Abstract

Systems and methods for Acknowledged Mode (AM) radio link control (RLC) poll handling for outdated packets are discussed herein. For example, a transmitting side of an AM RLC entity for a user equipment triggers a first poll. The AM RLC entity, in response to triggering of the first poll, submits, to a lower layer, an Acknowledged Mode Data Protocol Data Unit (AMD PDU) comprising a polling indication. Upon submitting the AMD PDU to the lower layer, the AM RLC entity sets a state variable to a highest sequence number (SN) of the AMD PDU among AMD PDUs that have been submitted to the lower layer. The AM RLC entity determines that the AMD PDU corresponding to the state variable is outdated and updates the state variable to an alternative SN. In some cases, it may be determined whether or not the first poll corresponds to a delay-based polling trigger.

Description

ACKNOWLEDGED MODE RADIO LINK CONTROL POLL HANDLING FOR OUTDATED PACKETSTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] This application relates generally to wireless communication systems, including wireless communication systems implementing an Acknowledged Mode (AM) radio link control (RLC) entity.BACKGROUND

[0002] Wireless mobile communication technology uses various standards and protocols to transmit data between a base station and a wireless communication device. Wireless communication system standards and protocols can include, for example, 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Long Term Evolution (LTE) (e.g., 4G) , 3GPP New Radio (NR) (e.g., 5G) , and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 standard for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) (commonly known to industry groups as  ) .

[0003] As contemplated by the 3GPP, different wireless communication systems's tandards and protocols can use various radio access networks (RANs) for communicating between a base station of the RAN (which may also sometimes be referred to generally as a RAN node, a network node, or simply a node) and a wireless communication device known as a user equipment (UE) . 3GPP RANs can include, for example, Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) , Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) RAN (GERAN) , Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) , Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN) , and / or Next-Generation Radio Access Network (NG-RAN) .

[0004] Each RAN may use one or more radio access technologies (RATs) to perform communication between the base station and the UE. For example, the GERAN implements GSM and / or EDGE RAT, the UTRAN implements Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) RAT or other 3GPP RAT, the E-UTRAN implements LTE RAT (sometimes simply referred to as LTE) , and NG-RAN implements NR RAT (sometimes referred to herein as 5G RAT, 5G NR RAT, or simply NR) . In certain deployments, the E-UTRAN may also implement NR RAT. In certain deployments, NG-RAN may also implement LTE RAT.

[0005] A base station used by a RAN may correspond to that RAN. One example of an E-UTRAN base station is an Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN) Node B (also commonly denoted as evolved Node B, enhanced Node B, eNodeB, or eNB) . One example of an NG-RAN base station is a next generation Node B (also sometimes referred to as a g Node B or gNB) .

[0006] A RAN provides its communication services with external entities through its connection to a core network (CN) . For example, E-UTRAN may utilize an Evolved Packet Core (EPC) while NG-RAN may utilize a 5G Core Network (5GC) .BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE SEVERAL VIEWS OF THE DRAWINGS

[0027] Various embodiments are described with regard to a UE. However, reference to a UE is merely provided for illustrative purposes. The example embodiments may be utilized with any electronic component that may establish a connection to a network and is configured with the hardware, software, and / or firmware to exchange information and data with the network. Therefore, the UE as described herein is used to represent any appropriate electronic component.

[0028] In some wireless communication systems, extended reality (XR) enhancements may include various user plane enhancements such as radio link control (RLC) re-transmission related enhancements for operation of Acknowledged Mode (AM) RLC entities with small packet delay budgets.

[0029] Additionally, certain systems enable timely RLC retransmission. For example, to achieve timely retransmissions on the RLC layer for XR traffic, autonomous retransmission (e.g., retransmission triggered without reception of status report) of protocol data units (PDUs) based on some triggers (e.g., existing or new triggers) may be used. Further, retransmission based on enhanced status reporting and retransmission based on enhanced polling may be used. However, it may be beneficial to further consider whether any specific enhancements are needed or if only proper configuration is needed. In some instances, the impact on capacity may be considered. Note that enhancements for uplink (UL) traffic may be focused on. It may be that existing mechanisms are insufficient to resolve timely RLC retransmission problem (s) and it may be beneficial to consider further RLC enhancements for timely RLC retransmission. In certain systems, this may exclude enhanced status reporting and focus on autonomous retransmission and polling enhancements (e.g., understand how possible enhancements / studies affect capacity and packet delay) .

[0030] Autonomous ReTx and Delay-based Polling

[0031] In some wireless communication systems, an RLC entity may use autonomous retransmission (ReTx) and / or delay based polling. In autonomous retransmission, the transmitter can autonomously trigger RLC retransmission of an RLC Service Data Unit (SDU) or segment, if the remaining time budget of the corresponding packet falls below a threshold, without the need to receive the status report. In delay-based polling, the transmitter can trigger a poll, if the remaining time budget of a packet falls below a threshold.

[0032] In certain wireless communication systems, both autonomous retransmission and delay-based poll triggering are supported. For example, a timely RLC retransmission implementation covers both autonomous retransmission and polling enhancement (s) . The network can configure either or both of them. Further, autonomous retransmission and / or polling may be triggered when the remaining time of an RLC SDU falls below a specified threshold. However, it may be beneficial to further study if the remaining time is determined based on a discardTimer at a packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) entity or a newly introduced timer at the RLC entity. Note that for autonomous retransmission, in certain systems, only a single autonomous retransmission may be triggered per RLC SDU.

[0033] Avoidance of unnecessary retransmission may be beneficial. In particular, if a PDCP SDU is discarded (e.g., becomes “outdated” or “old” or “obsolete” ) , the RLC layer may stop transmitting or retransmitting the RLC SDU (or segment) corresponding to this PDCP SDU. For example, when the transmit (TX) RLC entity receives a discard indication (e.g., discard message) of the SDU from the PDCP entity, the TX RLC entity considers the SDU as an outdated SDU. The TX RLC entity does not perform any transmission and retransmission of such outdated SDU / SDU segment. A new RLC timer at the TX RLC is not introduced to determine outdated RLC SDUs. The new RLC timer at the RX is per RLC entity The duration of the new RLC timer is not lower than that of t-reassembly. However, when some packets are discarded and become outdated, it may be unclear how the ongoing polling procedure related to such packets should be handled. As such, it may be beneficial to define how to handle the ongoing polling procedure when packets are discarded.

