[0044] It is to be understood that the number of devices and their connections shown in FIG. 1 are only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitation. The communication environment 100 may include any suitable number of devices configured to implementing example embodiments of the present disclosure. Although not shown, it would be appreciated that one or more additional devices may be located in the cell 102, and one or more additional cells may be deployed in the communication environment 100. It is noted that although illustrated as a network device, the second apparatus 120 may be another device than a network device. Although illustrated as a terminal device, the first apparatus 110 may be another device than a terminal device.

[0045] In the following, for the purpose of illustration, some example embodiments are described with the first apparatus 110 operating as a UE and the second apparatus 120 operating as a base station. However, in some example embodiments, operations described in connection with a terminal device may be implemented at a network device or other device, and operations described in connection with a network device may be implemented at a terminal device or other device.

[0046] Communications in the communication environment 100 may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols, wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, the communication may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising but not limited to: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) , Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) , Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) , Time Division Duplex (TDD) , Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple (OFDM) , Discrete Fourier Transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0047] As described above, L1 / L2 Triggered Mobility (LTM) is a procedure in which a network device receives L1 measurement report (s) from a user device, and on their basis the network device changes a serving cell of the user device by a cell switch command signaled via a medium access control-control element (MAC-CE) .

[0048] FIG. 2 illustrates a signaling chart of an early TA acquisition. As shown in FIG. 2, UE 210 is in an RRC connected state. The UE 210 may send a measurement report, e.g., about at least one DL reference signal (RS) , to the gNB 220. Then the gNB 220 may perform candidate cell preparation for an LTM procedure and send up to 8 LTM candidate cells configuration via an RRC reconfiguration message. Upon receiving the configuration, the UE 210 may send an RRC reconfiguration complete message to the gNB 220.

[0049] During an early synchronization procedure, the UE 210 and the gNB 220 may perform a DL synchronization with LTM candidate cells and a UL synchronization with LTM candidate cells.

[0050] During an LTM execution procedure, the UE 110 may send a layer 1 (L1) or Layer 3 (L3) measurement report, e.g., Synchronization signal block (SSB) or channel state information RS (CSI-RS) , to the gNB 220. Based on the L1 or L3 measurement report, the gNB 220 may make an LTM decision and send a cell switch command to the UE 210 via a MAC-CE. Upon receiving the cell switch command, the UE 210 may detach from source cell and apply target cell configuration.

[0051] Optionally, and if not performed before the cell switch command, the UE 210 may perform an RA channel (RACH) procedure towards the target cell. Then the UE 210 may send an RRC reconfiguration complete message to the gNB 220. After that, the LTM cell switch is completed.

[0052] In the early TA acquisition shown in FIG. 2, if the candidate cell has the same NTA as the current serving cells or NTA=0, the early TA acquisition procedure may not be required. Otherwise, the network (e.g., the gNB 220) may request the UE 210 to perform the early TA acquisition of a candidate cell before a cell switch.

[0053] As an example, the early TA acquisition procedure may be triggered by PDCCH order from the serving cell. As another example, the early TA acquisition procedure may be realized through UE-based TA measurement as configured by an RRC signalling (a UE autonomous TA estimation) .

[0054] In the former case, the gNB to which the candidate cell belongs, may calculate the TA value based on the received preamble from the UE. A target gNB may send the result to the source gNB which is the serving cell of the UE. The serving cell may send the TA value to the UE in the LTM cell switch command (via MAC-CE) when triggering LTM cell switch.

[0055] In both cases the UE may perform RACH-less LTM upon receiving the cell switch command. The network may send a TA value in the LTM cell switch command MAC CE even without UE early TA acquisition.

[0056] FIG. 3 illustrates a signaling chart of an early TA acquisition based on the PDCCH order.

