Description

MACHINE-IMPLEMENTED AIR-POLLUTION MODELING, RECONSTRUCTION, AND ANALYSIS SYSTEM AND METHODInventor: Alexis Kai Hon LAUCross-reference to Related Applications:

[0001] The present application claims priority from the United States Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 779,335 filed March 28, 2025, and the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.Field of the Invention:

[0002] The present invention relates generally to environmental air quality modeling, monitoring, and prediction technologies. More particularly, the invention pertains to a system and method for reconstructing high-resolution spatial air pollution fields by integrating multi-scale environmental modeling, real-time observational data, and data fusion techniques, and optionally estimating personal exposure based on the reconstructed environmental fields.Background of the Invention:

[0003] Air pollution constitutes a persistent environmental and public health challenge, particularly in high-density metropolitan regions. Long-term exposure to atmospheric pollutants including fine particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) , nitrogen dioxide (NO2) , and ozone (O3) has been widely associated with increased incidence of respiratory disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and other chronic health conditions. As urban populations continue to grow and human activities become increasingly mobile, there is a growing demand for approaches capable of characterizing air pollution conditions at fine spatial and temporal scales in real-time, rather than relying solely on generalized ambient measurements. Accurate and spatially resolved, personalized air quality information is therefore increasingly relevant for supporting individual health management as well as broader environmental governance and urban planning initiatives.

[0004] Conventional air quality monitoring frameworks primarily depend on fixed monitoring stations distributed across a city. Although such stations provide standardized and reliable pollutant measurements, their limited spatial density restricts their ability to capture micro-environmental variations and personal exposure differences arising from individual mobility, daily routines, and indoor–outdoor transitions. In addition, many existing air quality prediction models operate at relatively coarse spatial resolutions, typically on the order of approximately one kilometer or larger, which limits their ability to represent fine-scale spatial variability in urban environments. Recent advances in wearable sensors and mobile monitoring devices have partially addressed these limitations by enabling localized pollutant measurements. For example, US Patent No. 10890343B2 discloses a real-time system and method for personal air pollution exposure and inhaled dose management, wherein a personal device determines personal exposure and inhaled dose metrics, and compares daily histories of these metrics with personal health histories to provide notifications when adverse health effects are likely to occur. However, these existing technologies cannot flexibly adjust estimation resolution according to environmental conditions, spatial variability, data availability, or computational constraints. As a result, the estimated air quality may be too coarse to represent localized pollution variation near roads, buildings, transport corridors, or micro-environments, or may be unnecessarily fine in situations where such detail is not available or not required. Therefore, these existing solutions cannot effectively capture spatial heterogeneity of air pollutants across complex environments. Consequently, such approaches are limited in their ability to provide accurate, location-relevant, and computationally efficient personal air quality estimation due to insufficient spatial representation of environmental pollution fields. Accordingly, there remains a need for a system capable of reconstructing high-resolution, spatially continuous pollution fields from limited observational data while maintaining consistency across multiple spatial scales.Summary of the Invention:

[0005] To address the limitations of static air quality stations and conventional mobile monitoring devices, the present invention provides an advanced environmental air quality modeling, reconstruction, and analysis system, and, more specifically, a high-resolution air pollution field reconstruction framework using integrated multi-scale modeling, real-time data assimilation, and microenvironment sensing. The system incorporates air quality modeling frameworks configured to generate real-time pollution values based on meteorological projections, regional and local emission inventories, and urban morphological characteristics. By integrating traffic-resolved emission simulation, real-time data assimilation, and local pollution field reconstruction, the system provides ambient air pollution estimates with improved spatial resolution and temporal accuracy compared with regional air quality models that operate without such capabilities. Although urban environments are described herein for illustration, the system and method are applicable to a wide range of environments including urban, suburban, rural, industrial, and regional environments.

[0006] Based on the reconstructed and modeled ambient pollution data, the system is configured to derive personalized daily air pollution exposure values. Multi-source environmental data are aggregated with individual-level contextual parameters, allowing exposure estimation to evolve dynamically in response to changes in environmental conditions and user behavior. This integrated data processing framework enables fine-grained exposure estimation across outdoor and indoor environments.

