Description

HANDLING CONNECTOINS IN MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORKSTechnical Field

[0001] Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to the field of telecommunication and in particular, to methods and devices for handling connections in mobile communication networks to improve connectivity. Background

[0002] This section introduces aspects that may facilitate better understanding of the present disclosure. Accordingly, the statements of this section are to be read in this light and are not to be understood as admissions regarding the presence or absence of elements in the prior art.

[0003] Connectivity in mobile networks, particularly mobility, plays a vital role in ensuring seamless communication in today's highly interconnected world. As a mobile device, also known as user equipment (UE) , moves through different locations within a mobile network, maintaining a stable and high-quality connection becomes essential, especially for modern applications such as autonomous vehicles, real-time video streaming, critical IoT systems, etc. To achieve this, mobile communication networks, e.g. 5G networks, implement several mechanisms, which allow UEs to move across the network with minimal communication degradation. Now, a brief explanation of some of the mechanisms related to connectivity and / or mobility in mobile communications networks will be provided:

[0004] Handover (HO) : This is a mobility procedure used in cellular communications (e.g., in 3GPP NR networks and in many other types of mobile networks) by which the base station (e.g., gNB) serving a UE changes. A legacy layer 3 handover procedure is controlled by the network, and typically involves the following steps: · The UE reports measurements of signals to a current serving gNB, according  to a configuration provided by the network (i.e., the gNB) . · The current serving gNB determines whether handover to a target gNB (i.e.,  a new serving gNB) is required, usually based on the reported measurements. · The current serving gNB provides the UE a configuration to be used for  communication with the target gNB. · The UE detaches from the source gNB and synchronizes and attaches to the  target gNB.

[0005] Conditional Handover (CHO) : This is a new type of mobility procedure for handover introduced by the 3GPP in Rel-16. The key principles of CHO are: · The preparation phase, which involves signalling between UE and gNB and  may also involve inter-gNB signalling, admission control, etc., and the execution phase, in which the UE stops communicating with the source cell and starts communicating with the target cell, of the HO are decoupled. · In CHO, the preparation phase may take place before the execution and it is  usually performed in a stable radio condition, that is, when the operating status of the serving cell has not yet been degraded. During the preparation phase, the UE is configured with candidate target cells for CHO (to which the serving cell may previously have sent a CHO request and received a CHO ACK) . The UE is also configured, by the serving cell, with one or more conditions for the UE to execute the handover. · The UE monitors the received conditions for the candidate cells and when the  UE determines (based on measurements and thresholds associated with the configured conditions) that the condition (s) are fulfilled, the UE triggers the CHO execution, e.g. by sending a CHO configuration message to the target cell. That is, CHO is executed if certain conditions are met. Summarizing, the UE is configured to perform measurements on some signals of the serving cell and candidate target cells and, if appropriate (if configured conditions are fulfilled) , it triggers the CHO. · CHO was introduced to improve the robustness of mobility since it allows the  network and the UE to prepare the HO while in good coverage conditions, while executing it only when the conditions degrade. The prior preparation of the handover ensures that, once its execution is triggered by the UE, it starts immediately and thereby minimizing any delay.

[0006] As an example, two events A3 and A5, described in the following, may be configured (jointly or separately) as conditions for triggering the CHO by the UE. Event A3 consists of one of the candidate target cells signal quality being better than the current serving cell by an offset; and event A5 consists of the current serving cell signal quality degrading below a first threshold while one of the candidate target cells signal quality becoming better than a second threshold.

[0007] Both events involve performing measurements of the signal quality associated with the current serving cell and the target candidate cells. The CHO configuration provided by the NW to the UE indicates on which signals these measurements should be performed. These signals to be measured by the UE, are signals transmitted by the current serving and the target candidate cells. For example, in 5G NR, two types of signals may be used to this end (as indicated in the CHO configuration) : Signals that are part of a synchronization signals block (SSB) , which is sometimes referred to as the synchronization signals PBCH block; and channel state information reference signals (CSI-RS) . Other signal types (e.g., mobility reference signals) could be used in the same way for the same purpose.

[0008] When the CHO is triggered and the UE is accessing the new cell, either contention based random access (CBRA) , or contention free random access (CFRA) may be used. To reduce latency, CFRA is typically preferred. CFRA preambles need to be reserved in all configured target cells, which could be expensive as the resources would be locked until the CHO is done, and it would impact the node capacity as more processing is needed during the time the CFRA preamble is active / used. So, it should be configured only to the limited number of UE belonging to the specific UE group requiring lower interruption.

[0009] A detailed signalling diagram for conditional handover can be found in clause 9.2.3.4.2. of 3GPP TS38.300 version 18.1.0.

[0010] L1 / L2-triggered mobility (LTM) : It comprises a set of procedures for mobility in which L1 / L2 control signalling is used for triggering the mobility. Similar to CHO, LTM decouples preparation and execution phases: The preparation phase is very similar to CHO, the serving cell provides the necessary configuration for the UE to change to another cell, the configuration is provided using RRC signalling and is stored by the UE for later use. The execution phase is triggered by the network by sending a L1 / L2 control message (aMAC CE) to the UE. This command is known as the LTM cell switch command. To allow the network to determine the right time for triggering LTM, the UE performs some measurements and reports them to the network.

