A method for adding a network and a terminal device

[0001] This application claims priority to Chinese Patent Application No. 2025104834354, filed on April 16, 2025, entitled "A Method for Adding a Network and a Terminal Device", the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. Technical Field

[0002] This invention relates to the field of communication technology, and in particular to a network addition method and terminal device. Background Technology

[0003] 5G New Radio Carrier Aggregation (NRCA) is a wireless communication technology that significantly improves data transmission rates and spectral efficiency by aggregating multiple carriers (frequency bands) to create a wider bandwidth. According to the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) protocol, Intra-band NRCA requires the primary and secondary cells to maintain the same time slot ratio. Furthermore, for cost reasons, overlapping frequency bands are often designed so that terminal devices use the same radio frequency (RF) device, requiring the corresponding NRCA combinations to maintain the same time slot ratio. Currently, in these specific scenarios, when the primary and secondary cells of NRCA have different time slot ratios, terminal devices experience low efficiency when adding NRCA.

[0004] Therefore, it is necessary to study a network addition method to improve the efficiency of terminal devices accessing the network. Summary of the Invention

For example, a process, method, system, product, or apparatus that includes a series of steps or units is not limited to the listed steps or units, but may optionally include steps or units not listed, or may optionally include other steps or units inherent to these processes, methods, products, or apparatuses.

[0024] In this application, the reference to "embodiment" means that a specific feature, structure, or characteristic described in connection with an embodiment may be included in at least one embodiment of this application. It will be explicitly and implicitly understood by those skilled in the art that the embodiments described in this application can be combined with other embodiments.

[0025] First, let's introduce the terms used in the embodiments of this application.

[0026] Intra-band New Radio Carrier Aggregation (Intra-band NRCA) refers to the aggregation of multiple carriers within the same frequency band in 5G new wireless technology to improve data transmission rates and spectral efficiency. This carrier aggregation method allows combining multiple consecutive or non-consecutive subcarriers within the same frequency band, thereby increasing available spectrum resources and improving overall system performance. For example, in the FR1 band, multiple carriers within the n34 band are aggregated to achieve higher data throughput. The technical solution provided in this application is applied to the above-mentioned intra-band carrier aggregation scenario.

[0027] The time slot allocation (tdd_UL-DL-configuration-common) is a configuration parameter for a cell, used to define the uplink and downlink time slot configuration in a TDD system.

[0028] The primary cell is typically the initial cell that user equipment first connects to. It plays a central role in the Master Cell Group (MCG), responsible for signaling connections with the core network. While there may be multiple cells within an MCG, the primary cell is the most important and is used for initial access.

[0029] Secondary cells can be configured within an MCG or a Secondary Cell Group (SCG). The primary function of a secondary cell is to extend data bandwidth through carrier aggregation to accommodate changing traffic patterns. Once a user equipment enters connected mode, one or more secondary cells can be configured and quickly activated or deactivated as needed.

[0030] TDD is a duplex technology in wireless communication that uses time-division multiplexing to transmit uplink and downlink signals. In TDD mode, receiving and transmitting signals share the same frequency channel but are distinguished by different time slots. For example, within a time period, a base station may transmit downlink signals in the first half of the time and receive uplink signals in the second half.

[0031] Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD) is a duplexing technology in wireless communication that allocates two independent frequency channels for uplink and downlink, respectively for signal transmission from the base station to the user equipment and from the user equipment to the base station.

[0032] Radio Resource Control (RRC) reconfiguration messages are a key mechanism in wireless communication used to dynamically adjust radio resource allocation and parameter settings.

[0033] In certain special scenarios, when the primary and secondary cells of NRCA are configured with different time slot ratios, carrier aggregation (CA) may fail to be added due to protocol limitations or shared RF devices. The specific background is as follows:

[0034] 1. According to the 3GPP protocol, the primary and secondary cells of NRCA within a frequency band must maintain the same time slot ratio. When the time slot ratio is inconsistent, the secondary cell cannot be successfully added due to the failure of the Information Element (IE) verification.

[0035] 2. Considering cost reasons, the same RF device will be used in the hardware design for frequency bands such as n48 and n77 where there is frequency overlap, and the same time slot ratio needs to be maintained in the corresponding NRCA combination.

[0036] Current solutions to this problem typically involve adjusting network configurations to maintain consistency, or require modifications at the hardware or firmware level. These solutions suffer from operational complexity, high costs, and the need for hardware or firmware modifications. These issues impact the efficiency of network deployment and maintenance, and can lead to network instability and a degraded user experience.

