[0003] Description

[0004] Display system for the optical representation of a display object in a motor vehicle with an adjustment mechanism

[0005] The invention relates to a display system for the optical representation of a display object in a motor vehicle, comprising an adjustment mechanism. It further includes a method for operating the display system.

[0006] A head-up display (HUD) in a motor vehicle is a system that projects display objects directly into the driver's field of vision without requiring them to take their eyes off the road. Conventional head-up displays comprise a display unit that generates the display object and projects it into the eye of a vehicle occupant via a reflective element, which is a reflective surface on a windshield or a combiner mirror.

[0007] A panoramic head-up display comprises a self-illuminating display device mounted on the dashboard. This device generates a display with visual elements that are visible to the vehicle occupant by focusing on the image and reflecting it off a reflective surface. A panoramic head-up display typically covers most or all of the windshield of a vehicle.

[0008] For reasons of aerodynamics, vehicle architecture, and exterior proportions, vehicles (e.g., vans, sports cars) have a windshield that is positioned relatively flat relative to the vehicle's longitudinal axis. (See also: flat 24-3089)

[0009] 2

[0010] Due to the angle of the windshield, it is difficult to integrate display devices for panoramic head-up displays, and especially the reflective element, in such a way that the display object is correctly shown and can be perceived in the eyebox area of the vehicle (area where the head position of the vehicle occupant is usually located).

[0011] Various display systems with an adjustment mechanism and / or a reflective element with variable transparency are known in the prior art, such as in DE 10 2018 221 545 A1 or US 2016 / 0073031 A1.

[0012] The object of the present invention is to provide an improved display system for the visual representation of a display object in a motor vehicle, ensuring that the display object can be correctly represented even at a shallow angle of the windshield.

[0013] This problem is solved by the display system for a motor vehicle according to claim 1 and by the method for operating the display system according to the dependent claim.

[0014] Further details are specified in the dependent claims.

[0015] According to a first aspect, a display system for a motor vehicle is provided for the visual representation of a display object in a motor vehicle, comprising a display unit for the pictorial output of the display object, wherein the display unit is arranged planarly on a dashboard, a movably arranged planar reflective element with a reflective surface in the area of a windshield of the motor vehicle, which can be arranged in several operating positions, wherein the output display object is reflected at the reflective element and is perceptible to a vehicle occupant, wherein in the several24-3089

[0016] 3

[0017] The device comprises: operating positions in which the reflective surfaces have different sizes; an adjustment mechanism designed to adjust the reflective element between the multiple operating positions; and a control unit designed to control the adjustment mechanism to set the reflective element to a selected operating position and to provide image data of the display object for display via the display unit.

[0018] The display unit is preferably an LCD with matrix backlighting or a MicroLED display, which offers high pixel density, high brightness, and fast response time. In an advantageous embodiment, the display unit is self-illuminating and includes an OLED or LCD backlight.

[0019] The operating positions of the reflective element may include a parked position in which the reflective element does not protrude above the dashboard and / or is recessed inside the dashboard and / or rests on the surface of the dashboard, an extended position in which the reflective element protrudes above the dashboard at its maximum height and / or offers a maximum reflective surface, and an intermediate position in which the reflective element protrudes above the dashboard at 20% to 80% of its maximum height and / or offers a size of 20% to 80% of the maximum reflective surface.

[0020] The operating position can be defined not only by the extension height but also by an angle of inclination relative to the dashboard surface. The width of the reflective element (in the width of the vehicle) must be at least equal to the width of the display unit (in the width of the vehicle). 24-3089

[0021] 4

[0022] To protect the reflective element from dirt and damage, it has proven advantageous if it can be moved into a parking position when at rest and is located in a storage pocket.

[0023] For spatial reasons, this storage pocket can be recessed vertically into the dashboard or arranged horizontally to the surface of the dashboard, and it can also be recessed at least partially into the dashboard.

[0024] In its extended position, the reflective element is particularly suitable for displaying multimedia applications. This position can be assumed especially when the vehicle is stationary, particularly when parked or during fully autonomous ferry operation. The reflective element provides a reflective surface whose upper edge is significantly above the 4° line of sight. The 4° line of sight requirement is based on a legal regulation stipulating that a vehicle occupant must have an unobstructed view of the vehicle's surroundings from within their eyebox at viewing angles above a specified line of sight. The specified line of sight corresponds to a line pointing forward at an angle of 4° below the horizontal.