[0034] Some wireless communication systems use polling (see, e.g., section 5.3.3 of 3GPP technical specification (TS) 38.322) . An AM RLC entity may poll its peer AM RLC entity in order to trigger STATUS reporting at the peer AM RLC entity. For transmission of an AMD PDU, upon notification of a transmission opportunity by a lower layer, for each AMD PDU submitted for transmission such that the AMD PDU includes either a not previously transmitted RLC SDU or an RLC SDU segment including not previously transmitted byte segment, the transmitting side of an AM RLC entity may increment PDU_WITHOUT_POLL by one, and increment BYTE_WITHOUT_POLL by every new byte of a data field element that it maps to the data field of the AMD PDU. If PDU_WITHOUT_POLL ≥ pollPDU or if BYTE_WITHOUT_POLL ≥ pollByte, a poll in the AMD PDU may be included. Upon notification of a transmission opportunity by the lower layer, for each AMD PDU submitted for transmission, the transmitting side of an AM RLC entity may, if both the transmission buffer and the retransmission buffer becomes empty (excluding transmitted RLC SDUs or RLC SDU segments awaiting acknowledgements) after the transmission of the AMD PDU, or if no new RLC SDU can be transmitted after the transmission of the AMD PDU (e.g. due to window stalling) , include a poll in the AMD PDU. Note that an empty RLC buffer (excluding transmitted RLC SDUs or RLC SDU segments awaiting acknowledgements) may not lead to unnecessary polling when data awaits in the upper layer. Details may be left up to UE implementation. To include a poll in an AMD PDU, the transmitting side of an AM RLC entity may set the P field of the AMD PDU to 1, set PDU_WITHOUT_POLL to 0, and / or set BYTE_WITHOUT_POLL to 0.

[0035] In certain wireless communication systems, a poll is triggered and included in an AMD PDU when the number of PDUs or bytes of not previously transmitted packets reaches a threshold, when both transmission and retransmission buffer become empty, or when the window is stalled. The introduction of delay-based polling may be understood as adding / introducing a poll triggering event.

[0036] FIG. 1 illustrates an example AMD PDU 100. The illustrated AMD PDU 100 includes, in a first octet (OCT 1) , a D / C field 102 (data / control field) , a P-field 104 (polling bit field) , an SI field 106 (segmentation information field) , and a first SN field 108 (sequence number field) . The AMD PDU 100 includes, in a second octet (OCT 2) , a second SN field 110. The AMD PDU 100 includes in a third octet (OCT 3) through an Nth octet (OCT N) data fields 112. The P-field 104 of the AMD PDU 100 is set to 1 if the poll is included.

[0037] In some wireless communication systems, both a state variable POLL_SN and a poll ReTX timer have been employed to control the polling procedure. Upon submission of an AMD PDU including a poll to lower layer, the transmitting side of an AM RLC entity may set the state variable POLL_SN to the highest sequence number (SN) of the AMD PDU among the AMD PDUs submitted to lower layer. Further, the AM RLC entity may start or restart a poll retransmit timer (e.g., t-PollRetransmit) . Upon reception of a STATUS report from the receiving RLC AM entity, the transmitter may stop and reset the Stop and Reset poll retransmit timer, if the STATUS report comprises a positive or negative acknowledgement for the RLC SDU with sequence number equal to POLL_SN. The transmitter may send the poll again when t-PollRetransmit expires, if some conditions are satisfied. For example, upon expiry of t-PollRetransmit, the transmitting side of an AM RLC entity may, if both the transmission buffer and the retransmission buffer are empty (excluding transmitted RLC SDU or RLC SDU segment awaiting acknowledgements) , or if no new RLC SDU or RLC SDU segment can be transmitted (e.g., due to window stalling) , the RLC SDU with the highest SN among the RLC SDUs may be considered submitted to the lower layer for retransmission or any RLC SDU may be considered which has not been positively acknowledged for retransmission. Note that a poll in an AMD PDU may be included.

[0038] Embodiments herein introduce procedures for handling an ongoing polling procedure, when the packets related to this polling procedure becomes outdated. Note that wireless systems do not support procedures for handling ongoing polling procedures when a packet becomes outdated. In particular, if the packet corresponding to POLL_SN is discarded (e.g., due to being outdated) , embodiments herein introduce a procedure for the transmitter to react to the discarded packet. Additionally, embodiments herein introduce a procedure for dealing with POLL_SN settings in different poll triggering events and handling an autonomous retransmission procedure that has been triggered when the corresponding packets becomes outdated. Further, embodiments herein introduce a procedure to avoid excessive autonomous retransmission of a packet due to both remaining time status and expiry of poll retransmit timer. Embodiments herein also introduce procedures for stopping and resetting a poll retransmit timer when a packet is discarded (e.g., outdated) .

[0039] While various embodiments herein refer to outdated packets and procedures for handling outdated packets, it should be understood that “outdated" packets may be interchangeably referred to as “obsolete” packets and / or “discarded” packets.

[0040] Poll_SN Handling upon Discarding

[0041] FIG. 2 illustrates an example of poll handling and packet discarding, according to embodiments herein. Embodiments herein may refer to poll handling using state variables (e.g., POLL_SN 204) . It may be assumed that a poll is triggered 206 (e.g., based on either the legacy triggering event or triggering events according to embodiments herein such as packet delay) , and the state variable POLL_SN 204 is set to the highest SN of the AMD PDU among the AMD PDUs submitted 208 to the lower layer. Various other AMD PDUs are not submitted 210 to lower layers. After a certain period of time 202, the packet with SN corresponding to the state variable POLL_SN 204 is discarded 212 and becomes outdated.

[0042] As a result of a packet corresponding to POLL_SN becoming outdated, according to certain embodiments, retransmission of the discarded packet is not performed. As such, the transmitter (i.e., the transmitting side of an AM RLC entity) may not need to continue to rely on the current POLL_SN to determine when the running poll retransmit timer can be stopped. Embodiments herein introduce a procedure for when the transmitter may not continue to rely on the current POLL_SN to determine when the running poll retransmit timer can be stopped.

