Description

REFERENCE SIGNAL MEASUREMENT IN SUB-BAND NON-OVERLAPPING FULL DUPLEX SYMBOLSTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] Various example embodiments described herein generally relate to communication technologies, and more particularly, to apparatuses, methods and computer readable media for reference signal (RS) measurement in sub-band non-overlapping full duplex (SBFD) symbols.BACKGROUND

[0002] Certain abbreviations that may be found in the description and / or in the figures are herewith defined as follows: CSI-RS           Channel State Information Reference Signal DMRS             Demodulation Reference Signal FDD              Frequency Division Duplex GB               Guard Band GP               Guard Period MO               Measurement Object OFDM             Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing PRB              Physical Resource Block PRS              Positioning Reference Signal PTRS             Phase Tracking Reference Signal RS               Reference Signal SBFD             Sub-Band non-overlapping Full Duplex SSB              Synchronization Signal Block TDD              Time Division Duplex

[0003] 5G New Radio (NR) supports two duplexing modes, i.e., frequency division duplex (FDD) for paired bands and time division duplex (TDD) for unpaired bands. Sub-band non-overlapping full duplex (SBFD) , also known as sub-band full duplex, is a new duplexing mode in unpaired spectrum where separate sets of resource blocks (RBs) within a TDD carrier are used for uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) transmissions simultaneously. The intension is to allow more UL transmission opportunities compared to the typical DL-heavy TDD configurations used in today’s TDD deployments where typically around 1 out of 5 slots are used for UL transmission. It brings benefits in terms of UL coverage, UL latency and network capacity especially in wide area macro networks where many UEs are in power-limited conditions in the UL direction.SUMMARY

[0040] Moreover, in connection of split radio access network (RAN) , the network device may refer to a centralized unit (CU) of a base station and / or a distributed unit (DU) of a base station. An interface between CU and DU may be referred to as an F1 interface in NR. In the split RAN architecture, node operations may be carried out, at least partly, in the central / centralized unit, CU, (e.g. server, host or node) operationally coupled to the DU, (e.g. a radio head / node) . One CU may control one or more DUs, acting at least as transmit / receive (Tx / Rx) nodes. In some embodiments, the DUs may comprise e.g. a radio link control (RLC) , medium access control (MAC) layer and a physical (PHY) layer, whereas the CU may comprise the layers above RLC layer, such as a packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) layer, a radio resource control (RRC) and an internet protocol (IP) layers. Other functional splits are possible too. In practice, any processing task may be performed in either the CU or the DU and the boundary where the responsibility is shifted between the CU and the DU may depend on the applied implementation.

[0041] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device that may be capable of wireless communication. By way of example, a terminal device may be referred to as a communication device, user equipment (UE) , a Subscriber Station (SS) , or a Mobile Station (MS) . The terminal device may include a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , portable computers, desktop computer, image capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and playback appliances, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, USB dongles, an Internet of Things (IoT) device, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and applications (e.g., remote surgery) , an industrial device and applications (e.g., a robot and / or other wireless devices operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a device operating on commercial and / or industrial wireless networks, and the like.

[0042] A term “resource” , as used herein, may refer to radio resources in time domain, in frequency domain, in space domain, and / or in code domain. Some examples of resources include e.g. a physical resource block (PRB) , a radio frame, a subframe, a time slot, a sub-band, a frequency region, a subcarrier, a beam, etc. The term “transmission” and / or “reception” may refer to wirelessly transmitting and / or receiving via a wireless propagation channel on radio resources.

[0043] Fig. 1 illustrates an example of a communication network to which example embodiments disclosed herein may be applied. The communication network or a cellular communication network may comprise a network node 120A providing one or more cells, such as cell 101A, and a network node 120B providing one or more other cells, such as cell 101B. Each cell may be, e.g., a macro cell, a micro cell, a femto cell, or a pico cell, for example. The cell may define a coverage area or a service area of the corresponding access node.

[0044] The network node 120A may provide a user equipment (UE) 110A (one or more UEs) with wireless access to the communication network. The wireless access may comprise downlink (DL) communication from the network node to the UE 110A and uplink (UL) communication from the UE 110A to the network node. Examples of uplink channels comprise physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) for transmitting control information and physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) for transmitting data towards the network. Examples of downlink channels comprise physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) for transmitting control information and physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) for transmitting data towards the user equipment.

[0045] There may be a plurality of UEs 110A, 110B in the communication network. Each of them may be served by the same or by different network nodes 120A, 120B. UE may be configured with dual connectivity (DC) , wherein the UE, e.g. UE 110A, may be connected to multiple network nodes 120A, 120B. The UEs 110A, 110B may communicate with each other, in case device-to-device (D2D) communication interface is established between them via a so-called sidelink (SL) . Such D2D communications may be referred to as machine-to-machine, peer-to-peer (P2P) communications, or vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) , for example.

[0046] In the case of multiple network nodes in the communication network, the network nodes may be connected to each other via an interface. LTE specifications call such an interface as X2 interface. An interface between an LTE node and a 5G node, or between two 5G nodes may be called Xn interface.

[0047] The network nodes 120A and 120B may be further connected via another interface to a core network 130 of the communication network. The LTE specifications specify the core network as an evolved packet core (EPC) , and the core network may comprise e.g. a mobility management entity (MME) and a gateway node. The MME may handle mobility of terminal devices in a tracking area encompassing a plurality of cells and handle signaling connections between the terminal devices and the core network. The gateway node may handle data routing in the core network and to / from the terminal devices. The 5G specifications specify the core network as a 5G core (5GC) . The 5G core may comprise e.g. an access and mobility management function (AMF) and a user plane function / gateway (UPF) and other functions. The AMF may handle termination of non-access stratum (NAS) signaling, NAS ciphering &integrity protection, registration management, connection management, mobility management, access authentication and authorization, security context management. The UPF node may support packet routing and forwarding, packet inspection and quality of service (QoS) handling, for example.