[0037] In view of the above problems, this application provides a network registration method that can improve the efficiency of terminal devices accessing the network. The method provided by this application is described in detail below.

[0038] Please refer to Figure 1, which is a flowchart illustrating a network addition method provided in an embodiment of this application. This flowchart illustrates the process by which a terminal device adds a network via NRCA by modifying the time slot allocation of a cell due to protocol limitations. The terminology used in this method can be found above and will not be repeated here. The steps involved in the above process will be described in detail below.

[0039] 110. Obtain the first information.

[0040] The aforementioned first information includes the first frequency band number and the first time slot allocation of the primary cell. Specifically, after the terminal device connects to the primary cell, the network will inform the terminal device of the current network's frequency band indication and time slot allocation in a system broadcast message (i.e., the first information), such as n1, n41, n78, etc.

[0041] Optionally, before the terminal device obtains the first information, it accesses the primary cell. Specifically, the terminal device searches for a network and selects a suitable primary cell to access (i.e., the initial registration network).

[0042] 120. Determine the first duplex mode of the main cell based on the first frequency band number.

[0043] Specifically, referring to Table 5.2-1 in the 3GPP 38.101 standard, the operating frequency band of 5G NR in the FR1 band is defined as follows:

[0044] For example, by obtaining the first information mentioned above, the first frequency band number of the main cell is n41. By looking up the table above, it can be seen that the duplex mode corresponding to n41 is TDD. Therefore, it can be determined that the first duplex mode of the main cell is TDD.

[0045] 130. Obtain the second information when the terminal device is in an NRCA scenario.

[0046] The second information mentioned above includes the secondary cell's second frequency band number and second time slot allocation. Specifically, the network (i.e., the primary cell) sends an RRC reconfiguration message (i.e., the second information) to the terminal device. For an explanation of NRCA, please refer to the above text; it will not be elaborated upon here.

[0047] 140. Determine the second duplex mode of the auxiliary cell based on the second frequency band number.

[0048] Specifically, after obtaining the second frequency band number contained in the second information, the terminal device can find the duplex mode corresponding to the second frequency band number by looking up the table of 5GNR operating frequency bands in the FR1 band in step 120, thereby determining the second duplex mode of the secondary cell. For a detailed explanation of step 140, please refer to the explanation of step 120 above.

[0049] Optionally, if either the first duplex mode or the second duplex mode is FDD, access can be made to the secondary cell. Specifically, the 3GPP protocol only restricts the primary and secondary cells to maintain a consistent time slot ratio when both the primary and secondary cells are in TDD duplex mode. In other words, if either the primary or secondary cell is in FDD duplex mode, the terminal device can directly access the secondary cell.

[0050] 150. When both the first duplex mode and the second duplex mode are TDD, the first frequency band number is equal to the second frequency band number, and the first time slot ratio is different from the second time slot ratio, the first time slot ratio and the second time slot ratio shall be modified to the same time slot ratio.

[0051] Optionally, if both the first and second duplex modes are TDD, and the radio frequency (RF) device used by the terminal device when accessing the frequency band corresponding to the first frequency band number is the same as the RF device used when accessing the frequency band corresponding to the second frequency band number, and the first time slot ratio is different from the second time slot ratio, then the first and second time slot ratios will be modified to the same time slot ratio. The first and second frequency band numbers are different, and the frequency bands corresponding to the first and second frequency band numbers partially overlap. For example, the first frequency band number is n48, corresponding to a frequency range of 3550-3700MHz, with TDD duplex mode; the second frequency band number is n77, corresponding to a frequency range of 3300-4200MHz, with TDD duplex mode. It can be seen that the frequency bands corresponding to n48 and n77 partially overlap.

[0052] Specifically, modifying the first and second time slot allocations to the same time slot allocation can be done in any of the following three ways: 1. Modify the second time slot allocation to the first time slot allocation. 2. Modify the first time slot allocation to the second time slot allocation. 3. Modify both the first and second time slot allocations to the third time slot allocation. The third time slot allocation, the first time slot allocation, and the second time slot allocation are all different. For example, in one cycle, the first time slot allocation is DDDSUDDSUU, and the second time slot allocation is DDSUUDDDSU, where D represents the uplink time slot, S represents the special time slot, and U represents the downlink time slot. Modifying the second time slot allocation to the first time slot allocation changes the second time slot allocation to DDDSUDDSUU, thus making the first and second time slot allocations the same.