[0011] In addition, LTM allows for reducing the interruption time caused by handover by means of making the UE to synchronize before the actual HO, in DL and / or UL. If the UE synchronizes early to the new cell, it can also be allowed to move to the new cell without performing random access, i.e., RACH-less LTM.

[0012] A detailed signalling diagram for LTM can be found in clause 9.2.3.5.2. of 3GPP TS38.300 version 18.1.0.

[0013] Table 1 summarizes the configuration and trigger features of the different mobility options presented so far. Table 1

[0014] Radio Link Failure (RLF) : In some circumstances the link between the UE and the network may fail (for example, due to due to poor signal quality, excessive interference, or mobility issues) and, consequently, the transmission of traffic may be interrupted. The UE may detect this issue by different means and declare a radio link failure (RLF) . RLF is declared upon different conditions, including detection of detecting physical layer problems (i.e. expiration of the associated timer T310) ; and reaching a maximum number of retransmissions in the Radio Link Control (RLC) layer.

[0015] In many cases, after declaring RLF the UE attempts a RRC connection re-establishment procedure.

[0016] Although the conditions for declaring RLF are well defined as captured in 3GPP Technical specification TS 38.331 V18.1.0, the root cause of the RLF can be quite diverse, including: A degradation in the operating conditions (e.g., because the UE enters an area with bad coverage) ; a bad radio resource management (RRM) by the network (e.g., improper beam management, failure to trigger handover, etc. ) ; a failure in the network (e.g., in the gNB) . The actions related to an RLF can be more detailed explained in clause 5.3.10. of 3GPP TS 38.331 version 18.1.0.

[0017] Inability to comply with RRCReconfiguration: There is a control mechanism by which a network node can provide a configuration that the UE needs to comply with, this configuration may enable new features, trigger handover, change an encryption key, etc. In 5G NR, the network sends RRCReconfiguration messages to the UE for this purpose. The network typically ensures that a configuration provided to the UE is suitable for the UE. However, in some cases, the UE may not be able to comply with it; possible reasons are an error in the network (e.g., in the control plane) or some issue affecting the UE. For this reason, the specification defines a procedure that the UE must follow when it is unable to comply with a configuration; in 5G NR, this procedure is described in clause 5.3.5.8.2 of 3GPP TS 38.331 version 18.1.0, and essentially results in initiating RRC connection re-establishment.

[0018] RRC connection re-establishment: When the connection between the network (NW) and the UE is interrupted for some reason (e.g., multiple consecutive errors, a loss of synchronization, the inability to comply with an RRCReconfiguration, etc. ) , the UE will attempt to re-establish the connection with the network. The procedure mainly comprises: · Releasing existing configurations and resetting some connection and UE internals. · Searching for and selecting a suitable cell. · Accessing the selected cell and transmitting corresponding connection re- establishment messages.

[0019] In some cases, the UE may be configured by the network with some alternative serving cells (e.g., target candidate cells for conditional handover or for L1 / L2-triggered mobility) . In other scenarios, to recover the connection, the UE may attempt a shorter process only consisting of searching for a suitable cell and selecting it. If the selected cell is one of the alternative serving cells configured by the network, the UE initiates a mobility procedure to the selected cell

[0020] The RRC connection re-establishment procedure is described in clause 5.3.7. of 3GPP TS 38.331 version 18.1.0 and, in clause 5.3.5.3, some steps to shorten the RRC connection re-establishment procedure are presented.

[0021] Control plane: The control plane are the set of procedures and associated signalling that are used for controlling the connection between the NW and the UE. There are multiple protocols that perform some control tasks. In the radio access network (RAN) , the RRC layer is responsible for many control tasks, including maintaining a connection between the UE and the RAN. The Non-Access Stratum (NAS) control protocol is responsible for establishing and maintaining a connection between the UE and the Core Network (CN) . The detailed control plane description is included in clause 4.4.2 of 3GPP TS 38.300 version 18.1.0 and the protocol stack for carrying control plane is illustrated in figure 4.4.2-1.

[0022] Paging: This is a procedure that enables the network to reach UEs in RRC_IDLE and RRC_INACTIVE states, among other functions. Paging is carried out through paging messages transmitted via a PDCCH, which are addressed to a specific paging ID-typically using a Paging RNTI (P-RNTI) . These messages are sent at predefined paging occasions, occurring at scheduled intervals. The PDCCH transmissions for paging are delivered within a designated search space. Notably, a single paging ID usually corresponds to a group of UEs. Upon receiving a paging message, a UE in RRC_IDLE or RRC_INACTIVE reconnects to the network using an RRC Connection establishment procedure (when the UE is in RRC_IDLE state) or RRC Resume (when the UE is in RRC_INACTIVE state) . Once the UE is again connected to the network, the NW can convey data to the UE, as necessary.

[0023] Search space: To facilitate downlink (DL) transmissions, the UE is configured with one or several search spaces (SSs) . A search space consists of a set of radio resources on which the UE attempts to decode PDCCH according to one or several predefined formats. In other words, the search space defines where and when the UE should look for PDCCH transmissions, including scheduling grants and paging messages. PDCCH further schedules other channels such as PDSCH if necessary.

