Abstract

The present disclosure provides methods and devices for managing PDU session limitations in a communication network, such as in scenarios involving Session and Service Continuity (SSC) Mode 3. One aspect of the disclosure enables a Session Management Function (SMF) to query and / or subscribe to events to be informed about whether a maximum number of PDU sessions for a User Equipment (UE) has been reached, allowing the SMF to trigger or delay new session establishments accordingly. A further aspect of the disclosure permits an Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) to exceptionally permit a new PDU session solely due to SSC Mode 3, even when the limit is reached. A UE can also release an existing PDU sessions if a PDU session establishment request with SSC Mode 3 is rejected due to limit is reached.

Description

COMMUNICATION METHODS, DEVICES AND SYSTEM FOR PDU SESSION MANAGEMENTTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present disclosure generally relates to the field of communications. For instance, the present disclosure provides devices, methods, and a system for PDU session management.BACKGROUND

[0002] In mobile communication networks, a Public Land Mobile Network (PLMN) can enforce a limit on the total number of Protocol Data Unit (PDU) sessions that a User Equipment (UE) can establish. This limit is determined by the Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) , and it is not pre-known to the UE.

[0003] When the UE attempts to establish a new PDU session but the AMF determines that the maximum number of allowed PDU sessions has been reached, the AMF rejects the request and provides the cause value #65, indicating "maximum number of PDU sessions reached. " Consequently, the UE is not able to establish the desired new PDU session.

[0004] Furthermore, if the maximum number of established PDU sessions is reached at the UE and the upper layers of the UE request connectivity to a Data Network Name (DNN) , the UE must refrain from sending a PDU SESSION ESTABLISHMENT REQUEST message unless an existing PDU session is released. This ensures that the system does not exceed the configured maximum number of PDU sessions, maintaining network stability and preventing service interruptions.SUMMARY

[0005] In some scenarios, a PDU session can be established with Session and Service Continuity (SSC) Mode 3. SSC Mode 3 is specifically designed to ensure make-before-break session continuity, where the new PDU session must be established before the release of the existing PDU session. This mechanism guarantees uninterrupted connectivity during the transition between sessions.

[0006] According to Section 5.6.9.2.3 of 3GPP Technical Specification TS 23.501, the network allows the establishment of UE connectivity via a new PDU Session Anchor to the same data network before disconnecting the previous PDU Session Anchor. This is essential when specific trigger conditions apply, as the network must decide whether to select a new User Plane Function (UPF) suitable for the UE’s new conditions, such as a change in the point of attachment to the network.

[0007] The Session Management Function (SMF) is responsible for triggering the establishment of a new PDU session. This is accomplished by sending a PDU Session Modification Command message to the UE. Upon receiving this message, the UE initiates the establishment of the new PDU session and provides two PDU session IDs: one corresponding to the new session and the other representing the previous session to be replaced. This information is conveyed at the mobility management (MM) NAS level and is visible to the AMF.

[0008] The make-before-break capability offered by SSC Mode 3 is crucial in maintaining seamless session continuity, as it prevents service disruptions when the UE is triggered to establish a new PDU session. By establishing the new session prior to releasing the existing one, the network maintains uninterrupted connectivity, thereby enhancing the user experience and providing robust support for dynamic mobility scenarios.

[0009] However, the enforcement of the maximum number of PDU sessions occurs at the Non-Access Stratum (NAS) mobility management layer. The SMF does not participate in or have information of this enforcement. A UE may have multiple PDU sessions managed by different SMFs, and each SMF does not have knowledge of the number of PDU sessions managed by other SMFs for the same UE. Therefore, the coordination between SMFs and AMF regarding session limits is crucial for efficient network management and uninterrupted service continuity.

[0010] In view of the above-mentioned problems and disadvantages, the present disclosure aims to improve PDU session management. For instance, an objective may be to provide a coordination between SMF and AMF regarding the PDU session limitations. A further objective may be to ensure uninterrupted service continuity in case of PDU session establishment (or re-establishment) with SSC Mode 3.

[0011] These and other objectives are achieved by this disclosure, for instance, as described in the independent claims. Advantageous implementations are further described in the dependent claims.

[0012] A first aspect of the present disclosure provides a method applied to an SMF entity. The method comprises sending a first message to an AMF entity. The first message is used to query whether a number of active PDU sessions associated with a terminal device (e.g., a UE) reaches a maximum limit or not. When receiving a second message from the AMF entity, the method comprises determining that the number of active PDU sessions reaches the maximum limit.

