Description

Dual-Cartridge Explosion-Proof Venting ValveTechnical Field

[0001] Embodiments relate to an explosion-proof venting valve, and more specifically to an explosion-proof venting valve for a battery pack used for example in an electric vehicle.Background Art

[0002] For battery pack such as lithium iron phosphate or ternary lithium battery, if the battery pack is overcharged, overdischarged, short-circuited, mechanically damaged or under external high temperature, internal chemical reaction of the battery pack is out of control, resulting in a rapid increase in temperature and triggering a series of vicious reactions. The electrolyte and other combustible materials may burn, and the battery temperature will quickly rise to 300℃~1000℃, releasing a large amount of white smoke or gray smoke, including gases such as carbon monoxide (CO) which is flammable and toxic and hydrogen fluoride (HF) which is highly corrosive and toxic; particles containing heavy metals and toxic substances, which are harmful to the respiratory system; and / or other volatile organic compounds (VOC) . If these gases are not discharged to the exterior of the battery pack in time, internal pressure of the battery pack will rise sharply in a short period of time, resulting in bursting or even explosion of the battery pack, which will affect safety of passengers.

[0003] These gases are harmful to human health and can lead to poisoning or even inhalation if being inhaled by human too much. Materials inside the battery include potassium salts, lithium manganese oxide, etc., which produce a lot of smoke when burned. Smoke contains large amounts of fine particulate matter and organic matter, which pollutes air quality and increases risk of fire spreading. The lower housing of battery pack is usually made of metal materials such as aluminum, cobalt, manganese, etc., and when the battery bursts, the lower housing may crack, releasing metal fragments. These metal fragments can not only cause human injury, but also cause secondary fires. The existing explosion-proof valves cannot adsorb harmful gases and filter other harmful substances when the battery is abnormally vented in emergency, and cannot achieve that the flue gas is invisible.

[0004] In addition, a pressure difference between the interior of the battery pack and environment pressure is extremely large during thermal runaway event, and such pressure difference will negatively influence a filter efficiency of prior art explosion-proof venting valve.

[0005] To this end, it is desirable to develop an explosion-proof venting valve that is simple in structure, balances high pressure difference, and can reliably work under different operating conditions.Summary

[0045] According to one example, the valve body 9 may further comprise a valve cover mounting portion 95 extending downwardly from a top surface of the bottom plate 94. The valve cover mounting portion 95 is configured to be engaged with the valve cover 10. When the valve body 9 is engaged with the valve cover 10, there is radial gap (not shown) between an outer surface of the valve cover mounting portion 95 of the valve body 9 and an inner surface of vertical wall of the valve cover 10 at some circumferential positions. The radial gap is used for venting gas. By means of radial gap hidden between the outer surface of the valve cover mounting portion 95 of the valve body 9 and the inner surface of vertical wall of the valve cover 10, the membrane 98 can be protected, and foreign matter can be prevented from entering the explosion-proof venting valve 200.

[0046] The membrane 98 is water-impermeable and is gas-permeable. As shown in Fig. 3, the membrane 98 is disposed on below the intermediate plate 73 and above the valve cover 10. According to one example, the membrane 98 may be disposed on a bottom surface of the intermediate plate 73 of the valve assembly 7, as shall be understood for those skilled in the art, the membrane 98 may be disposed on any other suitable position, without departing the scope of the disclosure. The membrane 98 may be fixed to the intermediate plate 73 by any suitable means, such as by adhesive. The membrane 98 can be formed of a microporous material. The micropores in the material enable a gas transport through the membrane 98 but prevent moisture transport through the membrane 98. In particular, the membrane 98 can be formed of for example perfluorosulfonic acid, however, as shall be understood for those skilled in the art, the membrane 98 may be formed of any other suitable materials as needed, without departing the scope of the disclosure. The membrane 98 may comprise a hydrophobic coating thereon. By means of the hydrophobic coating, moisture in ambient air can be prevented from entering the first filter assembly 110 and the secondly filter assembly 120, thus increasing service life of the first filter assembly 110 and the secondly filter assembly 120.

[0047] The first filter assembly 110 is disposed in the filter chamber 69 and mounted to the first mounting flange 65. The second filter assembly 120 is disposed in the filter chamber 69 and mounted to the second mounting flange 66. According to one example, the first filter assembly 110 and the secondly filter assembly 120 have the same structure. As shall be understood for those skilled in the art, the first filter assembly 110 and the secondly filter assembly 120 may have different structure, without departing the scope of the disclosure.

[0050] By means of the first end cap 8, the first filter element 3 can be reliably positioned in the first outer support frame 2 and the first inner support frame 1 with a simple structure.

