of scenarios in which one or more measurement values would otherwise exceed the accurate quantization range. In addition, overall communication performance is improved and high-reliability operation is facilitated, particularly in scenarios with small or large measurement values.

[0085] FIG. 9 is a flowchart of a method for receiving a measurement report 400 implemented by a second wireless node according to another embodiment of the present disclosure. Referring to FIG. 9, the method 400 includes the following steps. In Step 402, the second wireless node receives, from a first wireless node, a measurement report associated with M measurement values corresponding to a same number of measurement resources, wherein M is an integer greater than one. In Step 404, the second wireless node performs inverse quantization mapping for M reported values corresponding to the M measurement values of the measurement report. In particular, the measurement report contains an indication bit field to indicate which one of a first differential quantization mapping and a second differential quantization mapping is used to obtain M-1 differential values corresponding to the M-1 measurement values. This enables handling the case in which some measurement value (s) exceed the maximum value range of the reporting, increases communication performance, and / or provides high reliability. Other details of the method 400 may be referred to the method 300 described above and are not repeated herein.
