Description

TITLELOCKING COLLAR AND METHODS FOR USING THE SAMEBACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0001] Field of the Invention: Locking systems for use with bottles or containers to allow the locking of a collar or a collar configured with a pump, closure, or other device to a bottle or container.

[0002] Description of Related Art: Bottles and containers are often fitted with a pump, closure, or other device to facilitate the dispensing of a product from the bottle or container. In many instances, a collar component mates with the pump, closure, or other device and also securely fits onto a bottle or container to retain the pump, closure, or other device with the bottle or container. For example, a pump may include a collar having a thread system on an interior of the collar configured to mate with a thread system on an exterior surface of a bottle neck such that the collar may be fitted to the bottle - with a portion of the pump inserted into the bottle - to retain the pump on the bottle to be used to pump product from the bottle through the pump.

[0003] While many collar configurations allow the collar to be backed-off or removed from the bottle or container, there are also systems in which the collar and bottle or container may include features to prevent the removal of the collar - and whatever it is holding - from the bottle or container without destroying the functionality of the collar and bottle. For instance, a collar may include threading and ratchet features that mate with corresponding threading and ratchet features on a bottle. As the collar is fitted to the bottle, the corresponding ratchet features may engage each other, preventing the collar from being removed from the bottle or being unthreaded from the bottle. In such cases, when a product is depleted from the bottle, the bottle, collar, and pump, closure, or other device being held by the collar on the bottle are disposed of.

[0004] In the hotel / motel industry - and in other markets - there is a push to reduce waste. One way to reduce waste is to eliminate the use of single-use products or individual use products found in hotel / motel rooms. For example, the single-use shampoo, conditioner, and lotion packages have been banned in some localities, requiring alternative solutions to be utilized. A common solution to replace such packaging is the use of larger-format bottles with pump dispensers to dispense soap, shampoo, conditioner, and the like in the bathrooms of hotels / motels. Such large-format packaging solutions often include a bottle having a pumpattached to the bottle by a collar. Because tampering with the contents of the bottle is undesirable, collars and bottles are designed for a single-use of the package contents. While the larger format bottle may last for a longer period of use versus the individual use packaging, the locked collar and bottle system prevents the refill of the bottles and results in the disposal of the packaging and, at times, significant unused product if the person checking the level of product in the bottle believes that the amount in the bottle is insufficient for use by the next guest.

[0005] To avoid the disposal of such packaging, and to allow refilling of the bottles and reuse of the pumps, bottle mounting systems have been configured to allow the bottles to be mounted with a locking feature that engages, covers, or otherwise prevents access to the collars and which holds the bottles. While such systems work and allow the refilling of the bottles, they are often messy and are more difficult to clean, creating sanitary concerns. Such systems, while tolerated and used, are not preferred and new solutions that are cleaner, more visually desirable, more secure, or more user friendly are desired.BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0006] According to certain embodiments of the invention, a locking collar is provided to securely attach a pump, dispenser, closure, or other feature to a bottle or container. The locking collar may be selectively lockable such that it can be locked to the bottle or container as desired or during attachment of a pump, dispenser, closure, or other feature to the bottle.

[0007] According to various embodiments of the invention, a locking collar includes a collar and a locking clip. The collar may include a lock opening into which the locking clip may be inserted. When the locking clip is assembled with the collar it may be retained in the collar by engagement of features on the collar and the locking clip. For instance, the locking clip may include one or more lock lugs that may engage with one or more collar lock retaining lugs to retain the locking clip in the locking collar or in a lock opening in the locking collar. The locking clip may also include a bottle retention arm configured to engage a feature on a bottle, such as a lug or bottle stop flange, such that the engagement or contact of the bottle retention arm with the bottle stop flange prevents removal of the collar from the bottle once assembled. The locking clip may be disengaged from the collar by use of a key to disengage the one or more lock lugs from the one or more lock retaining lugs, allowing movement of the locking clip and disengagement of the bottle retention arm with the bottle stop flange.

[0008] According to various embodiments of the invention, a locking collar may include other retention features used to retain the locking clip in the collar when the locking clip has been disengaged from the locking position. In other embodiments, the locking clip may be removed from the collar. In some embodiments, a locking clip may also be manufactured such that once disengaged from the collar, it may not be used again, requiring the use and assembly of a new locking clip with the collar before the collar and locking clip may be used as a locking collar again.