[0013] Optionally, the second message may be a first event notification, or a first flag signal. The first event notification or the first flag signal is indicative that the maximum limit is reached.

[0014] After receiving the second message indicating that the maximum limit is reached, the SMF entity may delay the triggering of the new PDU establishment (or re-establishment) , e.g., due to SSC Mode 3 and SMF relocation. The SMF entity may reattempt the triggering of the session establishment, e.g., based on a pre-configured retry interval. Before the reattempt, the SMF entity may send the first message again to query the status of the PDU session limitation.

[0015] In an implementation form of the first aspect, the method may comprise determining that the number of active PDU sessions is below the maximum limit, when receiving a third message from the AMF entity, or when not receiving a response from the AMF entity.

[0016] The third message may be a second event notification, or a second flag signal. The second event notification or the second flag signal is indicative that the maximum limit is not reached. Receiving the third message is optional, because it may be pre-set that if the maximum limit is not reached, the AMF may send nothing. In this case, when the SMF entity does not receive any response after sending the first message (e.g., a pre-set timeout after sending the first message) , the SMF may assume that the maximum limit is not reached, and can proceed to the new PDU session establishment.

[0017] In a further implementation form of the first aspect, the first message comprises an event subscription request. The event subscription request is used by the SMF entity to be notified by the AMF entity in an event that the number of active PDU sessions reaches the maximum limit or in an event that the number of active PDU sessions is below the maximum limit.

[0018] In this case, the second message comprises the first event notification indicating that the number of active PDU sessions reaches the maximum limit. The third message comprises the second event notification or a response to the first message that indicates the number of active PDU sessions is below the maximum limit.

[0019] When determining that the number of active PDU sessions is below the maximum limit, the method comprises sending, to the terminal device, a fourth message to trigger the terminal device to establish a new PDU session.

[0020] For instance, the fourth message may be a PDU Session Modification Command message that triggers the terminal device to establish a new PDU session request. Accordingly, the terminal device sends a PDU Session Establishment Request message, via the AMF, to the SMF.

[0021] In a further implementation form of the first aspect, the first message is sent when determining that a PDU session modification procedure is pending, wherein the PDU session modification procedure triggers or requests the terminal device to establish a new PDU session.

[0022] In a further implementation form of the first aspect, the first message comprises a request indicating that a new PDU session is desired for the terminal device. The second message indicates that no new PDU session is allowable for the terminal device. The method comprises re-sending the first message (or the request) after a pre-set time interval when receiving the second message.

[0023] Alternatively, if no response is received after sending the first message, the SMF entity assumes that the AMF entity has forwarded the first message to the terminal device, so as to trigger the terminal device to establish a new PDU session (as a PDU session modification procedure) . It is noted that in this case, the SMF entity may use a timer for the first message sent to the terminal device. If the SMF entity receives nothing from AMF, then SMF shall keep the timer running and assumes the first message is forwarded to the terminal device. The timer is kept running until the SMF entity gets something related to PDU session establishment back from the terminal device (e.g., the PDU session modification procedure is accepted or rejected by the UE) . It the timer expires and there is no explicit response from the terminal device regarding the PDU session modification procedure, the SMF entity considers the PDU session modification procedure fails. The SMF entity may retry later.

[0024] In a further implementation form of the first aspect, before sending the first message to the AMF entity, the method comprises receiving capability information of the AMF entity indicating that the AMF entity is capable of providing information about the number of active PDU sessions associated with the terminal device.

[0025] Optionally, the capability information may be received from the AMF entity, or any other entity, such as a Network function Repository Function (NRF) .

[0026] The AMF entity may indicate to the SMF entity this capability (i.e. if supported) during the establishment of a PDU session when the AMF entity selects an SMF entity and forwards the 5GSM message to the SMF. The AMF may indicate this capability during the PDU session establishment procedure. Alternatively, the AMF entity may provide this indication to the NRF entity.

[0027] In a further implementation form of the first aspect, the new PDU session is established with session and service continuity mode 3.

[0028] A second aspect of the present disclosure provides a method applied to an AMF entity. The method comprises receiving, from a terminal device, a first request for establishing a first PDU session for replacing a second PDU session that is already active. When determining that a number of active PDU sessions before accepting the first request already reaches the maximum limit and that the first request comprises information on the first PDU session and the second PDU session, the method comprises establishing the first PDU session for the terminal device; and releasing the second PDU session or requesting the SMF to release the second PDU session after the first PDU session is established.