[0024] The connectivity and mobility mechanisms in current mobile networks face several challenges and limitations that impact network performance, reliability, and user experience. Some of these problems are, for example: 1-Long connectivity interruptions following a failure in the network: A failure in the  existing mobile networks may result in the loss of communication. For example, if the main serving cell (PCell) or part of the corresponding gNB functionality fails (e.g., the RU, the DU, etc. ) the UE will likely lose connectivity and the communication will be interrupted. Typically, a NW failure results in the following steps: i) The UE detects some problem (e.g., one of the conditions triggering RLF) and eventually declaring RLF; ii) after that, the UE performs a cell search and selects a new cell; and iii) the UE initiates RRC connection re-establishment. The time interval that the connectivity is interrupted due to the failure can be quite  long (e.g., several seconds) . The existing 3GPP technical specifications provide some mechanisms to shorten the interruption time, mainly associated with the initiation RRC connection re-establishment by the UE. For example, the UE may leverage some mobility solution (e.g., by utilizing the CHO or LTM HO procedures if the selected cell is configured as a CHO or LTM candidate cell) . However, it is steps i) and ii) which contribute the most to the service interruption time. The specification provides means to shorten the time to declare RLF, but this is not  always a good solution since in many cases (e.g., when there are no failures in the serving cell) the UE can recover the connection by other means (before declaring RLF) . The duration of the cell search and selection of a new cell, typically depends on many implementation aspects as well as on the number of alternative cells, their frequencies, etc., therefore, it is difficult to reduce the interruption associated with this step for the general case or have guarantees on the corresponding time. 2-Loss of control plane connectivity following a failure in the serving cell: Even if  the specification provides tools for having UEs connected to multiple cells or even multiple cell groups, in many cases a UE is only connected to a single cell. This may not only be due to coverage reasons (e.g., there is only one cell with coverage in a specific area) but also due to limitations in the capabilities of the UE (e.g., number of TX / RX chains) , to save power, etc. In such cases, a failure of the serving cell results in the UE losing connection with the network. This typically involves steps i) , ii) and iii) previously mentioned. The considerations above about the long time to re-establish the connection are applicable in this case too.

[0025] Addressing the challenges and limitations of existing connectivity mechanisms is essential for enhancing network efficiency, improving user experience, and supporting emerging applications.Summary

[0026] This summary is provided to introduce embodiments that are further described below in the detailed description. This summary is not intended to be used to limit the scope of the claimed subject matter.

[0027] One of the objects of the disclosure is to provide an improved solution for handling connections in a mobile communications network, overcoming problems of existing solutions. Particularly, embodiments of the invention allow for shortening the interruption times associated with a failure in the network. Unlike existing mobility procedures, embodiments of the invention allow a UE to cope with failure in the serving cell by the use of reconnection messages transmitted to a UE from a cell different from the serving cell.

[0028] Embodiments of the invention comprise configuring the UE with an additional search space that the UE monitors at certain intervals. Said monitoring of the additional search space allow the UE to receive a reconnection message that triggers the UE to change to another serving cell and attempt to establish a new connection there or, in other words, the reconnection message triggers the UE to connect to the network using a different cell than the serving one and, in order to receive the reconnection message, the UE must monitor an additional search space.

[0029] The proposed solution has, among others, the following advantages over the prior art: · It ensures that a UE can connect back to the network in response to a failure.  The solution reduces the service interruption time by relying on a reconnection message that is transmitted on a search space that the UE is monitoring at regular intervals. By properly configuring the monitoring interval, the network can trade off service interruption time vs. complexity and energy consumption. · It enables using multiple carriers for resilience even if the UE only supports  reception on a single carrier (e.g., due to limitations in the number of RX chains) . · The invention enables the desired behaviour from the UEs with limited  complexity. In particular when compared to other solutions like dual connectivity which requires the UE to implement two protocol stacks and be connected to two cells at the same time. In contrast, according to embodiments of the invention a UE only has to monitor a recurrent search space (additional search space) in a cell, different from the serving cell. · Some embodiments may provide advantages by allowing for differentiated  network handling of reconnecting UEs. · Embodiments of the invention allow for shortening the interruption times  associated with a failure in the system. Unlike existing mobility procedures, embodiments of the invention allow a UE to cope with failure in the serving cell by the use of reconnection messages transmitted to a UE from a cell different from the serving cell.

[0057] Reference throughout this specification to features, advantages, or similar language does not imply that all of the features and advantages that may be realized with the present disclosure should be or are in any single embodiment of the disclosure. Rather, language referring to the features and advantages is understood to mean that a specific feature, advantage, or characteristic described in connection with an embodiment is included in at least one embodiment of the present disclosure. Furthermore, the described features, advantages, and characteristics of the disclosure may be combined in any suitable manner in one or more embodiments. One skilled in the art will recognize that the disclosure may be practiced without one or more of the specific features or advantages of a particular embodiment. In other instances, additional features and advantages may be recognized in certain embodiments that may not be present in all embodiments of the disclosure.

[0058] The term “based on” is to be read as “based at least in part on” . The term “one embodiment” and “an embodiment” are to be read as “at least one embodiment” . The term “another embodiment” is to be read as “at least one other embodiment” . Other definitions, explicit and implicit, may be included below. The term “one or more elements” is to be read as “only one element” or “aplurality of elements” . The term “at least element” is to be read as “only one element” or “more than one element” .

