Abstract

Various solutions for enhancements to speed up voice call setup over earth orbit satellite, narrowband internet of things (NB-IoT), or non-terrestrial network (NTN) are described. A user equipment (UE) may trigger a packet data network (PDN) connectivity procedure or a PDN activation procedure. A network apparatus may receive a non-access stratum (NAS) message for activating the PDN connectivity procedure or the PDN activation procedure from the UE. The UE may determine whether to indicate support of early or pre-activation of dedicated EPS bearer context to the network apparatus. The network apparatus may determine whether a condition is met. The network apparatus may perform a default evolved packet system (EPS) bearer context activation procedure to establish a default EPS bearer and perform a dedicated bearer establishment procedure to establish a dedicated EPS bearer in an event that the condition is met.

Description

METHODS AND APPARATUS FOR ENHANCEMENTS TO SPEED UP VOICE CALL SETUP IN MOBILE COMMUNICATIONSCROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED PATENT APPLICATION (S)

[0001] The present disclosure is part of a non-provisional application claiming the priority benefit of U.S. Patent Application No. 63 / 779,360, filed 28 March 2025, the content of which herein being incorporated by reference in its entirety.TECHNICAL FIELD

[0002] The present disclosure is generally related to mobile communications and, more particularly, to speed up voice call setup over geostationary earth orbit (GEO) , narrowband internet of things (NB-IoT) , or non-terrestrial network (NTN) with respect to apparatus in mobile communications.BACKGROUND

[0003] Unless otherwise indicated herein, approaches described in this section are not prior art to the claims listed below and are not admitted as prior art by inclusion in this section.

[0004] For current network implementations, users may take a long waiting time for dialing an IMS voice call over GEO satellite, NB-IoT, or NTN. The long waiting time may be caused by processing time for the session initiation protocol (SIP) registration and processing time for the SIP call setup. Excessive processing time may severely impact user experience and may even lead to significant delays on emergency calls.

[0005] Accordingly, how to design UE and NW operations to support the voice service with reduced call setup time has become an important issue for newly developed wireless communication systems. Therefore, there is a need to provide proper schemes to address this issue.SUMMARY

[0006] The following summary is illustrative only and is not intended to be limiting in any way. That is, the following summary is provided to introduce concepts, highlights, benefits, and advantages of the novel and non-obvious techniques described herein. Select implementations are further described below in the detailed description. Thus, the following summary is not intended to identify essential features of the claimed subject matter, nor is it intended for use in determining the scope of the claimed subject matter.

[0007] One objective of the present disclosure is proposing schemes, concepts, designs, systems, methods, and apparatus pertaining to speeding up voice call setup over GEO, NB-IoT, or NTN. It is believed that the above-described issues would be avoided or otherwise alleviated by implementing one or more of the proposed schemes described herein.

[0008] In one aspect, a method may involve a network apparatus receiving a non-access stratum (NAS) message for activating a packet data network (PDN) connectivity procedure or a PDN activation procedure from a user equipment (UE) . The method may also involve the network apparatus determining whether a condition is met. The method may further involve the network apparatus performing a default evolved packet system (EPS) bearer context activation procedure to establish a default EPS bearer in an event that the condition is met. The method may further involve the network apparatus performing a dedicated bearer establishment procedure to establish a dedicated EPS bearer in an event that the condition is met.

[0009] In one aspect, a method may involve an apparatus accessing a network over an earth orbit satellite via a narrowband internet of things (NB-IoT) non-terrestrial network (NTN) connecting to a core network. The method may also involve the apparatus triggering a PDN connectivity procedure or a PDN activation procedure. The method may further involve the apparatus determining whether to indicate support of an early activation of dedicated EPS bearer context or a pre-activation of dedicated EPS bearer context based on a network signaling, a system information block (SIB) message, a downlink radio resource control (RRC) or NAS message, or a configured information.

[0010] In one aspect, an apparatus may comprise a transceiver which, during operation, wirelessly communicates with a network node. The apparatus may also comprise a processor communicatively coupled to the transceiver. The processor, during operation, may perform operations comprising accessing a network over an earth orbit satellite via NB-IoT NTN connecting to a core network. The processor may also perform operations comprising triggering a PDN connectivity procedure or a PDN activation procedure. The processor may further perform operations comprising determining whether to indicate support of an early activation of dedicated EPS bearer context or a pre-activation of dedicated EPS bearer context based on a network signaling, an SIB message, an RRC or a NAS message, or a configuration during the PDN connectivity procedure or the PDN activation procedure.

