[0154] The interfaces between the terminal nodes 110 and the access nodes 120 are radio interfaces 124 (e.g., Uu interfaces) . The interfaces between the access nodes 120 and one or more core nodes 130 are backhaul interfaces 128 (e.g., S1 and / or Next Generation, NG, interfaces) .

[0155] Depending on the exact deployment scenario, the access nodes 120 may be RAN nodes such as NG-RAN nodes. NG-RAN nodes may be gNodeBs, gNBs, that provide NG user plane and control plane protocol terminations towards the UE. The gNBs are connected by means of NG interfaces to a 5G Core, 5GC, not least for example to an Access and Mobility Management Function, AMF, by means of an NG Control Plane, NG-C, interface and to a User Plane Function, UPF, by means of an NG User Plane, NG-U, interface. The AMF may be connected by means of an N1 interface to the UE (not shown) . The access nodes 120 may be interconnected with each other by means of Xn interfaces 126.

[0156] The cellular network 100 may be configured to operate in licensed frequency bands, or unlicensed frequency bands (not least such as: unlicensed bands that rely upon a transmitting device to sense the radio resources / medium before commencing transmission, such as via a Listen Before Talk, LBT, procedure; and a 60GHz unlicensed band where beamforming may be required to achieve required coverage) .

[0157] The access nodes 120 may be deployed in an NG standalone operation / scenario. The access nodes 120 may be deployed in a NG non-standalone operation / scenario. The access nodes 120 may be deployed in a Carrier Aggregation, CA, operation / scenario. The access nodes 120 may be deployed in a Dual Connectivity, DC, operation / scenario, i.e., Multi Radio Access Technology -Dual Connectivity, MR-DC, or NR-DC. The access nodes 120 may be deployed in a Multi Connectivity, MC, operation / scenario.

[0158] In such non-standalone / dual connectivity deployments, the access nodes 120 may be interconnected to each other by means of X2 or Xn interfaces, and connected to an Evolved Packet Core, EPC, by means of an S1 interface or to the 5GC by means of a NG interface.

[0159] One or more terminal nodes 110, in addition to being capable of communicating (i.e. with other terminal nodes) via access nodes 120 of the network 100, may also be capable of and configured to communicate directly with one or more other terminal nodes. In this regard, the terminal node may be capable of and configured to perform device-to-device, D2D, communication -which may be referred to as Sidelink, SL, communication. Such D2D / SL communication may use a PC5 interface. PC5 refers to a reference point where the terminal node communicates directly with another terminal node over a direct channel (i.e. communication via an access node is not required) . D2D communications may be short-range, network-less, direct communications. SL in New Radio (NR) is defined in 3GPP’s release 16 of 5G NR.

[0160] In the example of FIG. 1 the core node 130 (i.e. 5GC) is shown as a single entity. In some examples the core node 130 could be distributed across a plurality of entities. For example, the core node 130 could be cloud based or distributed in any other suitable manner. The core node / core entities may provide one or more functions, not least such as: User Plane Function UPF, Session Management Function SMF, Policy Control Function PCF, Application Function AF, Location Management Function, LMF, and Access and Mobility Management Function, AMF.

[0161] The access nodes 120 are network elements in the network responsible for radio transmission and reception in one or more cells 122 to or from the terminal nodes 110. The access nodes 120 are the network termination of a radio link. Each access node may be a Transmission Reception Point, TRP, or may host one or more TRPs.

[0162] An access node 120 may be implemented as a single network equipment, or have a split architecture that is disaggregated / distributed over two or more access nodes, such as a Centralized / Control Unit, CU, a Distributed Unit, DU, a Remote Radio Head-end, RRH, using different functional-split architectures and different interfaces.

[0163] The terminal nodes 110 are network elements in the network that terminate the user side of the radio link. They are devices allowing access to network services. Terminal node 110 functionalities may be performed also by Mobile Termination, MT, part of an Integrated Access and Backhaul, IAB, node. The terminal nodes 110 may be referred to as User Equipment, UE, mobile equipment, mobile terminals, or mobile stations.

[0164] The term ‘User Equipment’ may be used to designate mobile equipment comprising means, such as a smart card, for authentication / encryption etc. such as a Subscriber Identity Module, SIM. A SIM / SIM card can be a memory chip, a module, or a Universal Subscriber Identity Module (USIM) . In some examples, the term ‘User Equipment’ can be used to designate a location / position tag, a hyper / smart, a hyper / smart sensor, or a mobile equipment comprising circuitry embedded as part of the user equipment for authentication / encryption such as a software SIM.

[0165] In the following description:

[0166] · a terminal node of the network (i.e. wherein the network comprises a RAN / cellular network not least such as a 5G or 6G next generation RAN) may be referred to simply as UE 110;

[0167] · an access node of the network may be referred to interchangeably as BS 120 or gNB 120; and

[0168] · the network may be referred to simply as NW 100, and network entities may be referred to simply as NE 102.

[0169] There now follows a brief discussion of UE Radio Capability information.

[0170] UE Radio Capability Information may relate to detailed specifications and features that a UE (not least a UE such as a smartphone, but also a high-end UE such as fixed wireless access routers) communicates to the network. This information may be used for optimizing the UE’s performance. UE Radio Capability Information may comprise information indicative of capabilities of the UE and functionalities supported by the UE. UE Radio Capability Information may comprise information indicative of / related to, not least for example one or more of the following:

[0171] Carrier Aggregation; Dual Connectivity; Multiple Input Multiple Output, MIMO; frequency bands, Multiple Universal Subscriber Identity Module, MUSIM; a number of Component Carriers, CC; a maximum Bandwidth, BW; and a maximum aggregated bandwidth supported by the UE.

[0172] UE Radio Capability Information may be exchanged between the UE and the network during an initial connection setup (e.g. a registration procedure) , as well as during handovers, or when a new service is activated. UE Radio Capability Information may be exchanged whenever a gNB requests it in RRC_CONNECTED. Initial connection setup is an example of when UE Radio Capability Information may be exchanged. The UE Radio Capability Information may be stored in an AMF and in a gNB in RRC_CONNECTED and RRC_INACTIVE. Stored UE Radio Capability Information may be sent from the AMF to the gNB, e.g. during subsequent connection establishments or NG based hand overs, HOs, or between gNBs during Xn HOs. There are also cases when, after a HO, a (new) gNB requests UE Radio Capability Information from a UE because the UE Radio Capability Information stored in the NW does not cover some inter-RAT capabilities (or some other capabilities) , that previous gNBs were not interested in, but whereas the new gNB has such inter-RAT neighbors (or features) .

[0173] The UE Radio Capability Information may be stored at a core node of the network such as an AMF.

[0174] There now follows a brief discussion of changing a UE’s Radio Capability information.

[0175] 3GPP Technical Specification, TS, 23.501 (version 19.2.1 by way of a non-limiting example) , Clause 5.4.4.1 discusses the storage of UE radio capability information in an AMF. In this, it mentions that if the UE's NG-RAN, or E-UTRAN, UE Radio Capability information changes while in a Connection Management, CM, IDLE state, then the UE shall perform a Registration procedure with a Registration type set to Mobility Registration Update and also includes "UE Radio Capability Update" . When the AMF receives a Mobility Registration Update Request with the "UE Radio Capability Update" requested by the UE, the AMF shall delete any UE Radio Capability information that it has stored for the UE. If the UE's NG-RAN UE Radio Capability information changes when the UE is in CM-IDLE with Suspend, Non-Access Stratum, NAS, shall trigger Access Stratum, AS, to establish a new RRC connection and not resume the existing one in order to perform the Registration procedure with the Registration type set to Mobility Registration Update including "UE Radio Capability Update" . As a result of this, the access stratum in the UE will discard the AS information and establish a new RRC connection.