[0029] It is noted that the AMF in the second aspect allows the first PDU session to be established as an exception. Since the AMF is aware, based on the first request, that the first PDU session is to replace the second PDU, and that the number of active PDU session will be within the maximum limit shortly.

[0030] In an implementation form of the second aspect, the method further comprises receiving a second request from the terminal device. The second request is for requesting a third PDU session to be established without replacing an active PDU session. When determining that the number of active PDU sessions exceeds the maximum limit if the first request and the second request are both accepted, the method comprises accepting the first request; and rejecting the second request.

[0031] A third aspect of the present disclosure provides a method applies to a terminal device. The terminal device is associated with a plurality of active PDU sessions. The method comprises the following steps: - receiving, from an SMF entity, a triggering message to initiate a first PDU session for replacing a second  PDU session, in which the second PDU is one of the plurality of active PDU sessions; - sending, to an AMF entity, an uplink NAS message for establishing the first PDU session for replacing the  second PDU session; - receiving, from the AMF entity, a first response message in response to the uplink NAS message, in which  the first response message indicates that the uplink NAS message is rejected due to a maximum limit of active PDU sessions being reached; - in response to receiving the first response message, releasing a third PDU session other than the second PDU  session from the plurality of active PDU sessions; - resending, to the AMF entity, the uplink NAS message for establishing the first PDU session for replacing  the second PDU session after the third PDU session is released; - receiving, from the AMF entity, a downlink NAS message in response to the resent uplink NAS message,  wherein the downlink NAS message indicates that the establishment of the first PDU session is accepted, or wherein the downlink NAS message contains a 5GSM message that is the PDU Session Establishment Accept message indicating an accepted establishment of the PDU session; - establishing the first PDU session in response to receiving the downlink NAS message; and - releasing the second PDU session after the first PDU session is established.

[0032] In an implementation form of the third aspect, the third PDU session is selected from the plurality of active PDU sessions according to one or more of: a priority of an associated network slice; a session priority; a quality of service, QoS, profile; and data traffic volume.

[0033] A fourth aspect of the present disclosure provides an SMF entity configured to perform the method of the first aspect or any implementation form thereof.

[0034] A fifth aspect of the present disclosure provides an AMF entity configured to perform the method of the second aspect or any implementation form thereof.

[0035] A sixth aspect of the present disclosure provides a terminal device configured to perform the method of the third aspect or any implementation form thereof.

[0048] A list of key terms and their acronyms / abbreviations used in the present disclosure is given as follows: 3rd Generation Partnership Project -3GPP; Access Management Function –AMF; Base Station –BS; Downlink –DL; gNodeB –gNB; Non-Access Stratum –NAS; Network Data Analytics Function –NWDAF; Network Function –NF; New Radio –NR; Network function Repository Function –NRF; Public Land Mobile Network –PLMN; Radio Resource Control –RRC; Session and Service Continuity –SSC; Session Management Function –SMF; Single Network Slice Selection Assistance Information –S-NSSAI; User Plane Function –UPF; Uplink –UL; User Equipment –UE.

[0049] FIG. 1 shows an SMF-centric solution according to the present disclosure. An SMF entity 110 is configured to send a first message 101 to an AMF entity 120. The first message 101 is used to query whether a number of active PDU sessions associated with a terminal device reaches a maximum limit or not.

[0050] If the number of active PDU sessions reaches the maximum limit, the AMF entity 120 is configured to send a second message 102 to the SMF entity 110. If the number of active PDU sessions is below the maximum limit, the AMF entity 120 may be configured to send a third message 103 to the SMF entity 110, or may be configured to send nothing in response to the first message 101.

[0051] The first message 101 may be an event subscription request, which is used by the SMF entity 110 to be notified by the AMF entity 120 in an event that the number of active PDU sessions reaches the maximum limit or the number of active PDU sessions is below the maximum limit. Alternatively, the first message 101 may comprises a request indicating that a new PDU session is desired for the terminal device. The new PDU session is to replace an existing PDU session with SSC mode 3. For instance, the new PDU session is to be established with SSC Mode 3.

[0052] The SMF-centric solution proposes that the SMF entity 110 shall seek to determine, in a proactive manner, whether a limit on the maximum number of PDU sessions has been reached for a UE or not. By doing so, the SMF entity 110 can determine whether to initiate a PDU session modification procedure in order to trigger the UE to establish a new PDU session (in the case that the limit has not been reached) , or delay the trigger towards the UE (in the case that the limit has been reached) .

[0053] FIG. 2 shows an example of an SMF-centric solution. This example is built based on the solution in FIG. 1.