[0011] It is noteworthy that, although description provided herein may be in the context of certain radio access technologies, networks and network topologies such as Long-Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Advanced, LTE-Advanced Pro, 5th Generation (5G) , New Radio (NR) , Internet-of-Things (IoT) and Narrow Band Internet of Things (NB-IoT) , Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) , Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) , beyond 5G (B5G) , and 6th Generation (6G) , the proposed concepts, schemes and any variation (s)  / derivative (s) thereof may be implemented in, for and by other types of radio access technologies, networks and network topologies. Thus, the scope of the present disclosure is not limited to the examples described herein.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0019] Detailed embodiments and implementations of the claimed subject matters are disclosed herein. However, it shall be understood that the disclosed embodiments and implementations are merely illustrative of the claimed subject matters which may be embodied in various forms. The present disclosure may, however, be embodied in many different forms and should not be construed as limited to the exemplary embodiments and implementations set forth herein. Rather, these exemplary embodiments and implementations are provided so that description of the present disclosure is thorough and complete and will fully convey the scope of the present disclosure to those skilled in the art. In the description below, details of well-known features and techniques may be omitted to avoid unnecessarily obscuring the presented embodiments and implementations. Overview

[0020] Implementations in accordance with the present disclosure relate to various techniques, methods, schemes, and / or solutions pertaining to enhancements to speed up voice call setup over earth orbit satellite, NB-IoT, or NTN. According to the present disclosure, a number of possible solutions may be implemented separately or jointly. That is, although these possible solutions may be described below separately, two or more of these possible solutions may be implemented in one combination or another.

[0021] The present disclosure aims to reduce the time needed or required for the call setup procedure (e.g., voice call setup) over an earth-orbit satellite, NB-IoT, or NB-IoT NTN (NB NTN) .

[0022] FIG. 1 illustrates an example scenario 100 of a communication environment in which various solutions and schemes in accordance with the present disclosure may be implemented. Scenario 100 involves a user equipment (UE) 110 in wireless communication with a wireless network (e.g., an LTE network, a 5G / NR network, an IoT network, an internet protocol (IP) multimedia subsystem (IMS) network, an NTN network, or a 6G network) consisting of an access network 120, a core network 130, and a satellite 140. The UE 110 may be a smart phone, a wearable device, an IoT device, and a tablet, etc. Alternatively, the UE 110 may be a notebook (NB) or personal computer (PC) inserted or installed with a data card which includes a modem and radio frequency (RF) transceiver (s) to provide the functionality of wireless communication. The access network 120 may be a 3GPP network (e.g., a public land mobile network (PLMN) , a stand-alone non-public network (SNPN) , an evolved packet core (EPC) network, a 5G network, or a 6G network) . The core network 130 may be an EPC network, a 5G core network (5GC) , or a 6G core network (6GC) . The satellite 140 may be a GEO satellite, a medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite, or a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite. In one embodiment, the access network 120 is connected to the core network 130 by means of the NG interface, more specifically to a user plane function (UPF) by means of the NG user-plane part (NG-u) , and to an access and mobility management function (AMF) by means of the NG control-plane part (NG-c) . The access network 120 may include network node 121, which may be connected to multiple UPFs / AMFs respectively for the purpose of load sharing and redundancy. The network node may be called a base station (BS) or a cell. In addition, the core network 130 may include other entities, such as a mobility management entity (MME) , an equipment identity register (EIR) , a permanent equipment identifier (PEI) , a centralized database (e.g., home subscriber server (HSS) , or unified data management (UDM) ) , a policy and charging rules function (PCRF) , a proxy call session control function (P-SCF) , a serving-call session control function (S-CSCF) , a session management function (SMF) , etc.