[0176] 3GPP TS 23.501 version 19.2.1 Clause 5.4.4.1 also describes the UE behaviour when a trigger to change (i.e. a detection of a need to change) the UE's UE Radio Capability information happens when the UE is in a CM-CONNECTED state. In this regard, it mentions that, if the trigger to change the UE's NG-RAN or E UTRAN UE Radio Capability information happens when the UE is in CM-CONNECTED state, the UE shall first enter CM-IDLE state and then perform the Registration procedure with the Registration type set to Mobility Registration Update and it also includes "UE Radio Capability Update" .

[0177] FIG. 2 shows a signaling diagram illustrating how, under the current standard (e.g. 3GPP TS 23.501 v. 19.2.1 Clause 5.4.4.1) , a UE handles a UE Radio Capability change trigger happening when the UE in an RRC_CONNECTED state.

[0178] When a trigger to change the UE’s UE Radio Capability information happens when the UE is in CM-CONNECTED / RRC_CONNECTED state (e.g. the trigger is detected, during CM-CONNECTED / RRC_CONNECTED state, by the UE’s AS) , which is schematically represented by block A, the UE behaves as specified in the current standard. In this regard, the UE locally enters a CM-IDLE / RRC_IDLE state and performs a procedure (schematically represented by block B) to change the UE’s UE Radio Capability information which involves establishing a new connection for the purpose of NAS Registration.

[0179] However, a side effect of the above scenario is that the gNB is not aware of the UE’s transition from an RRC_CONNECTED state to an RRC_IDLE state. Accordingly, from the gNB’s perspective the UE is still in an RRC_CONNECTED state. As a consequence, the gNB discovers a radio connection problem (e.g. due to no responses for the gNB’s downlink, DL, transmissions) which leads to unnecessary DL and UL retransmissions accompanied with increased power and codec rate (lower Modulation and Coding Scheme, MCS) usage until a detection of Radio Link Failure, RLF, at gNB (schematically shown in block C) . Following on from which, the gNB keeps the UE context of the UE and waits for a RRC Reestablishment procedure which never happens. Finally, since the UE already established a new RRC connection for the purpose of NAS Registration, the AMF detects that there are two simultaneous NGAP connections for the same UE (schematically shown in block D) and it releases the old one (schematically shown in block E) .

[0180] Accordingly, such a scenario results in wasting of radio resources (not least unnecessary DL / UL retransmissions / resource allocations) and an adverse RAN Key Performance Indicator, KPI, impact (e.g. it is seen as a ‘real’ RLF by the RAN) . Other KPIs that may also be impacted include, not least for example, MCS usage distribution, and number of retransmissions.

[0181] As will be set out below, certain examples of the present disclosure seek to address such issues that stem from the gNB not being informed about the UE’s local transition from RRC_CONNECTED to RRC_IDLE state due to a change in UE Radio Capabilities occurring whilst the UE is in an RRC_CONNECTED state (e.g. detecting / determining a trigger to change, or a need to change, the UE’s radio capability information) -which results in wasting of radio resources and RAN KPI impact. The occurrence of a change in UE Radio Capabilities occurring whilst the UE is in an RRC_CONNECTED state may correspond to, or comprise, detecting / determining a trigger to change, or a need to change, the UE’s radio capability information. Such a trigger, and detection of the same may be implementation specific UE functionality, e.g. to adjust to NW features (seen via SIB1) or other features (not visible in SIB1) or environment conditions by trial and error method) .

[0182] It is noted that a UE in an RRC_CONNECTED state is inherently also in a CM-CONNECTED state. In view of this, as used herein, references to an RRC_CONNECTED state may be replaced with references to a CM-CONNECTED state, and hence such terms may be interchangeable (unless the context demands otherwise) .

[0183] FIG. 3 schematically illustrates an example of a signaling framework 300, between a UE 110, and the network, NW 100 (e.g. a network entity, NE, 102 such as a gNB 120 serving the UE) for supporting a procedure 311.

[0184] In block 301, the NE may transmit, to the UE, configuration information for configuring the UE to perform a procedure 311 –the procedure comprising the UE’s performance of blocks 302 and 303 which are discussed below.

[0185] In some examples (not shown in FIG. 3 but shown in FIG. 4 in message 1) , the network transmits, to the UE, a request for information indicative of at least one capability of the UE to perform the procedure (i.e. wherein the procedure comprises: determining that a change in UE radio capability information occurred whilst the UE is in the connected state (e.g. detecting a trigger, whilst the UE is in the connected state, to change the UE’s radio capability information) , and transmitting of the at least one indication to the network) . Responsive to the request, the UE may transmit, to the NE, capability information indicative of its capability to carry out / support the procedure 311 (not shown in FIG. 3 but shown in FIG. 4 in message 2) .

[0186] In some examples, the configuration information is transmitted by to the network to the UE based at least in part on the received via at least one of:

[0187] In some examples, the configuration information is transmitted via at least one of: a dedicated message; a broadcasted message; Layer 3, L3, signaling; a Radio Resource Control, RRC, message; a Reconfiguration message; or a System Information Block, SIB.

[0188] In block 302, the UE detects, whilst it is in a connected state 314, a change of radio capability information 313 associated with the UE. In this regard, the UE may detect / determine, whilst it is in the connected state, an occurrence of a trigger to change information 313 indicative of a radio capability associated with the UE.

[0189] In some examples, the connected state 314 comprises at least one of: an active connected state; an active connected state with an access node (e.g. gNB) of the network; a Radio Resource Control, RRC, connected state; an active connected state with a core node (e.g. AMF) of the network; or a Connection Management, CM, connected state.

[0190] In some examples, the information 313 indicative of a radio capability associated with the UE comprises at least one of: radio capability information of the UE; or UE radio capability information.

[0191] In some examples, the UE detects / determines a trigger (i.e. a need) to change its radio capability information 314 whilst it is in an RRC connected state.

[0192] The information indicative of a radio capability associated with the UE may be referred to herein as UE Radio Capability information 314. Such UE Radio Capability information may comprise information indicative of a UE’s radio capabilities in relation to, not least for example: carrier aggregation, dual connectivity, MIMO, band, MUSIM, number of CCs, maximum BW, and / or maximum aggregated bandwidth support.

[0193] The at least one trigger may be caused by / responsive to a determination, by the UE, that at least one condition has been met. Such a condition may comprise at least one of the UE’s radio capabilities changing (and hence necessitating a change of the UE’s UE radio capability information, e.g. locally changing the UE’s UE radio capability information and changing the UE’s UE radio capability information stored at the AMF and / or NW, by performing a procedure to change the UE capability information) .

[0194] In block 303, the UE transmits, to the network (e.g. to an NE such as a gNB) , an indication 315 that is indicative of an occurrence, whilst the UE is in the connected state, of a change in the UE’s radio capability information. In this regard, the UE may transmit, to the network, an indication 315 indicative that a trigger, to change the UE’s radio capability information, occurred whilst the UE is in the connected state.