[0051] Fig. 6 is a schematic front view of the first inner support frame 1 of the first filter assembly 110 of the explosion-proof venting valve 200 of Fig. 1. As shown in Fig. 6, the first inner support frame 1 is hollow cylindrical and comprises a plurality of apertures 12 extending radially through side walls of the first inner support frame 1. The first outer support frame 2 may have the same structure as the first inner support frame 1, except that the first outer support frame 2 has a larger diameter than the first inner support frame 1, That is, the first outer support frame 2 is hollow cylindrical and comprises a plurality of apertures 12 extending radially through side walls of the first outer support frame 2. In addition, the apertures 12 of the first outer support frame 2 may be smaller than the apertures 12 of the first inner support frame 1.

[0052] Fig. 7 is a schematic cross-sectional view of a part of the first filter assembly 110 of the explosion-proof venting valve 200 of Fig. 1, showing the first filter element 3, the first outer support frame 2 and the first inner support frame 1. Fig. 8 is a schematic partial enlarged cross-sectional view of the first filter element 3 of Fig. 7.

[0053] The first filter element 3 is disposed in the first annular filter space 21 between the first outer support frame 2 and the first inner support frame 1. According to one example, the first filter element 3 may comprise a first inner filter mesh 33, a first outer filter mesh 31, and at least one first filter medium layer 32 disposed between the first inner filter mesh 33 and the first outer filter mesh 31. According to one example, the first inner filter mesh 33 and the first outer filter mesh 31 may be made of metal, to provide support and protection for the at least one first filter medium layer 32. As shall be understood for those skilled in the art, the first inner filter mesh 33 and the first outer filter mesh 31 may be made of any other suitable material, such as polyethylene, etc., without departing the scope of the disclosure.

[0054] By means of the multi-stage filtration of the first filter assembly 110, particles of different sizes, liquid and / or harmful gas can be reliably filtered out or absorbed, and the larger particles can be intercepted in the first inner support frame 1 and the first inner filter mesh 33 of the first filter assembly 110 to prevent from blocking the at least one first filter medium layer 32, resulting in unobstructed gas flow during thermal runaway event, and then avoiding explosion of the battery pack.

[0055] According to one example, the first filter element 3 may be zigzag folded between the first outer support frame 2 and the first inner support frame 1 to form a ring shape. Folded first filter element 3 increases filter area of the first filter assembly 110. The at least one first filter medium layer 32 may be fiber filter paper. As shall be understood for those skilled in the art, the at least one first filter medium layer 32 may be formed of any other suitable material, without departing the scope of the disclosure. According to one example, the at least one first filter medium layer 32 may comprise absorbent for absorbing harmful gas. In addition, the at least one first filter medium layer 32 may comprise a plurality of filter medium layers.

[0056] According to one example, the second filter assembly 120 may comprise: a second inner support frame 101 extending cylindrically along the second longitudinal axis 202; a second outer support frame 102 extending cylindrically along the second longitudinal axis 202 and being disposed radially outside of the second inner support frame 101 to define a second annular filter space 121 between the second outer support frame 102 and the second inner support frame 101; a second filter element 103 disposed in the second annular filter space 121; and a second end cap 108 holding a lower end of the second inner support frame 101 and a lower end of the second outer support frame 102, and supporting the second inner support frame 101, the second filter element 103 and the second outer support frame 102 on the valve body 9.

[0057] According to one example, the second end cap 108 may comprise a second annular plate body, a second inner protrusion 82 extending upwardly around an inner circumference of the second annular plate body, and a second outer flange 84 extending upwardly around an outer circumference of the second annular plate body. The second annular plate body closes a lower end of the second outer support frame 102 and a lower end of the second inner support frame 101, the second inner protrusion 82 abuts an inner side of the second inner support frame 101, and the second outer flange 84 abuts an outer side of the second outer support frame 102.

[0058] By means of the second end cap 108, the second filter element 103 can be reliably positioned in the second outer support frame 102 and the second inner support frame 101 with a simple structure.

[0059] The second inner support frame 101 of the second filter assembly 120 may have the same structure as the first inner support frame 1 of the first filter assembly 110. For example, the second inner support frame 101 is hollow cylindrical and comprises a plurality of apertures 12 extending radially through side walls of the second inner support frame 101. The second outer support frame 102 of the second filter assembly 120 may have the same structure as the first outer support frame 2 of the first filter assembly 110. For example, the second outer support frame 102 is hollow cylindrical and comprises a plurality of apertures 12 extending radially through side walls of the second outer support frame 102. In addition, the apertures 12 of the second outer support frame 102 may be smaller than the apertures 12 of the second inner support frame 101.

[0060] Fig. 9 is a schematic cross-sectional view of a part of the second filter assembly 120 of the explosion-proof venting valve 200 of Fig. 1, showing the second filter element 103, the second outer support frame 102 and the second inner support frame 101. Fig. 10 is a schematic partial enlarged cross-sectional view of the second filter element 103 of Fig. 9.