[0059] Even though this disclosure many times uses 5G terminology, procedures, architecture, etc. for the purpose of illustration, the embodiments here are applicable to other mobile communications networks as upcoming 6G or any other.

[0060] As previously mentioned, this disclosure presents a solution that can be leveraged for providing robustness against failures in the network, shortening the interruption times associated with a failure in the network.

[0061] As it will be explained later in more detail, the following actions may be performed in the solutions proposed in the present disclosure. This is a non-limiting example, and the procedure according to other examples may not comprise all the steps or comprise different steps.

[0062] The mobile communications network (NW) configures the UE with an additional search space that the UE has to monitor at certain intervals. The additional search space is associated with a cell that is different from the serving cell for that UE (or some / all of the serving cells for the UE if there is more than one) .

[0063] At required intervals, the UE monitors the additional search space for transmissions from the network of a message of a specific type (or for information about how to receive this message) . This type of message, referred as reconnection message in this disclosure, instructs the UE to reconnect to a target cell different from the serving cell. The target cell may be the cell associated with the additional search space or a different cell. In an embodiment, the reconnection message is transmitted directly in the additional search space (e.g., as part of some control signalling carried by PDCCH) . In alternative embodiments, the reconnection message is not transmitted in the additional search space, instead, in the additional search space, it is only transmitted information about how to receive the reconnection message. That is, in these latter embodiments, a transmission decoded in additional search space indicates another set of resources where the reconnection message is to be transmitted. For example, in a PDCCH decoded when monitoring the additional search space is carried control signalling and this control signalling indicates how to decode another transmission (e.g. of a PDSCH) carrying the reconnection message itself (e.g., a MAC CE or an RRC message carried by the PDSCH) .

[0064] Whenever the UE receives a reconnection message it changes to another cell (different from the serving cell) and attempts to connect with the network. In other words, the “reconnection message” indicates to the UE that the connection with the previous serving cell should no longer be used (e.g., it is not functional, the previous cell has failed, etc. ) and that instead, the UE should attempt to connect to another cell.

[0065] This connection to a different cell (after the reconnection message is received) may comprise a new connection establishment (e.g., using the RRC connection establishment procedure) or re-establishing an existing connection (e.g., using the RRC connection re-establishment procedure) . As this connection procedure is triggered by the “reconnection message” , it can be referred in this disclosure as well as the reconnection procedure.

[0066] As it can be seen, the proposed solutions may comprise mobile communications network embodiments (e.g. enabling the configuration of the additional search space, signalling of the reconnection messages, and facilitating the reconnection of the UE) and UE embodiments (e.g. monitoring the additional search space, enabling the processing of the reconnection message received in the additional search space and reconnecting to the NW) . In the following, embodiments will be described from the perspective of the UE and the NW (even though embodiments are separately provided for UE and NW perspectives, many of them are applicable to both a UE and a network node) .

[0067] In this context of mobile communications network technologies, the expression “anetwork node providing a cell” used in the following embodiments description and in the whole disclosure, means that the network node is the one that offers or hosts the cell, i.e., it is responsible for its operation or availability; in other words, the network node is serving the cell. Other terms which could be as well used instead of “providing” with the same meaning are, for example, “serving” , “supporting” , “operating” , “managing” , “associated with” or “responsible for” .

[0068] From the perspective of the UE, the proposed method comprises the following steps (Figure1) : a) The UE, being currently served by a first cell (serving cell) , receives (101) at  least one configuration message from the network node providing the first cell. Said configuration message (s) defines a new search space (referred to in this disclosure as additional search space) that the UE has to monitor. This additional search space is associated with a second cell different from the first cell. In other words, this additional search space is associated with resources (e.g. frequency resources) assigned to a second cell different from the serving cell. This configuration message may define implicitly (e.g., via some specified condition) or explicitly (e.g., via a field in the control message) the times in which the UE is expected to monitor the additional search space. The network node providing the first cell may be the same or different to the network node providing the second cell. b) The UE monitors (102) the additional search space for a reconnection message,  or information about how to receive the reconnection message. Said reconnection message instructing the UE to attempt connection to a cell other than the first cell (also referred to in the present disclosure as target cell) . c) When the UE detects one reconnection message that is intended for itself  (103) , the UE initiates a connection procedure with the network in a target cell different from the first cell (this target cell, where the UE connects can be the second cell associated to the additional search space or a different cell) . How to connect with the network (after the reconnection message is received) may be determined based on the additional search space and / or by the configuration received in step a) or by any other means.

[0069] Further details will now be presented for each of the aforementioned steps:

[0070] Step a) : The configuration message (s) received in step a) may define the additional search space in a direct or indirect manner. For example, the configuration message may directly indicate the frequency resources which comprise the additional search space. The configuration message may also contain the time periods when the UE has to monitor the additional search space. That is, in an embodiment, the configuration message indicates the frequency resources and / or the time resources that constitute the additional search space. This is illustrated in Figure 5, where the location of the additional search space (SS) that the UE has to monitor in the second cell, with a frequency carrier referred as carrier 2 in the example shown in figure 5, is directly determined from the content of the configuration message received by the UE in the serving cell, with a frequency carrier referred as carrier 1 in the example shown in figure 5. This SS location may refer to the frequency and time intervals forming the additional search space. In this example, the additional search space is defined by the frequency resources of the cell where the additional search space is located and the time periods where the UE has to monitor said carrier to receive the reconnection message. In the specific example shown in figure 5, the reconnection message is received through the fourth instance (the fourth time interval) of the additional search space.

