Description

LASER PROCESSING SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR ADJUSTING BEAM PROPERTIES THEREOFTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] This disclosure relates to the technical field of laser processing devices, in particular to a laser processing system and a method for adjusting beam properties of the laser processing system.BACKGROUND ART

[0002] In laser processing nowadays, there is an increasing need to use high-power laser output, which is typically provided by a high-power fiber laser system that is a combination of a few lower power laser modules. For instance, four 3 kW fiber lasers are combined via a fiber beam combiner to obtain a high-power output of 12 kW. The fiber beam combiner can be fabricated based on mode conversion principles to provide a desired output beam quality. As the application demand broadens, the requirement of the fiber beam combiner becomes more diverse and specialized. For example, in BrightLine Welding using a coaxial fiber, the coaxial fiber comprises a core fiber and a ring fiber surrounding the core fiber. By adjusting the laser energy density transmitted by the core fiber and / or the ring fiber, the laser welding can be controlled to achieve desired weld quality. For such a coaxial fiber (or ring spot fiber) , due to the core-ring structure, various conventional methods for adjusting laser parameters, particularly beam parameter product (BPP) , at the output port of the fiber beam combiner are no longer applicable, because some of these adjustments will simultaneously have an uncontrollable impact on the beams within both the core fiber and the ring fiber, while others cannot affect the core fiber within the ring spot fiber, resulting in undesired beam output. Therefore, these parameters can often only be fixed by the fabrication of the fiber beam combiner. This, on the one hand, places high requirements on the fabrication of the fiber beam combiner; on the other hand, once the fiber beam combiner is fabricated, many laser parameters, especially the BPP, are fixed, and post-tuning is essentially no longer possible, thus limiting the application of laser processing systems with coaxial fibers. Furthermore, the adjustment of certain laser parameters is not always unidirectional. For example, a smaller BPP value is not always better; rather, an appropriate value is determined based on practical processing application. Consequently, there is an even greater need for a high-power laser processing system that allows flexible adjustment of beam properties.

[0003] SUMMARY OF THE DISCLOSURE

[0004] The objective of the present application is to provide a laser processing system and a method for adjusting beam properties of the laser processing system, which can at least partially solve the problems existing in the prior art.

[0005] According to a first aspect of the present application, a laser processing system is provided, comprising:

[0006] an output fiber, which is configured to emit a laser beam onto a workpiece to be processed to process the workpiece to be processed, and which comprises a central core fiber and a ring fiber surrounding the core fiber;

[0007] a plurality of fiber lasers as laser sources, wherein one or more of the plurality of fiber lasers are configured to provide a core beam transmitted within the core fiber, and another one or more of the plurality of fiber lasers are configured to provide a ring beam transmitted within the ring fiber; and

[0008] a beam property adjustment unit, which is configured to individually adjust at least one beam property of each of the core beam and the ring beam.

[0009] With the laser processing system according to the first aspect of the present application, by individually adjusting at least one beam property of each of the core beam and the ring beam, various laser parameters of the laser beam output by the output fiber can be adjusted, thereby improving the flexibility of the laser processing system to meet various requirements in laser processing applications.

[0010] According to an exemplary embodiment, the at least one beam property comprises a beam parameter product. By means of this embodiment, the respective beam parameter products BPP of the core beam and the ring beam of the laser beam output by the output fiber can be flexibly adjusted, enabling the laser processing system to meet more laser processing requirements.

[0011] According to an exemplary embodiment, the beam property adjustment unit is configured to individually adjust at least one beam property of the core beam before the core beam is coupled into the core fiber of the output fiber, and to individually adjust at least one beam property of the ring beam after the ring beam is coupled into the ring fiber of the output fiber. Since the core fiber within the output fiber is not sensitive to external interference, through this embodiment, by adjusting at least one beam property of the core beam prior to its coupling into the core fiber of the output fiber, it is possible to independently adjust at least one beam property of the core beam, and by adjusting the output fiber as a whole after beam combining, it is possible to independently adjust at least one beam property of the ring beam within the outer ring fiber in a simple manner.