[0057] As shown in FIG. 3, the gNB 320 managing a Cell A may send, to the UE 310, an RRC reconfiguration message including TA acquisition configuration of a Cell B, which may manage by the gNB 330. Specifically, the gNB 320 to which Cell A belongs may provide the TA acquisition configuration to the UE 310 within the RRCReconfiguration message. The TA acquisition configuration may include all RRC configuration information required to send a RA preamble to Cell B so that the gNB 330 to which Cell B belongs can calculate a TA value to be used by the UE 310, e.g., in case an LTM cell switch procedure is executed to Cell B. The TA acquisition configuration may include information for one or multiple cells to which the TA acquisition procedure may be executed by the UE 310. Then the UE 210 may reply with an RRC reconfiguration complete message to the gNB 220.

[0058] The gNB 320 may send the PDCCH order indicating UE to perform TA acquisition procedure to Cell B. In this case, the gNB 320 to which Cell A belongs may send the PDCCH order message to the UE 310 in order to initiate a TA acquisition procedure with Cell B. For example, the PDCCH order message may include the information required to sends a RA Preamble to Cell B. Upon receiving the PDCCH order, a RA procedure may be triggered.

[0059] Then the UE 310 may send a RA preamble transmission to the gNB 330. For example, the UE 310 may send a RA preamble to Cell B so that the gNB 330 to which Cell B belongs can estimate a TA value to be used by the UE 310, e.g., if an LTM cell switch procedure is triggered to Cell B.

[0060] Alternatively, the gNB 310 to which Cell A belongs may indicate the retransmission of preamble for TA acquisition in case no TA is obtained.

[0061] After that, the gNB 320 may send a TA value, e.g., in a cell switch command indicating the Cell B as a target cell. In this case, the gNB 320 to which Cell A belongs may provide the TA value calculated by the gNB 330 to which Cell B belongs during the TA acquisition procedure, e.g. in an LTM cell switch command MAC CE which initiate cell switch procedure to Cell B.

[0062] Depending on the availability of a valid TA value, the UE may perform either a RACH-less LTM or RACH-based LTM cell switch.

[0063] If TA value is available at LTM switch and if the TA value is provided in the cell switch command, the UE may apply the TA value as provided by the network and performs RACH less LTM switch.

[0064] If TA value is not available at LTM switch and if the no TA value is provided in the cell switch command, the UE may perform a RACH based LTM switch.

[0065] The requirements for Release 18 LTM early TA acquisition based on PDCCH ordered RACH has been defined. The outcome of the Release 18 LTM feature relies on a very tight loop if the network wants to make use of the Early TA acquisition. Hence, if the UE is requested to send preamble to the target LTM for allowing the target LTM cell to estimate the TA, the target gNB may estimate the TA based on the received preamble from the UE. Once target cell has an estimated TA, it may share this with the UE’s current source cell who may then include the TA into the LTM cell switch command that is sent to the UE. Once the UE receives the LTM switch command with a TA value, the UE may switch to the indicated target cell and apply the indicated TA value. Hence, there is no reason for the UE to acquire TA value in the target cell during cell switch prior to being able to access the target (new source) cell.

[0066] A TA value is a value used by the UE to know how much the UE would advance its UL transmissions (relative to the received DL path) to ensure that network receives the UL transmissions from the UE (and other UEs in the cell) within the expected reception window. UEs not transmitting with correct TA value may cause UL interference at the gNB side which may reduce the overall performance.

[0067] The TA is initially estimated by the gNB by use of for example RACH procedure and preamble reception from the UE. The estimated TA may be delivered to the UE once estimated. The UE then may perform autonomous tracking of the TA value based on tracking of the DL from the source cell.

[0068] Furthermore, requirements for initial transmission timing and other UL transmissions are defined.

[0069] For the UE to transmit a preamble to a cell (for example the LTM candidate cell) the UE may need to tune to that cells downlink (DL) to ensure accurate transmit timing) and then transmit the preamble.