[0053] Optionally, if both the first and second duplex modes are TDD, the first frequency band number is equal to the second frequency band number, and the first time slot allocation is the same as the second time slot allocation, then access is made to the secondary cell. For example, if the first time slot allocation is DDDSUDSUU and the second time slot allocation is DDDSUDSUU in one cycle, then access is made directly to the secondary cell.

[0054] Optionally, when both the first and second duplex modes are TDD, and the RF device used by the terminal device when accessing the frequency band corresponding to the first frequency band number is the same as the RF device used when accessing the frequency band corresponding to the second frequency band number, and the first time slot allocation is the same as the second time slot allocation, then access is made to the secondary cell. For example, if in one cycle the first time slot allocation is DDDSUDSUU and the second time slot allocation is DDDSUDSUU, then direct access to the secondary cell is made.

[0055] Optionally, if both the first and second duplex modes are TDD, and the RF device used by the terminal device when accessing the frequency band corresponding to the first frequency band number is different from the RF device used when accessing the frequency band corresponding to the second frequency band number, the terminal device can directly access the secondary cell. If the primary and secondary cells do not share RF devices, the different time slot allocation ratios of the primary and secondary cells will not cause conflicts, and the terminal device can directly add a network and access the secondary cell without modifying the time slot allocation ratio. For example, if the first frequency band number is n77, the frequency band is 3300-4200MHz, and the second frequency band number is n48, the frequency band is 3550-3700MHz, and if the primary and secondary cells use different RF devices, the terminal device can directly access the secondary cell.

[0056] 160. Access to secondary cell.

[0057] The terminal device connects to the secondary cell, thereby completing the NRCA addition process.

[0058] In this embodiment, when both the first and second duplex modes are TDD, and the first frequency band number equals the second frequency band number, the terminal device can access the secondary cell by modifying the first and second time slot allocations to the same time slot allocation, ensuring consistency in the time slot allocations of the primary and secondary cells. This eliminates the need for network-side adjustments and base station maintenance engineers to investigate specific base stations after receiving complaints or feedback. Users can easily resolve the issue of inconsistent time slot allocations between the primary and secondary cells in NRCA, ensuring successful NRCA addition for the terminal device. This improves the efficiency of terminal device network access, enhances network connection stability and reliability, optimizes user experience, and reduces network deployment and maintenance costs and workload.

[0059] Please refer to Figure 2, which is a flowchart illustrating another network addition method provided in this embodiment of the application. This flowchart describes the process of a terminal device adding an NRCA. The terminology used in this method can be found above and will not be repeated here. The steps involved in the above process will be described in detail below.

[0060] 210. Access the main cell.

[0061] 220. Determine if the primary cell is TDD. If yes, proceed to step 230; otherwise, proceed to step 270.

[0062] Specifically, after a terminal device connects to the primary cell, the network will inform the terminal device of the current network's band indication and time slot allocation in a system broadcast message (i.e., the first information), such as n1, n41, n78, etc. The terminal device can determine whether the primary cell is TDD according to Table 5.2-1 in the 3GPP 38.101 standard.

[0063] 230. Refer to Table 5.2-1 in 3GPP 38.101 standard to determine whether the secondary cell is TDD. If yes, proceed to step 240; otherwise, proceed to step 270.

[0064] Specifically, if the duplex mode of the secondary cell is not TDD, but FDD, then the user directly accesses the secondary cell. For an explanation of this step, please refer to the explanation of step 120 above.

[0065] 240. Determine whether the primary and secondary cells are carrier-aggregated within the same frequency band or share RF devices. If yes, proceed to step 250; otherwise, proceed to step 270.

[0066] Specifically, the time slot allocation ratio of the primary cell and the secondary cell needs to be consistent in the following two scenarios: 1. According to the 3GPP protocol, the time slot allocation ratio of the primary cell and the secondary cell participating in intra-band carrier aggregation needs to be consistent. This application embodiment addresses the scenario where two cells participate in intra-band carrier aggregation (i.e., one primary cell and one secondary cell). For example, the frequency band number of the primary cell is n41, and the frequency band number of the secondary cell is n41. 2. Considering cost reasons, for frequency bands with overlapping frequencies, the terminal equipment will use the same RF device in its hardware design. In this case, the time slot allocation ratio of the primary cell and the secondary cell participating in carrier aggregation needs to be consistent, for example, the frequency bands n48 and n77. For a detailed explanation of this step, please refer to the description of step 120 above, which will not be elaborated here.