[0054] In this example, the SMF entity 110 may use a new message, or an existing message, to subscribe to a new event. The new event is related to the status of the number of PDU sessions of a UE (whether it reaches the limit or not) .

[0055] Optionally, the SMF entity 110 may subscribe to this new event when the SMF entity has established a new PDU session for a UE where the PDU session is for SSC mode 3. The SMF entity 110 subscribes for this new event with the AMF entity 120.

[0056] Upon subscription for the new event, the AMF entity 120 monitors for the event as the UE establishes (or releases) PDU sessions. If the number of active PDU session reached the maximum allowable limit, the AMF entity 120 informs the SMF entity 110 that has subscribed to this event. If the limit is no longer reached, e.g. after one or more PDU sessions have been released for the UE, the AMF entity 120 may send a notification to the SMF entity 110 and indicates to the SMF entity 110 that the limit is no longer reached, i.e., the number of active PDU sessions is now below the permitted maximum limit.

[0057] The SMF entity 110 with a PDU session with SSC Mode 3 for the UE may need to perform a PDU session modification procedure in order to trigger the UE to establish a new PDU session for SSM mode 3. The SMF entity 110 that has subscribed to the new event shall behave as follows: - If the SMF entity needs to perform a PDU session modification in order to trigger the UE to establish a new  PDU session for SSC mode 3, and if the SMF entity is subscribed to the new event but does not receive an event notification that the maximum number of PDU sessions is reached for the UE (or has received an event notification that the limit on the PDU session for the UE is no longer reached) , then the SMF entity can go ahead and send the PDU Session Modification Command message to the UE; - If the SMF entity needs to perform a PDU session modification in order to trigger the UE to establish a new  PDU session for SSC mode 3, and if the SMF entity is subscribed to the new event and receives an event notification that the maximum number of PDU sessions is reached for the UE, then the SMF entity shall delay the procedure until it is notified that the limit is no longer reached.

[0058] FIG. 2 shows an exemplary signal flow demonstrating the above-mentioned solution. Initially, the UE may have a PDU session with SSC mode 3. The SSC mode 3 requires that if there is any PDU session modification, it should follow “make-before-break” rule to ensure session continuity.

[0059] In step 2, similar to FIG. 1, the SMF entity 110 is configured to send the first message 101 to the AMF entity 120. The first message 101 in the example of FIG. 2 comprises an event subscription request 201, which is used by the SMF entity 110 to be notified by the AMF entity 120 in an event that the number of active PDU sessions reaches the maximum limit or the number of active PDU sessions is below the maximum limit.

[0060] In step 3, the AMF entity 120 may confirm the subscription.

[0061] In step 4, the AMF entity 120 monitors the status of the number of active PDU sessions to check if it reached the maximum limit.

[0062] In step 5, the SMF entity 110 can assume that the number of active PDU sessions is below the limit, and can be configured to trigger UE to establish a new PDU session is needed.

[0063] In step 6, as an example, once the AMF entity 120 finds that the number of active PDU sessions reaches the maximum limit, the AMF entity 120 is configured to send a first event notification 202 (as an example of the second message 102) indicating that the number of active PDU sessions reaches the maximum limit. The SMF entity 110 may acknowledge the reception of the first event notification 202 in step 7.

[0064] In step 8, the SMF entity 110 does not trigger the UE to establish a new PDU session.

[0065] In step 9, the AMF entity 120 monitors the status of the number of active PDU sessions to check if it is below the maximum limit. In step 10, once the AMF entity 120 finds that the number of active PDU sessions is below the maximum limit, the AMF entity 120 is configured to send a second event notification 203 (as an example of the third message 103) indicating that the number of active PDU sessions is below the maximum limit. The SMF entity 110 may acknowledge the reception of the second event notification 203 in step 11.

[0066] In step 12, the SMF entity 110 can trigger the UE to establish a new PDU session if needed.

[0067] All events and notification may be acknowledged by the recipient. For example, when the SMF entity 110 subscribes to the new event with the AMF entity 120, the AMF entity 120 may acknowledge the request and may indicate whether it has been successful or not (and if not, then the reason) . If the AMF entity 120 notifies the SMF entity 110 of an event (e.g., related to whether or not the UE’s number of PDU session has reached the limit) , the SMF entity 110 may also acknowledge the receipt of the notification.