[0012] According to an exemplary embodiment, output from one or more of the plurality of fiber lasers that provide the core beam is coupled to the core fiber of the output fiber via a common core input fiber, and the beam property adjustment unit comprises: a first adjustment device, configured to operate on the core input fiber to alter at least one beam property of the core beam transmitted within the core input fiber; and a second adjustment device, configured to operate on the output fiber to alter at least one beam property of the ring beam transmitted within the ring fiber of the output fiber. By means of this embodiment, the first adjustment device and the second adjustment device of the beam property adjustment unit can be used to adjust beam properties of the core beam and the ring beam, respectively.

[0013] According to an exemplary embodiment, the first adjustment device is a fiber fixture, and the fiber fixture is configured to form a long-period grating together with the clamped core input fiber by clamping the core input fiber and maintaining the clamped core input fiber in a predetermined shape. This embodiment enables the adjustment of beam properties, particularly the BPP, of the core beam in a simple manner using an fiber fixture.

[0014] According to an exemplary embodiment, the fiber fixture comprises a pair of oppositely arranged wave-shaped clamping surfaces that are suitable for clamping fibers, and the number of arc-shaped sections of the wave-shaped clamping surfaces, values for radius of curvature and central angle of each arc-shaped section depend on transmittance and divergence of the core beam after passing through the long-period grating. Based on this embodiment, the parameters of the fiber fixture can be determined according to the desired transmittance and BPP of the core beam, and thus various desired transmittances and BPPs of the core beam can be obtained by changing the parameters of the fiber fixture.

[0015] According to an exemplary embodiment, the fiber fixture comprises a first clamping block and a second clamping block, the pair of oppositely arranged wave-shaped clamping surfaces are formed on the first clamping block and the second clamping block, respectively, and the first clamping block is configured to move and be fixed relative to the second clamping block between a first position, in which the pair of oppositely arranged wave-shaped clamping surfaces are in surface contact, and a second position, in which the pair of oppositely arranged wave-shaped clamping surfaces are spaced apart at a predetermined distance. This embodiment achieves a simple adjustment of the transmittance and BPP of the core beam within the core input fiber by clamping the core input fiber between the first clamping block and the second clamping block.

[0016] According to an exemplary embodiment, the second clamping block includes a bearing surface for bearing the first clamping block and a boss portion protruding from the bearing surface, the wave-shaped clamping surface of the second clamping block is formed on a side of the boss portion facing the first clamping block, and the first clamping block is configured to be slidable and fixable along the bearing surface of the second clamping block between the first position and the second position. This embodiment can provide a fiber fixture that is simple in structure and easy to operate.

[0017] According to an exemplary embodiment, the first clamping block and the second clamping block are both formed to be substantially plate-shaped and are arranged oppositely to each other, the wave-shaped clamping surfaces are formed on oppositely arranged surfaces of the first clamping block and the second clamping block, respectively, and the first clamping block and the second clamping block cooperate with each other through a guiding and fixing structure therebetween, so that the first clamping block can move and be fixed relative to the second clamping block between the first position and the second position. This embodiment provides an alternative fiber fixture that is simple in structure and easy to operate.

[0018] According to an exemplary embodiment, the second adjustment device is a fiber winding tray, and the output fiber is wound around a fiber winding portion of the fiber winding tray. This embodiment achieves a simple adjustment of at least one beam property, in particular the BPP, of the ring beam within the ring fiber by bending the output fiber, without disturbing the core beam within the core fiber.

[0019] According to an exemplary embodiment, a winding radius of the fiber winding portion depends on tensile strength and / or radius of the output fiber. This embodiment enables determining the winding radius of the fiber winding portion based on tensile strength and / or radius of the output fiber and the desired beam property of the ring beam, thereby achieving the desired beam property of the ring beam.

[0021] According to an exemplary embodiment, the fiber laser is a kilowatt-class fiber laser.