[0048] The network node may operate in a sub-band non-overlapping full duplex (SBFD) mode where a carrier is split into at least a downlink (DL) sub-band and an uplink (UL) sub-band for simultaneous transmission and reception. Figs. 2A and 2B illustrate some examples of frequency-time resource partition for the SBFD operation. Referring to Fig. 2A, the full carrier is used for DL transmission at the first three slots. Each slot corresponds to 14 OFDM symbols for normal cyclic prefix (CP) . Then the cell enters into the SBFD mode in the following four slots where the carrier is partitioned into two DL sub-bands and one UL sub-band. Each sub-band comprises one resource block (RB) or more consecutive RBs which are used for the same transmission direction (either UL or DL) . The network node can transmit in the two DL sub-bands and receive in the UL sub-band simultaneously, while UEs in the cell can receive in one or both of the two DL sub-bands or transmit in the UL sub-band, depending on the slot format applied to the UEs. In other words, the network node operates in the full duplex mode, while the UEs still operate in the half-duplex mode, during the SBFD slots. After the SBFD mode, the cell switches to a full UL mode where the carrier is used for UL transmission. SBFD slots (or symbols) refer to those slots (or symbols) where both UL and one or more DL sub-bands are simultaneously available, and non-SBFD slots (or symbols) refer to legacy unidirectional slots (or symbols) . A guard period (GP) may be inserted in the time domain in-between UL and DL slots for transmit-receive circuitry switching and interference mitigation. A guard band (GB) may be inserted in the frequency domain in-between the UL and DL sub-bands to mitigate self-interference due to simultaneous transmission and reception of the network node.

[0049] Referring to Fig. 2B, the carrier is split into one DL sub-band and one UL sub-band during the SBFD slots. The DL sub-band may have higher (as shown) or lower (not shown) frequency than the UL sub-band. Other aspects of the example shown in Fig. 2B may be similar to the example shown in Fig. 2A. It would be appreciated that the slot formats shown in Figs. 2A, 2B are given as examples, and the network node can define a different slot format for the SBFD operation. Both time and frequency locations of sub-bands for SBFD operation may be known to SBFD-aware UEs, while this information may not be available for legacy UEs. Thus the legacy UEs may behave in a similar manner as in today’s TDD system. SBFD-aware UEs and legacy UEs may coexist in a cell with SBFD operation at the network node side.

[0050] Reference signals such as channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) may be configured during the SBFD operation. It has been agreed that the network node will support one contiguous CSI-RS resource allocation during the SBFD operation with non-contiguous CSI-RS resources derived by excluding frequency resources outside DL usable PRBs. Fig. 3 illustrates an example of contiguous CSI-RS resource allocation for the SBFD operation. As shown in Fig. 3, the configured contiguous CSI-RS resources may span a DL sub-band #1, a UL sub-band and a DL sub-band #2. CSI-RS sequence mapping is applied to the configured CSI-RS resources that overlap with the DL sub-band #1 and the DL sub-band #2, and the configured CSI-RS resources in the UL sub-band and the guard bands (GBs) are assumed not to be present, i.e., “punctured” by the network node. The resources that overlap with the DL sub-band #1 and the DL sub-band #2 are referred to as actual resources. The actual resources will be measured by the UE and used to derive a measurement report.

[0051] In Layer 3 CSI-RS measurements, UE measures both a serving cell CSI-RS and a neighbor cell CSI-RS. The Layer 3 CSI-RS measurements (mobility measurements) requirements are defined for intra-frequency measurements and inter-frequency measurements. If the neighbor cell measurement is an intra-frequency measurement, it is assumed that the UE can perform the neighbor cell measurement while measuring the serving cell signals or receiving data if some conditions are satisfied. If the neighbor cell measurement is an inter-frequency measurement, it might be necessary to configure measurement gaps for the UE depending on the UE capabilities, so the UE is not available for serving cell measurements nor scheduling. In addition, the inter-frequency measurements usually have a longer measurement period to acquire more measurement samples than the intra-frequency measurements.

[0052] There are 4 scenarios considering the same CSI-RS configuration in the neighbor and serving cells: (1) The serving cell has the same SBFD configuration as the neighbor cell. (2) The serving cell has a different SBFD configuration than the neighbor cell, but the CSI- RS available resources on the serving cell are also available at the neighbor cell. This scenario is illustrated in Fig. 4A. (3) The serving cell has a different SBFD configuration than the neighbor cell, leading to  different CSI-RS available resources. This scenario is illustrated in Fig. 4B. (4) The serving cell is configured with SBFD, and the neighbor cell is not configured with  SBFD. This scenario is illustrated in Fig. 4C.

[0053] According to the existing intra-frequency definition, the CSI-RS based measurements in these scenarios are all considered as intra-frequency measurements as the configured CSI-RS resources in the neighbor cell have the same bandwidth and the same center frequency as the configured CSI-RS resources in the serving cell. However, when SBFD operation is considered, the CSI-RS resources may be punctured, which might lead to the different numbers of PRBs to be measured in the serving and neighbor cells. For example, in the scenario (1) (not shown) , the neighbor cell and the serving cell have the same SBFD configuration and the same CSI-RS configuration, which leads to the same CSI-RS resources after puncturing available in both the serving cell and the neighbor cell. In the scenario (2) shown in Fig. 4A, the neighbor cell and the serving cell have different SBFD configurations, which also leads to the same available resources, or in other words, the CSI-RS resources that are available in the serving cell are also available in the neighbor cell. In the scenario (3) shown in Fig. 4B where the neighbor cell and the serving cell have different SBFD configurations and the scenario (4) shown in Fig. 4C where the serving cell is configured with SBFD and the neighbor cell is not configured with SBFD, puncturing is carried out to different CSI-RS resources in the serving and neighbor cells, which leads to different available CSI-RS resources in the serving and neighbor cells. As the bandwidth and the center frequency of the CSI-RS resources after puncturing may not be the same any more in the serving and neighbor cells, it may not be proper to consider the CSI-RS measurement on the available resources after puncturing still as intra-frequency measurement.