[0068] At any point, the SMF entity 110 may decide to unsubscribe from the event, e.g., during or after a PDU session, optionally with SSC mode 3, has been released for a UE. Alternatively, the AMF entity 120 may identify that a PDU session has been released, optionally for SSC mode 3. In this case, if the AMF entity 120 is aware of any events that are subscribed in relation to the PDU session that has been released, then the AMF entity 120 can locally delete the subscription and may inform the related SMF entity 110 about it.

[0069] It is noted that the signaling depicted in FIG. 2 is for illustration purposes only. The steps may be slightly modified.

[0070] FIG. 3 shows a further example of an SMF-centric solution. This example is built based on the solution in FIG. 1.

[0071] As illustrated in FIG. 3, the SMF entity 110 in this example is configured to probe the AMF entity 120 about the status of active PDU sessions of a UE before a PDU session modification is initiated.

[0072] When the SMF entity 110 needs to initiate a PDU session modification procedure in order to trigger the UE to initiate a new PDU session (due to SSC mode 3) , the SMF entity 110 shall verify with the AMF entity 120 the status on the number of active PDU sessions for the UE. If the AMF entity 120 indicates that the UE has already reached the limit, then the SMF entity 110 shall delay the triggering procedure until it is informed otherwise. For example, the SMF entity 110 can verify again with the AMF entity 120 at a later time as configured in the SMF entity 110 or optionally as indicated by the AMF entity 120, or based on operator policy. On the other hand, if the AMF entity 120 indicates that there is no PDU session limit for the UE (i.e., limit not reached) , then the SMF entity 110 can initiate the triggering procedure towards the UE, e.g., by sending a fourth message to the UE to trigger the PDU session establishment. The fourth message may be a PDU Session Modification Command message. Accordingly, the PDU session is established (or re-established) , e.g., due to SSC mode 3 and / or SMF relocation.

[0073] In this example, the first message 101 may be or comprise a request 301 indicating that a new PDU session is desired for the terminal device. The first message 101 may alternatively be a request to the AMF entity to indicate if the maximum number of PDU sessions is reached, and optionally comprise a subscription request to be notified when the limit is not reached if the limit is currently already reached. The second message 102 may indicate, e.g., through a first flag 302, that no new PDU session is allowable for the terminal device (limit reached) . The third message 103 may indicate, e.g., through a second flag 303, that a new PDU session is allowable for the terminal device (limit not reached) .

[0074] FIG. 4 shows a further example of an SMF-centric solution. This example is built based on the solution in FIG. 1.

[0075] In this example, the SMF entity 110 shall send the PDU Session Modification Command message 401 (as an example of the first message 101 or comprised in the first message 101) to a UE, via the AMF entity 120. The SMF entity 110 is configured to provide the configured to PDU Session Modification Command message 401 to the AMF entity 120. Based on the PDU Session Modification Command message 401, the SMF entity indicates to the AMF entity 120 that the PDU session modification procedure shall trigger the UE to establish a new PDU session. This indication is used by the AMF entity 120 to determine if this procedure can be allowed by verifying the number of active PDU sessions of the UE.

[0076] If the AMF entity 120 determines that the UE’s number of PDU sessions has not reached the maximum limit, then the AMF entity 120 allows the PDU Session Modification Command message 401 to go through to the UE. For instance, the AMF entity 120 is configured to forward the PDU Session Modification Command message 401 in a 5GSM message to the UE. The SMF entity 110 receives no response from the AMF entity 120 and can assume that the PDU Session Modification Command message 301 has been forwarded to the UE. It is noted that in this case, the SMF entity may use a timer for the PDU Session Modification Command message 401 sent to the UE. If the SMF entity 110 receives nothing from AMF entity 120, then the SMF entity 110 shall keep the timer running and assumes it is sent. The timer is kept running until the SMF entity gets a feedback related to PDU session establishment back from the UE (not shown in FIG. 4, but is similar to step 7 illustrated in FIG. 3) . The feedback may indicate that the PDU session modification is accepted or rejected by the UE. When the timer ultimately expires, it means that the PDU Session Modification Command message 401 is not forwarded by the AMF entity 120, or is forwarded but no response from the UE. The SMF entity consider that the PDU session modification procedure fails.

[0077] If the AMF entity 120 determines that the UE’s number of PDU sessions has reached the maximum limit, then the AMF entity 120 rejects the request from the SMF entity 110 and may send a rejection message 402 comprising a cause code to the SMF entity 110 to indicate that the UE’s maximum number of PDU session has been reached. This cause code may be an existing cause code, or a new cause code. The SMF entity 110 receives this rejection message 402 (corresponding to the second message 102 in FIG. 1) , and is configured to re-try after some time, e.g., based on local configuration or operator policy.