[0071] In an alternative embodiment, the configuration message received in step a) may point to another transmission that indicates the time / frequency resources that constitute the additional search space, defining therefore the additional SS in an indirect way. In this embodiment, the configuration message indicates radio resources for reception of a network signalling and the UE determines the additional SS that the UE has to monitor based on said network signalling and / or said radio resources. For example, the configuration message may indicate to the UE some network transmission (e.g., a SSB from an alternative cell) that the UE has to decode, and which can be used to determine the search space to monitor (e.g., a search space associated with the SSB) . This is illustrated in figure 6, where the location of the additional SS that the UE has to monitor in the second cell, with a frequency carrier referred as carrier 2 in the example shown in figure 6, is indirectly determined from the configuration message received by the UE in the serving cell, with a frequency carrier referred as carrier 1 in the example shown in figure 6. This location may refer to the frequency and time intervals forming the additional search space. In this example, to determine each instance of the search space that the UE has to monitor, the UE must first detect / receive a corresponding transmission of a network signalling (an instance of SSB) , which allows the UE to determine the corresponding instance of the search space. In the specific example shown in figure 6, the reconnection message is received through the fourth instance of the additional search space.

[0072] Combinations of the above stated options are also possible, as illustrated in figure 7. For example, to determine each instance (frequency resources and time period) of the additional SS that the UE has to monitor, the UE must first detect / receive a first transmission of an instance of SSB (indicated by the configuration message) . From this first transmission of the SSB the UE can determine the multiple instances of the additional SS space to monitor. In the specific example shown in figure 7, the reconnection message is received through the fourth instance of the additional search space.

[0073] The configuration message received in step a) may also include parameters (e.g. scrambling initialization sequences, identities, etc. ) , that the UE is intended to use when decoding messages received in the additional search space. This is, for example, to reduce the probability that a malicious agent takes over control of the UE from additional the search space. The configuration message may also include configuration information of the second cell (where the additional SS is located) needed to receive messages in the additional search space.

[0074] In both cases (direct and indirect definition of the additional SS) , the configuration message received in step a) may also define a period in which the UE is expected to perform monitoring, e.g. of the additional search space directly or of some basic transmission such as a SSB that is used to determine when to perform monitoring.

[0075] The configuration message may also include parameters that assist the UE in deciding whether to attempt detection of messages on the additional SS or not, including in the configuration message one or more criteria that have to be fulfilled for the UE to attempt detection of messages in the additional search space.

[0076] For example, in an embodiment the UE may avoid attempting detection of messages on the additional SS if the signal strength or signal quality of certain reference signals received from the second cell is below a certain threshold. That is, the criteria included in the configuration message comprise a threshold that the signal strength or signal quality of one or more reference signals received from the second cell must exceed, in order for the UE to attempt message detection in the additional search space. Those reference signals may for example be associated to transmissions from the same radio units that transmit messages in the additional SS. In this way, the UE may achieve energy and computational advantage, by avoiding attempting detection of messages on the additional SS, if the quality / strength of the signals in the additional SS is anyway too low.

[0077] In another embodiment, the criteria included in the configuration message comprises a threshold that the signal strength or signal quality of one or more reference signals received from the first cell must not exceed, in order for the UE to attempt message detection in the additional search space in the second cell. In this way, the UE may achieve energy and computational advantage, by avoiding attempting detection of messages on the additional SS, if the quality / strength of the signals in the first cell is good enough. In this way, the UE may achieve energy and computational advantage, by avoiding attempting detection of messages on the search space, if the quality of the quality / strength of the signals first search space is anyway too low.

[0078] Although this disclosure refers to a configuration message for the sake of conciseness and clarity, it should be understood that multiple configuration messages may be used to define the additional search space, without departing from the scope of this disclosure.

[0079] Step b) : In one embodiment, the reconnection message is intended for a specific UE, including an identification corresponding to the UE. For example, the reconnection message is associated with a UE-specific ID such as a UE Radio Network Temporary Identifier, RNTI, or any other ID uniquely identifying the UE. In another embodiment, the “reconnection message” is for a group of UEs, including an identification corresponding to a group of UEs, e.g., it is associated with a group-specific ID such as a group RNTI, a paging ID, or some other group ID. In one embodiment, the ID (e.g., RNTI) used for transmission of the reconnection message is the same that is used in the serving cell. In another embodiment, the ID is a different one, e.g., specific for the second cell in which the additional SS space is defined or specifically defined for this purpose. The ID being used may be part of a security procedure or derived in a security procedure, e.g., to ensure that the requests to re-connect come from a legitimate source.

[0080] In one embodiment, the reconnection message is a paging message and the UE monitors the additional SS space associated with paging at the corresponding paging occasions. The paging message may be associated with a special ID to indicate that this is a message with a different purpose than other paging messages. In alternative embodiments the reconnection message may be a RRC message or a MAC Control Element (MAC CE) message or any other type of network message.