[0023] In one embodiment, the UE 110 may support IMS voice calls over NB-IoT NTN (NB NTN or IoT-NTN) via satellite 140 that connects to a core network 130. In one embodiment, the UE may be accessing the access network 120 via satellite 140 connecting to the core network 130. In one embodiment, the UE110 may be accessing the network over the NTN connecting to the core network 130. In one embodiment, the UE 110 may be accessing the access network 120 over an NB-IoT connecting to the core network 130. In one embodiment, the UE 110 may subscribe to a voice call service over NB-IoT NTN (NB NTN) via satellite 140 (i.e., earth-orbit satellite) connecting to the core network 130. In one embodiment, the UE 110 may subscribe to the voice call service via satellite 140. In one embodiment, the UE 110 may subscribe to the voice call service over the NB-IoT. In one embodiment, the UE 110 may subscribe to the voice call service over the NTN. For illustrative purposes, one network node (network node 121) and one UE (UE 110) may be described hereinafter. However, it is not intended to limit the network scenarios of the present disclosure.

[0024] For a user plane (UP) , a dedicated EPS bearer context activation and related RRC procedures may contribute to the time delay for the whole call setup time (CST) . The related RRC procedures may comprise an RRC reconfiguration (e.g., ActivateDedicatedEPSBearerContextReqeust) and an RRC reconfiguration complete message (e.g., ActivateDedicatedEPSBearerContextAccept) that contributes to the time delay. In some cases, it may introduce an additional 2~3.5 seconds delay. In the present disclosure, the time delay may be reduced in view of that the dedicated EPS bearer context activation can be pre-activated (as a "shell" dedicated EPS bearer) .

[0025] In one embodiment, the dedicated EPS bearer context activation may be performed before the call is initiated. In one embodiment, the dedicated EPS bearer context activation may be activated before a session initiation protocol (SIP) call setup procedure (i.e., before SIP INVITE) . In one embodiment, the dedicated EPS bearer context activation may be activated during an IMS PDN connectivity / activation procedure instead of during the SIP call setup procedure (i.e., after SIP INVITE) .

[0026] Accordingly, FIG. 2 depicts an example process 200 in accordance with an implementation of the present disclosure. The process 200 may proceed from step 210 to step 260.

[0027] In step 210, the UE may camp on a network node (e.g., eNB or gNB) that supports NB-IoT (GEO) satellite access. An IMS PDN connection may be established with both a default EPS bearer and a "shell" dedicated EPS bearer. Then, process 200 proceeds to step 220.

[0028] In step 220, a SIP Registration Procedure is performed (e.g., a mobile originated (MO) UE may perform an IMS registration procedure) . Then the UE may return to an IDLE mode (e.g., the MO UE may return to RRC_IDLE) . Then, process 200 proceeds to step 230.

[0029] In step 230, the user wants to dial a call. Then, process 200 proceeds to step 240.

[0030] In step 240, is the UE in an IDLE mode? If yes, process 200 proceeds to step 251; Otherwise, process 200 proceeds to step 252.

[0031] In step 251, the UE is in the IDLE Mode. Then the UE may enter a CONNECTED mode and perform a service procedure. The service procedure may include establishing an IMS PDN default data radio bearer (DRB) (i.e., the default EPS bearer) and a voice DRB (i.e., the dedicated EPS bearer) , wherein IMS signaling may be transmitted via the IMS PDN default DRB (i.e., the default EPS bearer) and IMS voice data may be transmitted via the voice DRB (i.e., the dedicated EPS bearer) . In some implementations, the IMS PDN default DRB may be established together with the voice DRB. Then, process 200 proceeds to step 260.

[0032] In step 252, a SIP Invite Message is sent directly over the IMS PDN default DRB when the UE is in the CONNECTED Mode. Then, process 200 proceeds to step 260.

[0033] In step 260, the SIP Invite procedure is initiated. At this stage, a voice dedicated DRB establishment or a dedicated EPS bearer establishment may not be needed during the SIP Invite procedure. Accordingly, at least one RRC reconfiguration procedure can be saved after SIP INVITE compared to the conventional call setup flow.

[0034] FIG. 3 is a signaling diagram depicting an example method 300 in which the UE uses an earth-orbit satellite access to utilize an early activation or a pre-activation of voice dedicated EPS bearer context during an IMS PDN connectivity procedure or an IMS PDN activation procedure in accordance with an implementation of the present disclosure. The method 300 may proceed from stage 310 to stage 392.