[0078] In this example, the SMF entity 110 may provide the indication through the first message 101 as follows: - The SMF entity 110 may include the SMF Reallocation requested indication IE when it send the first  message 101 to the AMF entity 120. Note that this IE is not always sent, but when the SMF entity 110 initiates the procedure for a PDU session for SSC mode 3 (for which a new PDU session establishment is desired) , then the SMF shall include this IE and set its value accordingly in the first message 101. - The SMF entity 110 may provide a new indication comprised in the first message 101 to inform the AMF  entity 120 that the PDU Session Modification Command message 401 to be forwarded to the UE shall trigger the establishment of a new PDU session.

[0079] Using any of the options listed above, the AMF entity 120 uses the received indication in order to determine if a new PDU session can be admitted. The AMF entity either allows the request or rejects it as described above.

[0080] In all the example of FIGs. 2 to 4, the AMF and SMF entities may exchange capability information. The capability information indicates the ability of the entity to take new actions or checks as has been presented for each example. For example, the AMF entity 120 may inform the SMF entity 110 if it is capable of receiving a new indication if a 5GSM message (e.g., PDU Session Modification Command message) will trigger a new PDU session establishment. As another example, the AMF entity 120 may indicate if it is capable of providing a new service wherein a network function, e.g. the SMF entity 110, can subscribe to know if a UE has reached the maximum number of allowed PDU sessions. The capability exchange may be direct between the AMF and SMF entities, or may be via another entity such as the NRF entity, where the other entity may be aware of the capability of the AMF and SMF entities and can share the capability information with the entities that ask for it.

[0081] FIG. 5 shows an AMF-centric solution according to the present disclosure. In general, an AMF entity is configured to make an exception to allow the new PDU establishment for SSC Mode 3 even when the limit of the active PDU sessions of a UE has reached. The AMF entity is configured to receive, from a terminal device, a first request for establishing a first PDU session for replacing a second PDU session that is already active. The first request comprises IDs of the first PDU session and of the second PDU session. When determining that the number of active PDU session before accepting the first request already reaches the maximum limit, the AMF entity still accepts the first request as an exception. Accordingly, the AMF entity is configured to establish the first PDU session, and release the second PDU session (or request the SMF entity to release the second PDU session) after the first PDU session is established.

[0082] As depicted in FIG. 5, a UE may request an establishment of a new PDU session for SSC mode 3, which is triggered by the SMF entity. Accordingly, the UE may send an UL NAS transport message, e.g., a 5GSM request message in step 501. Based on the presence of two PDU session identities in the UL NAS transport message, the AMF entity may determine that the UE’s request for a new PDU session is triggered by the SMF for SSC Mode 3 as in step 502. In this case, even when the UE’s limit in terms of the number of PDU sessions is already reached, the AMF entity shall make an exception to the limit and permit the new request given that the request is triggered due to SSC Mode 3 as in step 503. The AMF entity permits the request temporarily: after the new PDU session is established, the AMF and / or SMF shall trigger the release of the old PDU session that is replaced by the new PDU session, such that the UE’s limit goes back to the expected value.

[0083] Therefore, a core idea of this solution is that the AMF entity makes a temporary exception when a limit is reached and permit the UE to establish a new PDU session that is triggered by the SMF entity (e.g. due to SSC mode 3) . After the establishment of the new session, the network (e.g. the AMF entity and / or the SMF entity) can release the old PDU session so that the UE’s allowed limit is not exceeded. The AMF entity may determine which PDU session to permit, or which PDU session to make such an exception, by means of the presence of two PDU session identities in the UL NAS message.

[0084] Optionally, the AMF entity and / or the SMF entity may be configured to handle a race condition. The AMF may permit, or the SMF may decide to continue with, a NAS session management procedure (e.g. PDU session modification which triggers the establishment of a new PDU session by a UE) , when the UE sends two requests for new PDU session establishment. One of these requests may be for establishing a new PDU session for SSC mode 3 (as triggered by the SMF) , and the other request may be for another PDU session establishment where the second request is not necessarily related to SSC mode 3. When this occurs, the AMF entity may therefore receive two UL NAS messages. Each NAS message contains a NAS session management request for a new PDU session. In the case that UE shall exceed the permitted number of PDU sessions if both requests are granted: the AMF entity may be configured to prioritize the establishment of the PDU session due to SSC mode 3, if the total number of PDU sessions which would result from accepting all the requests would exceed the limit. In general, priority and preference should be given to the PDU session being established due to the trigger from the SMF for SSC Mode 3. The AMF can determine this PDU session request by means of the presence of two PDU session identities in the UL NAS message. The AMF can understand or determine that this request is related to new PDU session for SSC mode 3 (as triggered by the SMF) and hence can choose to prioritize the handling of the contained 5GSM message (for PDU session establishment) over another 5GSM message that is included in another UL NAS TRANSPORT message that does not have two PDU session identities (and hence is not related to new PDU session establishment as triggered by an SMF for SSC mode 3) .