[0054] This problem may also happen in legacy inter-frequency measurement. Fig. 4D illustrates an example of a legacy inter-frequency measurement where the serving cell and the neighbor cell have a different center frequency. However, the available CSI-RS resources after puncturing may be with the same bandwidth and the same center frequency. It is unclear if it shall be considered as intra-frequency or inter-frequency measurement when the SBFD operation is considered.

[0055] As the definition of CSI-RS intra-frequency measurement is not clear when the SBFD operation is considered, UE behavior is also not clear. UE does not know whether the requirements for the intra-frequency measurement or the requirements for the inter-frequency measurement shall be applied for the CSI-RS measurement. In addition, UE does not know how to determine CSI-RS resources to be measured in the neighbor cell. The problem also exists when other reference signals are configured in the SBFD symbols.

[0056] Example embodiments of the present disclosure provide a method for performing reference signal (RS) measurements in SBFD symbols in a serving cell and one or more neighbor cells. In some example embodiments, the network may provide information that could be used by UE to derive valid RS resources to be measured in the neighbor cell. The UE may further determine based on some conditions whether the RS measurement would be considered as intra-frequency or inter-frequency measurement. In some example embodiments, CSI-RS is described as an example of the reference signal, but it would be appreciated that the example embodiments described here are also applicable when other reference signals are configured in the SBFD symbols. Examples of the reference signals that may be configured in the SBFD symbols may include but are not limited to synchronization signal block (SSB) , demodulation reference signal (DMRS) , positioning reference signal (PRS) , phase tracking reference signal (PTRS) and the like.

[0057] Fig. 5 illustrates a process of performing reference signal (RS) measurements in SBFD symbols in a serving cell and one or more neighbor cells according to an example embodiment of the present disclosure. The process may be performed at a UE such as the UE 110 discussed above and a network (NW) node serving the UE such as the network node 120 discussed above.

[0058] Referring to Fig. 5, the UE 110 may receive an SBFD configuration of a serving cell from the network node 120 at 510. The SBFD configuration may configure frequency and / or time resources for SBFD operations, including for example PRBs for UL and / or DL sub-bands in the frequency domain, and / or SBFD symbols or slots in the time domain.

[0059] At 512, the UE 110 may receive a reference signal (RS) configuration of the serving cell from the network node 120. The RS configuration may configure frequency and / or time resources for the reference signal. In an example, the RS configuration may configure the frequency resources for the reference signal, while the time resources for the reference signal may be pre-configured / predefined at the UE 110, or vice versa. In an example, a contiguous frequency resource allocation may be configured for the reference signal, including a start PRB and an end PRB or the number of PRBs usable for the reference signal. The contiguous RS frequency resource allocation may be configured for both SBFD and non-SBFD symbols. In the SBFD symbols, the contiguous RS frequency resource allocation may overlap with the DL and UL sub-bands.

[0060] Based on the SBFD configuration and the RS configuration, the UE 110 may determine valid resources for measurement of the reference signal in the serving cell at 514. In the present disclosure, the valid RS resources refer to a portion (s) of the configured RS resources that the RS sequence is mapped to and is measured at the UE 110 to derive a measurement report. In an example, in the non-SBFD symbols, the UE 110 may determine the configured RS resources as the valid resources for the RS measurement. In the SBFD symbols, the UE 110 may consider PRBs of the configured RS resources that overlap with the SBFD DL sub-band (s) as the valid resources for the RS measurement. The PRBs of the configured RS resources that overlap the SBFD UL sub-band and the guard band (s) may be punctured / ignored. For example, referring to Figs. 4A-4D, the available resources of the configured RS resources after puncturing may be determined as the valid resources for the RS measurement in the serving cell. The UE 110 may measure the reference signal on the determined valid resources in the serving cell.

[0061] At 516, the UE 110 may receive an SBFD configuration of one or more neighbor cells from the network node 120. For the simplicity of description, one neighbor cell will be discussed below, and operations related to the one neighbor cell are also applicable to other neighbor cells. The network node 120 may obtain the SBFD configuration of the neighbor cell from another network node that supports the neighbor cell via an Xn message and transmit the SBFD configuration of the neighbor cell to the UE 110. Like the SBFD configuration of the serving cell, the SBFD configuration of the neighbor cell may configure frequency and / or time resources for SBFD operations in the neighbor cell, including for example PRBs for UL and / or DL sub-bands in the frequency domain, and / or SBFD symbols or slots in the time domain.

[0062] At 518, the UE 110 may receive an RS configuration of the neighbor cell from the network node 120. Like the RS configuration of the serving cell, the RS configuration of the neighbor cell may configure frequency and / or time resources for the reference signal in the neighbor cell. In the example embodiments, it is assumed that the RS resources configured in the neighbor and serving cells for the same measurement object (MO) have the same periodicity.