[0035] In stage 310, the UE is accessing a network over an earth-orbit satellite via NB-IoT NTN (NB NTN) connecting to a core network (e.g., the EPC, the 5GC, or the 6GC) , and the UE triggers an IMS PDN connectivity procedure or an IMS PDN activation procedure. In some implementations, the network may be a 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) network (e.g., a PLMN, an SNPN) , an EPC network, a 5G network, or a 6G network) . In some implementations, the earth orbit satellite may be a GEO satellite, a MEO satellite, or a LEO satellite. In some implementations, the core network may be an EPC, a 5GC, or a 6GC.

[0036] In another embodiment of stage 310, the UE may access the network via the earth-orbit satellite connecting to the core network and may trigger the IMS PDN connectivity / activation procedure. In another embodiment of stage 310, the UE may access the network over an NB-IoT connecting to the core network, and may trigger the IMS PDN connectivity / activation procedure. In another embodiment of stage 310, the UE may access the network over the NTN connecting to the core network, and may trigger the IMS PDN connectivity / activation procedure.

[0037] In another embodiment of stage 310, the UE may subscribe to a voice call service over NB-IoT NTN (NB NTN) via the earth-orbit satellite connecting to the core network and may trigger the IMS PDN connectivity / activation procedure. In another embodiment of stage 310, the UE may subscribe to the voice call service via the earth-orbit satellite and may trigger the IMS PDN connectivity / activation procedure. In another embodiment of stage 310, the UE may subscribe to the voice call service over the NB-IoT and may trigger the IMS PDN connectivity / activation procedure. In another embodiment of stage 310, the UE may subscribe to the voice call service over the NTN and may trigger the IMS PDN connectivity / activation procedure.

[0038] In some implementations, the UE may trigger the IMS PDN connectivity / activation procedure combined with an attach procedure. In some implementations, the IMS PDN connectivity / activation procedure may be standalone (i.e., activated after the attach procedure) .

[0039] In stage 310, the UE may indicate support of an early activation of dedicated EPS bearer context or a pre-activation of dedicated EPS bearer context to the network (NW) in an IMS PDN connectivity request message, an attach request message, or an evolved packet system session management (ESM) information response message.

[0040] In stage 310, the UE may determine whether to indicate the support of the early activation of dedicated EPS bearer context or the pre-activation of dedicated EPS bearer context based on parameter (s) via one or more of: - A network signaling; - A system information block (SIB) message (i.e., UE received Broadcasted (system) information (e.g., in SystemInformationBlockType1-NB, SystemInformationBlockType2-NB, SystemInformationBlockType3-NB, SystemInformationBlockTypeXYZ-NB) , etc. ) ; - UE received downlink RRC message; and - An indication in the previous UE received downlink NAS message; and - (pre-) configured information in the UE, e.g., - In the ME (e.g., in Management Object (MO) (e.g., NAS configuration MO, IMS MO, etc. ) ) ; and - In a universal subscriber identity module (USIM) (e.g., a USIM file) .

[0041] In stage 321, the NW may receive a NAS message for activating the PDN connectivity procedure or the PDN activation procedure from the UE. The NAS message may be a PDN connectivity request message (e.g., the IMS PDN connectivity request message) , an attach request message, or the ESM information response message and may include the support of the early activation of dedicated EPS bearer context or the pre-activation of dedicated EPS bearer context.

[0042] In stages 321 and 322, the NW may determine whether a condition is met, perform (or initiate) a default EPS bearer context activation procedure to establish a default EPS bearer in an event that the condition is met, and perform (or initiate) a dedicated bearer establishment procedure to establish a dedicated EPS bearer in an event that the condition is met.

[0043] In some implementations, the condition may comprise at least one of the following: (i) . the UE subscribes to a voice call service over a narrowband internet of things (NB-IoT) non-terrestrial network (NTN) via an earth orbit satellite connecting to a core network; (ii) . the UE subscribes to the voice call service via the earth orbit satellite; (iii) . the UE subscribes to the voice call service over the NB-IoT; (iv) . the UE subscribes to the voice call service over the NTN; (v) . the UE is accessing a network over the NB-IoT NTN via the earth orbit satellite connecting to the core network; (vi) . the UE is accessing the network via the earth orbit satellite connecting to the core network; (vii) . the UE is accessing the network over the NB-IoT connecting to the core network; and (viii) . the UE is accessing the network over the NTN connecting to the core network.