[0025] In the intermediate position, the reflective element can be extended to a height of 20% to 80% of its maximum height. This may be the case, in particular, when the driver is operating the vehicle manually and / or it is in a semi-autonomous mode. Specifically, the intermediate position may be defined such that the upper edge of the reflective element lies on or below the 4° line of sight.

[0026] The reflective element is preferably extended to such an extent that the mandatory displays in the vehicle, such as the speedometer, the odometer, and warning and indicator lights for dipped, main and 24-3089

[0027] 5

[0028] Parking lights, turn signals, brakes, engine, fuel level, oil pressure, battery, etc. are displayed.

[0029] It may be provided that the different operating positions involve different inclinations of the reflective element.

[0030] The term "inclination" can be understood as the angle that the reflective element has relative to the vehicle occupant and / or the surface of the dashboard. This inclination can be adjusted, particularly depending on the eye position and / or the extension height of the reflective element, by means of a suitable adjustment mechanism.

[0031] It can also be provided that the inclination is set by the mounting of the reflective surface, so that the reflective element can be extended and retracted at a fixed angle.

[0032] It may be provided that the reflective element is partially transparent and has electrochromatic properties, with the control unit being configured to adjust a degree of transparency of the reflective element depending on the driving situation and the operating position of the reflective element.

[0033] An electrochromatic property can be understood as the fact that the reflecting element changes its degree of transparency when a voltage is applied. The degree of transparency describes how much light a material transmits and indicates the perceived brightness of the area behind the reflecting element.

[0034] It may also be provided that the control unit actuates the adjustment mechanism to adjust the reflective element between its operating positions depending on the driving situation. 24-3089

[0035] 6

[0036] It may be provided that the adjustment mechanism, by means of translation and rotation, adjusts the reflective element to an intermediate position so that a driver, when driving the vehicle himself, has a clear field of vision and this, in particular according to ECE Regulation No. 125, is 180° horizontally forward and covers a vertical area of at least 5° above the horizon line at 1.2 m eye level of the driver.

[0037] It may be provided that the driving situation is determined in particular by at least one of the following aspects: a user input; a driving condition, in particular an indication of a standstill or movement of the vehicle; a degree of autonomous driving; a vehicle user profile, which in particular includes an indication of a position of the vehicle occupant and / or an orientation of a vehicle occupant's field of vision; and an indication of an environmental situation, in particular including an indication of light exposure on the motor vehicle.

[0038] The term "driving situation" can be understood as the entirety of factors influencing driving or the display of the object shown.

[0039] User input can refer to the interaction of a vehicle user with the display system, in which the vehicle occupant enters information, data or commands into the display system or another vehicle system to trigger a specific action or perform a function.

[0040] In a driving condition, a distinction can be made in particular between the states of standstill and ferry operation of a motor vehicle, as well as between other states that can be determined by factors such as speed, direction of travel, acceleration, braking and other parameters.24-3089

[0041] 7

[0042] The degree of autonomous driving can be used to describe, in particular, how much responsibility a vehicle assumes while driving. There is an internationally recognized classification into 6 levels (Level 0 to 5) for this purpose, established by the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers).

[0043] The vehicle user profile can include, in particular, information regarding the vehicle occupant and their position and orientation of their field of vision in the vehicle.

[0044] A vehicle user profile can also record how many people are in the vehicle and where they are located within the vehicle. The environmental conditions can also include prevailing weather conditions or traffic conditions.

[0045] An environmental situation can include the amount of light shining on the vehicle. Furthermore, an environmental situation can include traffic volume and / or weather conditions.

[0046] It may be provided that a detection system is designed to capture the vehicle user profile and the environmental situation relevant to the driving situation.

[0047] The data acquisition system can consist of several data acquisition devices. One such device for capturing the vehicle user profile could be a camera that uses image recognition to determine the position of the vehicle occupant within the vehicle.