[0007] The system further incorporates location data, optionally obtained from user devices, to identify movement trajectories and associated micro-environmental contexts. In addition, users may provide micro-environmental information, including durations of air conditioner operation, air purifier usage, and window opening. Such user-provided inputs allow the system to account for indoor air quality dynamics, thereby improving the accuracy of daily exposure estimation beyond location-based inference alone.

[0008] In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, a machine-implemented environmental air pollution modeling, reconstruction, and analysis system is provided. The system comprises: one or more processors; a memory storing instructions executable by the one or more processors; a communication interface configured to receive real-time observational data from one or more external air-quality data sources; a positioning module configured to determine a user location track a location trajectory over a specific duration; one or more data sources configured to provide microenvironmental data; and a man-machine user interface configured to receive user-specific data from and transmit analysis results to the user. Upon execution of the instructions, the one or more processors are configured to implement: a scale-adjustable air quality modeling and estimation engine configured to generate and reconstruct, for a user location, localized distributions of one or more air pollutants based on multi-scale air-quality model data; a real-time data assimilation and pollution field reconstruction engine configured to generate real-time localized concentrations of the one or more air pollutants by assimilating the real-time observational data with the localized distributions of the one or more air pollutants; and a microenvironment characterization engine configured to generate real-time microenvironmental concentrations of the one or more air pollutants from the microenvironmental data and the real-time localized concentrations of the one or more air pollutants.

[0009] In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, a machine-implemented air-pollution modeling, reconstruction, and analysis method is provided. The method comprises: receiving user-specific data and / or microenvironmental data; estimating and reconstructing spatially continuous localized distributions of one or more air pollutants at a user location; estimating respective real-time localized concentrations of the one or more air pollutants based on real-time observational data at the user location and the estimated localized distributions of the one or more air pollutants; and estimating respective real-time microenvironmental concentrations of the one or more air pollutants based on microenvironmental data at the user location and the estimated real-time localized concentrations of the one or more air pollutants.

[0010] The invention provides high-resolution environmental pollution field reconstruction with personalized, near real-time exposure estimation with an extended forecast horizon of up to 48 hours. By translating reconstructed environmental pollution data into user-specific exposure profiles and actionable information, the system supports informed decision-making aimed at reducing potential health impacts associated with air pollution exposure, representing a substantial advancement over static or generalized air quality information systems.Brief Description of the Drawings:

[0011] Embodiments of the invention are described in more detail hereinafter with reference to the drawings, in which:

[0014] In the following description, details of the present invention are set forth in exemplary embodiments. It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that modifications, including additions or substitutions may be made without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention. Specific details may be omitted so as not to obscure the invention; however, the disclosure is written to enable one skilled in the art to practice the teachings herein without undue experimentation.

[0015] FIG. 1 illustrates a block diagram of a machine-implemented environmental air-pollution modeling, reconstruction, and analysis system 1 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. The system comprises: one or more processors 10; a memory 20 storing instructions executable by the one or more processors 10; a communication interface 30 configured to receive real-time observational data from one or more external air-quality data sources; a positioning module 40 configured to determine location information and / or track a location trajectory over a specific duration; one or more data sources 50 configured to provide microenvironmental data; and a man-machine user interface 60 configured to receive user-specific data and / or microenvironmental data from the user, and to transmit analysis results to the user.

[0016] Upon execution of the instructions, the one or more processors 10 are configured to implement: a scale-adjustable air quality modeling and estimation engine 110 configured to estimate and reconstruct respective spatially continuous localized distributions of one or more air pollutants at a user location; a real-time data assimilation and pollution field reconstruction engine 120 communicatively coupled to the scale-adjustable air quality modeling and estimation engine 110 and configured to estimate respective real-time localized concentrations of the one or more air pollutants based on real-time observational data at the user location and the estimated localized distributions of the one or more air pollutants; a microenvironment characterization engine 130 communicatively coupled to the real-time data assimilation and pollution field reconstruction engine 120 and configured to estimate respective real-time microenvironmental concentrations of the one or more air pollutants based on microenvironmental data at the user location and the estimated real-time localized concentrations of the one or more air pollutants; a personal exposure estimation engine 140 communicatively coupled to the microenvironment characterization engine 130 and configured to determine the personal exposures to the one or more air pollutants based on the respective real-time microenvironmental concentrations of the one or more air pollutants.

