Description

Base Station and Communication Method

[0001] The present invention relates to a base station and a communication method in a communication system.

[0002] In 3GPP (registered trademark) (3rd Generation Partnership Project), in order to achieve further increase in system capacity, further increase in data transmission speed, and further reduction in latency in radio sections, studies are underway on a radio communication scheme called 5G or NR (New Radio) (hereinafter, this radio communication scheme is referred to as "5G" or "NR"). In 5G, various radio technologies are being studied to satisfy the requirement of reducing the latency in the radio section to 1 ms or less while achieving a throughput of 10 Gbps or more.

[0003] In NR, a network architecture including 5GC (5G Core Network) corresponding to EPC (Evolved Packet Core), which is the core network in the LTE (Long Term Evolution) network architecture, and NG-RAN (Next Generation - Radio Access Network) corresponding to E-UTRAN (Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network), which is the RAN (Radio Access Network) in the LTE network architecture, is under study (for example, Non-Patent Document 1).

[0004] Furthermore, various requirements are being studied for the next-generation 6G. For example, the requirements include ultra broadband communication, mission critical communication, ultra massive connection, universal coverage, intelligent connection, ubiquitous sensing, and the like.

[0005] To meet these requirements, the new concept aims for extensibility (e.g., making it more effective for future use), ease of operation, customizability (e.g., making it easier to operate), and sustainability (e.g., cost reduction, a more robust configuration, and resilience). Furthermore, guaranteed communication, ensuring a minimum level of performance at all times, is being considered.

[0006] Furthermore, to enhance mobility, functional enhancements are expected to be made to support cases where inter-central unit (CU) LTM (Lower layer Triggered Mobility) and DC (Dual connectivity) are performed while maintaining LTM (for example, Non-Patent Document 2).

[0007] 3GPP TS 23.501 V18.7.0 (2024-09)3GPP TSG-RAN Meeting #101 RP-232618, Bengaluru, India, 11-15 September 2023

[0008] With the introduction of 6G, it is anticipated that inter-RAT-LTM (Long-Term Modification) will be performed from 6G-RAN nodes to 5G-RAN nodes, or from 5G-RAN nodes to 6G-RAN nodes. In order to perform inter-RAT-LTM, it is necessary to perform measurement reports on other RATs.

[0009] This invention has been made in view of the above points, and aims to perform measurements for InterRAT (Radio Access Technology) LTM (Lower layer Triggered Mobility).

[0010] According to the disclosed technology, a base station is provided which includes a transmitting unit that sends a message to a network node for performing Lower Layer Triggered Mobility (LTM) from a first RAT (Radio Access Technology) to a second RAT, and a receiving unit that receives resource settings for LTM candidate cell measurement in the second RAT from the network node, wherein the transmitting unit transmits RRC (Radio Resource Control) reconfiguration, including resource settings for LTM candidate cell measurement in the second RAT, to a terminal located in the area of the first RAT.

[0011] According to the disclosed technology, measurements for InterRAT (Radio Access Technology) LTM (Lower layer Triggered Mobility) can be performed.

[0013] Embodiments of the present invention will be described below with reference to the drawings. Note that the embodiments described below are examples, and the embodiments to which the present invention is applied are not limited to those described below.

[0014] In the operation of the wireless communication system according to the embodiments of the present invention, existing technologies may be used as appropriate. However, such existing technologies include, for example, existing LTE, but are not limited to existing LTE. Furthermore, the term "LTE" as used herein has a broad meaning that includes LTE-Advanced, LTE-Advanced and later technologies (e.g., NR), or wireless LAN (Local Area Network), unless otherwise specified.

[0015] Furthermore, in the embodiments of the present invention, "configuring" wireless parameters, etc., may mean that predetermined values are pre-configured, or that wireless parameters notified from the network node 30 or terminal 20 are configured.

[0016] Figure 1 is a diagram illustrating an example of a communication system. As shown in Figure 1, the communication system consists of a terminal 20 (UE) and multiple network nodes 30. Hereafter, one network node 30 will be assumed to correspond to each function, but one network node 30 may implement multiple functions, or multiple network nodes 30 may implement one function. Also, the "connection" described below may be a logical connection or a physical connection.

[0017] The RAN (Radio Access Network) is a network node 30 having wireless access functionality, which may include a base station 10, and is connected to a UE, AMF (Access and Mobility Management Function), and UPF (User plane function). The AMF is a network node 30 having functions such as terminating the RAN interface, terminating the NAS (Non-Access Stratum), registration management, connection management, reachability management, and mobility management. The UPF is a network node 30 interconnected with the DN (Data Network) and having functions such as a PDU (Protocol Data Unit) session point to the outside, packet routing and forwarding, and user plane QoS (Quality of Service) handling. The UPF and DN constitute a network slice. In the wireless communication network in the embodiment of the present invention, multiple network slices are constructed.

