Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to devices and methods of communication. In one aspect, a terminal device may receive a first configuration indicating first and second resource sets from a network device. One or more resources in the first resource set are associated with a first resource in the second resource set. The terminal device may determine first information related to NF or FF by performing an RS measurement for at least one of the first or second resource set. Based on the first information, the terminal device may transmit, to the network device, second information related to NF or FF. In this way, NF and FF differentiation may be achieved based on measurement and report of a terminal device.

Description

DEVICES AND METHODS OF COMMUNICATIONTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] Embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to the field of telecommunication, and in particular, to methods, devices and computer storage media of communication for multiple input multiple output (MIMO) .BACKGROUND

[0002] Number of antennas may be much higher for MIMO in future, which is sometimes called extremely large-scale (XL) -MIMO. It is argued that evolution from massive MIMO to XL-MIMO may fundamentally changes channel characteristics, e.g., shifting from a far-field uniform plane wave (UPW) to a non-uniform spherical wave (NUSW) propagation and from spatial stationarity to spatial non-stationarity. Currently, study on channel modelling enhancements for 7-24GHz for new radio (NR) is investigating a channel model with consideration of near field (NF) impact and spatial non-stationarity impact.SUMMARY

[0047] FIG. 1A illustrates an example communication network 100A in which embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. As shown in FIG. 1A, the communication network 100 includes a terminal device 110 and a network device 120 served by the terminal device 110.

[0048] Although not shown, the terminal device 110 may have a plurality of antennas, and the network device 120 may have a plurality of antennas. The terminal device 110 may transmit information to the network device 120 or receive information from the network device 120 via one or more of the plurality of antennas. The plurality of antennas of the terminal device 110 may comprise one or more transmit antennas and one or more receive antennas. The plurality of antennas of the network device 120 may also comprise one or more transmit antennas and one or more receive antennas.

[0049] It is to be understood that the communication network 100A may include any suitable number of network devices and / or terminal devices and / or antennas adapted for implementing implementations of the present disclosure.

[0050] The communications in the communication network 100A may conform to any suitable standards including, but not limited to, global system for mobile communications (GSM) , long term evolution (LTE) , LTE-evolution, LTE-advanced (LTE-A) , NR, wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) , code division multiple access (CDMA) , GSM EDGE radio access network (GERAN) , machine type communication (MTC) and the like. The embodiments of the present disclosure may be performed according to any generation communication protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Examples of the communication protocols include, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, 5.5G, 5G-advanced networks, or the sixth generation (6G) networks.

[0051] Communication in a direction from the terminal device 110 towards the network device 120 is referred to as UL communication, while communication in a reverse direction from the network device 120 towards the terminal device 110 is referred to as DL communication. A wireless communication channel may comprise a physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) , a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) , a physical random-access channel (PRACH) , a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) , a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) and a physical broadcast channel (PBCH) .

[0052] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may perform a UE initiated (UEI) procedure if an event trigger report is configured. When a condition of the event is met, the terminal device 110 may initiate the UEI procedure. FIG. 1B illustrates a signaling chart 100B illustrating an example report procedure in which some embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. As shown in FIG. 1B, at step 150, the network device 120 may transmit a configuration indicating an event trigger report to the terminal device 110. For example, the configuration may comprise an event configuration. At step 151, the terminal device 110 may transmit a first UL channel to the network device 120. Optionally, at step 152, the terminal device 110 may receive a response to the first UL channel from the network device 120. At step 153, the terminal device 110 may transmit a second UL channel to the network device 120. Optionally, at step 154, the terminal device 110 may receive a response to the second UL channel from the network device 120.

[0053] There are Mode A and Mode B for report with UL channels. For Mode A, uplink control information (UCI) is dynamically scheduled by the network device 120. For example, the terminal device 110 may transmit a first PUCCH (one-bit / multi-bit) to request a resource for the second UL channel to carry the report at the step 151. The terminal device 110 may detect a downlink control information (DCI) format to indicate the resource for the second UL channel to carry the report at the step 152. Then the terminal device 110 may transmit the report in the second UL channel at the step 153.

[0054] For Mode B, UCI is in pre-configured resource (s) for the second UL channel. For example, the terminal device 110 may transmit a first PUCCH (one-bit / multi-bit) notifying the second UL channel to carry the report at the step 151. Then the terminal device 110 may transmit the first report in the second UL channel at the step 153.EXAMPLE IMPLEMENTATION OF NF AND FF DIFFERENTIATION

[0055] Embodiments of the present disclosure provide solutions of differentiating near field and far field. These solutions will be described in connection with FIGs. 2 to 4 below.