[0081] In one embodiment, the UE has monitoring gaps, in which it is not expected to receive in the serving cell while monitoring or preparing to monitor the additional search space in the second cell. These monitoring gaps may include the duration of the search space instance. They may also include some switching time before and / or after the additional search space instance. For example, if the UE has a single available RX chain it may need to switch the RX frequency and other RX parameters used for the serving cell to a different RX frequency and RX parameters used for the second cell before the additional search space instance; and switch back after the search space instance. Other limitations of capabilities may also be applicable to these monitoring gaps.

[0082] In one embodiment, the UE is expected to monitor the additional search space during measurement gaps (i.e., gaps in which the UE is expected to perform measurements on other cells than the serving cell) . This may be applicable to UEs with limited capabilities e.g., with a single RX chain.

[0083] In one embodiment, the reconnection message may include additional information to be used by the UE for connecting with the network in the target cell. For example, information to be used for random access to the network (e.g., RACH occasion or preamble) or an uplink grant for transmission in the target cell.

[0084] Step c) : As previously stated, when a reconnection message for the UE is detected, the UE initiates a connection procedure with the NW in a target cell different from the first cell. The connection procedure can be determined by the UE using many different mechanisms. Here, as non-limitative examples, two of these mechanisms are presented. · In one embodiment, how to connect with the network in this connection  procedure is determined by the configuration received in step a) . For example, as part of the configuration, it may be provided some information regarding the cell to connect to, e.g., frequency, PHY parameters, cell ID, or any other cell-related parameter. · In one embodiment, how to connect with the network is determined based on  the additional search space. For example, the additional search space may be associated directly or indirectly with a channel or a procedure for accessing the cell (e.g. . the additional search space may be associated with a search space B which determines the random access channel or occasion to use for connecting to the network) .

[0085] In one embodiment, the UE indicates during the connection procedure that the cause for the connection is the reception the “reconnection message” . This may be indicated in a field of a message transmitted during the procedure (e.g., if the RRC connection re-establishment procedure is used for (re) connection, the cause may be indicated using the field reestablishmentCause in the RRCReestablishmentRequest message) . This way, the network may prioritize the UE connection procedure as it is caused by the reception of a reconnection message.

[0086] The connection procedure may comprise establishing a new connection or reestablishing an existing connection. In one embodiment, the UE determines whether to establish a new connection (e.g. a RRC connection) or to re-establish a previous connection (e.g. a previous RRC connection) based on a security setting or considerations (e.g., a new connection involves some additional security mechanisms that may be desirable) . Similarly, the UE may determine whether to establish a new connection or to re-establish a previous connection based on a priority value, setting or consideration (e.g., high priority UEs execute a prioritized procedure) .

[0087] In one embodiment, the UE determines whether to establish a new connection, or to re-establish the connection based on a configuration provided by the NW, for example in step a) .

[0088] The configuration message or the reconnection message may include the identity of the target cell that the UE has to connect to or information about said target cell. In other embodiments, the identity of the cell to connect to is not indicated by the NW to the UE, but the UE itself determines which cell to connect to, after receiving the reconnection message based on its own configuration (e.g., based on cells coverage criteria or any other criteria) . In these embodiment, the reconnection message triggers connection only (to a cell different from the serving cell) but without determining the cell to connect to; that is, the reconnection message informs the UE that the serving cell is no longer available and that therefore, the UE has to connect to a different cell, but without specifying the cell to connect to.

[0089] During or after the connection to the target cell, the UE may further execute a security procedure to authenticate itself and / or to authenticate the network. In this way, the UE and the network can verify that after the change of serving cell, the communication is still legitimate.

[0090] The steps of any of the previously proposed embodiments may be implemented by a UE.For example, the UE (300) illustrated in Figure 3, comprising at least one processor (301) , at least one reception unit (302) for receiving message from the network, and at least one memory (303) . The memory containing instructions executable by the at least one processor (301) , making the user equipment (300) network node operative to perform the tasks of the above stated methods proposed by the present disclosure. The user equipment may be a mobile phone, a laptop, a IoT device or any user electronic device which is able to communicate with the mobile communications network.

[0091] From the perspective of the mobile communications network (NW) , the proposed method comprises the following steps (Figure2) : A) A first network node transmits (201) at least one configuration message to the  UE, the UE being served by a first cell (provided by the first network node) . Said configuration message (s) defines a new search space (referred to in this disclosure as additional search space) that the UE has to monitor. This additional search space is associated with a second cell (provided by a second network node) different from the first cell. In other words, this additional search space is associated with resources (e. g. frequency resources) assigned to a cell different from the serving cell. This configuration message may define implicitly (e.g., via some specified condition) or explicitly (e.g., via a field in the control message) the times in which the UE is expected to monitor the additional search space. B) The second network node obtains information (202) indicating a condition  which makes a first cell unsuitable to continue serving a UE in the first cell (the serving cell) . C) In response to obtaining said information, the second network node transmits  (203) , to the UE, through the additional search space, a reconnection message (or information about how to receive a reconnection message) , said reconnection message instructing the UE to attempt connection to a cell other than the first cell. This target cell, where the UE connects can be the second cell associated to the additional search space or a different cell.

[0092] The network node (first network node providing the first cell) transmitting the configuration message (s) may be the same or different from the network node (second network node providing the second cell) transmitting the reconnection message (or information about how to receive the reconnection message) through the additional search space. In an embodiment, the method will be performed in the Radio Access Network (RAN) , so these first and second network nodes would be RAN nodes (for example a gNBs or any other) .