[0043] In various embodiments, the transmitter triggers a poll when the packet corresponding to POLL_SN is discarded. Then, the transmitter follows a polling procedure to reset the value of POLL_SN (e.g., set to the highest SN of the AMD PDU among the AMD PDUs submitted to lower layer at this time, the packets of which have not been discarded yet) . In other words, embodiments herein define a poll triggering event in which the poll is triggered when the packet corresponding to the current POLL_SN is discarded. In one embodiment, instead of triggering the poll directly, the transmitter may stop the poll retransmit timer first, and then may determine if a new poll should be triggered based on whether at least one poll triggering condition is fulfilled.

[0044] FIG. 3 is flow diagram illustrating an example procedure 300 for POLL_SN handling upon discarding a packet, according to embodiments herein. As illustrated, the example procedure 300 for POLL_SN handling upon discarding a packet starts with the transmitter determining 302 that at least one packet has become outdated (e.g., discarded by the upper layer) . Then, the transmitter queries 304 whether the packet corresponding to POLL_SN is discarded or not. If the packet is discarded (e.g., yes) , the transmitter triggers 306 another poll to update POLL_SN. If the packet is not discarded (e.g., no) , the procedure 300 repeats with the transmitter again determining 302 that at least one packet has become outdated.

[0045] In other embodiments, the transmitter directly updates the value of POLL_SN when the packet corresponding to POLL_SN is discarded. In such embodiments, the transmitter does not go through the polling procedure, but only the value of POLL_SN is changed. For example, the poll retransmit timer may continue to run without restarting.

[0046] It should be understood that, for either embodiments wherein the transmitter triggers a poll or wherein the transmitter directly updates the value of POLL_SN when the packet corresponding to POLL_SN is discarded, the SN of any already outdated packets may be excluded when setting the value of POLL_SN.

[0047] Handling of POLL_SN with Delay-based Polling

[0048] Certain embodiments provide a procedure to determine how POLL_SN should be set, based on the type of poll triggering event. Initially, it may be assumed that a poll is triggered when the remaining time of a RLC SDU becomes smaller than a threshold. In some embodiments, if the poll is triggered as the remaining time of at least one RLC SDU becomes smaller than a threshold (e.g., delay-based polling) , the transmitter (i.e., the transmitting side of an AM RLC entity) sets the value of a state variable to the highest SN among the RLC SDUs with a remaining time smaller than a threshold. The transmitter may start / restart a poll retransmit timer (e.g., may be a new timer or a legacy timer) . In some cases, the state variable may be POLL_SN. In some other cases, the state variable may be a newly introduced variable different from POLL_SN (e.g., may be denoted as POLL_SN_DELAY) .

[0049] In various embodiments, the state variable value is set based on the highest SN among all RLC SDUs with remaining time smaller than a threshold, including both packets submitted and not yet submitted to the lower layer. In other embodiments, the state variable value is set based on the highest SN among the RLC SDUs with remaining time smaller than a threshold, and the AMD PDUs of which have been submitted to the lower layer. When the transmitter receives a status report comprising a positive or negative acknowledgement for the RLC SDU with sequence number equal to the state variable (e.g., POLL_SN or POLL_SN_DELAY) , the transmitter may stop and reset the poll retransmit timer. It should be understood that the SN of any already outdated packets may be excluded when setting the state variable value.

[0050] FIG. 4 is a flow diagram illustrating an example procedure 400 for handling of POLL_SN with delay-based polling, according to embodiments herein. The illustrated example procedure 400 starts with a poll being triggered 402. Then, the transmitter queries 404 whether the poll was triggered based on legacy triggering events or new triggering events such as a packet delay. If the poll was triggered based on legacy triggering events, the POLL_SN is set 406 based on the highest SN among AMD PDUs submitted to the lower layer. If the poll was triggered based on a delay based triggering event, the POLL_SN is set 408 based on the highest SN among AMD PDUs submitted to the lower layer, whose remaining time is smaller than a threshold (e.g., does not meet a threshold) .

[0051] In various embodiments, if the packet corresponding to the state variable (e.g., POLL_SN or POLL_SN_DELAY) is discarded by the higher layer and is considered outdated, the transmitter may trigger another poll, assuming this is triggered based on the legacy triggering event to update the state variable. In other embodiments, the transmitter may trigger another poll, assuming this is triggered based on the new triggering event related to packet delay to update state variable. In yet other embodiments, the transmitter may update the state variable directly without triggering a new poll, based on the highest SN of the AMD PDU among the AMD PDUs submitted to lower layer. In yet other embodiments, the transmitter may update the state variable directly without triggering a new poll, based on the highest SN among all RLC SDUs with remaining time smaller than a threshold. In other embodiments, the transmitter may update the state variable directly without triggering a new poll, based on the highest SN among the RLC SDUs with remaining time smaller than a threshold, and the AMD PDUs of which have been submitted to the lower layer. Note that such embodiments performed by the transmitter may be performed independently of each other or in combination with each other. Additionally note that the SN of any already outdated packets may be excluded when setting the state variable value.

[0052] Differentiated Handling of Poll Retransmit Timer

[0053] In various embodiments, whether to start the poll retransmit timer after the poll is transmitted depends on a poll triggering event. For example, the transmitter (i.e., the transmitting side of an AM RLC entity) may start the poll retransmit timer when the poll is included in an AMD PDU. If the poll was triggered by a legacy triggering event, the transmitter starts / restarts the poll retransmit timer. In some examples, the transmitter may start the poll retransmit timer when the poll is included in an AMD PDU. If the poll was triggered by a triggering event related to packet delay status (e.g., the remaining time of a RLC SDU becomes smaller than a threshold) , the transmitter does not start or restart the poll retransmit timer.

[0054] In other embodiments, the poll bit may be set differently in the AMD PDU, based on whether the poll was triggered by a legacy triggering event, or a triggering event related to packet delay status. This may be understood as an indicator in the AMD PDU that explicitly or implicitly indicates the poll triggering event.