[0048] The detection system may also include an electrical contact that detects the opening of a specific door in the vehicle, from which the position of the vehicle occupant in the vehicle can be determined. 24-3089

[0049] 8

[0050] The direction of view of a vehicle occupant can be determined by a camera using image recognition. The surrounding environment can also be detected with one or more cameras, allowing the traffic situation to be recorded.

[0051] The light intensity can in turn be determined with a suitably positioned lux meter or radiometer.

[0052] Information about the driving situation can also be transmitted to the recording system, especially from an external system.

[0053] According to another aspect, a procedure for operating a display system is provided. This comprises the following steps: detection of the driving situation by the control unit; selection of a usage position of the reflective element by a control unit depending on the driving situation; and adjustment of the selected usage position of the reflective element by an adjustment mechanism.

[0054] When the control unit detects the driving situation, all relevant data for the driving situation can be collected.

[0055] The control unit selects the operating position of the reflection element depending on the driving situation, whereby the recorded data of the driving situation can be considered in aggregate in order to take into account opposing aspects.

[0056] The choice of operating position for the reflective element should be made in a manner that allows the driving situation, taking safety aspects into particular consideration. For example, the display can be chosen so that the attention of a vehicle occupant who is driving is not impaired. 24-3089

[0057] 9

[0058] The adjustment of the reflective element to a usable position by the adjustment mechanism controlled by the control unit, depending on the driving situation, can be achieved through translation and / or rotation.

[0059] The procedure may include the following steps: providing image data of the display object by the control unit depending on the driving situation and the operating position of the reflective element; generating a display object by the display unit based on the provided image data.

[0060] In order to achieve a correct, distortion-free representation of the display object, the provision of the image data may depend on the operating position of the reflective element, since in particular a change in the inclination or extension height of the reflective element requires an adjustment of the image data.

[0061] In particular, a distortion module can be used which provides the image data in such a way that, when viewing the representation of the display object on the reflective surface, it is displayed as undistorted as possible.

[0062] A module is a functional unit comprising differential equations that models, computes, or simulates a specific output parameter based on input data.

[0063] The display object is generated by the display unit based on the provided image data, and the brightness of the display unit can also be adjusted.

[0064] It may be provided that the procedure further includes the steps of providing the transparency level of the reflective element by the control unit depending on the driving situation and the 24-3089

[0065] 10

[0066] Positioning of the reflection element in use and adjusting the transparency level of the reflection element by applying a voltage.

[0067] The level of transparency provided can be determined by the driving situation and, in particular, the surrounding environment.

[0068] For example, if the vehicle is stationary, the transparency level can be reduced to the point where the reflective element is opaque. Similarly, when direct light shines on the side of the reflective element facing away from the vehicle occupants, the transparency level can be adjusted so that the display is not obstructed.

[0069] The degree of transparency can be adjusted, in particular, by applying an electrical voltage.

[0070] The embodiments are explained in more detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings. These show:

[0071] Figure 1 shows a schematic representation of a display system for a motor vehicle with an adjustment mechanism;

[0072] Figure 2 shows a schematic representation of a vertically movable reflective element;

[0073] Figure 3 shows a schematic representation of a method for operating a display system.

[0074] Figure 1 schematically shows a representation of a display system 110 for a motor vehicle 100 with an adjustment mechanism 116. The display system 110, installed in a motor vehicle, is intended to replace the conventional instruments and provide additional functions. 24-3089

[0075] 11

[0076] The display system 110 comprises a display unit 111, a reflective element 114, a control unit 117 and an adjustment mechanism 116, and is mounted flat on the dashboard 112 of the motor vehicle 100.

[0077] The display unit 111, oriented towards the roof of the motor vehicle 100, can be a microLED display or an LC display with matrix backlighting. The display unit 111 preferably extends over the top surface, and in particular over the entire length, of the dashboard 112, so that a display object 113 can be projected across the entire width of the windshield 115 of the motor vehicle 100 by reflection off a surface of a reflective element 114.

[0078] The reflective element 114 is designed and configured to deflect the generated display object 113 towards the vehicle occupant 119, so that the display object 113 is shown in the area of a windscreen 115 of the motor vehicle 100 and in the field of vision of the vehicle occupant 119.