[0056] FIG. 2 illustrates a signaling chart illustrating an example process 200 of communication according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 200 will be described with reference to FIG. 1A. The process 200 may involve the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 as illustrated in FIG. 1A. It is to be understood that steps and an order of the steps in FIG. 2 are merely for illustration, and not for limitation. For example, the order of the steps may be changed. Some of the steps may be omitted or any other suitable additional steps may be added.

[0057] As shown in FIG. 2, at step 210, the network device 120 may transmit, to the terminal device 110, a first configuration indicating a first resource set and a second resource set. One or more resources in the first resource set may be associated with one resource (for convenience, also referred to as a first resource herein) in the second resource set. For example, a resource may be a CSI-RS resource or SSB resource. In some examples, the first resource set may be CSI-RS resource (s) , and the second resource set may be SSB resource (s) .

[0058] In some embodiments, the first configuration may include a resource configuration indicating an RS transmitted from different antennas, e.g., a resource for first antenna (s) , a resource for second antenna (s) , or a resource for both the first antenna (s) and second antenna (s) . The RS may be a DL RS including CSI-RS, SSB, TRS, DMRS or PRS, or the RS may be a sensing RS. The terms ‘antenna’ , ‘antenna element’ , ‘antenna group’ , ‘antenna port’ , and ‘panel’ may be interchangeably used.

[0059] In some embodiments, the first configuration may include a report configuration. The report configuration may indicate report content. The report content may include first information related to near field or far field as described later. Additionally or alternatively, the report content may include selected antenna (s) for near field, or selected antenna (s) for a distance / location. The reason is different terminal device at different distance / location may only be visible to a part of the antennas at NW. Additionally, the report content may include selected antenna (s) for far field. In some embodiments, the report content may be configured explicitly, or be linked to an event if an event trigger report is used.

[0060] In some embodiments, the report configuration may indicate time domain behavior, e.g., event trigger, periodic, semi-persistent, or aperiodic. In some embodiments, the report configuration may indicate an event configuration. In some embodiments, the report configuration may indicate UL resource (s) for report.

[0061] In some embodiments, the first configuration may also include a beam set configuration indicating a first set of beams used in near field and a second set of beams used in far field. In some embodiments, the first set of beams may be distance / location dependent. That is, for the same direction or angle, there are different beams for different distance. In some embodiments, the second set of beams may be not distance / location dependent.

[0062] In some embodiments, the first resource set may be associated with the first set of beams and the second resource set may be associated with the second set of beams. One or more beams in the first set of beams may be associated with a same angular domain parameter and may be associated with one beam (for convenience, also referred to as a first beam herein) in the second set of beams.

[0063] For example, for the same direction, there are more than one beams in the first set of beams. In other words, a subset / group of beams in the first set of beams are associated. In some embodiments, the association may be based on an angular domain parameter, such as a direction or a pointing angle. The angular domain parameter may point to the same direction but cover different locations.

[0064] In addition, one or more beams in the first set of beams may be associated with one beam (i.e., first beam) in the second set of beams. The association may be based on an angular domain parameter, such as the direction or the pointing angle. The angular domain parameter may point to the same direction but cover different locations.

[0065] FIG. 3A illustrates a diagram 300A illustrating example near field and far field beams according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. With reference to FIG. 3A, for example, beams 301, 302 and 303 may belong to the first set of beams for near field, and a beam 304 may belong to the second set of beams for far field. The beams 301, 302 and 303 in the first set of beams and the beam 304 in the second set of beams are associated, based on the same or similar direction or angle. Alternatively, at least one beam in the first set of beams is the same as the beam 304 in the second set of beams.

[0066] In another example, the beams 301, 302 and 303 may belong to the first set of beams, and the beam 304 may belong to both the first and second sets of beams. The beams 301, 302, 303, 304 in the first set of beams are for near field and the beam 304 is also in the second set of beams which can be used for far field. It means that the beam 304 may also be used in near-field but the beam 304 may be a beam with the longest distance within near-field region.

[0067] FIG. 3B illustrates a diagram 300B illustrating an example association between near field and far field beams according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. Corresponding association configuration is also given in Table 1. As shown in Table 1 and FIG. 3B, {NF beam#1_k, #2_k, …, #N_k} in the first set of beams and {FF beam#k} in the second set of beams are associated, k = 1, 2, …, K, where K denotes the number of FF beams or the number of resources in the second resource set, and N denotes the number of NF beams or the number of resources in the first resource set which are associated with a FF beam. For different k, the number N may be different, e.g., Nk. Table 1

[0068] In some embodiments, the first configuration may also include a codebook configuration. The codebook configuration may indicate a first type of codebook used in the near field and a second type of codebook used in the far field. In some embodiments, one or more codewords in the first type of codebook may be associated with a same angular domain parameter and may be associated with one codeword in the second type of codebook.