[0044] In some implementations, the network may be a 3GPP network (e.g., a PLMN, an SNPN, an EPC network, a 5G network, or a 6G network) . In some implementations, the earth orbit satellite may be a GEO satellite, a MEO satellite, or a LEO satellite. In some implementations, the core network may be an EPC, a 5GC, or a 6GC.

[0045] In another embodiment of stage 321, the NW may determine whether a first condition and a second condition are met, perform (or initiate) a default EPS bearer context activation procedure to establish a default EPS bearer in an event that the first condition is met, and perform (or initiate) a dedicated bearer establishment procedure to establish a dedicated EPS bearer in an event that the first condition and the second condition are met. The first condition may be one of the aforementioned (i)~ (viii) , the second condition may be one of the aforementioned (i) ~ (viii) ; however, the first condition may be different from the second condition.

[0046] In an implementation of stage 322, the NW may determine to use the early activation / pre-Activation of (Voice) dedicated EPS bearer context (e.g., due to checking the UE’s subscription and / or detecting the UE is accessing the PLMN over GEO via NB-IoT NTN connecting to EPC) and initiate an establishment of a "shell" Dedicated EPS Bearer Context for voice for future usage (i.e., used when the UE dials a voice call) .

[0047] In an implementation of stage 322, the NW may initiate a default EPS bearer context activation procedure and a dedicated EPS bearer context activation procedure at the same time for the UE and send an indication indicating that the dedicated bearer is used for voice (e.g., quality of service class identifier (QCI) is set to 1) to the UE.

[0048] In stage 330, the UE may accept both the default dedicated EPS bearer activation and the dedicated EPS bearer activation during the (IMS) PDN connectivity procedure or the IMS PDN activation procedure.

[0049] In stage 340, the RRC connection is released (e.g., due to no activity) .

[0050] In stage 350, the NW (e.g., an MME) may preserve the dedicated EPS bearer. In some implementations, if the RRC connection is released, the MME may preserve the context of the dedicated EPS bearer context for future activation when the UE reenters the CONNECTED mode (even if the QCI of this dedicated EPS bearer belongs to a guaranteed bit rate (GBR) QCI) . If the UE enters the CONNECTED mode again, the preserved dedicated EPS bearer context may be activated and used for the NW and the UE.

[0051] In stages 360 and 361, the user dials a voice call, and the UE may initiate a corresponding service procedure. Two DRBs, for both the default EPS bearer and the dedicated EPS bearer, are activated by the network during the service procedure with a single RRC reconfiguration procedure. In some cases, the user dials a voice call when the RRC connection is released.

[0052] In stage 370, the SIP call setup procedure may proceed without the need of activating the dedicated EPS bearer (DRB for voice) (i.e., No DRB adding related RRC procedures during the SIP call setup procedure) . Accordingly, some time (i.e., CST) can be saved.

[0053] In stage 380, proxy call session control function (P-CSCF) may analyze session description protocol (SDP) in an SDP answer and send an Authorize / Authenticate-Request message to PCRF with related service information (e.g., IP address, port numbers, information on media-type) . Then the PCRF may authorize the request (i.e., the request message) , identify the affected IP connectivity access network (IP-CAN) session (e.g., default bearer) that has been established, and initiate a Re-Auth-Request to a packet data network gateway (PGW) to initiate the creation of a dedicated bearer for voice with a related traffic flow template (TFT) .

[0054] In stage 380, the PGW may store parameters. In one embodiment, the PGW may store the related traffic flow template (TFT) but not trigger the dedicated bearer activation procedure (i.e., not sending CREATE BEARER REQUEST to a serving gateway (SGW) ) . The PGW may use the stored traffic flow template (TFT) to filter and identify DL voice packets. The PGW may steer those packets over the dedicated bearer associated with "indication that the dedicated bearer is used for voice" .

[0055] In stage 391, the UE may steer an uplink (UL) voice packet to the dedicated bearer with “Indication (indicating) that the dedicated bearer is used for voice” . The UE may filter and identify the UL voice packets based on the port number negotiated during the SIP call setup procedure and send these voice packets over the dedicated EPS bearer.

[0056] In stage 392, the NW (i.e., the PGW) may filter and identify voice packets from received DL voice packets based on the stored parameters (i.e., the stored traffic flow template acquired in stage 380) and may steer the DL voice packets to the dedicated bearer with “Indication (indicating) that the dedicated bearer is used for voice” .