[0063] Based on at least the SBFD configuration and the RS configuration of the neighbor cell, the UE 110 may determine valid resources for measurement of the reference signal in the neighbor cell at 520. In an example, in the non-SBFD symbols, the UE 110 may determine the configured RS resources as the valid resources for the RS measurement in the neighbor cell. For example, in the scenario shown in Fig. 4C, the configured RS resources may be used as the valid resources for the RS measurement in the neighbor cell. If the configured RS occasions overlap with the SBFD symbols, the UE 110 may first determine available RS resources based on the configured RS resources and the SBFD configuration. The RS occasions refer to RS resources transmission occasions in the time domain, such as RS symbols. For instance, the UE 110 may determine PRBs of the configured RS resources that overlap with the SBFD DL sub-band (s) , i.e. remaining PRBs obtained by puncturing PRBs of the configured RS resources that overlap with the SBFD UL sub-band and the guard band (s) , as the available resources. Figs. 4A, 4B and 4D show some examples of the available RS resources determined by applying puncturing to the configured RS resources in the neighbor cell.

[0064] Then the UE 110 may check whether the UL sub-band of the neighbor cell overlaps at least partly in the frequency domain with the UL sub-band of the serving cell. If the UL sub-band of the neighbor cell overlaps in the frequency domain with the UL sub-band of the serving cell, in an example, the UE 110 may determine common resources in the available RS resources of the neighbor cell and the valid RS resources of the serving cell as the valid RS resources in the neighbor cell. Fig. 4A shows an example of the common resources in the available RS resources of the neighbor cell and the valid RS resources of the serving cell. Selecting the common resources for the RS measurement in the neighbor cell can ensure that the RS measurements from different cells are comparable with each other. In another example, the UE 110 may determine the available RS resources, i.e., the PRBs of the configured RS resources that overlap with the DL sub-band (s) , as the valid resources for the RS measurement in the neighbor cell.

[0065] In an example, if the UL sub-band of the neighbor cell does not overlap (i.e., is separate from) in the frequency domain with the UL sub-band of the serving cell, the UE 110 may determine the available RS resources, i.e., the PRBs of the configured RS resources that overlap with the DL sub-band (s) , as the valid resources for the RS measurement in the neighbor cell. Figs. 4B and 4D show the example scenarios where the UL sub-band of the neighbor cell does not overlap in the frequency domain with the UL sub-band of the serving cell. In such scenarios, the UE 110 may determine the available RS resources, i.e., the configured RS resources after puncturing, as the valid resources for the RS measurement in the neighbor cell.

[0066] Referring to Fig. 5, the UE 110 may, at 522, classify the RS measurement in the neighbor cell as intra-frequency measurement or inter-frequency measurement based on the valid RS resources in the serving cell and the valid RS resources in the neighbor cell. In an example, if the valid RS resources of the serving cell are contained in the frequency domain in the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurement in the neighbor cell as the intra-frequency measurement. If at least a part of the valid RS resources of the serving cell is outside the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell in the frequency domain, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurement in the neighbor cell as the inter-frequency measurement. For example, in the scenario shown in Fig. 4B, the RS measurement in the neighbor cell may be classified as the inter-frequency measurement. In the scenarios shown in Figs. 4A, 4C and 4D, the RS measurement in the neighbor cell may be classified as the intra-frequency measurement.

[0067] In another example, if the valid RS resources of the serving cell and the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell have the same bandwidth, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurement in the neighbor cell as the intra-frequency measurement. If the valid RS resources of the serving cell and the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell have a different bandwidth, no matter which one is larger, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurement in the neighbor cell as the inter-frequency measurement. For example, in the scenarios shown in Figs. 4A and 4D, the valid (common) RS resources of the neighbor cell have the same bandwidth as the valid RS resources of the serving cell, and the RS measurement in the neighbor cell may be classified as the intra-frequency measurement. In the scenarios shown in Figs. 4B and 4C, the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell have a different bandwidth than the valid RS resources of the serving cell, and the RS measurement in the neighbor cell may be classified as the inter-frequency measurement.

[0068] Alternatively or additionally, the UE 110 may consider the center frequency of the RS measurement to classify the RS measurement as intra-frequency or inter-frequency measurement. The center frequency of the RS measurement may be calculated as an average frequency of the start PRB and the end PRB of the valid RS resources that are actually measured at the UE 110. In an example, if the valid RS resources span two DL sub-bands in the SBFD symbols, the UE 110 may use the center frequency of the configured RS resources as the center frequency of the RS measurement. If the valid RS resources are in one DL sub-band, the UE 110 may determine the center frequency of the remaining resources after applying puncturing to the configured RS resources, i.e., the center frequency of the valid RS resources, as the center frequency of the RS measurement.

[0069] In some examples, the UE 110 may indicate e.g. in UE capability to the network node 120 whether the center frequency of the RS measurement is to be changed due to puncturing of the configured RS resources. If the UE 110 indicates the UE capability to the network node 120, the UE 110 may use the center frequency of the remaining resources after applying puncturing to the configured RS resources, i.e., the center frequency of the valid RS resources, as the center frequency of the RS measurement. If the UE 110 does not indicate the UE capability to the network node 120, the UE 110 may use the center frequency of the configured RS resources as the center frequency of the RS measurement. The network node 120 may predict UE behavior according to the UE capability. In an example, if the UE 110 indicates in the UE capability that the center frequency of the RS measurement is to be changed due to puncturing, the network node 120 may predict that the UE 110 will perform inter-frequency measurements and may configure measurement gaps for the UE 110 to perform the inter-frequency measurements.

[0070] In some examples, if the center frequency of the RS measurement in the neighbor cell is equal to the center frequency of the RS measurement in the serving cell, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurement in the neighbor cell as the intra-frequency measurement. If the center frequency of the RS measurement in the neighbor cell is different from the center frequency of the RS measurement in the serving cell, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurement in the neighbor cell as the inter-frequency measurement.