[0069] In some embodiments, the second type of codebook is discrete Fourier transform (DFT) based. For example, the second type of codebook may be represented by Each codeword in the second type of codebook may point towards a specific spatial angle and may be given by where N denotes number of codewords. In some embodiments, the first type of codebook may or may not be DFT based.

[0070] In some embodiments, the first type of codebook is distance / location dependent. That is, there is a distance / location coefficient in the first type of codebook. In some embodiments, the distance may be represented in Cartesian domain, for example, W = [a (x, y) , …] , where x, y denotes the target location in Cartesian plane. In some embodiments, the distance may be represented in Polar domain, for example, W= [a (r, θ) , …] where r, θ denotes (radius, angle) , i.e., the target location in Polar plane. In some embodiments, the distance may be represented in slope-Intercept Domain, for example, W = [a (k, b) , …] where k, b denotes (slope, intercept) , i.e., the target location in slope-Intercept plane. In some embodiments, the second type of codebook does not have distance coefficient.

[0071] In some additional embodiments, there is a subset / group of codewords in the first type of codebook which are associated based on an angular domain parameter. For example, in the polar domain: for a given θ , there are a group of codewords in the first type of codebook a (r1, θ) , a (r2, θ) , …, a (rK, θ) .

[0072] In some additional embodiments, the first type codebook and the second type codebook are associated based on an angular domain parameter. For example in the polar domain: for a given θ, a group of codewords in the first type of codebook a (r1, θ) , a (r2, θ) , …, a (rK, θ) , and at least one codeword in the second type of codebook are associated, where θ and are associated with the same or similar spatial angle, or in other words, θ and may have same or similar spatial or angular solution.

[0073] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may not expect to be configured with the first configuration upon a set of parameters do not meet a condition. In other words, the process 200 may be only suitable for the cases that a near-field channel is possible, for example, at least one of the set of parameters meets the condition.

[0074] In some embodiments, the set of parameters may comprise at least one of the following: number of antennas; array aperture at a transmitter; array aperture at a receiver; wavelength; carrier frequency; antenna spacing at the transmitter; antenna spacing at the receiver; diagonal length of an antenna element; horizontal or vertical length of an array; incident or rotated angle at the transmitter; incident or rotated angle at the receiver; or trace or norm or covariance matrix of MIMO channel matrix.

[0075] In some embodiments, if the number of antennas is larger than or equal to a threshold value, the terminal device 110 may determine that the condition is met. In some embodiments, if array aperture, array aperture at the transmitter and / or receiver is larger than or equal to a threshold value, the terminal device 110 may determine that the condition is met. In some embodiments, if wavelength is smaller than or equal to a threshold value, or the carrier frequency is larger than or equal to a threshold value, the terminal device 110 may determine that the condition is met. In some embodiments, if antenna spacing at the transmitter and / or receiver is larger than or equal to a threshold value, the terminal device 110 may determine that the condition is met. In some embodiments, if diagonal length of each antenna element, and / or horizontal and / or vertical lengths of the array, is larger than or equal to a threshold value, the terminal device 110 may determine that the condition is met. In some embodiments, if incident angle, and / or rotated angle at the transmitter and / or receiver, is larger than or equal to a threshold value, the terminal device 110 may determine that the condition is met.

[0076] In other words, the terminal device 110 does not expect to configured with the measurement, report and event related to information (also referred to as first information herein) related to near field or far field if one or more of the set of parameters do not meet the condition or threshold value. In some embodiments, the network device 120 does not configure the measurement, report and event related to the first information if one or more of the set of parameters do not meet the condition or threshold value.

[0077] In some embodiments, as shown in step 211, the terminal device 110 may transmit, to the network device 120, information (also referred to as third information herein) of the set of parameters. In some embodiments, the third information may comprise values of parameters in the set of parameters, e.g., exact values, or index / range of the values. In some embodiments, the third information may comprise an indication indicating whether the set of parameters meet the condition. It is to be noted that any combinations of the above third information may also be feasible. As shown in step 212, if the set of parameters meet the condition, the terminal device 110 may receive the first configuration from the network device 120.

[0078] In some embodiments, the network device 120 may provide explicit indication to enable / disable the measurement, report and event related to the first information. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may report its capability of supporting measurement, report and event related to the first information.

[0079] With reference to FIG. 2, at step 220, the terminal device 110 may determine first information related to near field or far field by performing a reference signal measurement for at least one of the first resource set or the second resource set. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may measure a reference signal transmitted from different antennas. For example, the terminal device 110 may measure different resources such as a resource from first antenna (s) and a resource from second antenna (s) . Alternatively, the terminal device 110 may measure different antennas based on a resource for both the first and second antenna (s) . Based on the report configuration, or event configuration, or measurement configuration, the measurement is used to determine the first information.