[0070] Depending on the UE capability, the UE may have the capability of DL time tracking from one or more sources (here cells) and transmit with different uplink timing. This is reflected in the UE capability or feature group table here:

[0071] For example, there could be following two UE implementations: - UE capable of time tracking of 2 sources (here cells) but only capable of single  transmission (1 UL) . In this case, the UE may need to tune from serving cell to candidate cell to transmit the preamble to the candidate cell (based on the candidate DL timing) . In this case, the UE may not be available in the source cell during the preamble transmission (39-4) . - UE capable of time tracking of 2 sources (here cells) and capable of transmission  towards two targets possibly with different or independent TA values (2 UL) . In this case, the UE may need to activate another RF chain (RX / TX) in addition to the RF chain used for the serving cell. This 2nd RF chain may be used to transmit the preamble to the candidate cell (based on the candidate DL timing) . In this case, the UE may not be available in the source cell during the 2nd RF chain on / off switching but may be available during the preamble transmission (39-4a) .

[0072] The current LTM and TA acquisition procedure may add complexity and strict timing requirements to the network and the procedure. In addition, the early TA acquisition may cause interruptions to the serving cell, or scheduling restrictions are defined.

[0073] FIG. 4 illustrates an example of capabilities associated with the PDCCH ordered RACH transmission. As shown, upon receiving the PDCCH order message 401, the UE may need to retune to the target cell and interrupt the serving cell data transmission (420 and 430) when entering / existing the RACH transmission 410.

[0074] The UE may cause interruption to serving cell data transmission when the UE needs to retune to the candidate frequency. In addition to this, the PRACH may cause interruptions to serving cell data transmission. Adding more hardware to the UE to perform simultaneous data transmissions for RACH purposes is costly and not always possible in all of the implementations. Additionally, more hardware may usually consume more energy.

[0075] Therefore, how to eliminate the interruptions and scheduling restrictions to serving cell when UE is required to retune to the target cell may need to be further studied.

[0076] Example embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution for TA acquisition. In this solution, the first apparatus receives, from a second apparatus, an indication for triggering a TA acquisition procedure associated with a candidate cell of the first apparatus. Upon the triggering of the TA acquisition procedure, the first apparatus suspends the TA acquisition procedure until a TA occasion with which an interruption for at least a serving cell of the first apparatus caused by the TA acquisition procedure does not exceed a threshold. Then the first apparatus performs the TA acquisition procedure at the TA occasion.

[0077] Example embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0078] The early TA acquisition proposed in the present disclosure may be referred to an opportunistic early TA acquisition. In this solution, the UE may be pre-configured with one or more preamble (s)  / RACH occasions for one or more mobility candidate cells (e.g., for an LTM switch or handover (HO) ) while the execution of the preamble transmission (to the one or more candidate cells) is opportunistic on UE side, and depending on UE conditions and UE causing interruptions towards serving cell.

[0079] FIG. 5 illustrates an example process of an opportunistic early TA acquisition according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0080] As shown in FIG. 5, upon receiving an opportunistic TA trigger 501, the first apparatus may evaluate an opportunity determination for a TA acquisition within a time period 510. For example, Evaluation may be based on AI determination and inputting, for instance historical scheduling / activity duration, (SSB) measurement durations and RACH occasions.

[0081] Then the first apparatus 110 may wait until there is a break in serving cell scheduling and perform a PRACH transmission without interrupting serving cell within a time period 530. For example, the scheduling break may be less than or equal to a PRACH process duration 520 with or without retuning.

[0082] For example, the first apparatus 110 may determine RACH occasions (e.g., 540) and SSB location with respect to scheduling and determine whether there is enough time to perform PRACH transmission.

[0083] In some examples, the first apparatus 110 may only perform the opportunistic TA if there is no retuning required (i.e., shorted delay) . For example, when the target frequency of preamble transmission does not cause retuning (e.g., is within active BWP or within a bandwidth location in relation to serving UL bandwidth that no retuning is required.

[0084] Reference is now made to FIG. 6, which shows a signaling chart 600 of communication according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 6, the signaling chart 600 involves a first apparatus 110, a second apparatus 120 and a third apparatus 130. For the purpose of discussion, reference is made to FIG. 1 to describe the signaling chart 600.