[0195] The transmitting of the indication is based at least in part on the detecting block 302 (for example the transmitting may be caused to occur / be initiated based on or responsive to the detection of the change in the UE’s radio capability information, and / or a trigger to change UE’s radio capability information, whilst in the connected state) .

[0196] Advantageously, the transmission of such an indication thereby informs the network (e.g. gNB) that a change (and / or a trigger to change) the UE radio capability information occurred whilst the UE was in a connected state (e.g. RRC-connected state) . In this regard, the gNB may thereby be forewarned that the UE (due to the change / trigger occurring whilst the UE was in a connected state, and in accordance with the standard) will be transitioning out of a connected state (e.g. from a CM_CONNECTED into a CM-IDLE state -and hence transitioning out of an RRC_CONNECTED state into an RRC_IDLE state) . This may enable the gNB to take pre-emptive measures (e.g. the gNB may release / terminate its connection to the UE and or request / signal the UE to transition to an RRC_IDLE state) to avoid / mitigate a radio connection problem that may otherwise occur (e.g. due to the gNB maintaining its connection to the UE and receiving no responses from the UE for the gNB’s DL transmissions) and avoiding unnecessary DL and UL retransmissions and resource allocations. This may thereby enable avoiding wasting of radio resources and RAN KPI impact.

[0197] In some examples, the at least one indication is transmitted via at least one of: at least one UL signaling message; at least one RRC, message; or at least one UEAssistanceInformation RRC message.

[0198] In some examples (not shown in FIG. 3 but shown in FIG. 4) , the UE initiates a timer, wherein the timer is initiated at least in part in dependence on the transmitting, in block 303, of the at least one indication. In this regard, the timer may be started upon initiation of the transmission of the indication or upon successful transmission of the indication.

[0199] In some examples (not shown in FIG. 3 but shown in FIG. 4) the UE receives, from the network and prior to expiry of the timer, an indication (e.g. RRC Release message) to transition to another state (e.g. RRC_IDLE) . Responsive to receipt of the same, the UE transitions to the another state.

[0200] In some examples, the another state comprises at least one of: an idle state; a Radio Resource Control, RRC, idle state; an idle state with a core node of the network; or a Connection Management, CM, idle state.

[0201] In some examples (not shown in FIG. 3 but shown in FIG. 5) , the UE does receive an indication (e.g. RRC RELEASE) from the network to transition to another state prior to expiry of the timer. In such a case, the UE, upon determining that the timer has expired, transitions to the another state (e.g. an idle state such as an idle RRC state and / or an idle CM state such as RRC_IDLE and / or a CM_IDLE state) , wherein such a state transition is at least in part in dependence on / triggered by determining that the timer has expired.

[0202] In some examples, (not shown in FIG. 3 but shown in FIGs. 4 and 5) after the UE has transitioned to the another state (e.g. RRC_IDLE) , the UE changes its UE radio context information. In this regard, the UE may proceed to perform a procedure to change its UE Radio Capability information e.g. via carrying out a NAS registration procedure. In this regard, the UE may generate new / further UE Radio Capability information and locally store the same. The UE may transmit, to the network (e.g. towards an AMF, e.g. via a gNB) , the new / further UE Radio Capability information (which is stored at the AMF and gNB) .

[0203] In some examples, the time duration of the timer (i.e. a timer expiry value) is at least one of: received, from the network, via dedicated signaling (e.g. via at least one RRCReconfiguration message) ; received, from the network, via broadcast signaling (e.g. via at least one SIB) ; zero seconds (i.e. the timer expiry value equals 0) ; pre-determined; determined by the UE; or defined in a standard.

[0204] In some examples, the UE receives, from the network, information indicative of the time duration (e.g. a timer expiration value, which in some examples could have a value of zero) .

[0205] In some examples, the receipt of the information indicative of the time duration triggers the UE to perform the procedure 311. In this regard, the UE performs the procedure 311 at least in part in response receiving the information indicative of the time duration, i.e. the receipt of the time duration prompts the UE to perform the procedure 311.

[0206] In some examples, the procedure 311 is performed at least in part in dependence on receiving, from the network, an indication to perform the procedure.

[0207] In some examples, the UE transmits, to the network, information indicative of at least one capability of the UE to perform the procedure 311. In this regard, the UE may provide capability information indicative of the UE’s capability to carry out / support the procedure 311. The UE’s transmission of such capability information may be responsive to receiving a request for such capability information from the network.

[0208] In some examples, it may be specified which particular / specific changes in the UE Radio Capability information triggers the UE to transmit (in block 303) the indication 314. Such changes may be, for example, changes in: carrier aggregation, dual connectivity, MIMO configuration, frequency band, MUSIM, number of CCs, maximum BW and maximum aggregated bandwidth supported. In this regard, the UE’s detection, in block 302, of the change to its radio capability information (e.g. the UE’s detection of at least one trigger to change the radio capability information) occurred whilst the UE is in the connected state may comprise determining that a radio capability of the UE that has changed is a particular / specific radio capability, e.g. one from a set of one or more radio capabilities (that the network may configure the UE with) . The indication 315 may then be transmitted at least in part in dependence on determining that the particular / specific radio capability that changed is associated with a radio capability from a set of radio capabilities received from the network.

[0209] FIG. 4 illustrates an example of a signaling diagram showing signaling (between a UE 110, a gNB 120, and core node 130) and a procedure 400 for handling a UE Radio Capability change happening when the UE is in an RRC_CONNECTED state.

[0210] In the example of FIG. 4, when the change of the UE Radio Capability information (and / or a trigger to change of the UE Radio Capability information) happens whilst the UE is in RRC_CONNECTED state, the UE indicates this to the gNB via transmitting an indication of the same to the gNB, namely via the transmission of RRC: UEAssistanceInformation (trigger to change RC indication) in message 5. In this regard, the UE, whilst in the RRC_CONNECTED state, indicates to the gNB that a change in the UE Radio Capability information has been triggered whilst the UE is in the RRC_CONNECTED state.

[0211] In broad overview, in response to a UE Radio Capability change (and / or UE Radio Capability change trigger) happening when the UE is in an RRC_CONNECTED state, the UE sends an indication of the same to the gNB. In other words, upon determining that a UE Radio Capability change (and / or trigger to change) occurred whilst the UE is in an RRC_CONNECTED state, the UE sends an indication, to the gNB, that a UE Radio Capability change (and / or trigger to change) has occurred whilst the UE is in an RRC_CONNECTED state. The UE thereby informs the gNB that the change of (and / or trigger to change) the UE Radio Capability information happened in an RRC_CONNECTED state. This enables the gNB to transition the UE to RRC_IDLE state via signaling (i.e. message 6’s RRCRelease) . Once the transition is completed the UE changes its UE Radio Capability information in RRC_IDLE state.

[0212] As will be appreciated, the procedure 400 effectively comprises an example of the procedure 311 discussed above –in particular in the scenario wherein, following receipt of the indication indicative of the occurrence of the change (and / or trigger to change) whilst the UE is in a connected state (i.e. message 5) , the gNB sends a message to the UE to transition to an idle state (i.e. message 6) .

[0213] As used herein, references to the gNB performing an action may be considered as corresponding to a RAN or NW performing the action. For example, references to transmitting information to / receiving information from the gNB may be equated to transmitting information to / receiving information from the RAN or NW.

[0214] Discussing the procedure and signaling of FIG. 4 in more detail.