[0080] In some embodiments, the first information may comprise power difference or maximum power difference among antennas or resources. In some embodiments, the maximum power difference may comprise at least one of the following: maximum power difference among antennas; maximum power difference among the one or more resources in the first resource set and the first resource in the second resource set; or maximum power difference among the one or more resources in the first resource set.

[0081] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may measure power of each antenna and calculate power difference between each two different antennas. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may measure power of the first and last antennas and consider the power difference as maximum power difference. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may measure power of a reference antenna and a target antenna, and calculate power difference. The target antenna may be any antenna except the reference antenna. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may measure power of the first and last antennas and consider the power difference as maximum power difference. The first and last antennas may be the antennas with lowest and highest index, or the earliest and latest to be detected in time. It is to be noted that the power may be in terms of RSRP. In some examples, power may be replaced by amplitude, energy, or gain.

[0082] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may use the measurement to determine power difference or maximum power difference among beams in the first set of beams and associated beam in the second set of beams, or power difference or maximum power difference among beams in the second set of beams and associated beams in the first set of beams.

[0083] In some embodiments, the beam in the second set of beams may be the best with largest measured RSRP among all beams in the second set of beams, and the beams in the first set of beams may be those associated with the beam in the second set of beams. In some examples, power difference among the group of beams in the first set of beams may be associated with the same angular domain parameter.

[0084] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may measure power of each beam and calculate power difference between each two beams. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may measure power of a reference beam and a target beam and calculate power difference. The target antenna may be any beam except the reference beam. In some embodiments, the reference beam may be the beam in the second set of beams. In some examples, the reference beam may be the beam in the first set of beams with the smallest / largest distance coefficient. In some embodiments, the reference beam may be the beam in the first set of beams with the smallest / largest beam index.

[0085] In some embodiments, the first information may comprise capacity difference among assumptions for near field or far field. In other words, the terminal device 110 may determine capacity difference under different assumptions.

[0086] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may calculate capacity assuming a codeword in the first type of codebook is used and the terminal device 110 may calculate capacity assuming a codeword in the second type of codebook is used. Then the terminal device 110 may calculate the capacity difference under different assumption (e.g., using different codebook) . In some embodiments, different assumptions may include NF assumption and FF assumption. In some embodiments, different assumptions may include plane wave assumption and spherical wave assumption. In some embodiments, capacity difference may also be rank difference, or multiplexing difference, or difference in the number of supported layers.

[0087] In some embodiments, the first information may comprise phase difference or maximum phase difference among antennas or resources. In some embodiments, the maximum phase difference may be based on at least one of the following: difference between phases of a reference antenna and a target antenna; difference between a measured phase and a derived phase of the target antenna; difference between a first antenna and a last antenna; or difference between phases of a strongest antenna and a weakest antenna.

[0088] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may measure phase of each antenna, and calculate phase difference between each two different antennas, e.g.,  In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may measure phase of reference antenna and target antenna, and calculate phase difference. The target antenna may be any antenna except the reference antenna, e.g.,

[0089] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may measure phase of the reference antenna, and derive the phase of target antenna based on a first assumption, e.g., plane wave assumption or FF assumption. The terminal device 110 may measure the phase of the target antenna, and then derive the difference between measured phase and derived phase, e.g.,  where i denotes i-th antenna. In some embodiments, the derived phase may be based on a second assumption, e.g., spherical wave assumption or NF assumption.

[0090] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may measure phase of the first and last antennas and consider this phase difference as maximum phase difference. The first and last antennas may be the antennas with lowest and highest index, or the earliest in time and latest in time to be detected. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may measure phase of the strongest antenna and weakest antenna and consider this phase difference as maximum phase difference. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may need to compare receive power to determine which is the strongest / weakest antenna.

[0091] In some embodiments, the first information may comprise difference among antenna sets selected for transmission. In some embodiments, the difference among antenna sets may comprise at least one of the following: difference among antenna sets selected for locations in the near field; or difference among antenna sets selected for the near field and the far field.

[0092] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may select different antennas suitable for near field at different locations. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may select different antennas suitable for near field and for far field respectively. In some embodiments, the selection may be based on the measured power, calculated maximum capacity, measured phase, etc.

[0093] It is to be noted that any combinations of the above first information may also be feasible.

[0094] At step 230, based on the first information, the terminal device 110 may transmit second information related to near field or far field to the network device 120. In some embodiments, in accordance with a determination that the first information meets a condition of an event for triggering the transmission of the second information, the terminal device 110 may transmit the second information. In other words, the terminal device 110 may perform a UEI procedure if an event trigger report is configured and the event is related to the first information. When the first information meets the condition of the event, the terminal device 110 may initiate the event trigger report procedure to deliver the second information.

