[0030] Embodiments of the present invention reside primarily in a door handle assembly. Accordingly, the assembly, device, apparatus or method steps have been illustrated in the drawings, showing only those specific details that are necessary for understanding the embodiments of the present invention, but so as not to obscure the disclosure with excessive detail that will be readily apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art having the benefit of the present description.
[0031] In this specification, adjectives such as first and second, upper and lower, and the like may be used solely to distinguish one element or action from another element or action without necessarily requiring or implying any actual such relationship or order.
[0032] Words such as “comprises” or “includes” are intended to define a nonexclusive inclusion, such that an assembly, method, article, or apparatus that comprises a list of elements does not include only those elements but may include other elements not expressly listed, including elements that are inherent to such an assembly, method, article, or apparatus.
[0033] As used herein, the term ‘about’ means the amount is nominally the number following the term ‘about’ but the actual amount may vary from this precise number to an unimportant degree.
[0034] As used herein, the term ‘vertical’ may refer to the orientation relative to the present door handle assembly as a whole. However, it will be appreciated that the present door handle assembly can be utilized in other orientations.
[0035] As used herein, the term ‘integrally formed’ refers to a component or device that is formed of a single unitary material.
[0036] As used herein, the term ‘case’ may be used interchangeably with the term ‘housing’. That is, the case or housing forms an enclosure for the internal components of the door handle assembly.
[0037] The present invention is predicated on the finding that a door handle assembly can be utilized with a slidable actuation system. In this regard, the present door handle assembly alleviates one or more of the issues mentioned hereinabove. Particularly, the present door handle assembly allows for slidable actuation which may alleviate the issue with door handles being difficult to grasp and actuate.
[0038] Figures 1 to 3 show different views of an embodiment of the present door handle assembly. The door handle assembly (100) is adapted for slidable actuation. In an embodiment, the slidable actuation is vertical actuation. The door handle assembly (100) comprises a case (101) having a recess (102). The door handle assembly (100) further comprises an actuation button (103) adapted to slide vertically in the recess (102). It will be appreciated that the door handle assembly need not necessarily require the recess. Furthermore, the door handle assembly (100) comprises an actuation assembly (110) that is adapted to engage the actuation button (103) (mentioned in more detail hereinafter). The door handle assembly (100) further comprises a door latch (not shown) and a latch assembly (not shown) connected thereto. Actuation or sliding of the actuation button (103) in the vertical direction leads to retraction of the latch and the latching mechanism.
[0039] Shown in Figure 4 is an embodiment of the present door handle assembly with the parts of the case removed. It should be noted that some of the components thereof have been omitted for descriptive purposes. The door handle assembly (100) comprises an actuation assembly (110). The actuation assembly (110) comprises a combination gear (120) and a latch gear (130). The combination gear (120) suitably meshes or is configured to interact with the latch gear (130). The actuation assembly (110) may further comprise an idler gear (140, mentioned in more detail hereinafter).
[0040] An embodiment of the combination gear (120) is shown in Figure 9. The combination gear (120) comprises a pivot point (121) in which the combination gear (120) may pivot about. In this regard, the pivot point (121) suitably is adapted to houseor receive an e-clip. That is, the combination gear is configured to pivot and / or rotate about an axle or spline received in the pivot point (121). The combination gear (120) comprises a first set of teeth (122) and a second set of teeth (123). The first set of teeth (122) is angularly offset from the second set of teeth (123). In one embodiment, the first set of teeth (122) comprises one or more teeth. In the embodiment shown, the first set of teeth (122) comprises three teeth. The second set of teeth (123) comprises one or more teeth. In the embodiment shown, the second set of teeth (123) comprises three teeth. In one embodiment, the combination gear (120) is integrally formed.
[0041] As shown the first set of teeth (122) is located at a greater distance to the pivot point (123) than the distance between the second set of teeth (123) and the pivot point (123). The first set of teeth (122) is adapted to engage a linear gear (174, shown in Figure 13a) on an interior wall of the actuation button (103). The teeth of the lineargear are orientated internally facing from the interior wall. The second set of teeth (123) is adapted to engage the latch gear (130). The combination gear and linear gear provides balanced transfer of motion from linear movement to rotational movement. That is, linear movement of the button is converted to rotational (partial rotation) movement in the combination gear.