[0093] In the latter case (the first network node is different from the second network node) , the first network node may provide information about the configuration of the additional search space to the second network node to enable the second network node to apply the correct configuration when using the additional search space.

[0094] Further details will now be presented for each of the aforementioned steps:

[0095] Step A) : An external reference signal may be sent by the first network node to the UE for downlink synchronization in the second cell with the additional search space. If UE does not support multiple receivers, the first network node could send measurement gap configuration information to align receiving behaviour in serving cell.

[0096] The configuration message sent in Step A) . by the first network node may define the additional search space in a direct or indirect manner, as explained before in step a) . which is also applicable here.

[0097] An explicit RNTI can be given in the configuration message sent in Step A) . Or an implicit RNTI can be derived from existing information, such as a Physical Cell Identity (PCI) and / or a Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identity (TMSI) .

[0098] The NW may select the additional search space occasion (instance) based on static (e.g. preconfigured according to cell relation) or dynamic (e.g. based on load) information. Unlike search space in a secondary cell (SCell) , the additional search space occasion selection in embodiments of this disclosure, is not related to UE needs (e.g. small package or heavy traffic) or UE position (e.g. cell edge or cell center) .

[0099] In one embodiment, the method is used when resilience service is supported and required. In one embodiment, whether “resilience is supported” depends on NW configuration and deployment (e.g., whether there are multiple carriers covering a certain area, etc. ) . In another embodiment, whether “resilience is supported” depends on the UE and its reported capabilities.

[0100] In one embodiment, whether the “resilience service is required” depends, directly or indirectly, on the service or subscriber profile in the mobile operator network. For example, certain subscribers or certain services may require improved resilience, which can be achieved by assigning them to a network slice. Identification of traffic for such subscribers and services can be done in multiple ways, including user-plane tagging (URSP rules) and traffic filtering by using 4-tuples or 5-tuples templates, including IP addresses and ports.

[0101] In one embodiment, the NW configures the additional search space in the second cell taking into account the measurement gaps of the serving cell (first cell) . More specifically, the additional SS is configured to be aligned with, or to be contained within, all or some of the measurement gaps (e.g. gaps for inter-frequency measurements) in the serving cell. That is, the NW will transmit the reconnection message in the second cell aligned with the measurement gaps in serving cell, to maximize probability that the UE can detect the message even inter-frequency.

[0102] Alternatively, all or some of the measurement gaps in the serving cell could be configured taking into account the additional search space in the second cell (e.g. the measurement gaps in the serving cell are configured to be aligned with the additional SS in the second cell) .

[0103] In one dependent embodiment, there is supporting signalling between the first cell and the second cell to exchange information about the measurement gaps for the UE. Dedicated gaps for the purpose of listening to the additional SS may be considered too.

[0104] Figure 8 illustrates the legacy behaviour of measurement gaps for inter-frequency measurements. The UE is served by the serving cell (carrier 1) and during the measurement gaps, the UE is not scheduled in carrier 1. This allows the UE to perform inter-frequency measurements (e.g., to acquire DL sync, to measure RSRP, etc. ) in carrier 2, which uses a different frequency

[0105] Figure 9 illustrates an embodiment of the present disclosure where the additional search space in the second cell, with a frequency carrier referred as carrier 2 in the example shown in figure 9 is aligned with the measurement gap (e.g. gaps for inter-frequency measurements) in the serving cell, with a frequency carrier referred as carrier 1 in the example shown in figure 9. The measurement gap which may be possibly extended with respect to the value used for the legacy behaviour, as shown in this figure. During the measurement gaps, the UE is not scheduled in carrier 1. This allows the UE to perform inter-frequency measurements (e.g., to acquire DL sync, to measure RSRP, etc. ) in the carrier 2, which uses a different frequency. It also allows the UE to detect possible transmissions in the additional search space in the second cell. For example, in Figure 9, the reconnection message is received in the second instance of the additional search space.

[0106] Figure 10 illustrates an embodiment of the present disclosure where the additional search space in the second cell, with a frequency carrier referred as carrier 2 in the example shown in figure 10coincides with a dedicated gap in the serving cell, with a frequency carrier referred as carrier 1 in the example shown in figure 10, which we refer to as SS (search space) gap. During the measurement and SS gaps, the UE is not scheduled in carrier 1. Measurement gaps are used by the UE to perform inter-frequency measurements (e.g., to acquire DL sync, to measure RSRP, etc. ) in carrier 2. SS gaps allow the UE to detect possible transmissions in the additional search space in the second cell. For example, in Figure 10, the reconnection message is received by the UE in the second instance of the additional search space.

[0107] In one embodiment, the NW configures the additional search space in the second cell aligned with the Discontinuous Reception (DRX) cycle / configuration for the UE (e.g., in the serving cell) . That is, the additional search space is configured to take into account the DRX cycle of the first cell. More specifically, the additional search space is configured so it coincides with or is contained within the active time of the DRX cycle. This is shown in figure 11 where the additional SS in the second cell, with a frequency carrier referred as carrier 2, is aligned with the DRX cycle in the first cell, with a frequency carrier referred as carrier 1, so that the transmission of the reconnection message coincides with the time the UE is expected to be active. In the specific example of figure 11, the reconnection message is received by the UE in the second instance of the additional search space.