[0095] In some embodiments, an event configuration may indicate a threshold value in the condition. Different first information may correspond to different threshold value in the condition. In some embodiments, the threshold value in the condition may be associated with a set of parameters comprising at least one of the following: number of antennas; array aperture at a transmitter; array aperture at a receiver; wavelength; carrier frequency; antenna spacing at the transmitter; antenna spacing at the receiver; diagonal length of an antenna element; horizontal or vertical length of an array; incident or rotated angle at the transmitter; incident or rotated angle at the receiver; or trace or norm or covariance matrix of MIMO channel matrix. For example, the threshold value may be a function of one or more parameters in the set of parameters.

[0096] In some embodiments, the event configuration may indicate time / counter related parameter, such as timer, time window, or number of instance occurrences for triggering the UEI report. It is to be noted that values of the threshold value, timer, counter and so on may also be based on NW indication, UE capacity reporting or predefined values.

[0097] In some embodiments, number of instance occurrences or consecutive instance occurrences may trigger the transmission or report of the second information. In some embodiments, if the number of event instances is configured, or a time window (or timer / counter) is configured, the terminal device 110 may need to monitor multiple instances in the time duration whether the first information meets the condition of the event.

[0098] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may provide the second information in PUCCH or PUSCH. In some embodiments, the second information may include the first information. That is, explicit and direct information related to near field or far field may be indicated to the network device 120.

[0099] In some examples, the second information may include maximum power difference, or power difference between two different antennas, or the power difference between strongest antenna and weakest antenna, or the power difference between reference antenna and target antenna, or the power of each antenna, strongest antenna, weakest antenna, reference antenna, and / or target antenna. In some examples, the second information may include an indication (e.g., 1-bit) that the maximum power difference is larger than or equal to a threshold value, e.g., 3dB. In some examples, the second information may include information on the antennas with largest and / or smallest power, e.g., antenna index, port index, antenna and / or port group index.

[0100] In some examples, the second information may include maximum power difference, or power difference between beams in the first beam set and associated beam in the second beam set. In addition, the terminal device 110 may report a beam in the first set of beams and a beam in the second set of beams.

[0101] In some examples, the second information may include maximum phase difference, or the phase difference between each two different antennas, or the phase difference between strongest antenna and weakest antenna, or the phase difference between reference antenna and target antenna, or the phase of each antenna, strongest antenna, weakest antenna, reference antenna, and / or target antenna. In some examples, the second information may include an indication (e.g., 1-bit) that the maximum phase difference is larger than or equal to a threshold value, e.g., pi / 8.

[0102] In some examples, the second information may include capacity difference under different assumptions. In some examples, the second information may include rank difference, or multiplexing difference, or difference in the number of supported layers. In addition, the terminal device 110 may report first CSI (e.g., RI / PMI / CQI) based on first type of codebook (or the first assumption) , and second CSI (e.g., RI / PMI / CQI) based on second type of codebook (or the second assumption) .

[0103] In some examples, the second information may include different selected antennas. In some examples, the terminal device 110 may report different antennas suitable for near field at different locations. In some examples, the terminal device 110 may report different antennas suitable for near field and for far field respectively.

[0104] In some embodiments, the second information may include implicit information related to near field or far field. In some embodiments, the second information may include an indication of a channel condition of the near field or far field, i.e., an indication of near-field or far-field channel condition at current location based on the first information. In some embodiments, the indication of the channel condition may be a 1-bit indication or a soft indication such as (0, 0.1, …, 0.9, 1) .

[0105] In some embodiments, the second information may include a request or decision based on the first information. In some embodiments, the second information may include a request (also referred to as a first request herein) to switch between a first type of codebook and a second type of codebook. In some embodiments, the second information may include a decision (also referred to as a first decision herein) to switch between the first type of codebook and the second type of codebook. In some embodiments, the second information may include a request (also referred to as a first request herein) to switch between the first resource set and the second resource set. In some embodiments, the second information may include a second decision (also referred to as a second decision herein) to switch between the first resource set and the second resource set.

[0106] In some embodiments, if the first request is transmitted to the network device 120, the terminal device 110 may switch between the first type of codebook and the second type of codebook based on reception of an indication of the switching from the network device 120. For example, if the first request is transmitted, the terminal device 110 may switch from applying the first codebook type to applying the second codebook type, or vice versa, based on NW indication.

[0107] In some embodiments, if the first decision is transmitted to the network device 120, the terminal device 110 may switch between the first type of codebook and the second type of codebook based on the first decision. For example, if the first decision is transmitted, the terminal device 110 may switch from applying the first codebook type to applying the second codebook type, or vice versa, autonomously.