[0022] According to an exemplary embodiment, a core fiber diameter / ring fiber diameter of the output fiber is 100 / 300 μm or 100 / 600 μm.

[0041] For a clearer understanding of the technical problem to be solved, technical solutions and advantageous technical effects of the present application, the invention will be further elaborated in conjunction with the drawings and a number of exemplary embodiments. It is to be understood that the specific embodiments described herein are only for the purpose of explaining the invention, rather than limiting the scope of the invention.

[0042] FIG. 1 shows a schematic illustration of main parts of a laser processing system 100 according to an exemplary embodiment of the present application. As shown in FIG. 1, the laser processing system 100 according to the present application is a high-power fiber laser system formed by combining several low-power fiber lasers 1, and adopts a coaxial fiber as an output fiber 2, making it suitable for BrightLine Welding. The output fiber 2 emits a laser beam onto a workpiece to be processed, to perform processing, precision processing, particularly welding, or additive manufacturing on the workpiece to be processed. A coaxial fiber is also referred to as a W-type fiber, or a ring spot fiber or a 2-in-1 fiber. FIG. 2 schematically shows a fiber cross-sectional view of the output fiber 2. As shown in FIG. 1 and FIG. 2, the coaxial fiber / output fiber 2 comprises a central core fiber 21 and a ring fiber 22 surrounding the core fiber 21, and a laser beam can be transmitted within either the core fiber 21 or the ring fiber 22, or within both simultaneously. Herein, the laser beam transmitted within the core fiber 21 is referred to as core beam, and the laser beam transmitted within the ring fiber 22 is referred to as ring beam. Among a plurality of fiber lasers 1, one or more fiber lasers 1 (one of which is shown schematically in FIG. 1) are configured to provide a core beam transmitted within the core fiber 21, while another one or more fiber lasers 1 are configured to provide a ring beam transmitted within the ring fiber 22. By changing the number and / or power models of the fiber lasers 1 providing the core beam and the ring beam, the power ratio between the core beam and the ring beam output by the output fiber 2 can be altered to obtain a desired output beam, thereby achieving advantages such as reducing spatter and improving surface formation in various processing procedures. In addition to regulating the power distribution between the core beam and the ring beam as needed, to further improve processing quality, it may also be necessary to appropriately adjust some other beam properties of the beam to obtain ideal laser parameters. As mentioned earlier, due to the core-ring structure, conventional beam property adjustment methods are no longer applicable to the output fiber 2. However, the laser processing system 100 according to the present application further comprises a beam property adjustment unit 3, which is configured to individually adjust at least one beam property of each of the core beam and the ring beam, thereby enabling adjustment of various laser parameters of the output beam of the output fiber 2 to meet more processing requirements.

[0043] Representative examples of beam properties that need adjustment are transmittance and beam parameter product, hereinafter simply referred to as BPP. As described above, for a coaxial fiber, due to structural reasons, the BPP parameter can often only be fixed by the fabrication of the fiber beam combiner, and no post-tuning is essentially possible. However, in the laser processing system 100 according to the present application, the beam property adjustment unit 3 can adjust the BPP parameter for the core beam and the ring beam respectively.

[0044] FIG. 3 shows a schematic structural diagram of a laser processing system 100 according to an exemplary embodiment of the present application. In the exemplary embodiment shown in FIG. 3, the laser processing system 100 further comprises a fiber beam combiner 4, through which the core beam and the ring beam provided by the plurality of fiber lasers 1 are combined into the output fiber 2, whereas the beam property adjustment unit 3 of the laser processing system 100 according to the present application is adapted to perform adjustment of at least one beam property, particularly BPP adjustment, for the core beam prior to combination by the fiber beam combiner 4, and to operate on the entire output fiber 2 after combination by the fiber beam combiner 4 to achieve adjustment of at least one beam property, particularly BPP adjustment, for the ring beam.