[0085] As shown in FIG. 6, the first apparatus 110 is in a connected mode and may receive, for instance, LTM or handover configuration from the second apparatus 120 to which a serving cell of the first apparatus 110 belongs. This configuration may also include a configuration (e.g., a flag or a specific RACH configuration for opportunistic TA acquisition) . Prior to this, the first apparatus 110 may have indicated via capability signaling it is able to perform opportunistic early TA acquisition.

[0086] Specifically, during the LTM preparation, the first apparatus 110 may send (602) a measurement report, e.g., including at least one LTM candidate cell, to the second apparatus 120. Then the second apparatus 120 may perform (604) an LTM candidate preparation and send (606) an LTM candidate cell configuration via an RRC reconfiguration message. Upon receiving the configuration, the first apparatus 110 may (608) send an RRC reconfiguration complete message to the second apparatus 120.

[0087] Then the first apparatus 110 may receive (610) , from the second apparatus, an indication for triggering a TA acquisition procedure associated with a candidate cell of the first apparatus. The early TA acquisition procedure used hereinafter may be referred to an opportunistic early TA acquisition.

[0088] For example, the indication for triggering the TA acquisition procedure may be transmitted via or included in a PDCCH ordered RACH, a periodical configuration associated with the RA procedure, downlink control information (DCI) , a MAC-CE command, or a network DL message associated with the opportunistic or interruption-less TA procedure. The term “interruption-less” may be referred to as non-interruption or having an interruption that does not exceed a threshold. Interruption-less may also mean that the first apparatus 110 selects an occasion from a time window that causes minimum amount of interruption to the transmission.

[0089] For example, in an Opportunistic early TA acquisition, the first apparatus 110 may perform interruption-less TA acquisition procedure, where the first apparatus 110 may perform PRACH transmission  / preamble transmission in a manner that does causes zero or less than a threshold interruption to the network scheduled data traffic. Opportunistic early TA acquisition may also include TA acquisition from the target cell directly, or via source cell. It may be that both, preamble transmission and TA reception are interruption-less or it may be that only one of them is.

[0090] In some other examples, the indication for triggering the TA acquisition procedure may also indicate a timer. Upon triggering the TA acquisition procedure, the timer may start at the first apparatus. That is, the duration of the timer may correspond to a time period within which a TA acquisition opportunity is to be determined.

[0091] In this case, the first apparatus 110 may be configured with the timer, in which the first apparatus 110 may trigger the TA acquisition (e.g., transmit a preamble) . The first apparatus 110 may or may not need to finish the procedure before the timer expiry.

[0092] As an example, the timer may be started once the TA trigger occurs. Once the timer is started, the first apparatus 110 may perform evaluation / search of non-interruptive TA acquisition occasions. If the occasion is found, the first apparatus 110 may perform TA acquisition (e.g. transmits a preamble to the target cell) .

[0093] As an example, during the timer, the UE may perform evaluation  / search of the interruption-less occasion for PRACH transmission and also for TA reception. These may both be performed during the timer, or the reception of the TA may not be performed within the duration of the timer, but outside of it.

[0094] As an example, the timer may determine the interruption-less time window. The timer may be started once the TA trigger occurs and UE perform interruption-less, TA acquisition procedure.

[0095] Upon timer expiration, the first apparatus 110 may stop evaluating or searching for TA occasions. If first apparatus 110 has not started the acquisition of the preamble upon the timer expiration, the first apparatus 110 may transmit preamble to the target cell, which causes interruption or may not to transmit, and perform RACH during the cell switch or handover.

[0096] Based on the indication, the first apparatus 110 may evaluate (612) a TA opportunity and determine a waiting time or the next occasion when there is no or minimum amount of interruptions for the serving cell.

[0097] For instance, the first apparatus 110 may use synchronization system block configuration (e.g., periodicity) , RACH occasions, scheduling grant information, and DRX configuration to perform evaluation of the next possible opportunity.