[0108] In some embodiments, if the second request is transmitted to the network device 120, the terminal device 110 may switch between the first resource set and the second resource set based on reception of an indication of the switching between the first resource set and the second resource set from the network device 120. For example, if the second request is transmitted, the terminal device 110 may switch from using a beam in the first set of beams to using a beam the second set of beams, or vice versa, based on NW indication.

[0109] In some embodiments, if the second decision is transmitted to the network device 120, the terminal device 110 may switch between the first resource set and the second resource set based on the second decision. For example, if the second decision is transmitted, the terminal device 110 may switch from using a beam in the first set of beams to using a beam in the second set of beams, or vice versa, autonomously.

[0110] Continuing to refer to FIG. 2, at step 240, the terminal device 110 may receive an updated configuration (also referred to as a second configuration herein) from the network device 120. That is, the network device 120 may update or indicate a beam set and / or a codebook to be used based on difference between near-field and far-field.

[0111] In some embodiments, the second configuration may indicate the first resource set or the second resource set to be used for transmission. In some embodiments, the second configuration may include an indication of the usage of the first set of beams or the second set of beams. In some embodiments, TCI state may be configured with RS corresponding to the first set of beams or the second set of beams.

[0112] In some embodiments, the second configuration may indicate the first type of codebook or the second type of codebook to be used for transmission. That is, the second configuration may include an indication of the usage of first type of codebook or second type of codebook. For example, the second configuration may indicate different maximum number of supported layers. For example, a CSI (e.g., RI / PMI / CQI) report may be under the assumption of the first type of codebook or second type of codebook. For example, PMI may point to a codeword in the first type of codebook and the second type of codebook respectively.

[0113] In some embodiments, the second configuration may indicate an antenna set to be used for transmission. That is, the second configuration may include an indication of antennas used for transmission based on the reported selected antennas. For example, the second configuration may include all downlink transmission antennas for PDCCH, PDSCH, DMRS, and / or CSI-RS. In some examples, the antennas for UL reception may also be based on the reported selected antennas.

[0114] So far, a solution of differentiating near field and far field at a terminal device is described. With the solution, change between near-field and far-field channels may be determined and notified to NW. Application of optimal codebook and beams may be allowed accordingly to enhance transmission rate. It is to be noted that operations described in the process 200 may be carried out separately or in any suitable combinations.

[0115] Similarly, embodiments of the present disclosure also provide a solution of differentiating near field and far field at a network device. This solution will be described in connection with FIG. 4 below.

[0116] FIG. 4 illustrates a signaling chart illustrating an example process 400 of communication according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 400 will be described with reference to FIG. 1A. The process 400 may involve the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 as illustrated in FIG. 1A. It is to be understood that steps and an order of the steps in FIG. 4 are merely for illustration, and not for limitation. For example, the order of the steps may be changed. Some of the steps may be omitted or any other suitable additional steps may be added.

[0117] As shown in FIG. 4, at step 410, the network device 120 may transmit, to the terminal device 110, a third configuration indicating a third resource set and a fourth resource set. One or more resources in the third resource set may be associated with one resource (also referred to as a second resource herein) in the fourth resource set.

[0118] In some embodiments, the third resource set may be associated with a first set of beams and the fourth resource set may be associated with a second set of beams. One or more beams in the first set of beams may be associated with a same angular domain parameter and may be associated with a first beam in the second set of beams.

[0119] In some embodiments, the third resource set and the fourth resource set may be used for RS transmission. An RS may be a sounding reference signal (SRS) transmitted by the terminal device 110, a positioning RS transmitted by the terminal device 110, or a sensing RS transmitted by the network device 120 or the terminal device 110.

[0120] In some embodiments, the third configuration may include a resource configuration, e.g., RS resource or resource set. Additionally, the resource configuration may include a first set of beams for RS in near field, and a second set of beams for RS in far field. Additionally, the resource configuration may include a first type of precoder for RS in near field, and a second type of precoder for RS in far field. Additionally, the resource configuration may include the association between the first set of beams and the second set of beams, and the association between the first type of precoder and the second type of precoder. For example, one or more beams in the first set of beams may be associated with a same angular domain parameter and may be associated with one beam in the second set of beams. One or more codewords in the first type of precoder may be associated with a same angular domain parameter and may be associated with one codeword in the second type of precoder.

[0121] In some embodiments, the network device 120 may not configure the third configuration upon a set of parameters does not meet a condition. The set of parameters may comprise at least one of the following: number of antennas; array aperture at a transmitter; array aperture at a receiver; wavelength; carrier frequency; antenna spacing at the transmitter; antenna spacing at the receiver; diagonal length of an antenna element; horizontal or vertical length of an array; incident or rotated angle at the transmitter; incident or rotated angle at the receiver; or trace or norm or covariance matrix of MIMO channel matrix.