[0042] An embodiment of the latch gear (130) is shown in Figure 10. The latch gear (130) comprises a first gear (131) having a first set of latching teeth (132). The latch gear (130) further comprises a latch lever (135) (mentioned in more detail hereinafter). The latch gear (130) is suitably connected to the latch lever (135) by an axle (139). In one embodiment, the first gear (131) is fixedly connected to the latch lever (135) by the axle (139). In another embodiment, the axle (139) comprises one or more extension(s) therefrom which are received in a complementary aperture in the first gear (131) and a complementary aperture in the latching lever (135) such that rotational movement from either component is transferred to the other. In one embodiment, the first gear (131) is adapted to mesh or is configured to interact with the second set of teeth (123) of the combination gear (120).
[0043] The first set of latching teeth (132) suitably comprises one or more teeth. In the embodiment shown, the first set of latching teeth (132) comprises three teeth. The first set of latching teeth (132) are adapted to engage or mesh with the second set of teeth (123) of the combination gear (120). As the first set of latching teeth (132) mesh with second set of teeth (123) this causes the latching latch lever (135) to rotate. The latching lever (135) is adapted to engage a latch tail.
[0044] The latch gear (130) may further comprise an elongate member (138) adapted to be received in or with the latching lever (135). In one embodiment, the latching lever (135) comprises an indent or recess that is adapted to receive the elongate member (138). In an embodiment, the latching lever (135) is provided with a C-channel. One or both of the ends of the elongate member (138) may be provided with a circumferential indent adapted to engage the latching lever (135). This more securely retains the elongate member (138) with the latching lever (135). In one embodiment, the elongate member (138) is held in place by the C-channel. The C-channel is configured such that rotation of the latch gear (130) results in horizontal movement of the elongate member (138) in the latching lever (135). In one embodiment, the elongate member (138) moves in the C-channel from one end to the other as rotation is affected. The elongate member (138) is adapted to engage the latch tail (mentioned in more detail hereafter). The latch gear and the combination gear provides balanced transfer of motion from rotational movement to horizontal movement. The latching lever (135) may be provided with a first connecting portion adapted to secure another first connecting portion of an opposing latching lever (135) mentioned in more detail hereinafter. For instance, the first connecting portion may be a male connecting portion or a female connecting portion. In one embodiment, a pin may be inserted therein to securely connect them together.
[0045] Although mentioned as vertical and horizontal motion, it will be appreciated that the present invention can be utilized with a vertical movement input or a horizontal movement input, and that the output will be horizontal movement output or a vertical movement output, respectively. The person skilled in the art will appreciate that a modification in orientation of the assembly can be utilized to achieve this versatility.
[0046] Shown in Figure 16 is an embodiment of a latch gear housing (190). The latch gear housing (190) is adapted to connect the latch gear (130) to the latch center plate (160, mentioned in more detail hereinafter). In this regard, the latch gear housing (190) comprises the axle (139). The latch gear housing (190) maintains the position of the axle (139) and ensures that rotation thereof is in the desired position. The latch gear housing (190) further comprises an extension or elongate member (191) adapted to be received in an aperture (163) of the latch center plate (160) to ensure the location thereof relative to the other components of the door handle assembly (100). In one embodiment, the latch gear housing (190) is integrally formed. The latch gear housing (190) further comprises a stop (192). The stop (192) prevents the latch gear (135) from rotating beyond a certain point.
[0047] The door handle assembly (100) further comprises a latching assembly (150). The latching assembly (150) comprises a latch intermediate portion (152) connecting a latch tail (151) to a latch head (153). In another embodiment, the latch tail (151), the latch intermediate portion (152), the latch head (153) and hook (154, mentioned hereinafter) are in a fixed rigid configuration. In this regard, the latch intermediate portion (152) and the hook (154) are configured to be offset. In one embodiment, the latch tail (151), the latch intermediate portion (152), the latch head (153) and hook (154) are configured to form a ‘bend’. In one embodiment, the latch intermediate portion (152) is pivotable and / or rotationally connected to the latch head (153). As shown, the latch tail (151) comprises a portion adapted to engage the latching lever (135). In this regard, movement of the latching lever (135) affects movement of the latch tail (151) and thus latch head (153) to move from an extended to a retracted position.