[0017] The system 1 may receive a plurality of inputs including, but not limited to, meteorological information, emission inventories, terrain data, urban morphology data, road network information, traffic information, environmental monitoring station measurements, sensor network measurements, and other real-time environmental observations. The system 1 may further generate a plurality of outputs including, but not limited to, reconstructed high-resolution pollution concentration fields, real-time environmental analysis information, short-term pollution forecasts, pollutant concentration information for one or more microenvironments, and personal exposure estimates.

[0018] The scale-adjustable air quality modeling and estimation engine 110 receives environmental inputs and generates a baseline pollution concentration field and supports reconstruction of spatially continuous pollution distributions across the spatial domain. In one embodiment, the engine 110 includes: a multi-scale regional air quality modeling module 111 configured to progressively estimate regional distributions of the one or more air pollutants over nested multiple-scale spatial domains based on regional emission data and meteorology data; and an urban pollution dispersion module 112 coupled to the multi-scale regional air quality modeling module 111 and configured to estimate the localized distributions of the one or more air pollutants based on urban morphology data, pollutant emission rates of vehicles traveling around the user location and the estimated regional distributions of the one or more air pollutants.

[0019] The scale-adjustable air quality modeling and estimation engine 110 is configured to generate a baseline environmental pollution field and support reconstruction of spatially continuous pollution distributions across the multiple-scale spatial domains. In other words, the spatial resolution of the pollution concentration field may vary across the modeling domain. Coarser spatial resolution may be used for regional areas, while finer spatial resolution may be used in areas where stronger spatial gradients in pollutant concentrations are expected, such as near major roadways or dense urban environments. This variable spatial resolution enables the engine 110 to represent environmental conditions efficiently while allowing detailed representation of pollution variations where needed.

[0020] In one embodiment, the multi-scale regional air quality modeling module 111 may utilize meteorological data, emissions information, terrain characteristics, and urban structural information to simulate pollutant dispersion and support reconstruction of spatially continuous pollution distributions. Conventional environmental modeling systems typically operate at spatial resolutions on the order of approximately one kilometer or coarser.

[0021] In contrast, the present system 1 supports adjustable spatial resolution, enabling the modeling framework to transition between regional, urban, and street-level scales. For example, in dense urban environments, the module 111 can operate at meter-scale spatial resolution (down to approximately 2 meters) in areas where strong spatial gradients in pollutant concentrations occur.

[0022] Specifically, the multi-scale regional air quality modeling module 111 is further configured to generate and reconstruct the regional pollutant concentration distributions across the nested multiple-scale spatial domains with variable spatial resolutions that transition between regional, urban, and street-level scales, wherein the variable spatial resolutions include meter-scale spatial resolution in an area having a strong spatial gradient in pollutant concentrations.

[0023] The scale-adjustable air quality modeling and estimation engine 110 further includes: a dynamic traffic simulation module 113 configured to quantify a traffic flow in a road network around the user location based on individual travel behavior data; and a vehicle emission factor module 114 communicatively coupled between the dynamic traffic simulation module 113 and the urban pollution dispersion module 112, and configured to estimate pollutant emission rates of vehicles traveling in the road network based on the quantified traffic flow.

[0024] The dynamic traffic simulation module 113 is further configured to: encode the road network with a plurality of nodes and a plurality of links connecting the nodes; derive vehicle counts and average speeds of vehicles traveling in the road network by simulating individual trips for a typical weekday based on the received individual travel behavior data; and utilize the derived vehicle counts and average speeds of vehicles to quantify the traffic flow in the road network.

[0025] The vehicle emission factor module 114 is further configured to: receive the derived vehicle counts and average speeds of vehicles traveling in the road network from the dynamic traffic simulation module 113; and calculate pollutant emission rates of vehicles traveling in the road network based on the derived vehicle counts and average speeds of vehicles traveling in the road network, locally measured emission factors, vehicle classes and types of fuels used by the vehicles traveling in the road network.