[0071] In some examples, the UE 110 may consider the valid RS resources, the bandwidth and the center frequency in any combination to classify the RS measurement in the neighbor cell. For example, if the valid RS resources of the serving cell are contained in the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell, and the RS measurement in the neighbor cell has the same center frequency as the RS measurement in the serving cell, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurement in the neighbor cell as the intra-frequency measurement. If at least a part of the valid RS resources of the serving cell is not contained in the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell, or the RS measurement of the neighbor cell has a different center frequency than the RS measurement of the serving cell, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurement in the neighbor cell as the inter-frequency measurement. In another example, if the RS measurement of the neighbor cell has the same bandwidth and center frequency as the RS measurement of the serving cell, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurement in the neighbor cell as the intra-frequency measurement. If the RS measurement of the neighbor cell has a different bandwidth or center frequency than the RS measurement of the serving cell, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurement in the neighbor cell as the inter-frequency measurement.

[0072] It is worth noting that, in addition to the valid RS resources, the bandwidth and the center frequency discussed above, the UE 110 may also consider other factors such as sub-carrier spacing (SCS) and cyclic prefix (CP) type to classify the RS measurement in the neighbor cell. The SCS and CP type may be considered in combination with any of the valid RS resources, the bandwidth and the center frequency to classify the RS measurement of the neighbor cell as intra-frequency measurement or inter-frequency measurement. For example, if the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell have the same SCS and CP type as the valid RS resources of the serving cell, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurement in the neighbor cell as the intra-frequency measurement. If the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell have a different SCS or CP type than the valid RS resources of the serving cell, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurement in the neighbor cell as the inter-frequency measurement.

[0073] Referring still to Fig. 5, at 524, the UE 110 may perform the RS measurement on the valid resources according to the classification. If the RS measurement is classified as the intra-frequency measurement, the UE 110 may apply requirements for the intra-frequency measurement to the RS measurement in the neighbor cell. If the RS measurement is classified as the inter-frequency measurement, the UE 110 may apply the requirements for the inter-frequency measurement to the RS measurement in the neighbor cell. For example, the UE 110 may perform the inter-frequency RS measurement with a longer period to acquire more measurement samples than the intra-frequency RS measurement. In addition, if the neighbor cell measurement is classified as the intra-frequency measurement, the UE 110 may perform the RS measurement while receiving signals in the serving cell. If the neighbor cell measurement is classified as the inter-frequency measurement, the UE 110 may perform the RS measurement during measurement gaps and it cannot receive signals in the serving cell at the same time.

[0074] Optionally, the UE 110 may transmit a measurement report comprising measurement results to the network node 120 at 526. For example, if channel state information reference signals (CSI-RSs) are measured, the UE 110 may determine channel state information (CSI) from the CSI-RS measurements and periodically transmit a measurement report comprising the CSI to the network node 120. If synchronization signal blocks (SSBs) are measured, the UE 110 may transmit a measurement report to the network node 120 when a predefined condition / event is satisfied / triggered. If positioning reference signals (PRS) are measured, the UE 110 may derive position coordinates from the PRS measurements and report the position coordinates to the network, e.g., to a location management function (LMF) . In an example, depending on the measurement type, i.e., intra-frequency or inter-frequency, different events or periodicities may be predefined for the measurement reporting. In an example, the UE 110 may indicate in the measurement report that the measurement results are obtained from the intra-frequency measurements or the inter-frequency measurements. The network node 120 can identify from the received measurement report that the measurement was performed as the intra-frequency measurement or the inter-frequency measurement at the UE 110.

[0075] In the process discussed above with respect to Fig. 5, the network node sends the SBFD configuration of the neighbor cell to the UE so that the UE can determine the valid resources for the RS measurement in the neighbor cell. In some other example embodiments, the network node may not send the SBFD configuration of the neighbor cell to the UE, which will be described below.

[0076] Fig. 6 illustrates a process of performing reference signal (RS) measurements in SBFD symbols in a serving cell and a neighbor cell according to an example embodiment of the present disclosure. The process may be performed at a UE such as the UE 110 discussed above and a network (NW) node serving the UE such as the network node 120 discussed above.

[0077] Referring to Fig. 6, the UE 110 may receive a SBFD configuration of a serving cell from the network node 120 at 610, receive a reference signal (RS) configuration of the serving cell from the network node 120 at 612, and determine valid resources for the RS measurement in the serving cell at 614. The operations 610, 612 and 614 performed at the UE 110 and the network node 120 may be similar to the operations 510, 512 and 514 discussed above with reference to Fig. 5, and a repetitive description thereof is omitted here for convenience. The UE 110 may measure the reference signal on the determined valid resources in the serving cell.

[0078] At 616, the UE 110 may receive an RS configuration of a neighbor cell from the network node 120. The RS configuration of the neighbor cell may configure frequency and / or time resources for the reference signal in the neighbor cell. In an example, a contiguous frequency resource allocation may be configured for the reference signal, including a start PRB and an end PRB or the number of PRBs usable for the reference signal. It is assumed that the RS resources configured in the neighbor and serving cells for the same measurement object (MO) have the same periodicity.