[0055] Autonomous ReTX with Considerations of Discarding

[0056] In various embodiments for autonomous ReTX with considerations of discarding a packet after autonomous retransmission of an RLC SDU is triggered, if the corresponding packet becomes outdated (e.g., discarded by PDCP) , the transmitter (i.e., the transmitting side of an AM RLC entity) may cancel the triggered autonomous retransmission. In other embodiments, after a RLC SDU is considered outdated, the transmitter may no longer consider it for autonomous retransmission, even if conditions for its autonomous transmission are fulfilled.

[0057] RLC SDU Selection for Retransmission

[0058] In various embodiments for RLC SDU selection for retransmission, upon expiration of the poll retransmit timer, the transmitter (i.e., the transmitting side of an AM RLC entity) may select an RLC SDU and consider it for retransmission. The transmitter select or prioritize a RLC SDU that has not triggered any autonomous retransmission previously.

[0059] In certain such embodiments, upon expiry of t-PollRetransmit (see, e.g., 3GPP TS 38.322 section 5.3.3.4) , the transmitting side of an AM RLC entity, if both the transmission buffer and the retransmission buffer are empty (excluding transmitted RLC SDU or RLC SDU segment awaiting acknowledgements) , or if no new RLC SDU or RLC SDU segment can be transmitted (e.g., due to window stalling) : consider the RLC SDU with the highest SN among the RLC SDUs submitted to lower layer for retransmission and has not been retransmitted autonomously; or consider any RLC SDU which has not been positively acknowledged for retransmission and has not been retransmitted autonomously. Further, the AM RLC entity includes a poll in an AMD PDU (e.g., as described in clause 5.3.3.2 of 3GPP 38.322) .

[0060] In certain embodiments, the transmitter may refrain from triggering autonomous retransmission for a RLC SDU even when its remaining time becomes smaller than a threshold, if it has already been considered for retransmission previously by the transmitter upon expiration of the poll retransmit timer.

[0061] Poll Retransmit Timer Stopping based on Discarding

[0062] In certain embodiments, state variables may include a “TX_Next_Ack” and / or a “POLL_SN. ” TX_Next_Ack may be understood as an acknowledgement state variable and may be used for various polling procedures. The TX_Next_Ack state variable holds the value of the SN of the next RLC SDU for which a positive acknowledgment is to be received in-sequence, and it serves as the lower edge of the transmitting window. TX_Next_Ack may initially be set to 0, and may be updated whenever the AM RLC entity receives a positive acknowledgment for an RLC SDU with SN = TX_Next_Ack.

[0063] POLL_SN may be understood as a poll send state variable. The POLL_SN state variable holds the value of the highest SN of the AMD PDU among the AMD PDUs submitted to lower layer when POLL_SN is set according to, for example, 3GPP TS 38.322 clause 5.3.3.2. POLL_SN may initially be set to 0.

[0064] It may be assumed that the value of TX_Next_Ack is set, for example, when a status report is received. When a poll is triggered, the poll retransmit timer is started / restarted and POLL_SN is set accordingly. While the poll retransmit timer is running, a discard indication is received from the higher layer. With XR applications, for example, a group of packets may be discarded jointly and concurrently (e.g., based on PDU Set discarding) . If all packets with SN between (and including) TX_Next_Ack and POLL_SN are either already positively / negatively acknowledged or considered outdated (due to discarding) , there may be no need for the transmitter (i.e., the transmitting side of an AM RLC entity) to continue with the poll for these packets. Further, continuing the poll may force the receiver to send unnecessary status reporting, which may be seen as a waste of radio resources. According to embodiments herein, it may be beneficial for the transmitter to wait for the status report that the receiver triggers, once the receiver has detected discarding by itself, instead of continuing to ask for unnecessary (and possibly pre-mature) status reports.

[0065] FIG. 5 illustrates an example of a poll retransmit timer stopping based on packet discarding, according to embodiments herein. In the illustrated example, a POLL_SN 504 may include various packets submitted 508 to lower layers and not submitted 510 to lower layers. Some packets with SN smaller than the state variable TX_Next_Ack 506 may already be positively acknowledged 514. After a certain period of time 502, packet discarding 516 may be performed on packets submitted 508 to lower layers (e.g., a discard indication is received from an upper layer to indicate the discarding) . Once the discard indication is received, various packets may be understood as being discarded 512. However, in such examples, an issue may arise as the transmitter may not be able to determine whether the poll retransmit timer is to keep running in order to trigger status reporting from the receiver.

[0066] In various embodiments, if all packets with SN between (and including) TX_Next_Ack and POLL_SN are either positively / negatively acknowledged or considered outdated (e.g., due to discarding) , the transmitter may stop and reset the running poll retransmit timer (e.g., if the Poll Retransmit Timer is running) . In some instances, the transmitter may check this condition for poll retransmit timer stopping / resetting, when receiving discard indications from the upper layers. In some other instances, the transmitter may check this condition for poll retransmit timer stopping / resetting, when receiving a status report from the receiver.

[0067] For example, FIG. 6 is a flow diagram illustrating an example procedure 600 for poll retransmit timer stopping based on packet discarding, according to embodiments herein. The example procedure 600 begins with the transmitter setting 602 a value for TX_Next_Ack. The transmitter sets 604 a value for POLL_SN and starts a poll retransmit timer. Then, the transmitter detects 606 that at least one packet has become outdated (e.g., discard by the upper layer) . The transmitter queries 608 whether all the packets with an SN value between (and including) TX_Next_Ack and POLL_SN are either positively / negatively acknowledged or considered outdated. If the transmitter determines that all the packets are positively / negatively acknowledged or considered outdated, the transmitter stops 610 and resets the poll retransmit timer. If the transmitter determines that not all the packets are positively / negatively acknowledged or considered outdated, the transmitter may perform detection again (e.g., detect 606 that at least one packet has become outdated) . Note that setting 602 a value for TX_Next_Ack and setting 604 a value for POLL_SN (and starting a poll retransmit timer) may be performed in any order (e.g., interchangeably with each other) .

[0068] Example Embodiments

[0069] The following example embodiments may incorporate one or more embodiments described herein above, either alone or in any combination.