[0026] The real-time observational data (or measurements) include: real-time (e.g., hourly) air quality concentration measured by a fixed site monitoring station or a sensor network proximate to the user location; real-time traffic data of the road network around the user location; and real-time street-level features of the road network. The one or more data sources 50 may include various sensing devices for measuring the real-time observational data. For example, the sensing devices may include cameras for capturing the real-time street-level features of the road network. In some embodiments, real-time traffic data may be obtained using traffic monitoring devices including, but not limited to, automated traffic cameras, video-based traffic analytics systems, radar sensors, inductive loop detectors, and other traffic sensing systems. These devices may be configured to estimate traffic counts, vehicle speeds, traffic density, and vehicle classifications.

[0027] The real-time data assimilation and pollution field reconstruction engine 120 is configured to perform model-observation data fusion to integrate real-time observational data with the model-generated environmental pollution field. In other words, the engine 120 receives model-generated pollution fields from the scale-adjustable air quality modeling and estimation engine 110 and real-time observational measurements, and produces an observationally constrained real-time environmental state (or fused environmental state) . The data assimilation process integrates model-generated pollution fields with observational data, such that the reconstructed pollution field is not derivable from observational data alone. As additional real-time observational data become available, the data fusion process can update the reconstructed pollution field in near real time, allowing the environmental field to be continuously updated as new environmental observations become available.

[0028] Because monitoring stations or sensor networks are typically sparse relative to the spatial domain, the engine 120 estimates the deviation between modeled and observed pollutant concentrations. These deviations are then propagated spatially across the modeling domain to support reconstruction of the pollution field to update pollutant estimates at locations across the spatial grid where direct observations are not available, thereby enabling sparse observations to influence pollution estimation across the full spatial field. Through this process, a limited number of measurement locations refine pollutant estimates across the entire environmental field.

[0029] Moreover, the engine 120 reconstructs a high-resolution spatial (down to street-level or meter-scale resolution) pollution field across the modeling domain based on the fused environmental state produced by the data fusion process. This reconstruction process allows information from a limited number of observational measurements to influence pollution estimates across the entire spatial domain, enabling pollutant estimation at a very large number of spatial locations, including locations where no direct observations are available. The reconstructed field therefore provides a spatially continuous representation of pollution conditions that supports real-time environmental analysis.

[0030] Specifically, the real-time data assimilation and pollution field reconstruction engine 120 is further configured to: integrate the real-time observational data with the localized distributions of the one or more air pollutants to obtain a fused environmental state; estimate a deviation between modeled concentrations and observed concentrations of the one or more air pollutants at measurement locations; propagate the estimated deviation spatially across a modeling domain to update pollutant estimates at spatial locations where direct observations are unavailable; and reconstruct, based on the fused environmental state, a high-resolution spatial pollution field across the modeling domain. In some embodiments, the model-observation data fusion and reconstruction processes may be implemented using one or more data-driven machine learning models, including but not limited to recurrent neural networks, long short-term memory models, feedforward neural networks, or spatial neural network architectures such as multilayer perceptrons, configured to learn relationships between modeled pollution fields and observational data. However, other statistical, physical, or hybrid modeling approaches may also be used.

[0031] In one embodiment, the engine 120 includes: a data-driven machine learning model 121 configured to adjust the estimated localized distributions of the one or more air pollutants based on real-time air quality concentration data measured by a fixed site monitoring station proximate to the user location to obtain one or more first estimated concentrations of the one or more air pollutants; and a spatial-multilayer perceptron model 122 communicatively coupled with the data-driven machine learning model 121 and configured to modify the one or more first estimated concentrations based on real-time traffic data and street-level features of the road network around the user location to obtain one or more second estimated concentrations. In one embodiment, the data-driven machine learning model 121 includes a long short-term memory model for adjusting the estimated localized distributions of the one or more air pollutants based on the real-time air quality concentration.

[0032] The real-time data assimilation and pollution field reconstruction engine 120 is further configured to: output the one or more first estimated concentrations as the respective real-time localized concentrations of the one or more air pollutants when a distance between the user location and the fixed site monitoring station is less than a threshold distance; and output the second estimated concentrations as the respective real-time localized concentrations of the one or more air pollutants when a distance between the user location and the fixed site monitoring station is equal or greater than the threshold distance.