[0079] The display object 113 is presented in such a way that it can overlay the real environment and the vehicle occupant 119 can see a seamless combination of the display object 113 with the real world, depending on how transparent the reflective element 114 is set.

[0080] The windshield 115 of the motor vehicle 100 may be designed at a shallow angle, as is often the case with sports cars or vans, so that its use as a reflective element 114 for displaying the display object is limited. A shallow angle can be understood to mean an angle of less than 45°.

[0081] The reflective element 114 can comprise at least one combiner mirror, which represents the display object 113 for the vehicle occupant 119. 24-3089

[0082] 12

[0083] The combiner mirror can be designed as a semi-reflective transparent mirror, whereby the real world in the direction of view of the vehicle occupant 119 should be visible and the vehicle occupant 119 sees both the display object 113 and the real environment.

[0084] In one embodiment, the display unit 111 and the reflective element 114 can be designed such that the display object 113 is reflected only by a part of the reflective element 114 or the reflective element 114 is only partially illuminated by the display unit 111.

[0085] In another embodiment, the reflective element 114 can comprise two combiner mirrors, wherein the respective combiner mirrors are adjusted depending on the driving situation.

[0086] For example, a reflective element 114 can be provided in a position of use with a larger reflective surface when the motor vehicle 100 is stationary, for example to play multimedia applications.

[0087] A reflective element 114 can also be provided in a position of use with a smaller reflective surface when the motor vehicle 100 is in ferry operation, for example to display a speed indication or engine power.

[0088] A smaller reflective surface may be present if the reflective element is extended less far in the operating position.

[0089] The reflective element 114 can preferably be flat or alternatively curved. 24-3089

[0090] 13

[0091] In order not to restrict the view of the vehicle occupant 119 through the windshield of the traffic situation too much, it may be provided that the transmission of the reflective element 114 is controllable.

[0092] In an electrochromatic reflecting element 114, the transmission of the reflecting element 114 can be reduced by applying a voltage, so that ambient light is prevented from interfering with the display of the object 113 through the front glass and from the back of the reflecting element 114.

[0093] The display system 110 further comprises an adjustment mechanism 116, which may be designed and configured to move the reflective element 114 into a working position, the working positions being able to include a parking position.

[0094] The reflective element 114 is extended to a certain height and a certain angle to the dashboard 112 is set.

[0095] The angle of the reflecting element 114 can be set by a fixed arrangement.

[0096] The operating position of the reflective element 114 can be adjusted depending on the driving situation. This adjustment can include translation and / or rotation, and in particular, adjusting the extension height of the reflective element 114. The adjustment mechanism 116 is driven, in particular, by an electric motor.

[0097] Furthermore, the display unit includes a control unit 117 which is designed and configured to control the display unit 111 and to move the reflective element 114 depending on the driving situation. 24-3089

[0098] 14

[0099] The control unit 117 can be at least partially external to motor vehicle 100.

[0100] Furthermore, a detection system 118 may be included, which may be designed and configured in particular to detect the vehicle user profile so that the control unit 117 can take into account the position of the vehicle occupant 119 and / or the orientation of the vehicle occupant's field of vision when setting the operating position and transparency level of the reflective element 114 and when providing the image data.

[0101] The position of the vehicle occupant 119 includes their seating position in the vehicle 100 and, in particular, whether the vehicle user 119 is seated in the front or rear row of seats. The position of the vehicle occupant 119 can also include the driver's height, as this can determine the angle at which the focus of their field of vision captures the display object 113.

[0102] The field of vision of the vehicle occupant 119 can be determined in particular by the position of the head, whereby the angle at which the field of vision of the vehicle occupant 119 captures the display object 113 is relevant for its representation.

[0103] The detection system 118 can also be designed and configured to detect the environmental situation, in particular detecting the light radiation on the windscreen of the motor vehicle 100, which is relevant for a possible reduction of the transmittance of the reflective element 114 in order to continue to display the object 113 correctly.

[0104] The recorded environmental situation may also include traffic volume and / or weather conditions, with the exit height of the 24-3089

[0105] 15

[0106] and / or the transparency of the reflective element 114 can be adjusted.