[0085] FIG. 6 shows a further AMF-centric solution according to the present disclosure. To ensure that a UE 630 does not attempt to establish a new PDU session when the PDU session limit has been reached, this solution provides an AMF entity 620 configured to inform the UE 630 of the maximum number of PDU sessions that the UE can establish within a PLMN. The UE 630, upon receiving this information 601, is configured to store the maximum PDU session limit. The UE 630 is configured to use the stored limit to determine whether to initiate a new PDU session establishment, e.g., when receiving a trigger to establish a new PDU session from an SMF entity.

[0086] As an example, the AMF entity 620 may be configured to include the maximum number of allowed PDU sessions in a NAS message, such as a Registration Accept message. The maximum PDU session limit may be conveyed using an existing Information Element (IE) or through a newly defined IE. The UE 630 is configured to detect the corresponding IE and store the limit value in its local memory. The stored value is maintained during the registration period and may be updated if the AMF entity 620 transmits a new message with an updated limit.

[0087] The UE 630 can use the stored limit value to verify if a PDU session can be established when there is a pending request for a new session. The pending request may be from the SMF entity (or from the SMF entity and forwarded by the AMF entity) . If the UE 630 determines that the current number of established PDU sessions is less than the permitted limit, the UE 630 can allow a new PDU session to be established and hence can send necessary NAS messages 602 to request a new PDU session which may be pending. If the number of established PDU sessions is already at the maximum limit when a new PDU session request is pending, the UE shall refrain from sending the new request and may inform upper layers (e.g., an application) that the use of a new PDU session is currently not permitted. When the UE determines that the number of established PDU sessions is no longer at the maximum limit (e.g., due to the release of one or more PDU sessions) , then the UE 630 (knowing what the permitted maximum number of PDU sessions is) can initiate new PDU session establishments as needed.

[0088] For instance, when triggered to establish a new PDU session, e.g., due to SSC mode 3, the UE 630 can verify if the number of PDU sessions that it currently has is already at the maximum number or not. If the limit is not reached, then the UE 630 can establish the new session. If the maximum is already reached, then the UE 630 may either wait for one or more PDU sessions to be released by the network or release an existing PDU session by itself, and then establish a new PDU session. In the latter case, which session the UE determines to release is based on UE implementation.

[0089] This solution of informing the UE about the maximum number of PDU sessions can apply regardless of a session being with SSC Mode 3. The network can determine to do so for any reason that is not restricted by the UE having sessions with SSC Mode 3.

[0090] FIG. 7 shows a UE-centric solution according to the present disclosure. This solution provides a UE associated with a plurality of active / established PDU sessions. As depicted in FIG. 7, the UE is triggered to establish a new PDU session with SSC Mode 3. Specifically, the UE is configured to receive, from an SMF entity, a triggering message to initiate a first PDU session for replacing a second PDU session. The second PDU session is one of the plurality of established PDU sessions. The UE is then configured to send, to an AMF entity, an uplink NAS message for establishing the first PDU session for replacing the second PDU session with SSC Mode 3.

[0091] The UE is however configured to receive a first response message from the AMF entity in response to the uplink NAS message. The first response message indicates that the uplink NAS message is rejected due to a maximum limit of active PDU sessions being reached, e.g., indicated via cause value #65.

[0092] Upon receiving the first response message, the UE is configured to release a third PDU session other than the second PDU session from the plurality of established PDU sessions.

[0093] Then, the UE is configured to retry the first PDU session establishment. For instance, the UE is configured to resend the uplink NAS message. In this case, the UE is configured to receive a downlink NAS message indicating that the first PDU session establishment is accepted. Alternatively, the downlink NAS message may contain a 5GSM message that is a PDU Session Establishment Accept message indicating an accepted establishment of the PDU session. Accordingly, the UE is configured to establish the first PDU session, and then release the second PDU session.

[0094] In this solution, it is proposed that when the PDU session establishment with SSC Mode 3 is rejected due to maximum PDU number limit, the UE shall release a PDU session that is not associated with SSC mode 3.