[0215] As shown with respect to message 1, the UE, whilst in an RRC_CONNECTED state, receives an enquiry from the gNB, namely an RRC: UECapabilityEnquiry message.

[0216] As shown with respect to message 2, the UE responds to the enquiry with an RRC: UECapabilityInformation message that includes an indication that the UE supports a ‘trigger to change RC indication’ procedure. In this regard, the ‘trigger to change RC indication’ procedure effectively relates to block 4 and message 5 discussed below. The UECapabilityEnquiry and UECapabilityInformation response procedure may be performed at earlier time and the gNB may utilize a stored Radio Capability.

[0217] As shown with respect to message 3, the UE, receives, from the gNB, an RRCReconfiguration message for configuring and / or requesting the UE to apply / use / perform the ‘trigger to change RC indication’ procedure. The gNB may transmit the RRCReconfiguration message to the UE in dependence on receipt, from the UE, of an indication of the capability to support the procedure, which may be transmitted in message 2. With message 3, gNB sends configuration information to the UE for configuring the UE to perform a procedure in which the UE indicates to the gNB whether a trigger for UE Radio Capability information happened in RRC_CONNECTED state.

[0218] The RRCReconfiguration message 3 may also comprise parameter (s) for the procedure, not least for example parameters related to a timer (t) , i.e. timer expiry value (whose use is discussed below) . In some examples, the timer expiry value may be equal to zero. In some examples, rather than being configured, by the gNB, with the timer expiry value via dedicated signaling such as an RRCReconfiguration message; instead the UE is configured with the timer expiry value via broadcast signaling, e.g. SIB (s) . In some examples the timer expiry value is not signaled but instead is specified in the standards or left to implementation.

[0219] In some examples, it is specified which are the changes in UE Radio Capability information that trigger the UE to transmit the indication or that allow the UE to transmit the indication (of message 5) . Such changes may be for example changes in carrier aggregation, dual connectivity, MIMO, band, MUSIM, number of CCs, maximum BW and maximum aggregated bandwidth supported by the UE.

[0220] The UE apply / use / perform the ‘trigger to change RC indication’ procedure in response to being requested to do so by virtue of the receipt of parameter (s) for the procedure from the gNB via the dedicated signaling, i.e. the RRCReconfiguration message. Alternatively, the UE may apply / use / perform the ‘trigger to change RC indication’ procedure in response to being requested to do so by virtue of the receipt of parameter (s) for the procedure from the gNB via broadcast signaling e.g. SIB (s) . In this regard, the presence of the timer expiry parameter value for the procedure in DL signaling may indicate that the UE is to apply / use / perform the ‘trigger to change RC indication’ procedure.

[0221] In block 4, (which broadly corresponds to block 302 of FIG 3) , the UE, whilst in RRC_CONNECTED state, is triggered to change its UE Radio Capability information and the determines that the trigger happens whilst the UE is in the RRC_CONNECTED state.

[0222] As shown with respect to message 5 (which broadly corresponds to indication 315 FIG 3) , the UE, whilst in RRC_CONNECTED state, indicates to the gNB that a change in the UE Radio Capability information is triggered. The UE indicates this to the gNB in the form of an UL signaling message. In this regard, the UE provides assistance information to the gNB by transmitting RRC: UEAssistanceInformation which comprises a ‘trigger to change RC’ indication, i.e. an indication that the trigger to change UE Radio Capability information happened in RRC_CONNECTED state.

[0223] After successful transmission, or upon initiation of the transmission, of the indication (message 3) , the UE may start the timer (if configured via message 3) .

[0224] The gNB may likewise start a timer at the same time, i.e. upon successful reception of message 5’s indication. In some examples, the gNB ‘gracefully finishes’ ongoing data transmissions and / or signaling procedures associated with the UE within the time period given by the timer expiry value. Such graceful finishing may, for example refer to the gNB: not starting any new transmissions to the UE (apart from possibly a RRCRelease message) , finishing all ‘old’ pending transmissions and re-transmissions to the UE, transmitting Acknowledgements and waiting until a final outcome of signaling procedures with the UE.

[0225] The gNB’s timer may be started at reception of the indication from UE and the timer’s expiry period may be adjusted to account for transmission delays.

[0226] After receipt of the indication of message 5, (and after the gNB gracefully finishing its ongoing data transmissions / signalling procedures associated with the UE and before expiry of the timer) , the gNB’s releases the UE RRC connection via the sending of a RRCRelease message to the UE from the gNB (as shown with respect to message 6) as well as via the exchange of messages 7, 8 and 9 with the core node.

[0227] In some examples (not shown in FIG. 4) the gNB gracefully finishes ongoing data transmissions and / or signaling procedures associated with the UE within the time period and it releases the radio connection locally, i.e. without transmission of an RRCRelease message to the UE.

[0228] In some examples (not shown in FIG. 4) the gNB releases the radio connection, with or without transmission of RRCRelease message, after / upon the expiry of the timer.

[0229] As shown with respect to message 7, the gNB transmits, via Next Generation Application Protocol, NGAP, a UE CONTEXT RELEASE REQUEST message to the core node.

[0230] As shown with respect to message 8, in dependence on / responsive to the UE CONTEXT RELEASE REQUEST message, the core node transmits, via NGAP, a UE CONTEXT RELEASE COMMAND message to the gNB.

[0231] As shown with respect to message 9, in dependence on / responsive to the UE CONTEXT RELEASE COMMAND message, the UE’s (old) context is released and the gNB transmits, via NGAP, a UE CONTEXT RELEASE COMPLETE message to the core node.

[0232] Before the expiry of the timer, the UE transitions to an RRC_IDLE state.

[0233] In block 10, following the UE’s transition to the RRC_IDLE state, the UE changes its UE Radio Capability information in the RRC_IDLE state. The change may be made locally at the UE side. In this regard, the UE may create new UE Radio Capability information (and it may also keep the old UE Radio Capability information) . A NAS Registration may then be triggered (that may have some special parametrization) to inform the network about the new / updated Radio Capability information. The process of changing the UE Radio Capability information may thereby involve establishing a new RRC connection and effecting the NAS Registration procedure 11.

[0234] FIG. 5 illustrates an example of a signaling diagram showing signaling (between a UE 110, a gNB 120, and core node 130) and a procedure 500 for handling a UE Radio Capability change happening when the UE is in an RRC_CONNECTED state.

[0235] As with the procedure 400 of FIG. 4, in the procedure 500 of FIG. 5, when the change of (and / or trigger to change) the UE Radio Capability information occurs whilst the UE is in RRC_CONNECTED state, the UE indicates the same to the gNB. In other words, the UE, whilst in the RRC_CONNECTED state, indicates to the gNB that a change in the UE Radio Capability information has occurred (and / or that the change has been triggered) .

[0236] The signaling and procedure of FIG. 5 is, in many ways, similar to the signaling and procedure of FIG. 4. However, in the procedure 400 of FIG. 4, the gNB releases the UE RRC connection by sending, before the timer (t) expires, an RRCRelease message (message 6) to the UE. Whereas, by contrast, in the procedure 500 of FIG. 5, the gNB does not release the UE RRC connection before the timer expires, nor does the gNB send an RRCRelease message to the UE before the timer expires. In FIG. 5, instead of sending a RRCRelease message to the UE prior to the expiry of its timer, upon expiry of the timer, the UE locally changes its state to RRC_IDLE and the proceeds to carry out a procedure (schematically shown with regards to block 10 and NAS Registration procedure 11) to change its UE Radio Capability information. Also, the gNB, upon expiry of its timer, proceeds to carry out a procedure (schematically shown with regards to the exchange of messages 7, 8 and 9 with the core node) to release the UE’s context. Other than such differences, the procedure 500 of FIG. 5 and its signalling / messages are broadly similar to that of the FIG. 4.