[0009] According to various embodiments of the invention, a locking clip of a locking collar may be disengaged by the use of a key. In some instances, the key may be inserted through a keyhole to disengage the locking clip. In other instances, a key may be inserted between components or features of the collar to disengage the locking clip. In other instances, a key may disengage a latching mechanism, for example, a magnet may move a magnetic latch to disengage the locking clip from the collar and allow removal of a locking collar from a bottle or container.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE SEVERAL VIEWS OF THE DRAWINGS

[0010] While the specification concludes with claims particularly pointing out and distinctly claiming particular embodiments of the present invention, various embodiments of the invention can be more readily understood and appreciated by one of ordinary skill in the art from the following descriptions of various embodiments of the invention when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which:

[0015] According to some embodiments of the invention, a locking collar 100 may include a collar 110 and a locking clip 200 as illustrated in FIG. 1. The locking clip 200 may be assembled with the collar 110 to form a sub-assembly in which the locking clip 200 is intended to be retained with the collar 110. In other embodiments, the locking clip 200 may be removable from the collar 110 such that the two parts may be separated.

[0016] A collar 110 according to various embodiments may include an upper deck 125 having an outer wall 120 extending away therefrom and an inner wall 130 extending away therefrom. As illustrated in FIG. 2, an upper deck 125 of a collar 110 may terminate at the location where the outer wall 120 begins to extend away from the upper deck 125. The outer wall 120 may be substantially cylindrical as illustrated or may be of another shape as desired. The outer wall 120 may be substantially perpendicular to the upper deck 125 or may slope away from the upper deck 125. An inner wall 130 extends away from the upper deck 125 in the same direction as the outer wall 120. The inner wall 130 may be substantially cylindrical and may include features to attach the collar 110 to a bottle 900 on an inner surface of the outer wall 130. For example, the inner surface of the inner wall 130 may include threads to fit to or engage with threads on a bottle 900 or bottle neck 910 or a bayonet connection configuration to allow the collar 110 to snap-fit onto a bottle 900 or bottle neck 910. The inner wall 130 may also be a noncircular or cylindrical shape, configured to mate with a bottle 900 or bottle neck 910. The collar 110 may also include an opening 126 through the upper deck 125 which may be smaller than the circumference of the inner wall 130.

[0017] According to certain embodiments of the invention, a lock opening 210 in the collar 110 is configured to allow the assembly of a locking clip 200 to the collar 110 to form the locking collar 100. In some embodiments, a lock opening 210 may be formed in a portion of the outer wall 120 of the collar 110 and a portion of the upper deck 125 of the collar 110 as illustrated in FIG. 2. In other embodiments, the lock opening 210 may be formed in only the outer wall 120. In still other embodiments, a lock opening 210 may be formed in the upper deck 125 and no part of the outer wall 120.

[0018] As illustrated in FIG. 3, a lock opening 210 in the outer wall 120 and a portion of the upper deck 125 exposes the inner wall 130 of the collar 110. One or more inner wall lock retaining lugs 132 may be configured, formed, or integral with an outer surface of the inner wall130. An inner wall lock retaining lug 132 may include one or more sloped surfaces extending away from and outward from the outer surface of the inner wall 130 of the collar 110. As illustrated, the slope may create a narrower portion of the inner wall lock retaining lug 132 at the top of the inner wall lock retaining lug 132 closest to the upper deck 125. As the inner wall lock retaining lug 132 slopes outward, a thicker or wider portion is formed at the end furthest from the upper deck 125. An underside surface of the inner wall lock retaining lug 132 may be flat or sloped and may be configured to engage a portion of a locking clip 200.

[0019] One or more outer wall lock retaining lugs 122 may be configured on an inner surface of the outer wall 120 below a bottom portion of the lock opening 210 in the outer wall 120 as illustrated in FIG. 2. The one or more outer wall lock retaining lugs 122 may be sloped away from the inner surface of the outer wall 120 such that the portion closest the lock opening 210 is narrow and widens as it slopes away from the lock opening 210 towards a lower portion of the outer wall 120. A bottom surface of the one or more outer wall lock retaining lugs 122 may be flat or sloped and may be configured to interact with a portion of the locking clip 200.