[0070] FIG. 7 is a flowchart illustrating a method 700 for a transmitting side of an AM RLC entity for user equipment, according to embodiments herein. The illustrated method 700 includes triggering 702 a first poll. The method 700 further includes in response to triggering of the first poll, submitting 704, to a lower layer, an AMD PDU comprising a polling indication. The method 700 further includes, upon submitting the AMD PDU to the lower layer, setting 706 a state variable to a highest SN of the AMD PDU among AMD PDUs that have been submitted to the lower layer. The method 700 further includes determining 708 that the AMD PDU corresponding to the state variable is outdated. The method 700 further includes updating 710 the state variable to an alternative SN.

[0071] In some embodiments of the method 700, updating the state variable to the alternative SN comprises: updating the state variable to a current highest SN among the AMD PDUs that are not outdated; or updating the state variable to the current highest SN among the AMD PDUs that are not outdated and have been submitted to the lower layer; or updating the state variable to the current highest SN that is smaller than the state variable among the AMD PDUs that are not outdated and have been submitted to the lower layer; or updating the state variable to the current highest SN among the AMD PDUs that are not outdated and have a remaining time budget smaller than a threshold.

[0072] In some embodiments, the method 700 further comprises, in response to determining that the AMD PDU corresponding to the state variable is outdated, triggering a second poll to update the state variable to the alternative SN.

[0073] In some embodiments, the method 700 further comprises, in response to determining that the AMD PDU corresponding to the state variable is outdated: stopping a poll retransmit timer; in response to determining that at least one poll triggering condition is fulfilled, triggering a second poll; and in response to triggering of the second poll, updating the state variable to the alternative SN.

[0074] In some embodiments, the method 700 further comprises, in response to determining that the AMD PDU corresponding to the state variable is outdated, without restarting a poll retransmit timer, updating the state variable to the alternative SN.

[0075] In some embodiments of the method 700, determining that the AMD PDU corresponding to the state variable is outdated comprises receiving an indication from an upper layer that the AMD PDU corresponding to the state variable is discarded.

[0076] In some embodiments, the method 700 further comprises: determining whether or not the first poll corresponds to a delay-based polling trigger; when the first poll corresponds to the delay-based polling trigger, updating the state variable to a current highest SN among a first subset of the AMD PDUs that have a remaining time budget less than a threshold; and when the first poll does not correspond to the delay-based polling trigger, updating the state variable to the current highest SN among a second subset of the AMD PDUs that have been submitted to the lower layer. Some such embodiments further comprise, when the first poll corresponds to the delay-based polling trigger, updating the state variable to the current highest SN among the first subset of the AMD PDUs that have been submitted to the lower layer. Some other such embodiments further comprise, in response to receiving, at the transmitting side of the AM RLC entity, a status report comprising a positive or negative acknowledgement for one of an RLC SDU and an RLC segment with a sequence number equal to the state variable, stopping and resetting a poll retransmit timer. Yet some other such embodiments further comprise, in response to determining that the AMD PDU corresponding to the state variable is outdated, triggering a second poll to update the state variable, wherein the second poll is not considered to correspond to the delay-based polling trigger. Yet some other such embodiments further comprise, in response to determining that the AMD PDU corresponding to the state variable is outdated, triggering a second poll to update the state variable, wherein the second poll is considered to correspond to the delay-based polling trigger. Yet some other such embodiments further comprise, when the first poll does not correspond to the delay-based polling trigger, without triggering a second poll, updating the state variable to the current highest SN among the second subset of the AMD PDUs that have been submitted to the lower layer. Yet some other such embodiments further comprise, when the first poll corresponds to the delay-based polling trigger, without triggering a second poll, updating the state variable to the current highest SN among the first subset of the AMD PDUs that have a remaining time budget less than a threshold. Yet some other such embodiments further comprise, when the first poll corresponds to the delay-based polling trigger, without triggering a second poll, updating the state variable to the current highest SN among the first subset of the AMD PDUs that have a remaining time budget less than a threshold and have been submitted to the lower layer.

[0077] In some embodiments, the method 700 further comprises: determining whether or not the first poll corresponds to a delay-based polling trigger; when the first poll does not correspond to the delay-based polling trigger, starting or restarting a poll retransmit timer upon submitting the AMD PDU to the lower layer; when the first poll corresponds to the delay-based polling trigger, not starting or restarting the poll retransmit timer upon submitting the AMD PDU to the lower layer.

[0078] In some embodiments, the method 700 further comprises explicitly or implicitly indicating in the AMD PDU whether or not the first poll corresponds to a delay-based polling trigger.

[0079] In some embodiments, the method 700 further comprises, after autonomous retransmission of an RLC SDU or RLC segment is triggered, canceling the autonomous retransmission in response to a corresponding packet of the RLC SDU or RLC segment becoming outdated.

[0080] In some embodiments, the method 700 further comprises, after determining that an RLC SDU or RLC segment is outdated, not performing autonomous retransmission of the RLC SDU or RLC segment regardless of whether or not one or more condition for the autonomous retransmission of the RLC SDU or RLC segment are fulfilled.

[0081] In some embodiments, the method 700 further comprises, upon expiration of a poll retransmit timer, selecting or prioritizing, for retransmission consideration, an RLC SDU or RLC segment that has not previously triggered an autonomous retransmission.

[0082] In some embodiments, the method 700 further comprises, upon expiration of a poll retransmit timer, not triggering autonomous retransmission for an RLC SDU or RLC segment that the transmitting side of the AM RLC entity has already considered for retransmission upon expiration of a poll retransmit timer.

[0093] FIG. 15A and FIG. 15B illustrate examples of protocol stacks in a 3GPP based wireless communication system. Functions of a layer of a protocol stack may be performed by a corresponding entity. Thus, as used herein, a layer of a protocol stack may also be referred to as an entity (or simply by the name of the layer) . For example, a physical (PHY) layer may be referred to as a PHY entity (or simply as a PHY) , a media access control (MAC) layer may be referred to as a MAC entity (or simply as a MAC) , a radio link control (RLC) layer may be referred to as an RLC entity (or simply as an RLC) , a packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) layer may be referred to as a PDCP entity (or simply as a PDCP) , a service data adaptation protocol (SDAP) layer may be referred to as an SDAP entity (or simply an SDAP) , and a radio resource control (RRC) layer may be referred to as an RRC entity (or simply as an RRC) .