[0067] 250. Determine whether the time slot ratio of the primary cell and the secondary cell is consistent. If yes, proceed to step 270; otherwise, proceed to step 260.

[0068] Optionally, if both the first and second duplex modes are TDD, the first frequency band number is equal to the second frequency band number, and the first time slot allocation is the same as the second time slot allocation, the device accesses the secondary cell. Alternatively, if both the first and second duplex modes are TDD, the RF device used by the terminal device when accessing the frequency band corresponding to the first frequency band number is the same as the RF device used when accessing the frequency band corresponding to the second frequency band number, and the first time slot allocation is the same as the second time slot allocation, the device accesses the secondary cell.

[0069] 260. Modify the first time slot ratio and the second time slot ratio to the same time slot ratio.

[0070] For a detailed explanation of this step, please refer to the explanation of step 150 above, which will not be repeated here.

[0071] 270. Complete NRCA addition.

[0072] In this embodiment, by progressively determining the scenarios applicable to the terminal device, it is determined whether the time slot ratio of the primary and secondary cells needs to be modified to the same ratio. This allows for the execution of corresponding operations for different situations, enabling the terminal device to successfully add NRCA. This allows users to easily resolve the issue of inconsistent time slot ratios between the primary and secondary cells in NRCA, ensuring successful NRCA addition for the terminal device. Ultimately, this improves the efficiency of terminal device network access, enhances network connection stability and reliability, optimizes user experience, and reduces network deployment and maintenance costs and workload.

[0088] In the embodiments of this application, the processor may be a general-purpose processor, a digital signal processor, an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), a field-programmable gate array (FPGA), or other programmable logic devices, discrete gate or transistor logic devices, discrete hardware components, etc., and can implement or execute the various methods, steps, and logic block diagrams disclosed in the embodiments of this application. The general-purpose processor may be a microprocessor or any conventional processor. The steps of the methods disclosed in the embodiments of this application can be directly manifested as being executed by a hardware processor, or being executed by a combination of hardware and software modules within the processor.

[0089] In this application embodiment, the memory may include, but is not limited to, non-volatile memory such as a hard disk drive (HDD) or solid state drive (SSD), random access memory (RAM), erasable programmable read-only memory (EPROM), read-only memory (ROM), or compact disc read-only memory (CD-ROM), etc. Memory is any storage medium capable of carrying or storing program code in the form of instructions or data structures, and capable of being read and / or written by a computer (such as the terminal device shown in this application), but is not limited to these. The memory in this application embodiment may also be a circuit or any other device capable of implementing storage functions, used to store program instructions and / or data.

[0090] The processor 420 is primarily used for processing communication protocols and data, controlling the entire terminal device, executing software programs, and processing software program data. The memory 430 is primarily used for storing software programs and data. The transceiver 410 may include control circuitry and an antenna. The control circuitry is primarily used for converting baseband signals to radio frequency signals and processing radio frequency signals. The antenna is primarily used for transmitting and receiving radio frequency signals in the form of electromagnetic waves. Input / output devices, such as touchscreens, displays, and keyboards, are primarily used for receiving user input data and outputting data to the user.

[0091] When the terminal device is powered on, the processor 420 can read the software program in the memory 430, interpret and execute the instructions of the software program, and process the data of the software program. When data needs to be transmitted wirelessly, the processor 420 performs baseband processing on the data to be transmitted and outputs the baseband signal to the radio frequency (RF) circuit. The RF circuit processes the baseband signal and transmits the RF signal outward in the form of electromagnetic waves through the antenna. When data is sent to the terminal device, the RF circuit receives the RF signal through the antenna, converts the RF signal into a baseband signal, and outputs the baseband signal to the processor 420. The processor 420 converts the baseband signal back into data and processes the data.

[0092] In another implementation, the radio frequency circuitry and antenna can be set up independently of the processor performing baseband processing. For example, in a distributed scenario, the radio frequency circuitry and antenna can be arranged in a remote manner, independent of the terminal device.

[0093] The terminal device shown in this application embodiment may have more components than those in Figure 4, and this application embodiment does not limit this. The methods executed by the processor and transceiver shown above are only examples, and the specific steps executed by the processor and transceiver can be referred to the methods described above.

[0094] The embodiments of this application have been described in detail above. Specific examples have been used to illustrate the principles and implementation methods of this application. The description of the above embodiments is only for the purpose of helping to understand the method and core ideas of this application. At the same time, for those skilled in the art, there will be changes in the specific implementation methods and application scope based on the ideas of this application. Therefore, the content of this specification should not be construed as a limitation of this application.
