Abstract
Description
Holder for SIM Card, Method of Formation and SIM Card and Holder AssemblyField of the Invention
[0001] This invention relates to a holder for a subscriber identification module (SIM) card, a method of forming such a holder, and a SIM card and holder assembly. Background of the Invention
[0002] SIM cards are used for uniquely identifying equipment with telecommunication capability, such as mobile phones. Before SIM cards are installed in a mobile phone, such is integrally formed with a surrounding frame (which is usually made of plastics) . Upon detachment of the SIM card from the surrounding frame, it can no longer be re-attached to the frame, and the frame will be disposed of subsequently.
[0003] While such an arrangement has been in place for a long time, with the increasing awareness for eco-friendliness, there is a demand for an environmentally sustainable alternative.
[0004] It is an objective of the present invention to provide a holder for a subscriber identification module (SIM) card, a method of forming such a holder, and a SIM card and holder assembly to meet the above demand or at least to provide a useful alternative to the trade and public.Summary of the Invention
[0005] According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a holder for a subscriber identification module (SIM) card including a cavity for receiving at least a part of a SIM card; wherein said cavity has a first opening through a first major surface of said holder and at least one opening through a second major surface of said holder which is opposite to said first major surface; wherein said first opening is sized and configured to allow said SIM card to pass through; and wherein said second opening is sized or configured to prevent said SIM card to pass through.
[0006] In an embodiment, the holder is made at least partly of paper.
[0007] In an embodiment, the holder is made substantially wholly of paper.
[0008] In an embodiment, the holder includes a first part and a second part fixedly engaged with each other.
[0009] In an embodiment, the first part is of a thickness substantially the same as a thickness of said SIM card, and wherein said second part is thinner than said first part.
[0010] In an embodiment, the second part includes said second opening and a third opening separated by a bridge portion.
[0011] According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of forming a holder for a subscriber identification module (SIM) card including fixedly engaging a first part and a second part with each other to form a cavity for receiving at least a part of a SIM card; wherein said first part includes a first opening sized and configured to allow said SIM card to pass through; and wherein said second part includes at least a second opening sized or configured to prevent said SIM card to pass through.
[0012] In an embodiment, the said holder is made at least partly of paper.
[0013] In an embodiment, the holder is made substantially wholly of paper.
[0014] In an embodiment, the first part is of a thickness substantially the same as a thickness of said SIM card, and wherein said second part is thinner than said first part.
[0015] In an embodiment, the second part includes said second opening and a third opening separated by a bridge portion.
[0016] According to a third aspect of the present invention, there is provided a subscriber identification module (SIM) card and holder assembly including a holder for a SIM card including a cavity for receiving at least a part of a SIM card; wherein said cavity has a first opening through a first major surface of said holder and at least one opening through a second major surface of said holder which is opposite to said first major surface; wherein said first opening is sized and configured to allow said SIM card to pass through; and wherein said second opening is sized or configured to prevent said SIM card to pass through, and a SIM card received at least partly within said cavity of said holder.
[0017] In an embodiment, a first major surface of said SIM card is substantially co-planar with said first major surface of said holder.
[0018] In an embodiment, the assembly further includes an anti-tamper security label sticker engaged with said major surface of said SIM card and said first major surface of said holder.
[0019] In an embodiment, said major surface of said holder includes at least one scratch label.Brief Description of the Drawings
[0020] Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of examples only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a front view of a holder for a subscriber identification module (SIM) card according to an embodiment of the present invention; Figure 2 shows an exploded view of the holder of Figure 1; Figure 3 shows a way of engaging a SIM card with the holder of Figure 1; Figure 4 shows a rear perspective view of a SIM card and holder assembly formed of the SIM card and holder of Figure 3; Figure 5 shows a front view of the SIM card and holder assembly of Figure 4; and Figure 6 shows a rear view of the SIM card and holder assembly of Figure 5.Description of the Embodiments
[0021] A holder for a subscriber identification module (SIM) card is shown in Figure 1 and generally designated as 10, and an exploded view of the holder 10 is shown in Figure 2. The holder 10 includes a top layer 12 and a bottom layer 14 fixedly engaged with each other, e.g., by an adhesive, to collectively form a cavity for receiving a SIM card.
[0022] Both the top layer 12 and the bottom layer 14 are made of paper, such as FSC certified paper, i.e., paper products that have been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council as being sourced from well-managed forests that provide environmental, social, and economic benefits. The top layer 12 is of a thickness the same as a SIM card, and the bottom layer is thinner than the top paper layer 12. The top layer 12 is formed with an opening 16 sized and configured to receive a SIM card. To assist in retaining a SIM card 23 (see Figure 3) , which is not integrally formed with the holder 10, in the opening 16 of the holder 10, the opening 16 may be sized and configured to retain the SIM card 23 snugly or by friction. As for the bottom layer 14, such includes two openings 18, 20 separated from each other by a bridge portion 22, and the openings 18, 20 are smaller than the SIM card 23 which may be a 4FF Nano SIM card, a 3FF Micro SIM card or a 2FF SIM card.
[0023] As shown in Figure 3, the SIM card 23 may be engaged with the holder 10 to form a SIM card and holder assembly, generally designated as 30 as shown in Figure 4. In particular, the SIM card 23 may be received within a cavity of the holder 10. In particular, the SIM card 23 is received within the opening 16 of the top layer 12 and supported by the bridge portion 22 of the bottom layer 14. It can be seen that the bridge portion 22 prevents the SIM card 23 from passing through the bottom layer 14. Put another way, because the openings 18, 20 are smaller than 4FF, the SIM card 23 cannot pass through either of the openings 18, 20.
[0024] When the SIM card 23 is thus received within the holder 10 to form the SIM card and holder assembly 30, and as shown in Figure 5, an upper major surface 24 of the SIM card 23 is co-planar with an upper major surface 26 of the holder 10. To provide anti-tampering function, as well as assisting in retaining the SIM card 23 in the holder 10, an anti-tamper security label sticker 28 is engaged with the upper surface 24 of the SIM card 23 and the upper major surface 26 of the holder 10. In particular, it can be seen that the anti-tamper security label sticker 28 spans across the SIM card 23.
[0025] As shown in Figure 6, a lower major surface 32 of the holder 10 (which is opposite to the upper major surface 26 of the holder 10) includes a scratch label 34 and may be printed with bar codes 36.
[0026] As shown in Figures 4 and 6, each of the windows 18, 20 exposes a respective portion of a lower major surface 42 of the SIM card 23 to the outside, such that such information as the integrate circuit card identity (ICCID) 38 and other information or code, such as QR code 40, on the lower major surface 42 of the SIM card 23 is exposed to the outside and may therefore be read (for example, by scanning) , e.g., for re-personalization or updating the SIM card for the second time.
[0027] It should be understood that the above only illustrates examples whereby the present invention may be carried out, and that various modifications and / or alterations may be made thereto without departing from the spirit of the invention.
[0028] It should also be understood that certain features of the invention, which are, for clarity, described in the context of separate embodiments, may be provided in combination in a single embodiment. Conversely, various features of the invention which are, for brevity, described in the context of a single embodiment, may also be provided separately or in any appropriate sub-combinations.