[0122] In some embodiments, if the number of antennas is larger than or equal to a threshold value, the network device 120 may determine that the condition is met. In some embodiments, if array aperture, array aperture at the transmitter and / or receiver is larger than or equal to a threshold value, the network device 120 may determine that the condition is met. In some embodiments, if wavelength is smaller than or equal to a threshold value, or the carrier frequency is larger than or equal to a threshold value, the network device 120 may determine that the condition is met. In some embodiments, if antenna spacing at the transmitter and / or receiver is larger than or equal to a threshold value, the network device 120 may determine that the condition is met. In some embodiments, if diagonal length of each antenna element, and / or horizontal and / or vertical lengths of the array, is larger than or equal to a threshold value, the network device 120 may determine that the condition is met. In some embodiments, if incident angle, and / or rotated angle at the transmitter and / or receiver, is larger than or equal to a threshold value, the network device 120 may determine that the condition is met.

[0123] In some embodiments, the network device 120 may transmit, to the terminal device 110, information (also referred to as fourth information herein) of the set of parameters. In some embodiments, the fourth information may comprise values of parameters in the set of parameters, e.g., exact values, or index / range of the values. In some embodiments, the fourth information may comprise an indication indicating whether the set of parameters meet the condition. It is to be noted that any combinations of the above fourth information may also be feasible. If the set of parameters meet the condition, the network device 120 may transmit the third configuration to the terminal device 110.

[0124] At step 420, the terminal device 110 may transmit RS as configured. In some example, the terminal device 110 may transmit RS using the first set of beams and the second set of beams, sequentially, and / or using the first type of precoder and the second type of precoder, sequentially.

[0125] At step 430, the network device 120 may perform RS measurement for at least one of the third resource set or the fourth resource set and determine first information related to near field or far field. The network device 120 may measure the first information per antenna, or calculate the first information by assuming near-field or far-field. It is to be noted that the determination of the first information may be implemented in a similar way as that described in the step 220, and thus other details are not repeated here for conciseness.

[0126] At step 440, the network device 120 may transmit, to the terminal device 110, the second configuration based on the first information. Other details of the second configuration are similar as that described in the step 240, and thus are not repeated here for conciseness.

[0127] So far, a solution of differentiating near field and far field at a network device is described. This solution may support NW to determine the change between near-field and far-field channels. It is to be noted that operations described in the process 400 may be carried out separately or in any suitable combinations.EXAMPLE IMPLEMENTATION OF BEAM SEARCH IN NF

[0128] Embodiments of the present disclosure also provide a solution of beam search in near field. This solution will be described in connection with FIG. 5 below.

[0129] FIG. 5 illustrates a signaling chart illustrating an example process 500 of communication according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 500 will be described with reference to FIG. 1A. The process 500 may involve the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 as illustrated in FIG. 1A. It is to be understood that steps and an order of the steps in FIG. 5 are merely for illustration, and not for limitation. For example, the order of the steps may be changed. Some of the steps may be omitted or any other suitable additional steps may be added.

[0130] With reference to FIG. 5, at step 510, the terminal device 110 may receive, from the network device 120, a fourth configuration indicating a first resource set and a second resource set. One or more resources in the first resource set may be associated with one resource in the second resource set. The first resource set may be associated with a first set of beams and the second resource set may be associated with a second resource set for a second set of beams. One or more beams in the first set of beams may be associated with a same angular domain parameter and may be associated with one beam in the second set of beams.

[0131] In some embodiments, the network device 120 may provide the first set of beams used in near field and the second set of beams used in far field. An RS may be a DL RS including CSI-RS or SSB. In some embodiments, the fourth configuration may include a resource configuration indicating two resource sets: the first resource set for the first set of beams, and the second resource set for the second set of beams. For example, a resource may be a CSI-RS resource or SSB resource. In some examples, the first resource set may be CSI-RS resource (s) , and the second resource set may be SSB resource (s) .

[0132] In some embodiments, the fourth configuration may include an association configuration. Based on an angular domain parameter, for example, a same or similar direction, a subset / group of beams in the first set of beams are associated. In addition, one or more beams in the first set of beams may be associated with one beam in the second set of beams. One example of association configuration may be given as shown in the above Table 1.