[0045] Specifically, in the embodiment shown in FIG. 3, the output from one or more of the plurality of fiber lasers 1 that provide the core beam is first coupled to a core input fiber 5. There are two scenarios here: In the first scenario, when there is only one fiber laser 1 providing the core beam, the tail fiber of that single fiber laser 1 can be directly coupled-connected to a core input fiber 5, for example, via fusion splicing, without needing a beam combiner for beam combining; and in the second scenario, when there are multiple fiber lasers 1 providing the core beam, these multiple fiber lasers 1 can be combined into a single core input fiber 5 via another beam combiner 6. The core input fiber 5 is coupled to the core fiber 21 of the output fiber 2 via the fiber beam combiner 4, i.e., the core beam transmitted within the core input fiber 5 is coupled into the core fiber 21 of the output fiber 2 via the fiber beam combiner 4. Furthermore, the one or more fiber lasers 1 providing the ring beam are coupled to the ring fiber 22 of the output fiber 2 via the fiber beam combiner 4, i.e., the laser beams provided by these fiber lasers 1 are directly coupled as the ring beam into the ring fiber 22 of the output fiber 2 via the fiber beam combiner 4. Upon need, when there are multiple fiber lasers 1 providing the ring beam, these multiple fiber lasers 1 may also be combined into a single ring input fiber via another beam combiner (not shown) , and then this ring input fiber is coupled to the ring fiber 22 of the output fiber 2 via the fiber combiner 4. With such a configuration, it is also possible to perform beam property adjustment specifically for the ring beam by operating on the ring input fiber using the beam property adjustment unit 3 before the ring beam is coupled into the ring fiber 22 of output fiber 2 (for example, as shown in FIG. 1, the system is configured to perform beam property adjustment specifically for the ring beam prior to beam combining using the beam property adjustment unit 3) . However, in this embodiment, the one or more fiber lasers 1 providing the ring beam may be directly coupled to the ring fiber 22 of the output fiber 2 respectively via the fiber beam combiner 4. Here, the fiber combiner 4 may be an (N+1) ×1 signal combiner, comprising N ring-beam input fibers 42 and 1 core-beam input fiber 41, the ring-beam input fibers 42 are respectively coupled-connected to tail fibers of one or more fiber lasers 1 that provide the ring beam, and the core-beam input fiber 41 is coupled-connected to the core input fiber 5 or is the core input fiber 5 itself. Here, N is an integer, in particular N=6, and the N ring-beam input fibers 42 are arranged symmetrically around the center of the single core-beam input fiber 41.

[0046] The beam property adjustment unit 3 comprises: a first adjustment device 31, configured to operate on the core input fiber 5 to alter at least one beam property, particularly the BPP, of the core beam transmitted within the core input fiber 5; and a second adjustment device 32,configured to operate on the output fiber 2 to alter at least one beam property, particularly the BPP, of the ring beam transmitted within the ring fiber 22 of the output fiber 2, particularly to alter the BPP of the ring beam transmitted solely within the ring fiber 22 of the output fiber 2.