[0094] FIG. 15A illustrates an example of a user plane protocol stack 1500a for communication between a UE 1502 and a base station 1504 according to one embodiment. The user plane refers to a path through which data generated in an application layer (e.g., voice data, video data, or internet packet data) are transported. The user plane protocol stack 1500a may be divided into a Layer 1 (L1) protocol and a Layer 2 (L2) protocol. In NR systems, the L1 protocol includes the PHY and the L2 protocol includes the MAC, RLC, PDCP, and SDAP.

[0095] The PHY may transmit or receive information used by the MAC over one or more air interfaces (i.e., physical channels and signals) . The PHY offers to the MAC transport channels, the MAC offers to the RLC logical channels, the RLC offers to the PDCP RLC channels, the PDCP offers to the SDAP radio bearers, and the SDAP offers to 5GC QoS flows.

[0096] In NR systems, example services and functions of SDAP include mapping between a QoS flow and a data radio bearer and marking QoS flow ID (QFI) in both DL and UL packets. A single SDAP entity may be configured for each individual protocol data unit (PDU) session.

[0097] In NR systems, example services and functions of the PDCP for the user plane include sequence numbering, header compression and decompression, transfer of user data, reordering and duplicate detection, in-order delivery, PDCP PDU routing (in case of split bearers) , retransmission of PDCP service data units (SDUs) , ciphering / deciphering and integrity protection, PDCP SDU discard, PDCP re-establishment and data recovery for RLC AM, PDCP status reporting for RLC acknowledgement mode (AM) , duplication of PDCP PDUs, and duplicate discard indication to lower layers.

[0098] In NR systems, the RLC supports three transmission modes: transparent mode (TM) ; unacknowledged mode (UM) ; and Acknowledged Mode (AM) . The RLC configuration is per logical channel with no dependency on numerologies and / or transmission durations. Example services and functions of the RLC depend on the transmission mode and include transfer of upper layer PDUs, sequence numbering independent of the one in PDCP (UM and AM) , error correction through automatic repeat request (ARQ) (AM only) , segmentation (AM and UM) and re-segmentation (AM only) of RLC SDUs, reassembly of SDUs (AM and UM) , duplicate detection (AM only) , RLC SDU discard (AM and UM) , RLC re-establishment, and protocol error detection (AM only) .

[0099] In NR systems, example services and functions of the MAC include mapping between logical channels and transport channels, multiplexing / demultiplexing of MAC SDUs belonging to one or different logical channels into / from transport blocks (TBs) delivered to / from the physical layer on transport channels, scheduling information reporting, error correction through hybrid ARQ (HARQ) (one HARQ entity per cell in case of carrier aggregation (CA) ) , priority handling between UEs by dynamic scheduling, priority handling between logical channels of one UE by logical channel prioritization, and padding. A single MAC entity may support multiple numerologies, transmission timings, and cells. Mapping restrictions in logical channel prioritization control which of the numerology (ies) , cell (s) , and transmission timing (s) a logical channel can use. To accommodate different kinds of data transfer services offered by the MAC, multiple types of logical channels are defined. Each logical channel type is defined by what type of information is transferred. The MAC PDU arrives to the PHY layer in the form of a transport block.

[0100] FIG. 15B illustrates an example of a control plane protocol stack 1500b for communication between the UE 1502, the base station 1504, and a core network 1506 (i.e., a mobility management entity (MME) in LTE or an access and mobility management function (AMF) in NR) . The control plane refers to a path through which control messages used to manage calls by a UE and a network are transported.

[0101] The control plane protocol stack 1500b includes PHY, MAC, RLC, PDCP, and RRC layers in an access stratum (AS) . The control plane protocol stack 1500b also includes a non-access stratum (NAS) comprising a set of protocols to convey non-radio signaling between the UE 1502 and the core network 1506. The NAS performs functions such as authentication, mobility management, and security control.

[0102] As discussed above, the PHY may transmit or receive information used by the MAC over one or more air interfaces. The PHY layer may further perform link adaptation or adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) , power control, cell search (e.g., for initial synchronization and handover purposes) , and other measurements used by higher layers, such as the RRC. The PHY may further perform error detection on the transport channels, forward error correction (FEC) coding / decoding of the transport channels, modulation / demodulation of physical channels, interleaving, rate matching, mapping onto physical channels, and Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) antenna processing.

[0103] In NR systems, example services and functions of the RRC include broadcast of system information related to AS and NAS, paging initiated by 5GC or a RAN, establishment and maintenance or release of an RRC connection between the UE and the RAN, security functions including key management, establishment / configuration / maintenance / release of signaling radio bearers (SRBs) and data radio bearers (DRBs) , mobility functions (including handover and context transfer, UE cell selection and reselection, and inter-RAT mobility, QoS management functions, UE measurement reporting and control of the reporting, detection of and recovery from radio link failure, and NAS message transfer.

[0104] The example services and functions of the PDCP for the control plane include sequence numbering, ciphering / deciphering and integrity protection, transfer of control plane data, reordering and duplicate detection, in-order delivery, duplication of PDCP PDUs, and duplicate discard indication to lower layers.

[0105] Functions of an RLC layer are performed by RLC entities. For an RLC entity configured at a base station, there is a peer RLC entity configured at the UE and vice versa. In NR sidelink communication, in NR sidelink discovery, or for an RLC entity configured at the transmitting UE, there is a peer RLC entity configured at each receiving UE.

[0106] An RLC entity receives / delivers RLC service data units (SDUs) from / to upper layer and sends / receives RLC protocol data units (PDUs) to / from its peer RLC entity via lower layers. An RLC PDU can either be an RLC data PDU or an RLC control PDU. If an RLC entity receives RLC SDUs from an upper layer, it may receive them through a single RLC channel between RLC and upper layer, and after forming RLC data PDUs from the received RLC SDUs, the RLC entity may submit the RLC data PDUs to a lower layer through a single logical channel. If an RLC entity receives RLC data PDUs from a lower layer, it may receive them through a single logical channel, and after forming RLC SDUs from the received RLC data PDUs, the RLC entity may deliver the RLC SDUs to an upper layer through a single RLC channel between RLC and upper layer. If an RLC entity submits / receives RLC control PDUs to / from lower layer, it may submit / receive them through the same logical channel it submits / receives the RLC data PDUs through.

