Abstract

The dual beam suspension, developed from the conventional torsion beam suspension, comprises four main parts: two trailing arms and two unequal-length beams. The use of two unequal-length beams makes one trailing arm more independent from the other trailing arm compared to the conventional torsion beam suspension. As a result, noise vibration and harshness (NVH), including toe-angle, can be controlled more effectively.

Description

[0001] DUAL BEAM SUSPENSION

[0002] Field of the Invention

[0003] The present invention is related to mechanical engineering in the field of rear vehicle suspension, specifically to torsion beam suspension.

[0004] Background of the Invention

[0005] Torsion beam suspension is widely used in the rear suspension of budget cars. Its advantages are low maintenance cost, and its disadvantages are noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH), including toe-out angle when there is longitudinal and transverse force applied to the wheels. Due to these disadvantages, there are many patents that aim to fix them with the following unique method:

[0006] A US patent publication number US 2023 / 0286349 Al with the title of invention “TORSION BEAM SUSPENSION.” This invention has the main structure closest to the dual beam suspension. It aims to increase the strength of the two trailing arms by using different materials from the single beam.

[0007] A US patent publication number US 12,103,351 B2 with the title of invention “REAR SUSPENSION STRUCTURE.” This invention reduces the toe-out angle caused by longitudinal and transverse forces by using a single beam with two-wheel hub carriers fixed to each end and middle of the two trailing arms by bushing.

[0008] A US patent publication number US 2014 / 0203532 Al with the title of invention “STEERABLE TWIST-BEAM REAR SUSPENSION.” This invention aims to produce steering movement of the wheel hub carriers by using a steering axis arranged transversely fixed to the single beam and wheel hub carrier on each side.

[0009] A US patent publication number US 2023 / 0339282 Al with the title of invention “COUPLED TORSION BEAM AXLE TYPE REAR SUSPENSION SYSTEM.” This invention reduces the toe-out angle caused by longitudinal and transverse forces by using leaf springs arranged transversely fixed to each end of the two trailing arms.

[0010] A US patent publication number US 12,103,350 B2 with the title of invention “AXLE BEAM TYPE SUSPENSION.” This invention reduces the toe-out angle caused by longitudinal and transverse forces by using Watt's linkage arranged transversely fixed to each end of the two trailing arms.pattern (9) and a virtual pivot axis (a, b, c, d) at each end, and are fixed to the left and right transverse arms (5, 6) at each end by welding as shown in FIG. 2 or bolts as shown in FIG. 3. The front and rear beams (3, 4), including the left and right transverse arms (5, 6), are also formed from a single beam (17) or tube as shown in FIG. 6, with the middle portion cut symmetrically or nearly symmetrically at the top and / or bottom, resembling a hat with a brim, and fixed to the left and right conventional trailing arms (18, 19) at each end by welding in FIG. 1 or bolts.

[0011] According to FIG. 4, in case a transverse force (F) applies to the left wheel, the left trailing arm (1) and right trailing arm (2) will rotate counterclockwise at the virtual pivot axis (a, b, c, d) while the end of the left transverse arm (5) is lifted up and the end of the right transverse arm (6) is lowered, resulting in the front beam (3) having a length increase (14). Due to the fact that the front beam (3) is of constant length, the left trailing arm (1) and right trailing arm (2) cannot rotate.

[0012] According to FIG. 5, in case a longitudinal force (F) applies to the left wheel, the left trailing arm (1) will rotate clockwise due to the front beam (3) and rear beam (4) having different lengths at the virtual pivot axis (a, b, c, d), while the right trailing arm (2) is more independent from the left trailing arm (1) than the conventional torsion beam suspension in FIG. 6, resulting in the left trailing arm (1) having a toe-in angle (15). As a result, the two trailing arms (1, 2) can be arranged with a bushing pivot axis (11) higher than the wheel pivot axis (12), which reduces noise vibration and harshness (NVH).

[0013] Brief Description of the Drawings

[0014] FIG. 1 illustrates the main structure of dual beam suspension, where two unequal -length beams and two transverse arms are formed from a single beam or tube and fixed to two conventional trailing arms by welding.

[0015] FIG. 2 illustrates the main structure of dual beam suspension, where two unequal-length beams are fixed to two transverse arms by welding.

[0016] FIG. 3 illustrates the main structure of dual beam suspension, where two unequal-length beams are fixed to two transverse arms by bolts.

[0017] FIG. 4 illustrates the main structure of dual beam suspension and has transverse force.

[0018] FIG. 5 illustrates the main structure of dual beam suspension and has longitudinal force.FIG. 6 illustrates the main structure of conventional torsion beam suspension and has longitudinal force.

[0019] Best Mode of the Invention

[0020] As described in the Detailed Description of the Invention.

[0021] Industrial Applicability

[0022] The dual beam suspension is developed from the conventional torsion beam suspension and can therefore be used as a replacement in the automotive industry.