[0098] As another example, the first apparatus 110 may also apply implementation specific information to the evaluation, for instance, how many slots the RF is retuning on a specific frequency, carrier or band.

[0099] As yet another example, the first apparatus 110 may initiate a timer based on UE configuration or implementation.

[0100] In this situation, the first apparatus 110, upon the triggering of the TA acquisition procedure, may suspend or wait (614) the TA acquisition procedure until a TA occasion with which an interruption for at least a serving cell of the first apparatus caused by the TA acquisition procedure does not exceed a threshold.

[0101] The threshold mentioned herein may be configured by the network, e.g., the second apparatus 120. For example, the threshold for the interruption may comprise a pre-defined amount of interruption tolerable for the serving cell, a pre-defined interruption time and / or no interruption time.

[0102] For example, the second apparatus 120 may configure or specify, instead of using minimum requirements, the first apparatus 110 with the pre-defined interruption time.

[0103] If the first apparatus 110 may guarantee that the interruption caused by the TA acquisition is less or equal than a configured / specified value, the first apparatus 110 may perform the TA acquisition. If, based on the evaluation of the first apparatus 110, the interruption caused is more, the evaluation result is negative, and the first apparatus 110 may not proceed with early TA acquisition procedure.

[0104] For example, if implementation of the first apparatus 110 determined interruption duration is 2 slots, and the PRACH transmission occasion is 1 slot, and the second apparatus 120 has configured a threshold to 5 slots. Then the first apparatus 110 may be allowed to retune 2 slots, perform RACH transmission in 1 slot and return within two slots. If the first apparatus 110 can do this, then first apparatus 110 may be always permitted to do UE based TA. However, for some UEs the duration may be longer, these UEs would either need to wait for a break in the serving cell scheduling to be able to perform the procedure or fall back to RACH if that fails.

[0105] While the first apparatus 110 is being scheduled, the first apparatus 110 may not attempt to initiate a RACH procedure but the first apparatus 110 may wait for the next opportunity.

[0106] For example, suspending time / waiting time for the TA acquisition procedure may be associated with an outcome of the evaluation of the first apparatus, a duration for determining the TA occasion, the TA occasion determined by the first apparatus, a configuration received from the second apparatus and / or the next DRX occasion.

[0107] As an option, if the waiting time for the TA acquisition procedure past or a TA occasion is determined, the first apparatus 110 may retune (616) the candidate cell. Then the first apparatus 110 may send (618) a preamble transmission to the third apparatus 130, to which the candidate cell belongs and receive (620) a target cell TA value from the third apparatus 130. After that the first apparatus 110 may retune (622) to the serving cell of the first apparatus 110.

[0108] That is, the first apparatus 110 may have determined that the RACH procedure does not cause interruption to serving cell data transmission and proceed with the procedure.

[0109] For example, the preambles used for the preamble transmission may be configured by an RRC signaling, e.g. together with the candidate configuration. It is also possible that the configuration of preambles may be a PDCCH order based or DL trigger based, e.g., network DL message associated with an opportunistic early TA configuration.

[0110] Once the preambles are configured, they may be used for TA acquisition in the target cells. For example, the first apparatus 110 may acquire TA of the indicated or evaluated candidate cell triggered by network command (such as PDCCH order) , but preamble transmission of the first apparatus 110 may be done in a way that does not cause interruptions to the serving cell (s) . For instance, during unscheduled durations or outside of the active time.

[0111] As another example, the first apparatus 110 may acquire TA of the indicated or evaluated candidate cell and the preamble to be used may be a preamble configured together with the candidate cells.

[0112] FIG. 7 illustrates an example of a timer in which the UE triggers the TA acquisition according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0113] As shown in FIG. 7, the timer starts upon receiving the TA trigger 701 and runs within a time duration 710. During a time period 740 within which the first apparatus 110 is being scheduled, the first apparatus 110 may wait (720) for the next opportunity for the TA acquisition. The next opportunity for the TA acquisition may be in the time period 730 which belongs to a non-interruption duration.