[0020] A locking clip 200 may be configured to fit into the lock opening 210 in such a manner that the locking clip 200 is retained in the locking collar 100 such that once assembled, the locking clip 200 and collar 110 may be used, shipped, or otherwise treated as a sub-assembly of a larger pump, dispenser, or other packaging system. For instance, in certain embodiments of the invention a locking clip 200 may be configured and shaped as illustrated in FIGs. 2 and 3. A locking clip 200 may include a top portion shaped to follow the curvature or shape of the collar 110 such that when the locking clip 200 is attached to the collar 110 and positioned in a configuration where the one or more outer wall lock retaining lugs 122 retain the locking clip 200, the outer surface of the locking clip 200 generally follows the contours of the collar 110.

[0021] A side view of a locking clip 200 according to certain embodiments of the invention may resemble the shape of a question mark or a “C” with a tail as illustrated in crosssection in FIG. 2. The locking clip 200 may include a top deck 202 transitioning to a wall 204 that is relatively perpendicular to the top deck 202. A bottom shelf 206 may extend away from the wall 204 in a perpendicular fashion that is parallel to the top deck 202. The bottom shelf 206 may include a top surface 232 and that top surface 232 may be relatively flat or of another shape such that it may engage or interact with the one or more inner wall lock retaining lugs 132 in certain configurations of the invention. A tail 208 may extend away from the bottom shelf 206in a perpendicular manner. One or more lock lugs 222 may extend away from the tail 208 towards an inner surface of the outer wall 120 of the collar 110. The one or more lock lugs 222 may include a sloped surface facing downward or towards a bottle 900 when assembled as part of a locking collar 100. The one or more lock lugs 222 may include an upper flat surface opposite the sloped surface. The flat surface may engage a flat surface of the one or more outer wall lock retaining lugs 122 to retain the locking clip 200 in a fixed position. When the locking clip 200 is positioned in a locked position, the one or more lock lugs 222 engage the one or more outer wall lock retaining lugs 122 to fix the locking clip 200 in a position relative to the collar 110.

[0022] A locking clip 200 may also include a bottle retention arm 245 extending away from the body of the locking clip 200. As illustrated, the bottle retention arm 245 extends downward, towards a bottle 900 when the locking collar 100 is attached to a bottle 900. The bottle retention arm 245 may include a vertically straight surface and a sloped surface opposite the straight surface. The sloped surface is configured such that as the locking collar 100 is mounted to a bottle 900 or bottle neck 910, the sloped surface may engage with, or contact, a bottle stop flange 945 adjacent the bottle neck 910 or near the top of the bottle 900. As the locking collar 100 is torqued onto a bottle 900 or bottle neck 910, the sloped surface of the bottle retention arm 245 of the locking clip 200 engages the bottle stop flange 945 and flexes, allowing the bottle retention arm 245 to pass over the bottle stop flange 945. However, once the bottle retention arm 245 has passed over the bottle stop flange 945, the locking collar 100 may not be torqued backwards off of the bottle 900 or bottle neck 910 because the flat surface of the bottle retention arm 245 engages with the bottle stop flange 945 and prevents further movement of the locking clip 200 and the collar 110 to which the locking clip 200 is attached. Thus, once the locking collar 100 has been attached to the bottle 900 or bottle neck 910 to a degree where the bottle retention arm 245 has engaged with and passed over the bottle stop flange 945, the locking collar 100 may not be removed from the bottle 900 or bottle neck 910 without removing the potential interaction of the bottle retention arm 245 with the bottle stop flange 945.

[0023] According to various embodiments of the invention, the collar 110 may also include a keyhole 139 in the outer wall 120 of the collar 110. As illustrated in FIG. 3, the keyhole 139 may be located below or adjacent to the lock opening 210. The keyhole 139, according to various embodiments of the invention, allows a user to insert a portion of a key 109into the keyhole 139 to interact with the locking clip 200. In various embodiments of the invention, the key 109 is configured such that when inserted into the keyhole 139, the key engages a portion of the tail 208 of the locking clip 200, flexing the tail 208 and disengaging the one or more lock lugs 222 from contact with the one or more outer wall lock retaining lugs 122. This disengagement allows the locking clip 200 to move within the space between the outer wall 120 and inner wall 130 of the collar 110 such that the locking clip 200 may be moved upwards until the top surface 232 of the bottom shelf 206 contacts a lower surface of the one or more inner wall lock retaining lugs 132. Upon such interaction or contact, the locking clip 200 may not be moved further upwards but is loose within collar 110. When moved into the loose position, or the position where the top surface 232 is stopped by the one or more inner wall lock retaining lugs 132, the bottle retention arm 245 of the locking clip 200 is raised above the bottle stop flange 945, allowing the locking collar 100 to be torqued, twisted, or otherwise removed from the bottle 900 because the bottle retention arm 245 no longer engages the bottle stop flange 945 to prevent such movement. In this manner, the locking collar 100, along with the pump, dispenser, closure, or other feature connected to the locking collar 100 or retained by the locking collar 100 may be removed from the bottle 900. The removal of the locking collar 100 allows the bottle 900 to be refilled.