[0079] In some example embodiments, the RS configuration may further comprise information about valid resources for RS measurement in the neighbor cell. Based on the information, the UE 110 may determine the valid RS resources to be measured in the neighbor cell. In an example, the information about the valid RS resources may indicate that the neighbor cell is an intra-frequency cell, or that the neighbor cell has the same valid RS resources as the serving cell. The UE 110 may determine from the indication that for the same measurement object, the same valid RS resources are available in the neighbor cell and the serving cell. Therefore, the UE 110 can determine the valid RS resources available in the neighbor cell based on the valid RS resources in the serving cell for the same measurement object. In another example, the information about the valid RS resources may indicate the puncturing to be applied to the configured RS resources in the neighbor cell. For instance, the information about the valid RS resources may indicate the PRBs to be punctured / removed from the configured RS resources. In yet another example, the information about the valid RS resources may indicate that the same puncturing is to be applied to the configured RS resources in the neighbor and serving cells. Based on the indication, the UE 110 may apply the puncturing to the configured RS resources to determine the valid RS resources to be measured in the neighbor cell.

[0080] In some other example embodiments, the RS configuration may not comprise the information about valid resources for RS measurement in the neighbor cell. For instance, the UE 110 may receive an RS configuration indicating configured RS resources for the neighbor cell from the network node 120. As the network node 120 does not indicate whether the neighbor cell is an intra-frequency cell and the puncturing to be applied to the configured RS resources, the UE 110 may perform the RS measurement on the configured RS resources in the neighbor cell.

[0081] At 618, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurement in the neighbor cell as intra-frequency measurement or inter-frequency measurement based on at least the RS configuration of the neighbor cell. In an example, if the RS configuration includes the information about valid resources for RS measurement in the neighbor cell, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurement in the neighbor cell according to the information. For example, if the information indicates that the neighbor cell is an intra-frequency, that the neighbor cell has the same valid RS resources as the serving cell, or that the same puncturing is applied to the configured RS resources in the neighbor cell and the serving cell, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurement in the neighbor cell as the intra-frequency measurement. Otherwise, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurement in the neighbor cell as the inter-frequency measurement. As another example, if the information about the valid RS resources in the neighbor cell indicates the puncturing to be applied to the configured RS resources of the neighbor cell and the valid RS resources obtained by applying the puncturing to the configured RS resources are the same as the valid RS resources of the serving cell, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurement in the neighbor cell as the intra-frequency measurement. Otherwise, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurement in the neighbor cell as the inter-frequency measurement.

[0082] In another example, if the RS configuration does not include the information about valid resources for RS measurement in the neighbor cell, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurement of the neighbor cell based on the RS configuration. For example, if the configured RS resources of the neighbor cell fully overlap in the frequency domain the valid RS resources of the serving cell, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurement in the neighbor cell as the intra-frequency measurement. If at least a part of the valid RS resources of the serving cell is outside the configured RS resources of the neighbor cell, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurement in the neighbor cell as the inter-frequency measurement.

[0083] Referring still to Fig. 6, the UE 110 may perform the RS measurement in the neighbor cell based on the classification at 620.

[0084] If the RS configuration of the neighbor cell comprises the information about the valid RS resources, the UE 110 may determine the valid RS resources based on the information and the RS configuration and perform the RS measurement on the valid RS resources. If the RS configuration of the neighbor cell does not comprise the information about the valid RS resources, the UE 110 may determine the configured RS resources based on the RS configuration and perform the RS measurement on the configured RS resources. In the serving cell, the UE 110 will apply puncturing based on the SBFD configuration to the configured RS resources to determine the valid RS resources and perform the RS measurement on the valid RS resources.

[0085] Optionally, the UE 110 may transmit a measurement report comprising measurement results to the network node 120 at 622.

[0086] Fig. 7 illustrates a method for reference signal (RS) measurement according to an example embodiment of the present disclosure. The method may be implemented at a user equipment (UE) such as the UE 110 discussed above.

[0087] Referring to Fig. 7, the method may comprise receiving a SBFD configuration of a serving cell at 710, receiving a RS configuration of the serving cell at 720, and determining valid RS resources for RS measurements in the serving cell based on the SBFD configuration and the RS configuration at 730. For example, the UE 110 may receive the SBFD configuration and the RS configuration from a network node serving the UE 110. The SBFD configuration may configure frequency and / or time resources for UL and DL sub-bands for SBFD operations, the RS configuration may configure frequency and / or time resources for a reference signal. The UE 110 may apply puncturing to the configured RS resources based on the SBFD configuration to determine valid RS resources. For instance, resource blocks (RBs) of the configured RS resources that overlap with the DL sub-band (s) in the SBFD symbols may be determined as the valid RS resources, and RBs of the configured RS resources that overlap with the UL sub-band and guard band (s) in the SBFD symbols may be punctured / ignored.

[0088] The method may further comprise receiving a SBFD configuration of a neighbor cell at 740, receiving a RS configuration of the neighbor cell at 750, and determining valid RS resources for RS measurements in the neighbor cell based at least in part on the SBFD configuration and the RS configuration at 760. For example, the UE 110 may receive the SBFD configuration and the RS configuration from the network node serving the UE 110. Similar to the SBFD configuration and the RS configuration of the serving cell, the SBFD configuration of the neighbor cell may configure frequency and / or time resources for UL and DL sub-bands for SBFD operations in the neighbor cell, the RS configuration of the neighbor cell may configure frequency and / or time resources for a reference signal in the neighbor cell. For the configured RS occasions overlapping in the time domain with the SBFD symbols, the UE 110 may apply puncturing to the configured RS resources based on the SBFD configuration to determine available RS resources. For instance, resource blocks (RBs) of the configured RS resources that overlap with the DL sub-band (s) in the SBFD symbols may be identified as the available RS resources, and RBs of the configured RS resources that overlap with the UL sub-band and guard band (s) in the SBFD symbols may be punctured / ignored. The UE 110 may determine valid RS resources for the RS measurements in the neighbor cell from the available RS resources. In an example, if the UL sub-band of the neighbor cell overlaps at least in part in the frequency domain with the UL sub-band of the serving cell, the UE 110 may identify common resources in the available RS resources of the neighbor cell and the valid RS resources of the serving cell as the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell. If the UL sub-band of the neighbor cell separates in the frequency domain from the UL sub-band of the serving cell, the UE 110 may consider the available RS resources as the valid RS resources for the RS measurement in the neighbor cell. In another example, if the UL sub-band of the neighbor cell overlaps at least in part in the frequency domain with the UL sub-band of the serving cell, the UE 110 may also consider the available RS resources as the valid RS resources for the RS measurement in the neighbor cell.