[0107] Figure 2 shows a schematic representation of a vertically movable reflection element 114 comprising a combiner mirror.

[0108] Furthermore, an adjustment mechanism 116 is included to at least partially displace the at least one combiner mirror of the reflection element 114 for the display of a display object 113 by means of translation.

[0109] In this embodiment, the reflective element 114 can be extended and retracted from the bearing bushing 120 at an inclination towards a vehicle occupant 119.

[0110] In a further embodiment, the adjustment mechanism 116 can also include a rotary joint 1161 to adjust the orientation of the reflective element in a state of use.

[0111] The swivel joint 1161 can be attached to the lower end of the reflective element 114 and mounted on a rail 121 movable vertically to the dashboard 112, so that the reflective element 114 can be moved both perpendicularly to the dashboard 112 and rotated towards and away from the vehicle occupant 119, with the exact positioning depending on the driving situation and the position of the driver.

[0112] The adjustment mechanism 116 is further designed and configured to retract the reflective element 114 into a parked position in a bearing bushing 120 when the display system 110 is not in use but in a resting state. 24-3089

[0113] 16

[0114] The bearing bushing 120 is recessed into the surface of the dashboard 112, so that the adjustment mechanism 116 can linearly extend or retract the reflective element 114.

[0115] The bearing bushing 120 can be recessed into the surface of the dashboard 112 in such a way that the reflective element is already inclined at a specific angle to a vehicle occupant when the vehicle is parked, eliminating the need for further adjustment of the inclination. The operating position can then be easily adjusted by extending the reflective element to a specific height.

[0116] When the combiner mirror is retracted, the bearing bushing 120 can be closed with a cover such as a hinged or roll-top cover or similar to protect it from damage and dirt.

[0117] In one embodiment of the reflective element 114 with two combiner mirrors, these can be arranged one behind the other by the vehicle occupant 119 in the direction of the windshield and each can be moved in and out of its own bearing bushing 120.

[0118] Figure 3 shows a schematic representation of a method for operating a display system, in particular the reflection element being controlled depending on the driving situation.

[0119] First, the control unit detects S1 the driving situation.

[0120] This allows the degree of autonomy with which the vehicle is operated to be recorded.

[0121] Autonomous driving is generally classified into five levels of autonomy, defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). These levels of autonomy are referred to as the SAE J3016 standard.24-3089

[0122] 17

[0123] Level 0 means there is no automation. The driver is responsible for controlling the vehicle at all times. The vehicle may have warning systems such as lane departure warning or emergency braking systems, but these are not capable of controlling the vehicle independently.

[0124] Level 1 includes a driver assistance system. The vehicle has certain automated functions that help the driver in specific situations, such as adaptive cruise control or lane keeping assist. However, the driver must still monitor all aspects of vehicle control and intervene if necessary.

[0125] Level 2 involves partial automation. The vehicle can perform some driving tasks independently, such as accelerating, braking, and steering, but the driver must be ready to take control at any time.

[0126] Level 3 represents conditional automation. The vehicle can drive fully autonomously in certain situations, but the driver must be prepared to take control when the system prompts them to do so.

[0127] Level 4 represents a high degree of automation. The vehicle can drive autonomously in most situations and may not require human intervention, but there are still certain situations where the driver must intervene. However, these situations may be less frequent than at lower levels of autonomy.

[0128] Level 5 is characterized by complete automation. The vehicle can drive autonomously in all situations and requires no human intervention. There is no need for a steering wheel or 24-3089

[0129] 18

[0130] Pedals in the vehicle, as the system takes over all aspects of vehicle control.

[0131] The degree of autonomy in which the motor vehicle is operated can be determined by an input from the vehicle occupant, who sets the degree of autonomy.

[0132] The degree of autonomy can also be determined by recording the seating position of the vehicle occupant.

[0133] Furthermore, a driving situation can be recorded in step S1. The driving situation can be determined by recording a vehicle user profile, which includes, in particular, information about the position of the vehicle occupant and / or the orientation of their field of vision.

[0134] The position in the motor vehicle can be determined by whether the vehicle occupant is seated in the front or rear seats and whether and at what angle his view is directed towards the windshield of the motor vehicle.