[0033] The microenvironment characterization engine 130 is communicatively coupled with the real-time data assimilation and pollution field reconstruction engine 120 and the one or more data sources 50 and the man-machine user interface 60, and configured to analyze the microenvironmental data and generate the respective real-time microenvironmental concentrations of the one or more air pollutants based on the microenvironmental data. The measured microenvironmental data include: concentrations of pollutant gases, particle counts of particulate matter, indoor temperature, relative humidity and ambient pressure at the user location.

[0034] Specifically, the microenvironment characterization engine 130 is further configured to perform data-driven outdoor-to-microenvironment concentration estimation to derive indoor and microenvironment pollutant concentrations directly from an outdoor pollution concentration field reconstructed by the real-time data assimilation and pollution field reconstruction engine 120. As such, the present invention does not rely on detailed mechanical ventilation modeling of buildings, and therefore differs from systems that estimate indoor pollutant concentrations using mechanical airflow or ventilation models. In contrast to systems that estimate indoor pollutant concentrations using physical or mechanical ventilation models that require explicit representation of airflow, ventilation rates, or building-specific parameters, the present invention employs a data-driven approach that directly learns relationships between outdoor pollution fields and microenvironmental concentrations from observational or crowdsourced data, thereby reducing dependence on detailed building characteristics.

[0035] The personal exposure estimation engine 140 is communicatively coupled with the positioning module 40 and the microenvironment characterization engine 130. The personal exposure estimation engine 140 is configured to determine respective personal exposures to the one or more air pollutants based on the respective real-time microenvironmental concentrations of the one or more air pollutants and the tracked location trajectory.

[0036] The personal exposure estimation engine 140 is further configured to: integrate an indoor infiltration rate to the respective determined personal exposures if the user is in an indoor environment; or integrate an outdoor infiltration rate to the respective determined personal exposures if the user is in an outdoor environment. The indoor infiltration rate is dependent on a duration of air conditioner usage, a duration of air purifier usage and / or a duration of windows being opened.

[0037] The one or more processors 10 may be further configured to implement a personal health-response monitoring engine 160 coupled with the personal exposure estimation engine 140 and the man-machine user interface 60. The engine 160 includes a data integration module 161 configured to: establish a personalized exposure-to-health outcome database in a memory; and an exposure-symptom correlation module 162 configured to: analyze relationships between health symptoms and the personal exposures based on the personalized exposure-to-health outcome database; predict, based on the analyzed relationship, personalized health symptoms for the user in advance of upcoming pollution events or when the user selects a location with high exposure to pollutants to which they are sensitive; and transmit the predicted personalized health symptoms to the user through the user interface 60.

[0038] The personalized exposure-to-health outcome database may be established by integrating the determined personal exposures, outdoor air quality forecast data; local air quality data and health symptom data to establish a set of integrated data.

[0039] For example, the data integration module may integrate the daily input of Asthma Control Test (ACT) such that the system can enable asthma patients to make more informed decisions about their daily activities and medication management by combining personal symptom monitoring with real-time air quality data, resulting in more effective and personalized asthma control management.

[0040] The outdoor air quality forecast data may be augmented with big data. The health symptom data may be collected via crowdsourcing information about the occurrence of typical symptoms that could be caused by exposure to air pollutants as well as examples of symptoms such as wheezing, itchy eyes, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. The big data augmentation may be used to enhance the robustness and predictive capability of the system by incorporating large-scale, heterogeneous datasets. Such datasets may include, for example, historical air quality measurements, meteorological records, traffic data, satellite observations, mobility data, population activity patterns, crowdsourced environmental observations, and health-related datasets. The incorporation of such data enables improved model generalization and more accurate estimation of pollution fields and associated exposure risks.

[0041] The one or more processors 10 may be further configured to implement an air pollution forecasting and early warning engine 170 coupled with the real-time data assimilation and pollution field reconstruction engine 120 and the man-machine user interface 60.

[0042] The air pollution forecasting and early warning engine 170 is configured to: forecast concentrations of the one or more air pollutants over a short-term horizon (e.g. 48 hours) based on the real-time localized concentrations of the one or more air pollutants (i.e., environmental field) reconstructed by the engine 120; estimate respective future personal exposures of the user to the one or more air pollutants based on the forecasted concentrations of the one or more air pollutants; and generate an early warning when the respective future personal exposures satisfy a risk criterion. The user interface 60 is further configured to transmit the early warning to the user.