[0237] In view of the similarity of signaling and procedure 400 of FIG. 4 with the signaling and procedure 500 of FIG. 5, it will be appreciated that much of the discussion and details concerning various of the messages, blocks and additional features / functionality described above in relation to FIG. 4 may be equally applicable to FIG. 5 mutatis mutandis. Accordingly, a discussion and details of the messages, blocks and features of FIG. 5 which correspond to those of FIG. 4 will not be repeated or described again in detail.

[0238] In indicated above, one aspect of the procedure 500 of FIG. 5 differs from that of the procedure 400 of FIG. 4 is that the transmission of message 6 of FIG. 4 does not occur in FIG. 5. Instead, when the UE’s timer expires, the UE (which until that time still remains in an RRC_CONNECTED state since the gNB has not released the RRC connection) locally changes its state to RRC_IDLE. In this regard, the UE transitions to an RRC_IDLE state in dependence on / responsive to the expiry of the timer. The UE then proceeds to change its UE Radio Capability information (i.e. in a similar manner to that as done in FIG. 4) . When the gNB’s timer expires, the gNB proceeds to release the UE’s RRC connection and release the UE’s context (i.e. in a similar manner to that as done in FIG. 4) . In this regard, the gNB releases the UE’s context and terminates the RRC connection in dependence on / responsive to the expiry of the gNB’s timer.

[0239] In each of FIGs. 3, 4 and 5, the indication that is sent to the gNB (namely in response to a change of (and / or trigger to change) UE Radio Capability information occurring whilst the UE is in an RRC connected state) is an indication that is indicative of the fact that the change of (and / or trigger to change) UE Radio Capability information occurred whilst the UE is in an RRC connected state.

[0240] As will be set out below, in each of FIGs. 6, 7 and 8, an indication that is sent to the gNB (namely in response to a change of, and / or a trigger to change, UE Radio Capability information occurring whilst the UE is in an RRC connected state) is an indication that is:

[0241] indicative of a request to change states (e.g. from an RRC connected state to an RRC idle state) ; and / or

[0242] indicative of a preferred state (e.g. a preferred state that the UE would like to transition to, e.g. an RRC idle state) .

[0243] FIG. 6 schematically illustrates an example of a procedure and a signaling framework , 600 between a UE 110, and the network, NW 100 (e.g. a network entity, NE, 102 such as a gNB 120 serving the UE) for supporting the procedure.

[0244] The signaling and procedure of FIG. 6 is, in many ways, similar to the signaling and procedure of FIG. 3. However, in block 303 of FIG. 3, the UE transmits an indication 315 that the change of (and / or trigger to change) UE radio capability information occurred whilst the UE is in a connected state, wherein the indication 315 is transmitted in dependence on / responsive to detecting / determining that the change / trigger occurred whilst the UE is in the connected state. By contrast, in block 603 of FIG. 6, rather than transmitting such an indication 315, instead the UE transmits an alternative indication 616. This alternative indication 616 may be indicative of a request 616_1 to transition to another state (e.g. a release request to transition into another state such as an idle state for example an idle RRC and / or CM state, for instance RRC_IDLE and / or CM_IDLE) , wherein the request is sent in dependence on / responsive to determining that the change / trigger occurred whilst the UE is in the connected state. The indication 616 may alternatively or additionally comprise an indication 616_2 of a preferred state, i.e. a preferred state that the UE would like to be transitioned to (e.g. an idle state such as RRC_IDLE and / or CM_IDLE)

[0245] In view of the similarity of signaling 300 and procedure of FIG. 3 with the signaling 600 and procedure of FIG. 6, it will be appreciated that much of the discussion and details concerning various of the blocks and additional features / functionality described above in relation to FIG. 3 may be equally applicable to FIG. 6 mutatis mutandis (e.g. not least such as replacing references to FIG. 3’s indication 314 with FIG. 6’s request 614) . Accordingly, a discussion and details of the blocks and features of FIG. 6 which correspond to those of FIG. 3 will not be repeated or described again in detail.

[0246] In some examples, the indication 616 comprises a request to at least one of: transition out of the connected state; or transition to another state. In some examples, the another state comprises at least one of: an idle state; an idle state with an access node (e.g. gNB) of the network; an RRC idle state; an idle state with a core node (e.g. AMF) of the network; or a CM idle state.

[0247] In some examples, the indication 616 may take the form of assistance information sent to the gNB, e.g. an RRC message such as an UEAssistanceInformation RRC message, that may be indicative of a request to transition to an idle state and / or that may include a ReleasePreference information element containing a preferredRRC-State equal to idle.

[0248] In some examples, an indication of a preferred state that the UE requests to be transitioned to may be transmitted separately of the request for state transition . In some examples, the indication of the preferred transitioned state is transmitted in dependence on / responsive to determining that the change / trigger occurred whilst the UE is in the connected state.

[0249] FIG. 7 illustrates an example of a signaling diagram showing signaling (between a UE 110, a gNB 120, and core node 130) and a procedure 700 for handling a UE Radio Capability change happening when the UE is in an RRC_CONNECTED state.

[0250] The signaling and procedure of FIG. 7 is, in many ways, similar to the signaling and procedure of FIG. 4. However, whereas in FIG. 4, the UE transmits an indication that a change of the UE’s radio capability information (and / or a trigger to change the same) occurred whilst the UE is in a connected state (i.e. transmission of message 5 of FIG. 4 –which corresponds to the indication 314 of FIG. 3) , in FIG. 7, rather than transmitting such an indication, instead the UE transmits an alternative indication (message 5 of FIG. 7) , namely one that indicates:

[0251] a request to transition to another state (e.g. a release request to transition into another state such as an idle state for example an idle RRC and / or CM state for instance an RRC_IDLE state and / or a CM_IDLE state) ; and / or

[0252] a preferred state that the UE would like to transition to (e.g. an idle state such as an RRC_IDLE state and / or a CM_IDLE state) .

[0253] As shown in FIG. 7, the indication / message 5 may be, for example, an assistance information RRC message such as “RRC: UEAssistanceInformation (ReleasePreference {preferredRRC-State=idle} ) ” .

[0254] In view of the similarity of signaling and procedure 400 of FIG. 4 with the signaling and procedure 700 of FIG. 7, it will be appreciated that much of the discussion and details concerning various of the messages, blocks and additional features / functionality described above in relation to FIG. 4 may be equally applicable to FIG. 7 mutatis mutandis. Accordingly, a discussion and details of the messages, blocks and features of FIG. 7 which correspond to those of FIG. 4 will not be repeated or described again in detail.