[0089] The method may further comprise classifying the RS measurements in the neighbor cell as intra-frequency measurements or inter-frequency measurements based on at least the valid RS resources in the serving cell and the valid RS resources in the neighbor cell at 770, and performing the RS measurements in the neighboring cell as the intra-frequency measurements or the inter-frequency measurements based on the classification at 780.

[0090] In an example, if the valid RS resources of the serving cell are contained in the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurements in the neighbor cell as the intra-frequency measurements. If at least a part of the valid RS resources of the serving cell is outside the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurements in the neighbor cell as the inter-frequency measurements.

[0091] In an example, if the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell have a bandwidth equal to that of the valid RS resources of the serving cell, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurements in the neighbor cell as the intra-frequency measurements. If the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell have a bandwidth different than that of the valid RS resources of the serving cell, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurements in the neighbor cell as the inter-frequency measurements.

[0092] In an example, if the valid RS resources of the serving cell are contained in the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell, and the RS measurements in the neighbor cell have a center frequency identical to that of the RS measurements in the serving cell, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurements in the neighbor cell as the intra-frequency measurements. If the valid RS resources of the serving cell are at least in part outside the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell, or the RS measurements in the neighbor cell have a center frequency different than that of the RS measurements in the serving cell, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurements in the neighbor cell as the inter-frequency measurements.

[0093] In an example, if the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell have a bandwidth equal to that of the valid RS resources of the serving cell, and the RS measurements in the neighbor cell have a center frequency identical to that of the RS measurements in the serving cell, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurements in the neighbor cell as the intra-frequency measurements. If the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell have a bandwidth different than that of the valid RS resources of the serving cell, or the RS measurements in the neighbor cell have a center frequency different than that of the RS measurements in the serving cell, the UE 110 may classify the RS measurements in the neighbor cell as the inter-frequency measurements.

[0094] The center frequency of the RS measurements in the neighbor cell and the serving cell may be determined as a center frequency of the valid RS resources for the RS measurements or a center frequency of the configured RS resources. In an example, if the UE 110 indicates e.g., in UE capability a center frequency change due to puncturing to the network, the UE 110 may determine the center frequency of the valid RS resources as the center frequency of the RS measurements in the neighbor cell and the serving cell. If the UE 110 does not indicate the center frequency change due to puncturing to the network, the UE 110 may determine the center frequency of the configured RS resources as the center frequency of the RS measurements in the neighbor cell and the serving cell.

[0095] The UE 110 may perform the RS measurements on the valid RS resources in the neighbor cell. Depending on the classification, the UE 110 may apply intra-frequency measurement requirements or inter-frequency measurement requirements to the RS measurements in the neighbor cell.

[0096] In an example, the method may further comprise transmitting (not shown) a measurement report containing measurement results obtained from the RS measurements in the neighbor cell. For example, the UE 110 may transmit the measurement report containing the RS measurement results in the neighbor cell on an event or periodic basis to the network node serving the UE 110. The network node can identify from the measurement report that the measurement is performed as the intra-frequency measurement or the inter-frequency measurement at the UE 110.

[0097] Fig. 8 illustrates a method for reference signal (RS) measurement according to an example embodiment of the present disclosure. The method may be implemented at a user equipment (UE) such as the UE 110 discussed above.

[0098] Referring to Fig. 8, the method may comprise receiving a RS configuration of a neighbor cell comprise information about valid resources for RS measurements in the neighbor cell at 810, classifying the RS measurement in the neighbor cell as intra-frequency measurement or inter-frequency measurement based at least in part on the RS configuration of the neighbor cell at 820, and performing the RS measurement in the neighboring cell at 830.

[0099] In an example, the information about the valid RS resources in the neighbor cell may comprise at least one of an indication that the neighbor cell is an intra-frequency cell, an indication that the neighbor cell has same valid RS resources as a serving cell, an indication of puncturing to be applied to configured RS of the neighbor cell, or an indication to apply same puncturing to configured RS resources in the serving cell and the neighbor cell.

[0100] In an example, if the information about the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell indicates that the neighbor cell is an intra-frequency cell or that the neighbor cell has the same valid RS resources as the serving cell, or the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell obtained by applying puncturing to the configured RS resources based on the information about the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell are the same as the valid RS resources of the serving cell, the RS measurement in the neighbor cell may be classified as the intra-frequency measurement. If the information about the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell does not indicate that the neighbor cell is an intra-frequency cell or that the neighbor cell has the same valid RS resources as the serving cell, and the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell obtained by applying puncturing to the configured RS resources based on the information about the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell are different from the valid RS resources of the serving cell, the RS measurement in the neighbor cell may be classified as the inter-frequency measurement.

[0101] The measurement of the reference signal in the neighboring cell may be performed based on the classification. For example, based on the classification, intra-frequency or inter-frequency measurement requirements may be applied for the RS measurements in the neighbor cell. The neighbor cell RS measurements may be performed on the valid RS resources determined based at least partly on the information about the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell. In an example, the method may further comprise receiving a SBFD configuration of the serving cell. The information about the valid RS resources of the neighbor cell may indicate that the same puncturing may be applied to the configured RS resources in the neighbor and serving cells. Then puncturing may be applied based on the SBFD configuration of the serving cell to the configured RS resources of the neighbor cell to determine the valid RS resources in the neighbor cell.