[0043] The engine 170 may perform forecasting by incorporating meteorological forecasts and other environmental inputs to estimate the evolution of pollution conditions over time. This capability enables the system to provide advance warning of deteriorating environmental conditions, allowing individuals, organizations, or public agencies to anticipate environmental risks and adjust activities accordingly.

[0044] In some embodiments, the air pollution forecasting and early warning engine 170 is further configured to generate an exposure alert for a bookmarked individual and transmit the exposure alert to a caretaker or family-member device when a current exposure level or a predicted future exposure level of the bookmarked individual exceeds a threshold.

[0045] FIG. 2 illustrates a flowchart of a machine-implemented air-pollution exposure modeling, reconstruction, and analysis method S200 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. The method S200 comprises the following steps:

[0046] S210: receiving user-specific data and / or microenvironmental data from the user;

[0047] S220: estimating respective localized distributions of one or more air pollutants at a location; wherein the location may include a user location unless otherwise specified.

[0048] S230: estimating respective real-time localized concentrations of the one or more air pollutants based on real-time observational data at the location and the estimated localized distributions of the one or more air pollutants;

[0049] S240: estimating respective real-time microenvironmental concentrations of the one or more air pollutants based on microenvironmental data at the location and the estimated real-time localized concentrations of the one or more air pollutants; and

[0050] S250: transmitting the estimated real-time microenvironmental concentrations to the user through a man-machine user interface.

[0051] In Step S220, the respective localized distributions of the one or more air pollutants are estimated by: progressively estimating regional distributions of the one or more air pollutants over nested multiple-scale spatial domains based on regional emission data and meteorology data; and estimating the respective localized distributions of the one or more air pollutants based on urban morphology data, pollutant emission rates of vehicles traveling around the location and the estimated regional distributions of the one or more air pollutants.

[0052] The pollutant emission rates of vehicles traveling around the location are obtained by:quantifying a traffic flow in a road network around the location based on individual travel behavior data; and estimating the pollutant emission rates of vehicles traveling in the road network based on the quantified traffic flow.

[0053] The traffic flow in the road network is quantified by: encoding the road network with a plurality of nodes and a plurality of links connecting the nodes; deriving vehicle counts and average speeds of vehicles traveling in the road network by simulating individual trips for a typical weekday based on the received individual travel behavior data; and utilizing the derived vehicle counts and average speeds of vehicles to quantify the traffic flow in the road network.

[0054] The pollutant emission rates of vehicles traveling in the road network are estimated by:receiving the derived vehicle counts and average speeds of vehicles traveling in the road network from the dynamic traffic simulation module; and calculating the pollutant emission rates of vehicles traveling in the road network based on the derived vehicle counts and average speeds of vehicles traveling in the road network, locally measured emission factors, vehicle classes and types of fuels used by the vehicles traveling in the road network.

[0055] The real-time observational data include: real-time air quality concentration measured by a fixed site monitoring station proximate to the location; real-time traffic data of the road network around the location; and real-time street-level features of the road network.

[0056] Step S230 further includes: adjusting the estimated localized distributions of the one or more air pollutants based on a real-time air quality concentration measured by a fixed site monitoring station proximate to the location to obtain one or more first estimated concentrations of the one or more air pollutants; and outputting the one or more first estimated concentrations as the respective real-time localized concentrations of the one or more air pollutants when a distance between the location and the fixed site monitoring station is less than a threshold distance.

[0057] Step S230 further includes: modifying the one or more first estimated concentrations based on real-time traffic data and street-level features of the road network around the location to obtain one or more second estimated concentrations; and outputting the second estimated concentrations as the respective real-time localized concentrations of the one or more air pollutants when a distance between the location and the fixed site monitoring station is equal or greater than the threshold distance.

[0058] In Step S240, the respective real-time microenvironmental concentrations of the one or more air pollutants are estimated by: measuring the microenvironmental data at the location; analyzing the microenvironmental data and generating the respective real-time microenvironmental concentrations of the one or more air pollutants based on the microenvironmental data.

[0059] In some embodiments, the methods S200 may further include: tracking a location trajectory over a specific duration; and determining respective personal exposures to the one or more air pollutants based on the respective modified real-time microenvironmental concentrations of the one or more air pollutants, the location and the tracked location trajectory.