[0255] Other than the difference in message 5 (namely transmitting, in dependence on determining that the at least one change of, and / or trigger to change, the UE’s radio capability information occurred whilst the UE is in the connected state, a state transition request and / or preferred state rather than FIG. 4’s indication that a change / trigger occurred during a connected state) , the other main differences are that in FIG. 7:

[0256] · message 2’s UE’s RRC: UECapabilityInformation message (which is sent to the gNB responsive the gNB’s UE capability enquiry) includes an indication that the UE supports a ‘release request’ procedure and / or a “release preference / preferred state” procedure. In this regard, the ‘release / transition state request’ procedure and / or “release preference / preferred state” procedure effectively relate to the block 4 and message 5 of FIG. 7 (i.e. concerning the UE’s trigger-based sending of a state transition request or a preferred state to change to) ;

[0257] · message 3’s RRCReconfiguration message (which may be sent from the gNB to the UE in dependence on the capability information sent by the UE to the gNB in message 2) is for configuring and / or requesting the UE to apply / use / perform the ‘release / transition state request’ and / or ‘preferred state’ procedure. This message may comprise an indication of the state to which the UE is to transition to (e.g. RRC_IDLE) upon determination of the change of (and / or trigger to change) the UE’s radio capability information occurring whilst the UE is in an RRC_CONNECTED state;

[0258] · the gNB may not itself utilise a timer –though it may still configure the UE with a timer as per FIG. 3.

[0259] FIG. 8 illustrates an example of a signaling diagram showing signaling (between a UE 110, a gNB 120, and core node 130) and a procedure 800 for handling a UE Radio Capability change happening when the UE is in an RRC_CONNECTED state.

[0260] As with the procedure 700 of FIG. 7, in the procedure 800 of FIG. 8, when the change of (and / or trigger to change) the UE Radio Capability information occurs whilst the UE is in RRC_CONNECTED state, the UE transmits, to the gNB, a request to change state. However, in the procedure 700 of FIG. 7, the gNB releases the UE RRC connection by sending, before the timer (which is initiated upon the transmission of the state transition request in message 5) expires, an RRCRelease message to the UE. Whereas, by contrast, in the procedure 800 of FIG. 8, the gNB does not release the UE RRC connection before the timer expires (or indeed the gNB does not even have / initiate such a timer, let along take any action in response to the expiry of such a timer) . The gNB takes no action in response to the receipt of the indication. In this regard, the gNB does not: initiate a timer, send an RRCRelease message to the UE, nor send a UE Context Release request message to the CN. In effect, apart from the transmission of messages 1, 2 and 3, and receiving message 5, the gNB operates in a similar manner to that of legacy procedure shown in FIG. 2 –leading to a wastage of radio resources.

[0261] Message 1, 2, 3 and 5 and block 4 of FIG. 8 corresponds to messages 1, 2, 3, and 5 and block 4 of FIG. 7 and hence the discussion and details concerning these messages, blocks and additional features / functionality described above in relation to FIG. 7 may be equally applicable to FIG. 8 mutatis mutandis. Accordingly, a discussion and details of such messages, blocks and features of FIG. 8 which correspond to those of FIG. 7 will not be repeated or described again in detail.

[0262] In FIG. 8, following on from message 5, and following an expiry of the UE’s timer (during which time the UE does not receive a response from the gNB to the UE’s request to change state) , the UE (which until that time still remains in an RRC_CONNECTED state since the gNB has not released the RRC connection) locally changes its state to RRC_IDLE. In this regard, the UE transitions to an RRC_IDLE state in dependence on / responsive to the expiry of the timer. The UE then proceeds, in block 10, to change its UE Radio Capability information (i.e. in a similar manner to the UE behavior of each of FIGs. 4 to 7) . In this regard, block 10 and NAS Registration procedure 11 of FIG. 8 corresponds to block 10 and NAS Registration procedure 11 of FIGs. 4 to 7.

[0263] Following on from NAS Registration procedure 11 between the UE and core node, the core node may detect a double NGAP connection.

[0264] In message 12, the core node transmits, via NGAP, a UE CONTEXT RELEASE COMMAND message to the gNB. This may be in dependence on / responsive to the detection of the double NGAP connection.

[0265] In message 13, in dependence on / responsive to the UE CONTEXT RELEASE COMMAND message, the UE’s (old) context is released and the gNB transmits, via NGAP, a UE CONTEXT RELEASE COMPLETE message to the core node.

[0266] The procedures and signaling diagrams of FIGs. 3 to 8 can be considered to illustrate a plurality of methods, in the sense that each procedure and signaling diagram can be considered to illustrate one or more actions, processes or performed by / at a plurality of actors / entities (e.g. the UE and the network / network entity such as gNB) . The procedures and signaling diagrams can therefore be considered to illustrate a plurality of individual methods performed by each respective individual actor / entity of the plurality of the actors / entities.

[0267] The blocks and steps illustrated in FIGs. 3 to 8 can represent actions in a method, functionality performed by an apparatus, and / or sections of instructions, program or code. The illustration of a particular order to the blocks does not necessarily imply that there is a required or preferred order for the blocks and the order and arrangement of the block may be varied. Furthermore, it may be possible for some blocks to be omitted.

[0268] It will be understood that each block and combinations of blocks illustrated in FIGs. 3 to 8 as well as the further functionality described herein, can be implemented by various means, such as hardware, firmware, and / or software including instructions, program, or code. For example, one or more of the functions described above can be performed by a duly configured apparatus (such as an apparatus [as shown in FIG. 9] comprising means for performing the above described functionality) . One or more of the functions / functionality described above can be embodied by duly configured instructions, program, or code (such as the instructions, program, or code as shown in FIG. 10] which embody the functions / functionality described above and which can be stored by a memory storage device and performed by a processor) .

[0269] As will be appreciated, any such instructions, program, or code can be loaded onto a computer or other programmable apparatus (i.e. hardware) to produce a machine, such that the instructions, program, or code when performed on the programmable apparatus create means for implementing the functions / functionality specified in the blocks. These instructions, program, or code can also be stored in a computer-readable medium that can direct a programmable apparatus to function in a particular manner, such that the instructions, program, or code stored in the computer-readable memory produce an article of manufacture including means which implement the function specified in the blocks. The instructions, program, or code can also be loaded onto a programmable apparatus to cause a series of operational actions to be performed on the programmable apparatus to produce a computer-implemented process such that the instructions, program, or code which are performed on the programmable apparatus provide actions for implementing the functions / functionality specified in the blocks.

[0270] The above described component blocks and step (e.g. of the signaling diagrams) are functional and the functions, along with the further functions / functionalities described above, can be performed by a single physical entity (such as an apparatus as is described with reference to FIG. 9, which may be embodied in / as a UE or gNB) . The functions described can also be implemented by a computer program (such as is described with reference to FIG. 10, which may be executed by a processor of a UE, or gNB) .

[0271] FIG. 9 schematically illustrates a block diagram of an apparatus 10 for performing the methods, processes, procedures and signaling described in the present disclosure, not least as illustrated in FIGs. 3 to 8. In this regard the apparatus can perform the roles of an entity (such as: UE or gNB) in the illustrated and above described methods.

[0272] The component blocks of FIG. 9 are functional and the functions described can be performed by a single physical entity, not least such as a UE or gNB.

[0273] The apparatus comprises a controller 11, which could be provided within a device / entity, not least such as a UE or gNB.

[0274] The controller 11 can be embodied by a computing device, not least such as those mentioned above. In some, but not necessarily all examples, the apparatus can be embodied as a chip, chip set, circuitry or module, i.e. for use in any of the foregoing. As used here ‘module’ refers to a unit or apparatus that excludes certain parts / components that would be added by an end manufacturer or a user.

[0275] Implementation of the controller 11 can be as controller circuitry. The controller 11 can be implemented in hardware alone, have certain aspects in software including firmware alone or can be a combination of hardware and software (including firmware) .