[0108] In one embodiment, there is supporting signalling between serving cell and the second cell to exchange information about the DRX configuration for the UE.

[0109] Step B) : The conditions which makes a first cell unsuitable to continue serving a UE in the serving cell, triggering the transmission of the reconnection message, can vary. In general terms, the network sends the reconnection message when it detects a failure in the serving cell or a network failure which affects the serving cell. For example, the NW detects that the serving cell is out-of-service, the NW detects a degradation in the operating conditions or any other issues that would affect the performance of the serving cell.

[0110] Step C) : In response to detecting the unsuitability condition, the second network node providing the second cell, transmits to the UE the reconnection message or information about how to receive the reconnection message.

[0111] In the case where the second network node transmits the reconnection message directly in the additional search space, the reconnection message may be transmitted in a PDCCH channel (for example, as part of some control signalling carried by PDCCH) . This is only a non-limiting example, and other channels may be used to transmit the reconnection message.

[0112] In the second case, the second network node does not transmit the reconnection message itself but just information which allows the UE to receive the reconnection message. Said information may be information about a different set of resources that the UE has to use to receive the reconnection message.

[0113] In an embodiment, said information about how to receive the reconnection message may be included in a PDCCH channel and may comprise information about another channel (e.g. a PDSCH channel) which carries the reconnection message. For example, control signalling is carried in a PDCCH (decoded when monitoring the additional search space) and this control signalling indicates how to decode another transmission (e.g. of a PDSCH) carrying the reconnection message itself (e.g., a MAC CE or an RRC message carried by the PDSCH) . This is only a non-limiting example, and other channels may be used to transmit the reconnection message.

[0114] The second network node can send a reconnection message to one UE or multiple UE at a time.

[0115] In one embodiment, the second network node transmits the (same) reconnection message to multiple UEs. That is, in this case, if there are several UEs which have to connect to a different cell, e.g. due to a failure of the serving cell, the same reconnection message is transmitted to more than one UE. This is illustrated in figure 12, where after detecting a cell failure in the serving cell, with a frequency carrier referred as carrier 1 in the example of figure 12, a reconnection message is sent to multiple UEs in several instances of the additional SS in the second cell, with a frequency carrier referred as carrier 2 in the example of figure 12. The message content and decoding key are the same for these UEs (the message including an identification associated to the group of UEs, such as a group RNTI or any other group identification) . The reconnection message can be sent once or many times (as shown in figure 12, where the message is sent four times) . Up to configuration, step A) , the UEs may have same or different occasions to receive the message.

[0116] In an alternative embodiment, the second network node transmits a reconnection message intended to one single UE. In this case, if there are different UEs which must connect to a different cell, a different reconnection message is sent to each UE. This is illustrated in figure 13 where after detecting a cell failure in the serving cell, with a frequency carrier referred as carrier 1 in the example of figure 13, a reconnection message is sent to each of the UEs, UE1 to UE4, in different instances of the additional SS in the second cell, with a frequency carrier referred as carrier 2 in the example of figure 13; each message being intended to a single UE. Different UEs receive different message contents and decoding keys (each message including an identification associated to a single UE) . Each message can be sent once or many times. Up to configuration, step A) , each UE may have same or different occasions to receive the message.

[0117] Once the UE receives the reconnection message, it will initiate a connection procedure with the NW in a target cell (different from the first cell) . This target cell may be the second cell (associated to the additional SS) or a different cell.

[0118] As previously explained, when UE initiates the connection, the NW may prioritize the request from the UE if it is indicated (e.g., in the RRCReestablishmentRequest) that the cause for the connection is the reception of a reconnection message from the NW (in other words, that the procedure described in this disclosure is being performed) . For example, the NW prioritizes the RRC connection re-establishment of this UE over the establishment of new RRC connections.

[0119] In some embodiment, the NW decides whether / how to treat the UE connection procedure, based on some access parameter (e.g., a RACH preamble) . For example, if the NW determines that the UE is not using the configured parameters, then the NW may decide not to prioritize the connection request from the UE.

[0120] Once the UE finishes connection setup (the UE completes access to the NW) , the NW may perform actions to clean existing UE context in the old serving cell (the first cell) ; for example if the UE is identified from a failure cell and some entities of source cell are still working.

[0121] The steps of any of the previously proposed embodiments from the perspective of the mobile communications network, may be implemented by network nodes (e.g. a RAN node) . For example, the network node (400) illustrated in Figure 4, comprising at least one processor (401) and at least one memory (402) . The memory containing instructions executable by the at least one processor (401) , making the network node (402) operative to perform the tasks of above stated methods from the perspective of the mobile communications network, proposed by the present disclosure.

[0122] In one embodiment, this network node is the second node which provides the second cell and which performs steps B) and C) . In one embodiment, said network node also performs step A) (that is, the network node providing the second cell also provides the first cell or, in other words, the first and second network node is the same node) . In an alternative embodiment, step A) will be performed by a different node, that is, the network node providing the second cell is different from the node providing the first cell or, in other words, the first and second network nodes are different nodes. In this case, the node providing the second cell may receive from the network node providing the first cell, information about the configuration of the additional search space in the second cell.

[0123] In one embodiment, the network node will be a RAN node, for example a gNB or any other.