[0060] The determination of the personal exposures may further include: integrating an indoor infiltration rate to the respective determined personal exposures if the user is in an indoor environment; or integrating an outdoor infiltration rate to the respective determined personal exposures if the user is in an outdoor environment. The indoor infiltration rate is dependent on a duration of air conditioner usage, a duration of air purifier usage and / or a duration of windows being opened.

[0061] The indoor infiltration rate is treated as a state-dependent factor I (t) relating indoor and outdoor concentrations, e.g., I (t) =Cin (t)  / Cout (t) , and operationally as I (t) =Ibase·fwin (t) ·fac (t)·fpur (t) , where the baseline infiltration and adjustment factors are parameterized from an empirical database built from extensive measurements in representative indoor microenvironments (rather than relying on a single fixed constant) . In Step S260, the determined personal exposures may be transmitted to the user through: displaying a total air pollutant exposure of the user traveling from point A to point B based on their location trajectory; and / or providing a breakdown of the air pollutant exposure of the user by activity or microenvironmental type within a given period.

[0062] In some embodiments, the methods S200 may further include: establishing a personalized exposure-to-health outcome database in a memory; analyzing, by one or more processors, relationships between health symptoms and the personal exposures based on the personalized exposure-to-health outcome database; predicting, based on the analyzed relationship, personalized health symptoms for the user in advance of upcoming pollution events or when the user selects a location with high exposure to pollutants to which they are sensitive; and transmitting the predicted personalized health symptoms to the user through the man-machine user interface.

[0063] The personal exposure information may be transmitted as a percentage of short-term added health risk (%AR) based on exposure to multiple pollutants. The calculation of %AR is used to determine the level of the air quality healthy index (AQHI) for communicating health risk from area-wide outdoor air pollution. Specific health information and advice may be provided to users based on ranges of %AR, similar to the current practice for AQHI.

[0064] In some embodiments, the method S200 may further include: forecasting concentrations of the one or more air pollutants over a short-term horizon based on the real-time localized concentrations of the one or more air pollutants; estimating respective future personal exposures of the user to the one or more air pollutants based on the forecasted concentrations of the one or more air pollutants; generating early warnings when the respective future personal exposures satisfy a risk criterion; and transmitting the forecasted concentrations and / or the early warnings to the user through the man-machine user interface.

[0065] In various embodiments, the present invention may be implemented as an application (app) in a mobile device that enables users to obtain personalized information regarding their exposure to air pollutants, associated health risks, and potential mitigation strategies. The app serves as a centralized communication hub between users and the scientific outputs generated by the present invention. The app may be designed to allow users to receive air quality data from a cloud server and display the interaction-based data on the active screen layer of their device's graphical interface.

[0066] The key air pollutants under monitoring by the present invention may include, but not limited to, Ozone (O3) , Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) , Sulfur dioxide (SO2) , and Particulate matter (PM) , including respirable suspended particulates (RSP or PM10) and fine suspended particulates (FSP or PM2.5) .

[0067] The personal exposure (PE) is defined as the accumulated short-term health risks over a specific duration and is calculated using the formula: PE = ∫ %AR (t) dt, where %AR (t) represents the short-term health risk at time dt, and dt represents the time spent in a specific environment. In various embodiments, the calculation of %AR may be based on daily hospital admissions attributed to the 3-hour moving average of hourly concentrations of the four major air pollutants.

[0068] The functional units and modules in accordance with the embodiments disclosed herein may be implemented using computing devices, computer processors, or electronic circuitries including but not limited to application specific integrated circuits (ASIC) , field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) , microcontrollers, and other programmable logic devices configured or programmed according to the teachings of the present disclosure. Computer instructions or software codes running in the computing devices, computer processors, or programmable logic devices can readily be prepared by practitioners skilled in the software or electronic art based on the teachings of the present disclosure.

[0071] Each of the functional units and modules in accordance with various embodiments also may be implemented in distributed computing environments and / or Cloud computing environments, wherein the whole or portions of machine instructions are executed in distributed fashion by one or more processing devices interconnected by a communication network, such as an intranet, Wide Area Network (WAN) , Local Area Network (LAN) , the Internet, and other forms of data transmission medium.