[0107] An RLC entity can be configured to perform data transfer in Transparent Mode (TM) , Unacknowledged Mode (UM) , or Acknowledged Mode (AM) . Consequently, an RLC entity may be categorized as a TM RLC entity, an UM RLC entity or an AM RLC entity depending on the mode of data transfer that the RLC entity is configured to provide.

[0108] FIG. 16 illustrates an example AM RLC entity 1600. The AM RLC entity 1600 includes a transmitting side 1602 and a receiving side 1604, which are configured under RLC control 1606 as described herein. The transmitting side 1602 of the AM RLC entity 1600 receives RLC SDUs from an upper layer (e.g., a PDCP layer) through an AM-RLC channel 1608 and sends RLC PDUs through a logical channel 1610 (e.g., a downlink (DL)  / uplink (UL) dedicated control channel (DCCH) , a DL / UL dedicated traffic channel (DTCH) , a shared control channel (SCCH) , or a shared traffic channel (STCH) ) to its peer AM RLC entity via lower layers (e.g., MAC and PHY layers) . The receiving side 1604 of the AM RLC entity 1600 delivers RLC SDUs to the upper layer through the AM-RLC channel 1608 and receives RLC PDUs from its peer AM RLC entity via the logical channel 1610 from the lower layers.

[0109] The AM RLC entity 1600 may be configured to deliver / receive an RLC data PDU referred to as an AMD PDU that includes either one complete RLC SDU or one RLC SDU segment. The AM RLC entity 1600 may also be configured to deliver / receive an RLC control PDU referred to as a STATUS PDU.

[0110] The transmitting side 1602 of the AM RLC entity 1600 generates an AMD PDU for an RLC SDU received from the AM-RLC channel 1608. The transmitting side 1602 of the AM RLC entity 1600 is configured to generate 1612 an RLC header for the RLC SDU and store the header in the transmission buffer. When notified of a transmission opportunity by the lower layer, the transmitting side 1602 of the AM RLC entity 1600 performs segmentation 1614 of the RLC SDUs, if needed, so that the corresponding AMD PDUs, with modified RLC headers as needed, fit within the total size of RLC PDU (s) indicated by lower layer. The transmitting side 1602 of the AM RLC entity 1600 adds 1616 the RLC header to form the RLC PDU that is outputs through the logical channel 1610.

[0111] The transmitting side 1602 of the AM RLC entity 1600 supports retransmission of RLC SDUs or RLC SDU segments in a retransmission buffer 1618. If the RLC SDU or RLC SDU segment to be retransmitted (including the RLC header) does not fit within the total size of RLC PDU (s) indicated by the lower layer at the particular transmission opportunity notified by the lower layer, the transmitting side 1602 AM RLC entity 1600 can segment the RLC SDU or re-segment the RLC SDU segments into RLC SDU segments. When the transmitting side 1602 of the AM RLC entity 1600 forms AMD PDUs from RLC SDUs or RLC SDU segments, it includes relevant RLC headers in the AMD PDU.

[0112] The receiving side 1604 of the AM RLC entity 1600 performs routing 1620 of AMD PDUs from lower layers through logical channel 1610 and stores them in a reception buffer 1622. The receiving side 1604 of the AM RLC entity 1600 then removes 1624 the RLC header, performs SDU reassembly 1626, and provides the RLC SDUs to the upper layer through the AM-RLC channel 1608. When the receiving side 1604 of the AM RLC entity 1600 receives AMD PDUs, it detects whether or not the AMD PDUs have been received in duplication and discards duplicated AMD PDUs. The receiving side 1604 of the AM RLC entity 1600 also detect the loss of AMD PDUs at lower layers and requests retransmissions to its peer AM RLC entity.

[0113] Embodiments herein refer to polling procedures and the implementation of poll (s) . The AM RLC entity 1600 can poll its peer AM RLC entity in order to trigger STATUS reporting at the peer AM RLC entity. Upon notification of a transmission opportunity by lower layer, for each AMD PDU submitted for transmission such that the AMD PDU includes either a not previously transmitted RLC SDU or an RLC SDU segment including not previously transmitted byte segment, the transmitting side 1602 of the AM RLC entity 1600 may increment PDU_WITHOUT_POLL by one, increment BYTE_WITHOUT_POLL by every new byte of Data field element that it maps to the Data field of the AMD PDU. Additionally, the transmitting side 1602 of the AM RLC entity 1600, if PDU_WITHOUT_POLL ≥ pollPDU, or if BYTE_WITHOUT_POLL ≥ pollByte, may include a poll in the AMD PDU. Upon notification of a transmission opportunity by the lower layer, for each AMD PDU submitted for transmission, the transmitting side 1602 of the AM RLC entity 1600 may, if both the transmission buffer and the retransmission buffer becomes empty (excluding transmitted RLC SDUs or RLC SDU segments awaiting acknowledgements) after the transmission of the AMD PDU, or if no new RLC SDU can be transmitted after the transmission of the AMD PDU (e.g. due to window stalling) include a poll in the AMD PDU. Note that an empty RLC buffer (excluding transmitted RLC SDUs or RLC SDU segments awaiting acknowledgements) may not lead to unnecessary polling when data awaits in the upper layer.

[0114] To include a poll in an AMD PDU, the transmitting side 1602 of the AM RLC entity 1600 may set the P field of the AMD PDU to “1, ” set PDU_WITHOUT_POLL to 0 and / or set BYTE_WITHOUT_POLL to 0. Upon submission of an AMD PDU including a poll to lower layer, the transmitting side 1602 of the AM RLC entity 1600 may set POLL_SN to the highest SN of the AMD PDU among the AMD PDUs submitted to lower layer. If t-PollRetransmit is not running the t-PollRetransmit may be started, otherwise the t-PollRetransmit may be restarted.