[0048] The latching tail (151) comprises a hook (154) adapted to engage the elongate member (138). As the first gear is rotated (131), this causes the latching lever (135) to also rotate by virtue of the axle (139). This movement results in driving the elongate member (138) which in turn pulls the latching assembly (150) using the hook (154). This causes the remaining portion of the latch assembly to move and this leads the latch head (153) to move from an extended position to a retract position.
[0049] In one embodiment, the door handle assembly further comprises a latch head channel (not shown). The latch head channel is suitably an elongate member having a bore therein. The latch head channel is suitably connected or affixed to the door itself. The latch channel is adapted to guide the latch head in the extended position to the retracted position (or vice versa) such that the latch head enters a recess in a door jamb or similar. Alternatively, or similarly, a side of the case may comprise an aperture adapted to guide the latch head. The intermediate portion (152) and components thereof form a bend such that the hook (154) can be offset. This allows for clearance to ensure the actuation assembly functions whilst alleviating the problem of jamming.
[0050] The door handle assembly (100) further comprises a latch center plate. Shown in Figure 14 is an embodiment of a latch center plate (160). The latch center plate (160) comprises a body (160) having one or more apertures therethrough. The one or more apertures include a latch gear aperture (162) adapted to receive the axle (139) of the latch gear (130), or securing apertures adapted to secure the complementary protrusions of the housing. The securing apertures ensure that the latch center plate is securely connected to the case. The latch center plate (160) also allowsfor ease of installment. In this regard, the latch center plate (160) allows for the latch gear (130) to be attached on both sides prior to the case being connected. This means that only one set of teeth needs to be meshed when the second half of the case closes onto the door. The latch center plate (160) also provides support for the latch tail (151) to slide along.
[0051] Shown in Figure 13 and Figure 13a are an embodiment of an actuation button (103). The button (103) comprises a body (170). The body (170) comprises a top surface (171) adapted to be pushed or engaged by a user. The body (170) further comprises one or more portions adapted to engage a biasing device. The biasing device are resilient members that aid the actuation assembly in returning to the start position or closed or lock position. In the embodiment shown, the body (170) comprises extensions (172) adapted to engage a biasing device. In one embodiment, the body (170) comprises a plurality of extensions, each adapted to engage a respective biasing device. Non-limiting examples of the biasing device include a resilient member or spring. The biasing device is adapted to push against or engage the case or the latch center plate, such that resistance is provided when pressing the actuation button (103).
[0052] The actuation button (103) further comprises a linear gear (174) connected and / or affixed to the interior wall of the button (103). As mentioned above, the linear gear (174) is adapted to engage with the first set of teeth (122) of the combination gear (120) and provides balance transfer motion form a linear motion to rotational movement. In an embodiment, the linear motion is vertical linear motion.
[0053] It will be appreciated that pressing the actuation button (103) will pull the latching assembly into the retract position such that the latch head is retracted from a recess in a door jamb or similar. Upon releasing or ceasing a pushing force on the actuation button (103), the biasing device(s) will push the actuation button upwardly and this will push the latching assembly into the extended position such that the latch head extends into the doorjamb or similar.
[0054] The actuation button (103) may further comprise guiding protrusions (173) extending from a side thereof. The guiding protrusions (173) are adapted to be received in channels (181) of a center plate (180). In the embodiment shown, the actuation button (103) comprises a plurality of guiding protrusions. In the embodiment shown, the actuation button (103) comprises a pair of guiding protrusion (173).
[0055] The door handle assembly (100) may further comprise a center plate (180). The case (101) may suitably further comprise a center plate (180). Shown in Figure 15 is an embodiment of the center plate (180). In one embodiment, the center plate (180)comprises one or more channels therein. In the embodiment shown, the center plate (180) comprises a pair of channels (181) adapted to receive a respective guiding protrusion (173). The center plate (180) serves a number of purposes. In this regard, the center plate (180) by virtue of the channels (181) ensures the movement of the button is in the desired direction. The center plate (180) also provides support and strength to the overall assembly. Furthermore, the center plate (180) also provides a barrier between the two sides of the door handle. The center plate (180) is stationary or not movable relative to the case. The center plate also provides a stopping point for the actuation by creating a bump stop for the button and a fixed return point.