[0135] Furthermore, recording the driving situation can include recording information about an environmental situation, in particular light exposure on the motor vehicle.

[0136] In particular, the light radiation directed towards the windshield of the vehicle is recorded, since the light radiation from this side hits the back of the reflective element and can thus disrupt the display of the object depending on the intensity of the radiation.

[0137] Furthermore, in step S2, the control unit selects a usage position of the reflective element depending on the driving situation. 24-3089

[0138] 19

[0139] For example, if the vehicle is operated in one of the stages 0 to 2, the control unit can determine a suitable operating position in which the reflective element is only partially extended.

[0140] If the motor vehicle is operated in stage 4 or 5, or is in the driving state of a parked position, the control unit may determine a suitable operating position in which the reflective element is fully extended.

[0141] The position of the vehicle occupant can be taken into account by adjusting the extension height of the reflective element and / or its angle relative to the occupant. This is done to create a suitable and sharp display object.

[0142] It may also be provided that the inclination of the reflective element can be adjusted depending on the environmental situation and, in particular, the angle of incidence of ambient light on the motor vehicle.

[0143] In response to disruptive light, the user can adjust the operating position to ensure the best possible display of the object.

[0144] In step S3, the reflective element is also set to a usable position by the adjustment mechanism controlled by the control unit, depending on the driving situation.

[0145] The adjustment mechanism is activated and the reflective element is adjusted according to the selected operating position by moving and / or rotating it. 24-3089

[0146] 20

[0147] The provision of image data S4 of the display object is carried out in step S4 by the control unit depending on the driving situation and the operating position of the reflective element.

[0148] The level of autonomy can be taken into account by, for example, adjusting the brightness of the display or the color scheme to the level of autonomy.

[0149] For example, at an autonomy level of 0 to 2, data on speed, fuel consumption, etc. can be displayed in a brighter color and / or in a specific color.

[0150] In particular, the image data can be provided in such a way that no image distortions occur when displaying the object being shown.

[0151] Since the reflective elements reflect the light depending on the angle of incidence, image distortion can occur depending on the viewing position of the displayed object.

[0152] Image distortion can be avoided by adjusting the image data depending on the vehicle user profile, which includes in particular information about the position of the vehicle occupant and / or the orientation of the vehicle occupant's field of vision.

[0153] This can be achieved through predictive distortion compensation, where the image data is modified so that the representation appears correct after reflection at the reflective element, depending on the position of the vehicle occupant and their viewing direction. This can be done in particular by applying a distortion model that describes the relationship between the original display object and the distorted display object.

[0154] After applying the distortion model, the image data can represent an inverse transformation onto the display object. This means that the representation of the display object is modified so that it appears correct after reflection and from the intended viewing angle.

[0155] Information about the environmental conditions when providing the image data, and in particular the amount of light shining on the vehicle, can also be taken into account.

[0156] Depending on the amount of light, the image data can be modified by selecting appropriate contrast to ensure good visibility for the vehicle occupant.

[0157] The provision of image data can be continuous, taking into account changes in the driving situation and, in particular, the position and viewing direction of a vehicle occupant.

[0158] The creation of a display object is carried out in step S5 by the display unit based on the provided image data.

[0159] The display object can be presented in the field of vision of a vehicle occupant by reflection off the reflective element.

[0160] For example, if the vehicle is operated in one of the levels 0 to 2, the display only includes the necessary information such as speed, fuel consumption, or safety warnings.22

[0161] When operating at autonomy levels 4 and 5, various multimedia applications can be represented by the display. The driving situation can also be determined by user input, such as selecting music or different display options.

[0162] Furthermore, the transparency level of the reflective element can be provided by the control unit depending on the driving situation and the operating position of the reflective element in step S6.

[0163] After detecting the light emission, the control unit can select a suitable degree of transparency of the reflective element so that the display of the object is not disturbed by ambient light emission, especially on the back of the reflective element.

[0164] The transparency level of the reflective element can be adjusted by applying an electrical voltage in step S7.

[0165] Adjusting the transparency level can be done in parallel with generating a display object and setting a usage position of the reflective element.

[0166] In another embodiment, the transmittance of the windscreen can also be adjusted instead of the transmittance of the reflective element.