[0047] In a particularly preferred embodiment, the first adjustment device 31 of the beam property adjustment unit 3 is configured as a fiber fixture. FIG. 4 shows a schematic plan view of a fiber fixture 310 as the first adjustment device 31 according to an exemplary embodiment. As shown in Figure 4, the fiber fixture 310 comprises a pair of oppositely arranged wave-shaped clamping surfaces 311, 312 that are suitable for clamping fibers, as well as a first clamping block 313 and a second clamping block 314; the pair of oppositely arranged wave-shaped clamping surfaces 311, 312 are formed on the first clamping block 313 and the second clamping block 314, respectively. The first clamping block 313 is configured to move and be fixed relative to the second clamping block 314 between a first position, in which the pair of oppositely arranged wave-shaped clamping surfaces 311 and 312 are in surface contact, and a second position, in which the pair of oppositely arranged wave-shaped clamping surfaces 311 and 312 are spaced apart at a predetermined distance. The wave-shaped clamping surfaces 311, 312 each have a plurality of arc-shaped sections, and in the first position, the arc-shaped sections of the wave-shaped clamping surfaces 311, 312 can be form-fitted to each other. The fiber fixture 310 constructed in this manner is suitable for clamping and releasing fibers between the pair of oppositely arranged wave-shaped clamping surfaces 311 and 312, and is thus configured to form a long-period grating together with the clamped core input fiber 5 by clamping the core input fiber 5 and maintaining the clamped core input fiber 5 in a predetermined shape, particularly a wave-like shape, thereby enabling adjustment of the BPP of the core beam within the core input fiber 5 via the long-period grating. FIG. 5 schematically shows, in an exaggerated manner, an arc-shaped section of the wave-shaped clamping surfaces 311 and 312 of the fiber fixture 310, along with its dimensional parameters. When choosing or designing the fiber fixture 310, the number Nx of arc-shaped sections of the wave-shaped clamping surfaces 311, 312, values for radius of curvature R and central angle θ of each arc-shaped section can be determined based on the transmittance and divergence of the core beam at a corresponding wavelength provided by the fiber laser 1 after passing through the formed long-period grating, thereby obtaining a desired transmittance and BPP of the core beam by means of the resulting corresponding long-period grating. Based on experience, for lasers operating in common wavelength ranges and in general laser processing applications, the number Nx of arc-shaped sections of the wave-shaped clamping surfaces 311, 312 is usually selected from a range of 3 to 9, the radius of curvature R ranges from 15 to 40 mm, and the central angle θ ranges from 5 to 25 degrees. Additionally, it should be noted that the minimum bending radius of the clamped optical fiber, here the core input fiber 5, is limited by its tensile strength. An excessively small bending radius can cause additional bending loss and therefore affect system performance. Hence, the value of the minimum radius of curvature R of the arc-shaped sections should be more than 200 times larger than the radius of the corresponding core input fiber 5, thereby avoiding additional bending loss caused by an excessively small bending radius.

[0048] FIG. 6A and FIG. 6B respectively show a plan view and a perspective view of a fiber fixture 310 as a first adjustment device 31 according to another exemplary embodiment, wherein parts having identical functions are denoted by the same reference signs as in FIG. 4. The fiber fixture shown in FIGS. 6A and 6B differs from the fiber fixture shown in FIG. 4 only in the specific shapes of the first clamping block 313 and the second clamping block 314, as well as the resulting differences in their cooperation and operational modes.

[0049] For the fiber fixture 310 shown in FIG. 4, the second clamping block 314 includes a bearing surface for bearing the first clamping block 313 and a boss portion protruding from the bearing surface, the wave-shaped clamping surface 312 of the second clamping block 314 is formed on a side of the boss portion facing the first clamping block 313, and the first clamping block 313 is configured to be slidable and fixable along the bearing surface of the second clamping block 314 between the first position and the second position (in the up-down direction in the figure) . The sliding and fixing are achieved, for example, by a guide hole on the first clamping block 313 and a bolt that can pass through the guide hole and be threadedly fixed to the second clamping block 314.

[0050] For the fiber fixture 310 shown in FIGS. 6A and 6B, the first clamping block 313 and the second clamping block 314 are formed to be substantially plate-shaped. The two substantially plate-shaped clamping blocks 313 and 314 are arranged oppositely to each other, and the wave-shaped clamping surfaces 311 and 312 are formed on the oppositely arranged surfaces of the two clamping blocks 313 and 314, respectively. The two clamping blocks 313, 314 cooperate with each other through a guiding and fixing structure therebetween, so that the first clamping block 313 can move and be fixed relative to the second clamping block 314 between the first position and the second position. The guiding and fixing structure can be, for example, bolt-screw hole structures at multiple positions (e.g., at the four corners in the figure) , so that the relative position between the first clamping block 313 and the second clamping block 314 is adjusted by threaded engagement. Preferably, one clamping block (exemplarily shown as the first clamping block 313 in the figure) may have a boss portion protruding towards the other clamping block, and its corresponding wave-shaped clamping surface (exemplarily shown as the wave-shaped clamping surface 311 in the figure) is formed at least on an end face of the boss portion facing the other clamping block. Such a design can compensate for the geometric height of guiding and fixing structures such as bolt-screw hole structures, making the fiber fixture 310 more suitable for clamping optical fibers with smaller radial dimensions.