[0102] In an example, the method may further comprise transmitting (not shown) a measurement report containing measurement results obtained from the RS measurements in the neighbor cell. For example, the measurement report containing the RS measurement results in the neighbor cell may be transmitted on an event or periodic basis to the network. In an example, depending on the measurement type, i.e., intra-frequency or inter-frequency, different events or periodicities may be predefined for the measurement reporting. In an example, the measurement report may indicate that the measurement results are obtained from the intra-frequency measurements or the inter-frequency measurements. The network node can identify from the measurement report that the measurement is performed as the intra-frequency measurement or the inter-frequency measurement.

[0103] Fig. 9 illustrates a method for reference signal (RS) measurement according to an example embodiment of the present disclosure. The method may be implemented at a user equipment (UE) such as the UE 110 discussed above.

[0104] Referring to Fig. 9, the method may comprise receiving a SBFD configuration of a serving cell at 910, receiving a RS configuration of the serving cell at 920, and determining valid RS resources for RS measurements in the serving cell based on the SBFD configuration and the RS configuration at 930.

[0105] The method may further comprise receiving a RS configuration of a neighbor cell at 940, and classifying RS measurements in the neighbor cell as intra-frequency measurements or inter-frequency measurements based on at least the RS configuration of the neighbor cell at 950. The RS configuration may configure RS resources for the neighbor cell. In an example, if the configured RS resources of the neighbor cell fully overlap the valid RS resources in the serving cell, the RS measurements in the neighbor cell may be classified as intra-frequency measurements. If the valid RS resources in the serving cell is at least partly outside the configured RS resources of the neighbor cell, the RS measurements in the neighbor cell may be classified as inter-frequency measurements.

[0106] At 960, the measurement of the reference signal in the neighboring cell may be performed on the configured RS resources based on the classification. For example, based on the classification, intra-frequency or inter-frequency measurement requirements may be applied for the RS measurements in the neighbor cell.

[0107] In an example, the method may further comprise transmitting (not shown) a measurement report containing measurement results obtained from the RS measurements in the neighbor cell. For example, the measurement report containing the RS measurement results in the neighbor cell may be transmitted on an event or periodic basis to the network. In an example, depending on the measurement type, i.e., intra-frequency or inter-frequency, different events or periodicities may be predefined for the measurement reporting. In an example, the measurement report may indicate that the RS measurement results are obtained from the intra-frequency measurements or the inter-frequency measurements. The network node can identify from the measurement report that the measurement is performed as the intra-frequency measurement or the inter-frequency measurement.

[0108] Fig. 10 illustrates a method for reference signal (RS) measurement according to an example embodiment of the present disclosure. The method may be implemented at a network node such as the network node 120 discussed above.

[0109] Referring to Fig. 10, the method may comprise transmitting a SBFD configuration of a serving cell to a terminal device at 1010, transmitting a RS configuration of the serving cell to the terminal device at 1020, transmitting a SBFD configuration of a neighbor cell to the terminal device at 1030, and transmitting a RS configuration of the neighbor cell to the terminal device at 1040. In the method, the network node transmits the SBFD configuration and the RS configuration of both the serving cell and the neighbor cell to the terminal device such as the UE 110 discussed above so that the terminal device can measure the reference signal in the serving cell and the neighbor cell when either or both of the serving cell and the neighbor cell operate in the SBFD mode.

[0110] In an example, the method may further comprise receiving (not shown) a measurement report containing measurement results of the RS measurements in the neighbor cell from the terminal device. In an example, the measurement report may indicate that the RS measurement results are obtained from the intra-frequency measurements or the inter-frequency measurements. The network node can identify from the measurement report that the RS measurement is performed as intra-frequency measurement or inter-frequency measurement at the terminal device.

[0111] Fig. 11 illustrates a method for reference signal (RS) measurement according to an example embodiment of the present disclosure. The method may be implemented at a network node such as the network node 120 discussed above.

[0112] Referring to Fig. 11, the method may comprise transmitting an SBFD configuration of a serving cell to a terminal device at 1110, and transmitting an RS configuration of a neighbor cell to the terminal device at 1120. The RS configuration may configure frequency and / or time resources for a reference signal in the neighbor cell. The RS configuration may further comprise information about valid RS resources to be measured in the neighbor cell.

[0113] In an example, the information about the valid RS resources to be measured in the neighbor cell may comprises at least one of an indication that the neighbor cell is an intra-frequency cell, an indication that the neighbor cell has same valid RS resources as the serving cell, an indication of puncturing to be applied to the configured RS resources of the neighbor cell, or an indication to apply same puncturing to the configured RS resources in the serving cell and the neighbor cell.

[0114] In an example, the method may further comprise receiving (not shown) a measurement report containing measurement results of the RS measurements in the neighbor cell from the terminal device. In an example, the measurement report may indicate that the RS measurement results are obtained from the intra-frequency measurements or the inter-frequency measurements. The network node can identify from the measurement report that the RS measurement is performed as intra-frequency measurement or inter-frequency measurement at the terminal device.

[0115] In the method, the network node may not transmit the SBFD configuration of the neighbor cell to the terminal device. Instead, the network node may transmit the information about the valid RS resources in the neighbor cell to the terminal device. The terminal device can determine the valid RS resources in the neighbor cell based on the information, the RS configuration of the neighbor cell and optionally the SBFD configuration of the serving cell.