[0115] Upon reception of a STATUS report from the receiving RLC AM entity, the transmitting side 1602 of an AM RLC entity 1600 may, if the STATUS report comprises a positive or negative acknowledgement for the RLC SDU with sequence number equal to POLL_SN and if t-PollRetransmit is running, stop and reset t-PollRetransmit.

[0116] Upon expiry of t-PollRetransmit, the transmitting side 1602 of the AM RLC entity 1600 may, if both the transmission buffer and the retransmission buffer are empty (excluding transmitted RLC SDU or RLC SDU segment awaiting acknowledgements) or if no new RLC SDU or RLC SDU segment can be transmitted (e.g. due to window stalling) , consider the RLC SDU with the highest SN among the RLC SDUs submitted to lower layer for retransmission, or consider any RLC SDU which has not been positively acknowledged for retransmission. Additionally, the transmitting side 1602 of the AM RLC entity 1600 may include a poll in an AMD PDU.

[0117] FIG. 17 illustrates an example architecture of a wireless communication system 1700, according to embodiments disclosed herein. The following description is provided for an example wireless communication system 1700 that operates in conjunction with the LTE system standards and / or 5G or NR system standards as provided by 3GPP technical specifications.

[0118] As shown by FIG. 17, the wireless communication system 1700 includes UE 1702 and UE 1704 (although any number of UEs may be used) . In this example, the UE 1702 and the UE 1704 are illustrated as smartphones (e.g., handheld touchscreen mobile computing devices connectable to one or more cellular networks) , but may also comprise any mobile or non-mobile computing device configured for wireless communication.

[0119] The UE 1702 and UE 1704 may be configured to communicatively couple with a RAN 1706. In embodiments, the RAN 1706 may be NG-RAN, E-UTRAN, etc. The UE 1702 and UE 1704 utilize connections (or channels) (shown as connection 1708 and connection 1710, respectively) with the RAN 1706, each of which comprises a physical communications interface. The RAN 1706 can include one or more base stations (such as base station 1712 and base station 1714) that enable the connection 1708 and connection 1710.

[0120] In this example, the connection 1708 and connection 1710 are air interfaces to enable such communicative coupling, and may be consistent with RAT (s) used by the RAN 1706, such as, for example, an LTE and / or NR.

[0121] In some embodiments, the UE 1702 and UE 1704 may also directly exchange communication data via a sidelink interface 1716. The UE 1704 is shown to be configured to access an access point (shown as AP 1718) via connection 1720. By way of example, the connection 1720 can comprise a local wireless connection, such as a connection consistent with any IEEE 802.11 protocol, wherein the AP 1718 may comprise a  router. In this example, the AP 1718 may be connected to another network (for example, the Internet) without going through a CN 1724.

[0122] In embodiments, the UE 1702 and UE 1704 can be configured to communicate using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication signals with each other or with the base station 1712 and / or the base station 1714 over a multicarrier communication channel in accordance with various communication techniques, such as, but not limited to, an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) communication technique (e.g., for downlink communications) or a single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) communication technique (e.g., for uplink and ProSe or sidelink communications) , although the scope of the embodiments is not limited in this respect. The OFDM signals can comprise a plurality of orthogonal subcarriers.

[0123] In some embodiments, all or parts of the base station 1712 or base station 1714 may be implemented as one or more software entities running on server computers as part of a virtual network. In addition, or in other embodiments, the base station 1712 or base station 1714 may be configured to communicate with one another via interface 1722. In embodiments where the wireless communication system 1700 is an LTE system (e.g., when the CN 1724 is an EPC) , the interface 1722 may be an X2 interface. The X2 interface may be defined between two or more base stations (e.g., two or more eNBs and the like) that connect to an EPC, and / or between two eNBs connecting to the EPC. In embodiments where the wireless communication system 1700 is an NR system (e.g., when CN 1724 is a 5GC) , the interface 1722 may be an Xn interface. The Xn interface is defined between two or more base stations (e.g., two or more gNBs and the like) that connect to 5GC, between a base station 1712 (e.g., a gNB) connecting to 5GC and an eNB, and / or between two eNBs connecting to 5GC (e.g., CN 1724) .

[0124] The RAN 1706 is shown to be communicatively coupled to the CN 1724. The CN 1724 may comprise one or more network elements 1726, which are configured to offer various data and telecommunications services to customers / subscribers (e.g., users of UE 1702 and UE 1704) who are connected to the CN 1724 via the RAN 1706. The components of the CN 1724 may be implemented in one physical device or separate physical devices including components to read and execute instructions from a machine-readable or computer-readable medium (e.g., a non-transitory machine-readable storage medium) .

[0125] In embodiments, the CN 1724 may be an EPC, and the RAN 1706 may be connected with the CN 1724 via an S1 interface 1728. In embodiments, the S1 interface 1728 may be split into two parts, an S1 user plane (S1-U) interface, which carries traffic data between the base station 1712 or base station 1714 and a serving gateway (S-GW) , and the S1-MME interface, which is a signaling interface between the base station 1712 or base station 1714 and mobility management entities (MMEs) .

[0126] In embodiments, the CN 1724 may be a 5GC, and the RAN 1706 may be connected with the CN 1724 via an NG interface 1728. In embodiments, the NG interface 1728 may be split into two parts, an NG user plane (NG-U) interface, which carries traffic data between the base station 1712 or base station 1714 and a user plane function (UPF) , and the S1 control plane (NG-C) interface, which is a signaling interface between the base station 1712 or base station 1714 and access and mobility management functions (AMFs) .

[0127] Generally, an application server 1730 may be an element offering applications that use internet protocol (IP) bearer resources with the CN 1724 (e.g., packet switched data services) . The application server 1730 can also be configured to support one or more communication services (e.g., VoIP sessions, group communication sessions, etc. ) for the UE 1702 and UE 1704 via the CN 1724. The application server 1730 may communicate with the CN 1724 through an IP communications interface 1732.

[0128] FIG. 18 illustrates a system 1800 for performing signaling 1834 between a wireless device 1802 and a network device 1818, according to embodiments disclosed herein. The system 1800 may be a portion of a wireless communications system as herein described. The wireless device 1802 may be, for example, a UE of a wireless communication system. The network device 1818 may be, for example, a base station (e.g., an eNB or a gNB) of a wireless communication system.