[0051] In a preferred embodiment, the second adjustment device 32 of the beam property adjustment unit 3 is a fiber winding tray, and the output fiber 2 is wound around a fiber winding portion of the fiber winding tray, thereby simply using the bending of the fiber as an adjustment mechanism to adjust the BPP of the ring beam within the ring fiber 22 of the output fiber 2, while not affecting the core beam within the core fiber 21. The fiber winding portion can be formed as a simple cylindrical shape, a semi-cylindrical shape, or any other shape having an arc-shaped section capable of bending the fiber with a winding radius. The winding radius of the fiber winding portion (the bending radius of the output fiber 2) depends on the tensile strength and / or the radius of the output fiber 2. Taking a coaxial fiber with a core / ring diameter of 100 / 600 μm as an example, extensive experiments have found that for a bending radius ranging from 80mm to 220mm, the adjustment range for the BPP of the beam within the ring fiber 22 can reach 3mm. mrad. Furthermore, the minimum bending radius of the output fiber 2 is limited by its tensile strength. An excessively small bending radius can cause additional bending loss and therefore affect system performance. According to experience, the minimum bending radius of the output fiber 2 should be selected to be more than 200 times larger than its radius, thereby avoiding additional bending loss.

[0052] In an optional embodiment, the fiber winding portion is detachably fixed on the fiber winding tray, so that fiber winding portions with different radius dimensions can be replaced as needed. Furthermore, in an optional embodiment, the fiber beam combiner 4 can be detachably fixed on the fiber winding tray, or the fiber winding tray itself is a fiber beam combiner tray for the fiber beam combiner 4.

[0053] In an optional embodiment, the fiber laser 1 is a kilowatt-class fiber laser, for example, a 3kW fiber laser.

[0054] In an optional embodiment, the diameter of the fiber core / inner cladding of the tail fiber of the fiber laser 1 and / or each input fiber 41, 42 of the fiber combiner 4 is 20 / 250 μm, and the numerical aperture of the fiber core / inner cladding is 0.07.

[0055] In an optional embodiment, the core fiber diameter / ring fiber diameter of the output fiber 2 is 100 / 300 μm or 100 / 600 μm.

[0056] Exemplary embodiments of the laser processing system 100 according to the present application have been described above, but the laser processing system 100 according to the present application is certainly not limited thereto. For example, the beam property adjustment unit 3 may further include any suitable number of other adjustment devices for performing various other beam property adjustments on the core beam and / or the ring beam before and / or after combination, such as other fiber bending / stretching assemblies, heating devices, piezoelectric devices, acousto-optic transducers, etc., or any combination thereof. The beam properties adjusted may also include beam diameter, beam divergence distribution, intensity distribution, M2 factor, numerical aperture, light intensity profile, power density profile, radial beam position, spot size, etc., or any combination thereof.

[0057] The present application also relates to a method for adjusting beam properties of a laser processing system 100, comprising: determining parameters of a first adjustment device 31 and a second adjustment device 32 of a beam property adjustment unit 3 based on laser beam parameters of a fiber laser 1, parameters of an output fiber 2, and desired parameters of output laser beam of the output fiber 2; before a core beam is coupled into the output fiber 2, using the first adjustment device 31 to individually adjust at least one beam property, particularly the BPP, of the core beam; and using the second adjustment device 32 to act on the output fiber 2 to individually adjust at least one beam property, particularly BPP, of a ring beam.

[0058] While specific embodiments of the invention have been described in detail herein, they are for the purpose of explanation only and should not be construed as limitations of the scope of the invention. Various substitutions, changes and modifications can be devised without deviating from the spirit and scope of the present application.