[0276] The controller 11 can be implemented using instructions, program, or code that enable hardware functionality, for example, by using executable instructions, program or code 14 in a general-purpose or special-purpose processor 12 that can be stored on a computer readable storage medium 13, for example memory, or disk etc, to be executed by such a processor 12.

[0277] The processor 12 is configured to read from and write to the memory 13. The processor 12 can also comprise an output interface via which data and / or commands are output by the processor 12 and an input interface via which data and / or commands are input to the processor 12. The apparatus can be coupled to or comprise one or more other components 15 (not least for example: a radio transceiver, sensors, input / output user interface elements and / or other modules / devices / components for inputting and outputting data / commands) .

[0278] The memory 13 stores instructions, program, or code 14 that controls the operation of the apparatus 10 when loaded into the processor 12. The instructions, program or code 14 provide the logic and routines that enables the apparatus to perform the methods, processes and procedures described in the present disclosure and illustrated in FIGs. 3 to 8. The processor 12 by reading the memory 13 is able to load and execute the instructions, program or code 14.

[0279] The instructions, program, or code may be comprised in a computer program, a non-transitory computer readable medium, a computer program product, a machine readable medium. The term “non-transitory, ” as used herein, is a limitation of the medium itself (i.e. tangible, not a signal) as opposed to a limitation on data storage persistency (e.g. RAM vs. ROM) . In some but not necessarily all examples, the instructions, program, or code may be distributed over more than one computer program.

[0280] Although the memory 13 is illustrated as a single component / circuitry it can be implemented as one or more separate components / circuitry some or all of which can be integrated / removable and / or can provide permanent / semi-permanent / dynamic / cached storage.

[0281] Although the processor 12 is illustrated as a single component / circuitry it can be implemented as one or more separate components / circuitry some or all of which can be integrated / removable. The processor 12 can be a single core or multi-core processor.

[0282] The apparatus can include one or more components for effecting the methods, processes and procedures described in the present disclosure and illustrated in FIGs. 3 to 8. It is contemplated that the functions of these components can be combined in one or more components or performed by other components of equivalent functionality. The description of a function should additionally be considered to also disclose any means suitable for performing that function.

[0283] Where a structural feature has been described, it can be replaced by means for performing one or more of the functions of the structural feature whether that function or those functions are explicitly or implicitly described.

[0284] Although examples of the apparatus have been described above in terms of comprising various components, it should be understood that the components can be embodied as or otherwise controlled by a corresponding controller or circuitry such as one or more processing elements or processors of the apparatus. In this regard, each of the components described above can be one or more of any device, means or circuitry embodied in hardware, software or a combination of hardware and software that is configured to perform the corresponding functions of the respective components as described above.

[0285] The apparatus can, for example, be: a user equipment, base station or network node of a mobile cellular telecommunication system. The apparatus can be embodied by a computing device, not least such as those mentioned above. However, in some examples, the apparatus can be embodied as a chip, chip set, circuitry or module, i.e. for use in any of the foregoing.

[0286] In one example, the apparatus is embodied on a client device, a UE, a mobile cellular telephone, a hand held portable electronic device, a mobile communication device, a wearable computing device or a personal digital assistant, that can additionally provide one or more audio / text / video communication functions (for example tele-communication, video-communication, and / or text transmission (Short Message Service (SMS)  / Multimedia Message Service (MMS)  / emailing) functions) , interactive / non-interactive viewing functions (for example web-browsing, navigation, TV / program viewing functions) , music recording / playing functions (for example Moving Picture Experts Group-1 Audio Layer 3 (MP3) or other format and / or (frequency modulation / amplitude modulation) radio broadcast recording / playing) , downloading / sending of data functions, image capture function (for example using a (for example in-built) digital camera) , and gaming functions, or any combination thereof.

[0287] In some examples (such as wherein the apparatus is provided within a UE 110) , the apparatus 10 comprises:

[0288] at least one processor 12; and

[0289] at least one memory 13 storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor 12, cause the apparatus at least to:

[0338] References to ‘computer-readable storage medium’ , ‘computer program product’ , ‘tangibly embodied computer program’ etc. or a ‘controller’ , ‘computer’ , ‘processor’ etc. should be understood to encompass not only computers having different architectures such as single  / multi-processor architectures and sequential (Von Neumann)  / parallel architectures but also specialized circuits such as field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA) , application specific circuits (ASIC) , signal processing devices and other processing circuitry including quantum processing circuitry. References to computer program, instructions, code etc. should be understood to encompass software for a programmable processor or firmware such as, for example, the programmable content of a hardware device whether instructions for a processor, or configuration settings for a fixed-function device, gate array or programmable logic device etc.

[0339] As used in this application, the term ‘circuitry’ can refer to one or more or all of the following:

[0340] (a) hardware-only circuitry implementations (such as implementations in analog, digital and / or quantum circuitry) and

[0341] (b) combinations of hardware circuit (s) and software, such as (as applicable) :

[0342] (i) a combination of analog, digital and / or quantum hardware circuit (s) with software / firmware and

[0343] (ii) any or all portions of hardware processor (s) (including digital and / or quantum processor (s) ) , with software, and memory (ies) that work together to cause an apparatus, such as a mobile device, computing device, or server, to perform various functions and

[0344] (c) any or all portions of hardware circuit (s) , such as a microprocessor (s) , processor (s) and / or quantum processor (s) , that require software (for example firmware) for operation, but the software may not be present when it is not needed for operation.

[0345] This definition of circuitry applies to all uses of this term in this application, including in any claims. As a further example, as used in this application, the term circuitry also covers an implementation of merely a hardware circuit or processor (or multiple processors) or portion of a hardware circuit or processor and its (or their) accompanying software and / or firmware. The term circuitry also covers, for example and if applicable to a particular claim element, a baseband integrated circuit or processor integrated circuit for a mobile device or a similar integrated circuit in a server, a cellular network device, or other computing or network device.

[0346] Although various examples of the present disclosure have been described in the preceding paragraphs, it should be appreciated that modifications to the examples given can be made without departing from the scope of the invention as set out in the claims.

[0347] Various, but not necessarily all, examples of the present disclosure can take the form of a method, an apparatus, or a computer program. Accordingly, various, but not necessarily all, examples can be implemented in hardware, software or a combination of hardware and software.

[0348] Various, but not necessarily all, examples of the present disclosure are described using flowchart illustrations and schematic block diagrams. It will be understood that each block (of the flowchart illustrations and block diagrams) , and combinations of blocks, can be implemented by computer program instructions of a computer program. These program instructions can be provided to one or more processor (s) , processing circuitry or controller (s) such that the instructions which execute on the same create means for causing implementing the functions specified in the block or blocks, i.e. such that the method can be computer implemented. The computer program instructions can be executed by the processor (s) to cause a series of operational block / steps / actions to be performed by the processor (s) to produce a computer implemented process such that the instructions which execute on the processor (s) provide block / steps for implementing the functions specified in the block or blocks.

[0349] Accordingly, the blocks support: combinations of means for performing the specified functions; combinations of actions for performing the specified functions; and computer program instructions / algorithm for performing the specified functions. It will also be understood that each block, and combinations of blocks, can be implemented by special purpose hardware-based systems which perform the specified functions or actions, or combinations of special purpose hardware and computer program instructions.