[0024] To reset the locking clip 200, the locking clip 200 may be pushed downward or towards the opening of the collar 110 that goes over a bottle 900 or bottle neck 910 such that the sloped surface of the one or more lock lugs 222 of the locking clip 200 engage the sloped surface of the one or more outer wall lock retaining lugs 122, causing the tail 208 to flex and allowing the one or more lock lugs 222 to pass over the one or more outer wall lock retaining lugs 122 until the upper flat surface of the one or more lock lugs 222 engages the flat surface of the one or more outer wall lock retaining lugs 122, locking the locking clip 200 in place for a new use. The locking collar 110 may then be torqued, twisted, or otherwise re-engaged with the bottle 900 or bottle neck 910 to secure a pump, dispenser, closure, or other feature to the bottle 900.

[0025] According to various embodiments of the invention, a collar 110 may be produced through a conventional molding process. A locking clip 200 may also be molded using conventional molding processes and techniques. The collar 110 and locking clip 200 may then be assembled to form a locking collar 100 according to embodiments of the invention. During assembly, the locking clip 200 may be inserted into a lock opening 210 of the collar 110. Uponinsertion, the locking clip 200 is oriented with the bottle retention arm 245 of the locking clip 200 directed towards that portion of the collar 110 to be attached to a bottle 900 or bottle neck 910. As the locking clip 200 is inserted into the lock opening 210, the one or more inner wall lock retaining lugs 132 interact with the tail 208 of the locking clip 200, flexing the tail 208 such that it passes over the one or more inner wall lock retaining lugs 132. The one or more lock lugs 222 of the locking clip 200 then engage the one or more outer wall lock retaining lugs 122 to flex the tail 208 the opposite direction, allowing the one or more lock lugs 222 to pass over the one or more outer wall lock retaining lugs 122. After the one or more lock lugs 222 have passed over the one or more outer wall lock retaining lugs 122, the tail 208 flexes back into position and the flat surface of the one or more lock lugs 222 engages a flat under surface of the one or more outer wall lock retaining lugs 122 such that the locking clip 200 is retained in the collar 110 to form the locking collar 100. The assembled locking collar 100 may then be used as a subassembly in a larger assembly process to attach a pump, dispenser, closure, or other feature to a bottle 900 or bottle neck 910.

[0026] For example, a locking collar 100 according to embodiments of the invention may be molded and assembled and then used in a pump assembly process to produce a pump that may be fitted to a bottle 900 to dispense a product from the bottle 900. In such a process, the locking collar 100 may be assembled to hold a pump or to be able to secure a pump to a bottle 900. Processes for assembling pumps with collars for retention to a bottle 900 are known and such processes may be used with embodiments of the invention, wherein the use of a collar is substituted with the use of a locking collar 100 according to embodiments of the invention. Following the assembly of the locking collar 100 to a pump, the locking collar 100 may be used to attach the pump to a bottle 900. In most instances, the pump will be attached to a bottle 900 during a filling process wherein a bottle 900 is filled with a product and the pump is then aligned over the bottle 900 and seated onto the bottle 900 with a bottle neck 910 engaging with the locking collar 100. The locking collar 100 may be torqued, twisted, or otherwise connected to the bottle neck 910 and once the bottle retention arm 245 of the locking collar 100 has engaged and passed by a bottle stop flange 945 on the bottle 900, the pump is locked onto the bottle 900. In order to remove the pump from the bottle 900, the locking collar 100 must be unlocked using a key 109. The key 109 may be inserted into the keyhole 139 to engage the locking clip 200 and flex the tail 208 such that the locking clip 200 may be moved upwards or away from the bottle900 to disengage contact and interference between the bottle retention arm 245 and the bottle stop flange 945. Once disengaged, the pump may be removed from the bottle 900.