[0061] The second filter element 103 is disposed in the second annular filter space 121 between the second outer support frame 102 and the second inner support frame 101. According to one example, the second filter element 103 may comprise a second inner filter mesh 133, a second outer filter mesh 131, and at least one second filter medium layer 132 disposed between the second inner filter mesh 133 and the second outer filter mesh 131. According to one example, the second inner filter mesh 133 and the second outer filter mesh 131 may be made of metal, to provide support and protection for the at least one second filter medium layer 132. As shall be understood for those skilled in the art, the second inner filter mesh 133 and the second outer filter mesh 131 may be made of any other suitable material, such as polyethylene, etc., without departing the scope of the disclosure.

[0062] By means of the multi-stage filtration of the second filter assembly 120, particles of different sizes, liquid and / or harmful gas can be reliably filtered out or absorbed, and the larger particles can be intercepted in the second inner support frame 101 and the second inner filter mesh 133 of the second filter assembly 120 to prevent from blocking the at least one second filter medium layer 132, resulting in unobstructed gas flow during thermal runaway event, and then avoiding explosion of the battery pack.

[0063] According to one example, the second filter element 103 may be zigzag folded between the second outer support frame 102 and the second inner support frame 101 to form a ring shape. Folded second filter element 103 increases filter area of the second filter assembly 120. The at least one second filter medium layer 132 may be fiber filter paper. As shall be understood for those skilled in the art, the at least one second filter medium layer 132 may be formed of any other suitable material, without departing the scope of the disclosure. According to one example, the at least one second filter medium layer 132 may comprise absorbent for absorbing harmful gas. In addition, the at least one second filter medium layer 132 may comprise a plurality of filter medium layers.

[0064] By means of the first filter assembly 110 and the secondly filter assembly 120, toxic gases, particulate matter and / or metal fragments can be reliably filtered out when a thermal runaway event takes place in the battery pack.

[0065] The first filter assembly 110 is preassembled as a module, and can be easily mounted to the explosion-proof venting valve 200, thus facilitating assembly and replacement of the first filter assembly 110.

[0066] The secondly filter assembly 120 is preassembled as a module, and can be easily mounted to the explosion-proof venting valve 200, thus facilitating assembly and replacement of the secondly filter assembly 120.

[0067] According to one example, the filter cover 6 may comprise a plurality of mounting holes 62 for receiving fasteners such as bolt, screw, or the like. As shown in Fig. 2, there are six mounting holes 62 arranged in two rows. As shall be understood for those skilled in the art, the filter cover 6 may comprise any other suitable number of mounting holes 62 as needed, such as 3, 4, 5, etc., and the mounting holes 62 may be arranged in any other suitable way, without departing the scope of the disclosure.

[0068] In another aspect, a battery pack is provided. The battery pack comprises: a battery housing, at least one battery cell disposed in the battery housing, and the explosion-proof venting valve 200 mounted to the battery housing.

[0069] When pressure of interior of the battery pack is less than environment pressure, the explosion-proof venting valve 200 is in an intake mode, as shown in Fig. 5, air from outside environment will flow into the explosion-proof venting valve 200 via the radial gap between the outer surface of the valve cover mounting portion 95 of the valve body 9 and the inner surface of vertical wall of the valve cover 10, then flows through the membrane 98, the venting opening 76, the porous vertical support structure 72 and flows into the filter chamber 69 outside of the first filter assembly 110 and the second filter assembly 120. The air then flows through first filter assembly 110 (the first outer support frame 2, the first filter element 3, the first inner support frame 1) or the second filter assembly 120 (the second outer support frame 102, the second filter element 103, the second inner support frame 101) , and flows into the battery housing via a first inner space 13 of the first inner support frame 1 and the first filter opening 63, or via a second inner space 113 of the second inner support frame 101 and the second filter opening 64.

[0070] When pressure of interior of the battery pack is greater than environment pressure, the explosion-proof venting valve 200 is in a venting mode, as shown in Fig. 4. Gas inside of the battery pack flows out to the environment, specifically, the gas flows through the first filter opening 63 and the first inner space 13 of the first inner support frame 1, or through the second filter opening 64 and the second inner space 113 of the second inner support frame 101. Then, the gas flows through first filter assembly 110 (the first inner support frame 1, the first filter element 3, the first outer support frame 2) or the second filter assembly 120 (the second inner support frame 101, the second filter element 103, the second outer support frame 102) . In this regard, toxic gases, particulate matter and / or metal fragments can be reliably filtered out by the first filter element 3 or the second filter element 103, to generate filtered gas. The filtered gas then flows into the filter chamber 69 outside of the first filter assembly 110 and the second filter assembly 120, through the porous vertical support structure 72, the venting opening 76, the membrane 98, and then flows into outside environment via the radial gap between the outer surface of the valve cover mounting portion 95 of the valve body 9 and the inner surface of vertical wall of the valve cover 10.

[0071] When the battery pack experiences a thermal runaway event, the pressure difference between the interior of the battery pack and environment pressure will be greater than a predetermined threshold that can overcome force of the compression spring 71 of the valve assembly 7 to urge the valve cover 10 of the valve assembly 7 to move away from the valve body 9, and thus the explosion-proof venting valve 200 is in the blasting mode, so as to rapidly lower the pressure of interior of the battery pack.