[0056] In one embodiment, the door handle assembly comprises an actuation button (103) on either side of the center plate (180) such that the door handle assembly can be actuated on either side thereof. In this regard, it will be appreciated that the handle assembly may comprise a mirror image of the assembly discussed hereinabove. However, in a preferred embodiment, to increase the compactness of the assembly itself the actuation assembly may further comprise an additional idler gear that interacts, meshes and / or couples with the latch gear (130) and the combination gear (120). The idler gear (140) allows for the orientation of the combination gear (120) to be in the same orientation whilst also allowing actuation of the actuation assembly without being in different orientations. That is, the idler gear is required to shift the rotational direction. This allows for a more compact configuration.
[0057] Figure 11 shows an embodiment of an idler gear. The idler gear (140) comprises a first idler gear (141) having a first set of idler teeth (142) and a second idler gear (143) having a second set of idler teeth (144). The first idler gear (141) and second idler gear (143) are connected by an axle (145). In one embodiment, the first idler gear (141) is fixedly connected to the second idler gear (143) by the axle (145). In another embodiment, the axle (145) comprises one or more extension therefrom which are received in a complementary aperture in the first idler gear (141) and a complementary aperture in the second idler gear (143) such that rotational movement from either component is transferred to the other. As the first idler gear (141) is rotated this causes the second idler gear (143) to also rotate. As the first idler gear is connected to or meshes with the combination gear (120), actuation thereof will lead to rotation of the first idler gear (141) and this will lead to rotation of the second idler gear (143) which is lead to rotation of the latch gear (130). In a preferred embodiment, the first idler gear is the same as the second idler gear. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the first idler gear is superimposed on the second idler gear.
[0058] In this embodiment, the elongate member (138) is connected to each of the two latching levers (135) such that actuation of any one of the actuation buttons will lead to the rotation of the latching lever (135). This allows for the door handle assembly to be actuated by either side thereof.
[0059] Shown in Figures 17-22 are different views and components of the present door handle assembly. The door handle assembly (200) is adapted for slidable actuation. In an embodiment, the slidable actuation is vertical actuation. The door handle assembly (200) suitably comprises a case (201). The case (201) may suitably have a recess (202). The door handle assembly (200) further comprises an actuation button (203) adapted to slide relative to the case (201). Suitably, the actuation button (203) is adapted to slide in the recess (202). It will be appreciated that the door handle assembly need not require the recess. The door handle assembly (200) further comprises an actuation assembly (210) that is adapted to engage the actuation button (203). The door handle assembly (200) further comprises a latch assembly connected thereto. Actuation or sliding of the actuation button (203) in the vertical direction leads to retraction of the latching mechanism.
[0060] It should be noted that some of the components of the present door handle assembly have been omitted for descriptive purposes. The door handle assembly (200) comprises an actuation assembly (210). The actuation assembly (210) comprises a combination gear (220) and a latch gear (230). [0061] An embodiment of the combination gear (220) is shown in Figure 26. The combination gear (220) provides a pivot point (221) in which the combination gear (220) may pivot about. That is, the combination gear is configured to pivot and / or rotate about an axle or spline received in the pivot point (221). The combination gear (220) comprises a first set of teeth (222) and a second set of teeth (223). The first set of teeth (222) is angularly offset from the second set of teeth (223). In one embodiment, the first set of teeth (222) comprises one or more teeth. In the embodiment shown, the first set of teeth (222) comprises three teeth. The second set of teeth (223) comprises one or more teeth. In the embodiment shown, the second set of teeth (223) comprises three teeth. In one embodiment, the combination gear (220) is integrally formed.
[0062] As shown, the first set of teeth (222) is located at a greater distance to the pivot point (221) than the distance between the second set of teeth (223) and the pivot point (221). The first set of teeth (222) is adapted to engage a linear gear (274, shown inFigure 19) of the actuation button (203). The teeth of the lineargear (274) are orientated internally facing. The second set of teeth (223) is adapted to engage the latch gear (230). The combination gear and linear gear provides balanced transfer of motion from linear movement to rotational movement. That is, linear movement of the button is converted to rotational (partial rotation) movement in the combination gear.