[0027] Removal of the pump allows the bottle 900 to be refdled. The locking clip 200 may be pushed back into the position in which it is retained in the collar 110 to form the locking collar 100. The pump may then be reattached to the bottle 900 and the locking collar 100 locks the pump on the bottle 900 until the key is used to again release the locking clip 200 to allow the locking collar 100 to be backed off of, or removed from, the bottle 900.

[0028] A pump system 800 utilizing a locking collar 100 according to various embodiments of the invention is illustrated in FIG. 4. As illustrated, a pump system 800 may include a bottle 900, a pump 700, and a locking collar 100 mated with the bottle 900 and connecting the pump 700 to the bottle 900. In some embodiments, the pump system 800 may also include a wall attachment 825 or surface attachment that mates with or connects to the bottle 900 and which may be used to mount the bottle 900 to a wall or a surface, for example, a shower or bath wall in a hotel room. Multiple pump systems 800 may be mounted to a wall to provide a user with options, such as body wash, shampoo, and conditioner, all in one, convenient location. The locking collar 100 may be used to lock a pump 700 to the bottle 900 and to allow selective removal of the pump 700 by unlocking the locking collar 100 so that the bottle 900 may be refilled or a new pump 700 and locking collar 100 may be attached to a bottle 900.

[0029] The use of a locking collar 100 according to various embodiments of the invention may be beneficial in a number of different markets. As described, the use of the locking collar 100 with pumps and dispensers in hotels and motels helps to prevent access to the bottles 900 and product in the dispensers, providing security and safety, while also allowing the proprietor of the establishment using the dispensers the ability to refill the bottles 900 as needed and reuse the pumps utilizing the locking collar 100. The ability to refill, reuse, and relock saves waste and provides additional security for the users of the system, preventing tampering and dilution of product contained in the dispensers.

[0030] While certain embodiments of the invention have been described and illustrated with respect to a pump such as a liquid hand pump as commonly known, the locking collar 100 of various embodiments may be used with trigger sprayers, healthcare dispensers, closures, and other devices that need to be securely attached to a bottle or a container. For example, a brand selling weed killer to be applied through the use of a trigger sprayer attached to a bottle maywish that the trigger sprayer cannot be easily removed from the bottle once attached. In such cases, a locking collar 100 according to embodiments of the invention may be used to secure the trigger sprayer to a bottle but to also allow the selective removal of the trigger sprayer if the key to the locking collar 100 is used to remove the trigger sprayer from the bottle. In this way, the bottle could then be refilled, or the trigger sprayer could be attached - with a locking function -to another bottle of weed killer to be used.

[0031] Furthermore, while various embodiments of the invention are illustrated with a keyhole 139 and a key 109, it is understood that the location of the keyhole 139, or location into which the key 139 is inserted, may be in a different location. For instance, in some embodiments, a keyhole 139 may not exist and the key 109 may be inserted from an underside of the locking collar 100 such that the key 109 fits between the bottle 900 and the outer wall 120 of the collar 110 to engage and release the locking clip 200. In other embodiments, a more elaborate key 109 may be used, for example, a metal or magnetic switch or latch may be built into the collar 110, the locking clip 200, or both such that a key 109 having a magnet or metal body may be aligned an moved in a given pattern to disengage a latch holding the locking clip 200 in place relative to the collar 110 and to allow the locking clip 200 to be released so that the locking collar 100 may be removed from a bottle 900.

[0032] A bottle 900 or container according to embodiments of the invention may include any conventional bottle 900 or container. In some instances, the bottle 900 may include a bottle neck 910 as commonly known, wherein the bottle neck 910 includes a bayonet connection system or a threaded connection system to allow the connection of a collar to the bottle 900 or bottle neck 910. A bottle 900 may also include one or more bottle stop flanges 945 or other structures adjacent to, or on, the bottle 900 or bottle neck 910 to engage with a collar to secure the collar to the bottle 900 as known.

[0033] According to various embodiments of the invention, a locking collar 100 may be made of plastic. In some instances, the locking collar 100 may be made of the same material as the bottle, as a pump it is supporting, or as both the bottle and the pump it is supporting. In this manner, the locking collar 100 may be recycled with a bottle and pump in the same recycling stream.

[0034] Having thus described certain particular embodiments of the invention, it is understood that the invention defined by the appended claims is not to be limited by particular details set forth in the above description, as many apparent variations thereof are contemplated. Rather, the invention is limited only be the appended claims, which include within their scope all equivalent devices or methods which operate according to the principles of the invention as described.
