Description

Method, apparatus, device, and medium for generating engineering artifactsFIELD

[0001] The present disclosure relates to the technical field of industrial digitalization, in particular to a method, apparatus, device, and medium for generating engineering artifacts.BACKGROUND

[0002] Engineering artifacts are tangible or digital representations of design concepts, specifications, and technical information. These artifacts can include process flow diagrams, circuit schematics, 3D models, and various other forms of documentation that capture the essential details of engineered systems. The generation and management of these artifacts are integral to the engineering lifecycle, from initial concept development through to commissioning and operational maintenance.

[0003] Automatic generation of engineering artifacts leads to considerable benefits. On the one hand, engineering efforts are reduced which results in a reduction of costs and time-to-market. On the other hand, the requirements for the expertise of the required personnel are reduced, which is important in the times of scarcity of highly trained experts. Additionally, an automated generation of engineering artifacts results in a higher engineering quality because insufficiencies of the generation algorithms are normally much smaller than errors which occur in the manual execution of the work to be done.

[0004] The continuous evolvement of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning technologies has provided possibilities for automation of engineering. Large Language Models (LLMs) and Generative AI solutions, in particular, have shown promise in various domains for their ability to process and generate complex information. However, the application of these technologies in specialized engineering fields faces significant challenges.

[0005] AI-based solutions depend on the availability of training data. But in the industrial engineering domain this big amount of training data is not available. Firstly, engineering artifacts are often know-how protected. Companies don’t want to share their engineering artifacts to protect their specific knowledge and experience. Secondly, engineering artifacts are more domain specific than, e.g., texts in natural language. A circuit diagram for electrical engineering is very different from a process flow diagram. Furthermore, a process flow diagram for a power generation unit is very different from the one of a chemical plant.SUMMARY

[0006] Embodiments of the present disclosure propose a method, apparatus, device, and medium for generating engineering artifacts.

[0092] To make the purpose, technical scheme, and advantages of the disclosure clearer, the following examples are given to further explain the disclosure in detail. Nouns and pronouns related to people in this patent application are not limited to specific gender.

[0093] To be concise and intuitive in description, the scheme of the disclosure is described below by describing several representative embodiments. Many details in the embodiments are only used to help understand the scheme of the disclosure. However, it is obvious that the technical scheme of the disclosure can be realized without being limited to these details. To avoid unnecessarily blurring the scheme of the disclosure, some embodiments are not described in detail, but only the framework is given. Hereinafter, zincluding" refers to "including but not limited to" , "according to..." refers to "at least according to..., but not limited to..." . When the number of an element is not specifically indicated below, it means that the element can be one or more, or can be understood as at least one.

[0094] The present disclosure provides a method for generating engineering artifacts. Fig. 1 is an exemplary flowchart of a method 100 for generating engineering artifacts according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. As shown in Fig. 1, method 100 comprises:

[0095] step 110, providing an object library defining basic engineering objects;

[0096] An object library is used to define the basic objects of the engineering artifacts. For example, such basic objects are the plant components like heat exchanger, pump, tank, distillation column, reactor, etc. These plant components are modelled with regards to the capabilities they can provide like heating, cooling, transporting, storing, distilling, etc. Additionally, their interfaces, i.e., the substances at their inlet and outlets are defined like cooling liquid, distillate, etc. Since there is only a limited amount of such basic engineering objects, the preparation of the plant component library can be done without big efforts.

[0097] These basic objects can be considered as building blocks which can be used to create higher level engineering artifacts on several hierarchical levels. For example, the combination of a distillation column with two heat exchangers can be named as distillation process. The combination of a reactor with two heat exchangers can be named as a reaction process. On the next higher level, the combination of a vaporizer, reaction process, heat exchanger, two-phase-separator, and distillation process can be named as a cumene creation.

[0098] The use of an object library defining basic engineering objects provides a foundation of domain-specific knowledge without requiring extensive modeling efforts. This library can be relatively small and focused, containing only essential components relevant to a particular engineering field. By modeling these objects with regards to their capabilities and interfaces, the system can ensure that generated artifacts adhere to fundamental engineering principles and constraints, even when working with limited data.

[0099] step 120, creating an annotated artifact library comprising user-defined templates, wherein the user-defined templates are based on user’s selection and combination of the basic engineering objects;

[0100] A user can define the combination of a distillation column, a heat exchanger (annotates as cooler) , and a heat exchanger (annotates as heater) , as distillation process. By combination the user can define the specific desired layout of a process. Generated engineering artifacts should follow this definition.

[0101] The user can explicitly define the process as combination of sub-processes. The generated engineering artifacts should follow user’s definition for specific design. If the user doesn’ t explicitly define the combination of sub-processes, generated engineering artifact can follow a general layout based on public knowledge.

[0102] By performing these types of annotations on the different hierarchy levels, an annotated artifact library can be created. The annotated artifact library in the first place contains only templates which the user defines to make sure that generated engineering artifacts follow specific design rules. It is not a big library and can therefore be created without big efforts.