[0114] As an option, if the first apparatus 110 sends at least one preamble transmission 703, the timer may be invalid. As another option, if the first apparatus 110 receives a TA value 705, the timer may be invalid. If there is no If no preamble transmission or TA value reception, either transmit preamble or perform RACH during interruption the expiration of the timer.

[0115] As an option, the first apparatus 110 may determine a time period 740 (shown in FIG. 7) within which a specified signaling or a transmission of data with a specified type is to be received from the serving cell and determine the TA occasion outside the time period. Because for a specific signaling or data type (or SRB  / DRB configuration) , the first apparatus 110 may not be allowed to cause interruptions on scheduling.

[0116] TA acquisition may be triggered by a PDCCH ordered RACH, a periodical configuration, e.g., every xms the first apparatus is performing RACH to the best target cell or DL Trigger (e.g., associated control command) for instance TCI state activation MAC-CE initiates the first apparatus to start to search for interruption free TA opportunity.

[0117] If there are no opportunities to acquire early TA without causing serving cell interruption, the early procedure may be not performed, and the first apparatus 110 may fall back to RACH procedure performed during cell switch interruption time (e.g. after cell switch command or handover command, or during cell switch that is triggered by a condition for CLTM being met) .

[0118] Referring back to FIG. 6, as another option, the first apparatus 110 may obtain a discontinuous reception (DRX) period of the first apparatus 110 and determine 624 the TA occasion within the DRX period. That is, the first apparatus 110 may have determined that, upon entering DRX the first apparatus 110, may perform the RACH transmission.

[0119] Upon entering DRX, when the serving cell scheduling is OFF, the first apparatus 110 may retune (626) the candidate cell. Then the first apparatus 110 may send (628) a preamble transmission to the third apparatus 130, to which the candidate cell belongs and receive (630) a target cell TA value from the third apparatus 130, for example, via a target cell MAC-CE . Although not shown in FIG. 3, it is also possible that the first apparatus 110 may obtain a TA value from a source cell TA value command.

[0120] After that the first apparatus 110 may retune (632) to the serving cell of the first apparatus 110. If the first apparatus 110 determines (634) that the DRX is ON, the first apparatus 110 may be (636) available for scheduling.

[0121] FIG. 8 illustrates an example of TA opportunity based on a DRX according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 8, the TA opportunity  / non serving cell scheduling may be determined as DRX duration. In other words, the first apparatus 110 may wait for DRX period  / occasion after the RACH process has been triggered by the network.

[0122] Upon receiving the early TA request command 801, the first apparatus 110 may wait for the first TA opportunity with period 810. When entering DRX 802, the first apparatus 110 may calculate TA before the next on-duration 830 within time window 820 there is enough time for TA acquisition. Then the first apparatus 110 may send a preamble transmission 803. Upon the first apparatus being scheduled, the network may provide TA which may be maintained for a certain period, e.g., 5s.

[0123] Referring back to FIG. 6, after the TA acquisition, the first apparatus 110 may perform (638) a cell switch or handover execution. It is to be understood that the first apparatus 110 may also obtain a TA value via a cell switch message (e.g. a MAC CE message, or other in-band message, or control message) or obtain a dedicated TA value (e.g. via a MAC CE dedicated for TA value indication or other in-band message, or control message) .

[0124] As described above, the solution of the present disclosure may allow the first apparatus 110 to delay the execution or even suspend execution of the early TA acquisition procedure. For instance, after the first apparatus 110 has received PDCCH ordered RACH, the first apparatus 110 may determine and delay (wait) until there is a break in the serving cell data transmission.

[0125] Then a PRACH transmission may be performed when the first apparatus 110 has an opportunity to transmit the preamble when the this causes no, or pre-defined amount, or minimal amount of interruptions to the serving cell.

[0126] FIG. 9 shows a flowchart of an example method 900 implemented at a first apparatus in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 900 will be described from the perspective of the first apparatus 110 in FIG. 1.