[0018] AMF is connected to UE, RAN, SMF (Session Management function), NSSF (Network Slice Selection Function), NEF (Network Exposure Function), NRF (Network Repository Function), UDM (Unified Data Management), AUSF (Authentication Server Function), PCF (Policy Control Function), and AF (Application Function). AMF, SMF, NSSF, NEF, NRF, UDM, AUSF, PCF, and AF are network nodes 30 that are interconnected via interfaces based on their respective services: Namf, Nsmf, Nnssf, Nnef, Nnrf, Nudm, Nausf, Npcf, and Naf.

[0019] The SMF is a network node 30 that has functions such as session management, IP (Internet Protocol) address allocation and management for UEs, DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) functionality, ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) proxy, and roaming functionality. The NEF is a network node 30 that has the function of notifying other NFs (Network Functions) of capabilities and events. The NSSF is a network node 30 that has functions such as selecting the network slice to which the UE connects, determining the allowed NSSAI (Network Slice Selection Assistance Information), determining the NSSAI to be set, and determining the AMF set to which the UE connects. The PCF is a network node 30 that has the function of controlling network policies. The AF is a network node 30 that has the function of controlling application servers. The NRF is a network node 30 that has the function of discovering NF instances that provide services. The UDM is a network node 30 that manages subscriber data and authentication data. The UDM is connected to the UDR (User Data Repository) that holds the said data.

[0020] Figure 2 is a diagram illustrating an example of a communication system in a roaming environment. As shown in Figure 2, the network consists of a terminal 20 (UE) and multiple network nodes 30. Hereafter, one network node 30 will be assigned to each function, but one network node 30 may implement multiple functions, or multiple network nodes 30 may implement one function. Also, the "connection" described below may be a logical connection or a physical connection.

[0021] The RAN is a network node 30 having wireless access functionality and is connected to the UE, AMF, and UPF. The AMF is a network node 30 having functions such as RAN interface termination, NAS termination, registration management, connection management, reachability management, and mobility management. The UPF is a network node 30 interconnected with the DN, having functions such as external PDU session point, packet routing and forwarding, and user plane QoS handling. The UPF and DN constitute a network slice. In the wireless communication network according to the embodiment of the present invention, multiple network slices are constructed.

[0022] AMF is connected to UE, RAN, SMF, NSSF, NEF, NRF, UDM, AUSF, PCF, AF, and SEPP (Security Edge Protection Proxy).

[0023] SMF is a network node 30 that has functions such as session management, IP address allocation and management for UEs, DHCP functionality, ARP proxy, and roaming functionality. NEF is a network node 30 that has the function of notifying other NFs of capabilities and events. NSSF is a network node 30 that has functions such as selecting the network slice to which the UE connects, determining which NSSAIs are allowed, determining which NSSAIs are configured, and determining which AMF set the UE connects to. PCF is a network node 30 that has the function of controlling network policies. AF is a network node 30 that has the function of controlling application servers. NRF is a network node 30 that has the function of discovering NF instances that provide services. SEPP is an opaque proxy that filters control plane messages between PLMNs (Public Land Mobile Networks). In Figure 2, vSEPP is the SEPP in the visited network, and hSEPP is the SEPP in the home network.

[0024] As shown in Figure 2, the UE is in a roaming environment connected to the RAN and AMF in the Visited PLMN. The Visited PLMN and Home PLMN are connected via vSEPP and hSEPP. The UE can communicate with the UDM of the Home PLMN, for example, via the AMF of the Visited PLMN.

[0025] Furthermore, in an NG-RAN (Next Generation Radio Access Network), a gNB, which is a RAN node, may have an architecture separated into gNB-CU (Central Unit) and gNB-DU (Distributed Unit). One gNB-CU may accommodate multiple gNB-DUs, and one gNB-DU may accommodate multiple cells.

[0026] To enhance mobility, it is expected that LTM will be supported from the initial release of 6G. When 6G is introduced, a switchover will occur between 5G-RAT and 6G-RAT, requiring an inter-RAT handover, i.e., a handover from 6G to 5G or from 5G to 6G.

[0027] In the initial release of 6G, localized 6G cell coverage is expected, and frequent switching to 5G cells is anticipated. To improve the user experience, low-interruption-time inter-RAT handovers are required.

[0028] Therefore, in order to support InterRAT-LTM, we may also support InterRAT-L1 measurement reporting.

[0029] In the case of event-based L1 measurement reporting, you may define a new LTM event as follows:

[0030] New LTM event XX: The beam of the candidate or adjacent cell is better than the absolute threshold. New LTM event YY: The beam of the serving cell or PCell is worse than absolute threshold 1, and the beam of the candidate or adjacent cell is better than absolute threshold 2.

[0031] Within the Time To Trigger (TTT), if the new event is satisfied, the UE may trigger an inter-RAT L1 measurement report. For example, the UE may trigger an L1 measurement report for a 6G cell when connecting to a 5G base station. Alternatively, the UE may trigger an L1 measurement report for a 5G cell when connecting to a 6G base station.

[0032] In the case of periodic-based L1 measurement reporting, the UE may periodically provide inter-RAT L1 measurement reports. For example, when connecting to a 5G base station, the UE may periodically provide L1 measurement reports for 6G cells. Alternatively, when connecting to a 6G base station, the UE may periodically provide L1 measurement reports for 5G cells.