[0095] The decision on which PDU session to release can be made based on various criteria, such as a priority of an associated network slice, a session priority, a QoS profile, and data traffic volume. For instance, one possible approach is to consider the priority of the session or the priority of the slices (S-NSSAI) associated with the plurality of established PDU sessions. For example, if a PDU session has a higher priority, it should not be released, while a session with a lower priority can be selected for release. As an alternative, the UE may choose to release a PDU session that has not been actively exchanging user data for a specified period of time or that has been identified as carrying best-effort traffic or traffic without guaranteed bit rate. The UE may also wait for an appropriate period of time for a session to become idle or significantly reduce user data exchange before selecting it for release. It is noted that the various criteria disclosed herein may also be applied to the solution introduced with respect to FIG. 6 where the UE can also release a PDU session by itself when the maximum limit is reached.

[0096] This solution provides a flexible and efficient approach to managing PDU session limitations while ensuring that SSC mode 3 continuity requirements are met. By enabling the UE to dynamically evaluate the session conditions and make appropriate decisions, the network can maintain optimal resource utilization and reduce unnecessary session attempts.

[0097] Overall, the present disclosure provides various solutions for managing PDU session limitations in a communication network, particularly in scenarios involving SSC Mode 3. The solutions with respect to FIGs. 1, 5, 6, and 7 are alternatives. The solutions with respect to FIGs. 2, 3, and 4 are examples built based on FIG. 1. Signals 101, 201, 301, 401 correspond to each other. Signals 102, 202, 302, 402 correspond to each other. Signals 103, 203, 303 correspond to each other.

[0098] The present disclosure enables the SMF entity, by means of new event subscriptions or new requests, to be aware of any limitation on the maximum number of PDU sessions imposed by the AMF entity for a given UE. Based on this information, the SMF entity can determine whether to trigger the establishment of a new PDU session or delay the session establishment until the limitation no longer exists.

[0099] The present disclosure in a further solution allows the AMF entity to make an exception when a new PDU session is being established solely due to SSC Mode 3. In such cases, the AMF entity may exceptionally permit the new PDU session establishment with SSC Mode 3 even the number of PDU sessions already reaches the limit. This enables seamless session continuity even when the maximum PDU session limit is reached. Alternatively, the AMF entity can proactively inform the UE of the maximum PDU session limit.

[0100] In a further solution, the present disclosure permits the UE to release an existing PDU session in case that a new PDU session request is rejected due to the maximum PDU session limit is reached. This ensures that the continuity provided by SSC Mode 3 is maintained while accommodating new session requests when required.

[0101] The present disclosure may be applied to any telecommunications networks / systems, such as but not limited to 5G (or 5G-Advanced) , 6G mobile networks and the like. FIG. 8 shows an example of a system. The system comprises an AMF entity, and one or more SMF entities. The AMF entity is associated with the one or more SMF entities. At least one of the AMF entity and the one or more SMF entities adopts a respective solution mentioned above with respect to FIGs. 1-6.The system may further comprise a base station, or gNodeB (gNB) , which is configured to provide cellular access to a UE.The gNB communicates with the AMF entity via an N2 interface. The AMF entity communicates with the one or more SMF entities via an N11 interface. The UE may also communicate with the AMF entity via an N1 interface.

[0102] The network entities (the AMF entity and the SMF entity) and terminal device in this disclosure each may comprise processing circuitry or a chipset (not shown) configured to respectively perform, conduct or initiate the various operations described herein. The processing circuitry may comprise hardware and software. The hardware may comprise analog circuitry or digital circuitry, or both analog and digital circuitry. The digital circuitry may comprise components such as application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) , field-programmable arrays (FPGAs) , digital signal processors (DSPs) , or multi-purpose processors. Optionally, the processing circuitry (or the chipset) comprises one or more processors and a non-transitory memory connected to the one or more processors. The non-transitory memory may carry executable program code which, when executed by the one or more processors, causes the devices to perform, conduct or initiate the operations or methods described herein.

[0103] The present invention has been described in conjunction with various embodiments as examples as well as implementations. However, other variations can be understood and effected by those persons skilled in the art and practicing the claimed invention, from the studies of the drawings, this disclosure and the independent claims. In the claims as well as in the description the word “comprising” does not exclude other elements or steps and the indefinite article “a” or “an” does not exclude a plurality. A single element or other unit may fulfill the functions of several entities or items recited in the claims. The mere fact that certain measures are recited in the mutual different dependent claims does not indicate that a combination of these measures cannot be used in an advantageous implementation.