[0350] Various, but not necessarily all, examples of the present disclosure provide both a method and corresponding apparatus comprising various modules, means or circuitry that provide the functionality for performing / applying the actions of the method. The modules, means or circuitry can be implemented as hardware, or can be implemented as software or firmware to be performed by a computer processor. In the case of firmware or software, examples of the present disclosure can be provided as a computer program product including a computer readable storage structure embodying computer program instructions (i.e. the software or firmware) thereon for performing by the computer processor.

[0351] Although specific terms are employed herein, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only and not for purposes of limitation.

[0352] Features described in the preceding description can be used in combinations other than the combinations explicitly described.

[0353] Although functions have been described with reference to certain features, those functions can be performable by other features whether described or not.

[0354] Although features have been described with reference to certain examples, those features can also be present in other examples whether described or not. Accordingly, features described in relation to one example / aspect of the disclosure can include any or all of the features described in relation to another example / aspect of the disclosure, and vice versa, to the extent that they are not mutually inconsistent.

[0355] The term ‘comprise’ is used in this document with an inclusive not an exclusive meaning. That is any reference to X comprising Y indicates that X can comprise only one Y or can comprise more than one Y. If it is intended to use ‘comprise’ with an exclusive meaning then it will be made clear in the context by referring to “comprising only one ... ” or by using “consisting” .

[0356] In this description, the wording ‘connect’ and ‘communication’ and their derivatives mean operationally connected / in communication. It should be appreciated that any number or combination of intervening components can exist (including no intervening components) , i.e. so as to provide direct or indirect connection / coupling / communication. Any such intervening components can include hardware and / or software components.

[0357] As used herein, the term "determine / determining" (and grammatical variants thereof) can include, not least: evaluating, calculating, computing, processing, deriving, measuring, investigating, identifying, looking up (for example, looking up in a table, a database or another data structure) , ascertaining and the like. Also, "determining" can include receiving (for example, receiving information) , retrieving / accessing (for example, retrieving / accessing data in a memory) , obtaining and the like. Also, "determine / determining" can include resolving, selecting, choosing, establishing, inferring and the like.

[0358] As used herein, a description of an action should also be considered to disclose enabling, and / or causing, and / or controlling that action. For example, a description of transmitting information should also be considered to disclose enabling, and / or causing, and / or controlling transmitting information. Similarly, for example, a description of an apparatus transmitting information should also be considered to disclose at least one means or controller of the apparatus enabling, and / or causing, and / or controlling the apparatus to transmit the information. ”

[0359] The term “means” as used in the description and in the claims may refer to one or more individual elements configured to perform the corresponding recited functionality or functionalities, or it may refer to several elements that perform such functionality or functionalities. Furthermore, several functionalities recited in the claims may be performed by the same individual means or the same combination of means. For example performing such functionality or functionalities may be caused in an apparatus by a processor that executes instructions stored in a memory of the apparatus.

[0360] References to a parameter, or value of a parameter, should be understood to refer to “data indicative of” , “data defining” or “data representative of” the relevant parameter / parameter value if not explicitly stated (unless the context demands otherwise) . The data may be in any way indicative of the relevant parameter / parameter value, and may be directly or indirectly indicative thereof.

[0361] In this description, reference has been made to various examples. The description of features or functions in relation to an example indicates that those features or functions are present in that example. The use of the term ’ example’ or ‘for example’ , ‘can’ or ‘may’ in the text denotes, whether explicitly stated or not, that such features or functions are present in at least the described example, whether described as an example or not, and that they can be, but are not necessarily, present in some or all other examples. Thus ‘example’ , ‘for example’ , ‘can’ or ‘may’ refers to a particular instance in a class of examples. A property of the instance can be a property of only that instance or a property of the class or a property of a sub-class of the class that includes some but not all of the instances in the class.

[0362] In this description, references to “a / an / the” [feature, element, component, means …] are used with an inclusive not an exclusive meaning and are to be interpreted as “at least one” [feature, element, component, means …] unless explicitly stated otherwise. That is any reference to X comprising a / the Y indicates that X can comprise only one Y or can comprise more than one Y unless the context clearly indicates the contrary. If it is intended to use ‘a’ or ‘the’ with an exclusive meaning then it will be made clear in the context. In some circumstances the use of ‘at least one’ or ‘one or more’ can be used to emphasise an inclusive meaning but the absence of these terms should not be taken to infer any exclusive meaning.

[0363] As used herein, “at least one of the following: <a list of two or more elements>” and “at least one of <a list of two or more elements>” and similar wording, where the list of two or more elements are joined by “and” or “or” , mean at least any one of the elements, or at least any two or more of the elements, or at least all the elements.

[0364] As used herein, the terms “the at least one” and “the one or more” mean “any one of the at least one” and “any one of the one or more” , respectively.

[0365] The presence of a feature (or combination of features) in a claim is a reference to that feature (or combination of features) itself and also to features that achieve substantially the same technical effect (equivalent features) . The equivalent features include, for example, features that are variants and achieve substantially the same result in substantially the same way. The equivalent features include, for example, features that perform substantially the same function, in substantially the same way to achieve substantially the same result.

[0366] In this description, reference has been made to various examples using adjectives or adjectival phrases to describe characteristics of the examples. Such a description of a characteristic in relation to an example indicates that the characteristic is present in some examples exactly as described and is present in other examples substantially as described.

[0367] In the above description, the apparatus described can alternatively or in addition comprise an apparatus which in some other examples comprises a distributed system of apparatus, for example, a client / server apparatus system. In examples where an apparatus provided forms (or a method is implemented as) a distributed system, each apparatus forming a component and / or part of the system provides (or implements) one or more features which collectively implement an example of the present disclosure. In some examples, an apparatus is re-configured by an entity other than its initial manufacturer to implement an example of the present disclosure by being provided with additional software, for example by a user downloading such software, which when executed causes the apparatus to implement an example of the present disclosure (such implementation being either entirely by the apparatus or as part of a system of apparatus as mentioned hereinabove) .

[0368] The above description describes some examples of the present disclosure however those of ordinary skill in the art will be aware of possible alternative structures and method features which offer equivalent functionality to the specific examples of such structures and features described herein above and which for the sake of brevity and clarity have been omitted from the above description. Nonetheless, the above description should be read as implicitly including reference to such alternative structures and method features which provide equivalent functionality unless such alternative structures or method features are explicitly excluded in the above description of the examples of the present disclosure.

[0369] Whilst endeavouring in the foregoing specification to draw attention to those features of examples of the present disclosure believed to be of particular importance it should be understood that the applicant claims protection in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to and / or shown in the drawings whether or not particular emphasis has been placed thereon.

[0370] The examples of the present disclosure and the accompanying claims can be suitably combined in any manner apparent to one of ordinary skill in the art. Separate references to an “example” , “in some examples” and / or the like in the description do not necessarily refer to the same example and are also not mutually exclusive unless so stated and / or except as will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art from the description. For instance, a feature, structure, process, block, step, action, or the like described in one example may also be included in other examples, but is not necessarily included.

[0371] Each and every claim is incorporated as further disclosure into the specification and the claims are embodiment (s) of the present disclosure. Further, while the claims herein are provided as comprising specific dependencies, it is contemplated that any claims can depend from any other claims and that to the extent that any alternative embodiments can result from combining, integrating, and / or omitting features of the various claims and / or changing dependencies of claims, any such alternative embodiments and their equivalents are also within the scope of the disclosure.