[0063] In one embodiment, the combination gear (220) comprises an offset portion (225). In this embodiment, the portion comprising the pivot point (221) and the first set of teeth (222) are in substantially the same plane, and the offset portion (225) and the second set of teeth (223) are offset relative to the first set of teeth (222) and a portion comprising the pivot point (221). Rotation from either the combination gear (220) or the latch gear (230) is transferred to the other. When either the combination gear or latch gear is rotated, this causes the idler gear to rotate and leads to rotation of the other of the combination gear or latch gear. As the idler gear is connected to or meshes with the combination gear (220), actuation thereof will lead to rotation of the idler gear (240) and this will lead to rotation of the latch gear (230).
[0086] In an embodiment, the latch gear (240) further comprises a biasing device attachment portion (246). The biasing device attachment portion (246) is suitably a threaded blind hole adapted to receive a biasing device. In an embodiment, the first body portion (203a) comprises the male attachment portion. In the embodiment shown, the male attachment portion is or comprises protrusion (283a). In an embodiment, the second body portion (203b) comprises the female attachment portion. In certain embodiments, the female attachment portion comprises an aperture (283b) adapted to receive a respective protrusion (283a). It is envisaged that the channels (281) of the center plate (280) allow for clearance within the housing to conceal the privacy pin (273) from an external viewpoint when the actuation button is in the open configuration with the latch head retracted at its further point.
[0091] In an embodiment, the door handle assembly may further comprise a locking or privacy assembly (270). The locking or privacy assembly (270) comprises a first privacy body (271a) and a second privacy body (271b). Each of the first privacy body (271a) and the second privacy body (271b) comprise one or more attachment portions (272a, 272b). The pivotable connection is provided by an elongate member or axle through one of the apertures (272a or 272b). The fixed connection is provided by an elongate member or fastening memberthrough both of the apertures (272a or 272b). It will be appreciated that each body portion (203a, 203b) comprise aligned apertures for respective apertures (272a, 272b) When in the open configuration, the privacy assembly prevents the actuation of actuation button (203) by rotating and protruding into the path of the respective case portion (201a or 201b). This impedes the button from being actuated. The pivotable connected privacy body portion is connected by only a single attachment portion (either 272a, 272b) which defines the point in which the respective body pivots or rotates about. This allows for a user to push the pivotable connected privacy body to actuate the privacy pin (273). When actuated, the privacy pin is pushed further in. One or both of the first privacy body (271a) and the first privacy body (271b) comprise an aperture (274a, 274b) adapted to receive the privacy pin (273). This allows for the privacy assembly to be suitable for both left andright-handed hinge doors and interchangeable for either side. The privacy pin (273) is adapted or configured to connect the first privacy body (271a) and the second privacy body (271b). This allows for the pin to extrude through the aperture (274b) and creates a safety button that can open the privacy assembly in case of an emergency. It should be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the first privacy body (271a) and the second privacy body (271b) are a copy and can be interchanged by moving the privacy pins to opposing sides and rotating them. In a preferred embodiment, the privacy pin (273) is attached to, or configured to abut on the first privacy body (271a) or the second privacy body (271b). In this embodiment, the distal end of the privacy pin (273) is adapted to engage the aperture of the other privacy body. This privacy body is fixedly connected to the respective body portion (203a or 203b). When in the engaged position or configuration, the actuation button (203) cannot be actuated. In an embodiment, the aperture (274a, 274b) is suitably a bore therethrough. This allows for the privacy pin (273) to be disengaged from the other side as a safety mechanism. It will be appreciate that the pivotable privacy body is preferably the internal side (e.g., room that requires privacy, e.g., bedroom) of the handle assembly and the fixedly attached privacy body is preferably the external side of the handle assembly (e.g., living or communal area). It will also be appreciated that the privacy pin (273) suitably extends through the first body portion (203a) and the second body portion (203b). In one embodiment, the privacy pin is formed of a first pin member (273a) adapted to removable secure to a second pin member (273b). In an embodiment, the first pin member (273a) is a discrete component to the second pin member (273b). In this embodiment, the first pin member (273a) abuts the second pin member (273b).