[0133] In some embodiments, the fourth configuration may include a report configuration. For example, the report configuration may indicate: CSI-RS resource indicator (CRI)  / SSB resource indicator (SSBRI) in the first set of beams, and / or CRI / SSBRI in the second set of beams. If two rounds of beam search is applied, the report configuration may indicate: CRI / SSBRI in the second set of beams in the first round, and CRI / SSBRI in the first set of beams in the second round. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may receive, from the network device 120, a configuration indicating the terminal device 110 reports the CRI / SSBRI in the second set of beams and the CRI / SSBRI in the first set of beams sequentially or jointly.

[0134] It is to be noted that the fourth configuration may be similar as the first configuration described in the step 210. Other details are not repeated here for conciseness.

[0135] As shown in step 520, the terminal device 110 may determine a first beam in the second set of beams by performing a measurement and report (also referred to as a first measurement and report herein) based on the second set of beams. This procedure may be called as a first round of beam search.

[0136] During the first round of beam search, the terminal device 110 may perform the measurement and report based on the second set of beams, e.g., RS resources configured in the second resource set. The terminal device 110 may report a selected beam (i.e., first beam) in the second set of beams, e.g., the beam in the second set of beams with largest measured RSRP. For example, with reference to Table 1, Resource#2 in Set 2 (i.e., FF beam#2) is reported in the first round of beam search. For example, a bitwidth of CRI / SSBRI in report may be determined by ceil (log2 (K) ) , where K denotes number of resources in the second resource set.

[0137] As shown in step 530, the terminal device 110 may determine a second beam in the first set of beams by performing a measurement and report (also referred to as a second measurement and report herein) based on a first part of beams (i.e., a subset of beams) in the first set of beams. The first part of beams is associated with the first beam in the second set of beams. This procedure may be called as a second round of beam search.

[0138] During the second round of beam search, the terminal device 110 may perform the measurement and report based on the first part of beams in the first beam set, e.g., a first part of RS resources configured in the first resource set. The first part of beams / resources are associated with the beam determined during the first round of beam search. The terminal device 110 may report a selected beam (i.e., second beam) in the first set of beams, e.g., the beam in the first set of beams with largest measured RSRP. For example, with reference to Table 1, Resource#2_2 in Set 1 (i.e., NF beam#2_2) is reported in the second round of beam search. For example, a bitwidth of CRI / SSBRI in report may be determined by ceil (log2 (N) ) , where N denotes number of resources in the first part of resources in the first resource set.

[0139] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may not measure one or more beams other than the first part of beams in the first set of beams.

[0140] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may report the first beam and the second beam together after the second measurement and report. That is, the terminal device 110 may report the selected beam in the second set of beams in the first round of beam search and the selected beam in the first set of beams in the second round of beam search together after the two rounds of beam search.

[0141] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may report the first beam or the second beam after the second measurement and report. That is, the terminal device 110 may report the selected beam in the second set of beams in the first round of beam search or the selected beam in the first set of beams in the second round of beam search together after the two rounds of beam search, based on e.g., RSRP. In this case, padding or zero padding may be needed, and a bitwidith of one CRI / SSBRI may be ceil (log2 (max (K’, K) ) ) , where K’ denotes number of resources in the first resource set and K denotes number of resources in the second resource set.

[0142] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may report the first beam to the network device 120 after the first measurement and report, and report the second beam after the second measurement and report.

[0143] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may report the first beam to the network device 120 after the first measurement and report, receive a configuration indicating the second measurement and report, and report the second beam after the second measurement and report. For example, the terminal device 110 may report the selected beam in the second set of beams in the first round of beam search after the first round of beam search. The network device 120 may transmit the first part of beams in the first set of beams based on the report of the first round of beam search from the terminal device 110. The terminal device 110 may report the selected beam in the first set of beams together after the second round of beam search.

[0144] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may assume that the first set of beams is not transmitted during the first measurement and report. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may assume that the second set of beams is not transmitted during the second measurement and report.

[0145] In some embodiments, the network device 120 may indicate the two rounds of beam search by configuring a report quantity as sequential or joint CRI / SSBRI in second set -RSRP –CRI / SSBRI in first set -RSRP. The terminal device 110 may report its capacity on supporting the two rounds of beam search.

[0146] As shown in step 540, the terminal device 110 may perform a communication with the network device 120 based on the second beam. For example, the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 may communicate via the selected beam in near-field or in far-field based on previous reports of the terminal device 110 and configuration of the network device 120.

[0147] It is to be noted that number of beam or resource sets in the present disclosure is not limited to two, and more beam or resource sets may also be feasible.

[0148] So far, a solution of beam search in near field is described. With the solution, complicity and overhead for beam search in near field may be reduced. It is to be noted that operations described in the process 500 may be carried out separately or in any suitable combinations. It is also to be noted that operations described in the processes 200, 400 and 500 may be carried out in any suitable combinations.EXAMPLE IMPLEMENTATION OF METHODS