[0103] The annotated artifact library, containing user-defined templates, allows for the incorporation of domain-specific design rules and best practices. By allowing users to define templates and annotations, the system can generate engineering artifacts that follow user’s design rules and requirements.

[0104] Fig. 3 is an exemplary schematic diagram of cumene creation process with annotations according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. As shown in Fig. 3, annotations by user include cumene creation 301, propylene 302, benzene 303, vaporizing 304, heating / cooling 305, cooling liquid 306, reacting 307, reaction process 308, two-phase-separation 309, feed 310, distilling 311, bottom product 312, distillate 313, distillation process 314, and cumene 315.

[0105] Fig. 4 is an exemplary schematic diagram of one example for annotated artifacts library according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The example includes hierarchical annotations on cumene production. The hierarchical annotations include four levels, i.e., L1, L2, L3 and L4. Annotations L1 can be obtained from object library, and annotations L2, L3 and L4 can be obtained from users’s pecific design rules and / or public knowledge. As shown in Fig. 4, user can define the combination of distilling 401, cooling 402, heating 403, etc., as distillation process 404, define combination of distillation process 404, reaction process 405 and vaporization 406, etc., as cumene creation 407, define combination of cumene creation 407 and storage 408, etc., as cumene production 409.

[0106] Fig. 5 is an exemplary schematic diagram of another example for annotated artifacts library according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The example includes hierarchical annotations on chair production. The hierarchical annotations include four levels, i.e., L1, L2, L3 and L4. Annotations L1 can be obtained from object library, and annotations L2, L3 and L4 can be obtained from users’s pecific design rules and / or public knowledge. As shown in Fig. 5, user can define the combination of moving 501, checking 502, gripping opening 503, etc., as robot picking 504, define combination of robot picking 504, transporting 505 and glueing 506, etc., as assembly legs to seat 507, define combination of assembly legs to seat 507 and assembly upholstery to seat 508, etc., as chair production 509.

[0107] step 130, receiving user requirements for generation of an engineering artifact;

[0108] The user can define his requirements, e.g., via natural language to generate desired engineering artifacts. This is possible on different hierarchy levels. Examples for user requirement can be “Prepare a PFD (Process Flow Diagrams) including a pump which feeds into a tank followed by a heat exchanger” , “Prepare a process consisting of one reaction process and two distillation processes” , and “Prepare the PFD for a cumene process” .

[0109] step 140, selecting subsystems in the annotated artifact library based on the user requirements;

[0110] Based on the user requirements the corresponding subsystems respectively are selected. For example, for user requirements “Prepare a PFD including a pump which feeds into a tank followed by a heat exchanger” , “a pump feeds into a tank” , “a pump followed by a heat exchanger” can be extracted. The extracted “a pump feeds into a tank” , “a pump followed by a heat exchanger” will be searched in the annotated artifact library. As a result, the subsystem “a pump feeds into a tank” , “a pump followed by a heat exchanger” will be selected.

[0111] step 150, combining the subsystems using a large language model to generate the engineering artifact.

[0112] The selected subsystems are combined to generate the engineering artifact. The input- / output-specifications of the annotated building blocks in the annotated artifact library define which connections between subsystems are possible. Therefore, it can be assured that no unreasonable connections will be created. Higher-level components in the annotated artifact library may define combinations of subsystems. This information can be reused for other higher-level engineering artifacts also.

[0113] A large language model (LLM) is used to perform the combination of subsystems. Using a large language model for combining selected subsystems introduces the capability of intelligence and adaptability that is absent in traditional rule-based approaches. While the object library and annotated artifact library provide the necessary domain-specific knowledge, the large language model can leverage its general understanding of language and relationships to make intelligent decisions about how to combine and arrange subsystems.

[0114] There is a tradeoff between the availability of training data and the necessity for the provision of domain-specific annotations. If there is sufficient training data, the user can provide less annotations. However, the user is required to specify domain-specific design rules. In case of scarce training data availability, the user may provide annotations on higher levels to get better results. Even if a standard or general LLM is used (no domain-specific training data available) , reasonable and beneficial results can be generated.

[0115] Therefore, the present disclosure provides a method for generating engineering artifacts with the combination of rule-based approach and large language model technology. Use of pre-defined object library provides a foundation of domain-specific knowledge and use of user-defined annotated artifact library ensure alignment with user’s requirements and design rules. Use of a large language model for combining selected subsystems introduces capability of intelligence and adaptability that is absent in traditional rule-based approaches. Thus, an accurate and efficient method of generating engineering artifacts can be realized.

[0116] In some embodiments of the present disclosure, wherein creating an annotated artifact library comprising user-defined templates comprising: creating an annotated artifact library using the large language model. In detail, the creation of the Annotated Artifact Library can be conducted with the support of a standard LLM. For example, if a standard LLM is asked how it would name a process consisting of a distillation column with a heater on top and a cooler at the bottom, it would suggest calling it distillation process.

[0117] In some embodiments of the present disclosure, selecting subsystems in the annotated artifact library based on the user requirements comprising: mapping the user requirements with annotations of the user-defined templates in the annotated artifact library;