[0033] For example, when a UE connects to a 5G base station, the 5G base station may set the LTM-CSI (Channel State Information) resource configuration (LTM-CSI-ResourceConfig) for measuring 6G LTM candidate cells, or the LTM-CSI-ResourceConfig may be exchanged between 5G base stations and 6G base stations, or the LTM-CSI-ResourceConfig may be exchanged between 5GCs and 6GCs via inter-5GC and inter-6GC signaling. Alternatively, when a UE connects to a 6G base station, the 6G base station may set the LTM-CSI-ResourceConfig for measuring 5G LTM candidate cells, or the LTM-CSI-ResourceConfig may be exchanged between 5G base stations and 6G base stations, or the LTM-CSI-ResourceConfig may be exchanged between 5GCs and 6GCs via inter-5GC and inter-6GC signaling.

[0034] Figure 3 is a sequence diagram illustrating an example (1) of inter-RAT-LTM in an embodiment of the present invention. In step S103, the source 5G base station sends an RRC (Radio Resource Control) reconfiguration to the UE, including the 6G LTM-CSI-ResourceConfig. In step S203, the source 6G base station sends an RRCReconfiguration to the UE, including the 5G LTM-CSI-ResourceConfig. The UE may perform a 5G cell measurement based on the 5G LTM-CSI-ResourceConfig.

[0036] Figure 5 is a sequence diagram illustrating an example (3) of inter-RAT-LTM in an embodiment of the present invention. In step S301, the source 5G base station transmits a Handover required to the 5GC. In step S302, the 5GC transmits a Handover required to the 6GC via inter-5GC-6GC signaling.

[0037] In step S303, the 6GC sends a Handover request to the target 6G base station. In step S304, the target 6G base station sends a Handover request Ack (6G LTM-CSIResourceConfig) to the 6GC, which includes the 6G LTM-CSI resource configuration. In step S305, the 6GC sends the 6G LTM-CSI resource configuration (6G LTM-CSIResourceConfig) to the 5GC via inter-5GC-6GC signaling.

[0038] In step S306, the 5GC sends a Handover request Ack or Handover command (HO command) to the source 5G base station, which includes the 6G LTM-CSI Resource Config. In step S307, the source 5G base station sends an RRC Reconfiguration to the UE, which includes the 6G LTM-CSI Resource Config. The UE may perform a 6G cell measurement based on the 6G LTM-CSI Resource Config.

[0039] Figure 6 is a sequence diagram illustrating an example (4) of inter-RAT-LTM in an embodiment of the present invention. In step S401, the source 5G base station transmits a Handover required to the 6GC. In step S402, the 6GC transmits a Handover required to the 5GC via inter-5GC-6GC signaling.

[0040] In step S403, the 5GC sends a Handover request to the target 5G base station. In step S404, the target 5G base station sends a Handover request Ack (5G LTM-CSIResourceConfig) to the 5GC, which includes the 5G LTM-CSI resource configuration. In step S405, the 5GC sends the 5G LTM-CSI resource configuration (5G LTM-CSIResourceConfig) to the 6GC via inter-5GC-6GC signaling.

[0041] In step S406, the 6GC sends a Handover request Ack or HO command to the source 6G base station, which includes the 6G LTM-CSI Resource Config. In step S407, the source 6G base station sends an RRC Reconfiguration to the UE, which includes the 6G LTM-CSI Resource Config. The UE may perform a 5G cell measurement based on the 6G LTM-CSI Resource Config.

[0042] Figure 7 is a sequence diagram illustrating an example (5) of inter-RAT-LTM in an embodiment of the present invention. In step S501, the source 5G base station transmits an LTM configuration update to the target 6G base station. In step S503, the source 5G base station transmits an RRC Reconfiguration to the UE, including a 6G LTM-CSI-ResourceConfig. The UE may perform measurements of the 6G cell based on the 6G LTM-CSI-ResourceConfig.

[0043] FIG. 8 is a sequence diagram for explaining an example (6) of inter-RAT-LTM according to the embodiment of the present invention. In step S601, a source 6G base station transmits an LTM configuration update to a target 5G base station. In step S602, the target 5G base station transmits an LTM configuration update Ack including 5G LTM-CSI-ResourceConfig to the source 6G base station. In step S603, the source 6G base station transmits RRCReconfiguration including 5G LTM-CSI-ResourceConfig to a UE. The UE may perform measurement on a 5G cell based on the 5G LTM-CSI-ResourceConfig.

[0078] As a result of the above operation, when 6G is introduced, it will be possible to perform inter-RAT LTM with minimal downtime when switching between 5G-RAT and 6G-RAT, which is expected to contribute to a smooth transition from 6G to 5G.

[0079] In other words, it can perform measurements for InterRAT (Radio Access Technology) LTM (Lower Layer Triggered Mobility).

[0080] (Device Configuration) Next, an example of the functional configuration of the base station 10, network node 30, and terminal 20 that perform the processing and operations described above will be explained.
