Description

[0001] DESCRIPTION

[0002] Title of the invention: TURBOMACHINE COMPRISING A CENTRIFUGAL WHEEL WITH A MAGNETIC FLANGE

[0003] Technical field of the invention

[0004] The invention lies in the field of turbomachinery, and more specifically in turbomachinery comprising means for supporting a rotor comprising bearings and / or active magnetic thrust bearings.

[0005] Technological background

[0006] The rotational guidance of a turbomachine's rotating shaft typically relies on pivoting elements such as bearings and / or thrust bearings to support and stabilize the rotating shaft while minimizing friction and vibration. The choice of bearing type depends on the specific application requirements, particularly in terms of rotational speed and / or load.

[0007] Among existing technologies, magnetic bearings and thrust bearings are an alternative to traditional bearings with rollers.

[0008] Indeed, magnetic pivoting elements use electromagnetic fields to keep the rotating shaft levitated without contact. A distinction is made between active magnetic bearings based on electromagnets and electronically controlled, and passive magnetic bearings based on permanent magnets, which are simpler in design but less precise for rotational guidance.

[0009] In turbomachinery driven by an electric motor, the choice of pivot point positioning along the shaft is crucial for ensuring rotor stability and minimizing imbalances. The most common design involves installing the bearings at the ends of the motor rotor. The drawback of these magnetic bearings, and more generally of magnetic pivot points, is their mass. These magnetic elements are primarily made of copper and iron, two materials with high densities. In conventional turbomachinery, the centrifugal wheels are generally made of aluminum or a non-magnetic material to reduce mass and the load on the rotating guide elements. Heavier centrifugal wheels generally result in greater stress on the bearings due to the imbalance force of the various components subjected to the high rotational speeds of the turbomachinery.

[0010] High-speed turbomachinery has a significant mass and size to provide adequate fluid flow and pressure. The presence of an electric motor, including a stator, rotor, dedicated cooling system, and magnetic pivoting elements, significantly impacts the overall mass and size of the rotating shaft or rotor. In these machines, the rotational guidance elements are most often gas bearings, and generally aerodynamic air bearings, particularly in air conditioning machines. Aerodynamic air bearings utilize the rotation of a rotating part to create overpressure and thus generate lift for the rotating shaft or rotor.

[0011] In an effort to achieve greater compactness, turbomachinery with an axial flux motor integrated into a compressor centrifugal wheel has already been proposed. This integration typically involves placing a rotor on the centrifugal wheel and a stator on a portion of the housing, thus utilizing the electromagnetic interaction between the stator and rotor sections of the electric motor to drive the compressor centrifugal wheel. While reducing the apparent size on the rotating shaft, these integrations do not eliminate the need for magnetic bearings on the rotating shaft and do not provide direct electromagnetic interaction with the centrifugal wheel.

[0012] Furthermore, solutions exist that aim to reduce compactness through magnetic interaction with the centrifugal wheel. These solutions propose a magnetic rotor armature integrated into a wheel to magnetize its rear face. This rear face can then be brought into electromagnetic interaction with a magnetic thrust bearing. This thrust bearing includes electromagnets to support axial forces, and the thrust bearing also incorporates auxiliary roller bearings configured to support the radial forces of the rotating shaft. This solution thus reduces compactness by combining the bearing and thrust bearing within a single pivoting element on the rotating shaft. This solution always includes magnetic pivoting on the rotating shaft, particularly in turbomachinery with multiple centrifugal wheels.

[0013] Furthermore, the aforementioned prior art does not offer a compact solution enabling the magnetic levitation of a rotating shaft by electromagnetic interaction with said wheel.

[0014] The invention therefore proposes to overcome these drawbacks.

[0015] Objectives of the invention

[0016] The invention aims to provide a compact turbomachine with a flanged centrifugal wheel.

[0017] The invention also aims to provide, in at least one embodiment, a turbomachine enabling the magnetic levitation of the rotating shaft by means of at least one magnetic field generating device.

[0018] The invention also aims to provide, in at least one embodiment, a turbomachine using a magnetic flux circulating between a flanged centrifugal wheel and at least one magnetic field generating device to support the axial and radial forces of the rotating shaft.

[0019] The invention also aims to provide a turbomachine whose design aims to reduce the size of the rotating shaft.

[0020] The invention also aims to provide a turbomachine comprising flanged centrifugal wheels as positioning and rotational guidance elements for the rotating shaft.

[0021] Description of the invention

[0022] To this end, the invention relates to a turbomachine for the compression or expansion of a fluid comprising a casing, a fluid inlet, a fluid outlet, a rotating shaft extending longitudinally inside said casing, said turbomachine comprising:

[0023] at least one centrifugal wheel comprising a wheel body and at least one flanged portion, said wheel being mounted rigidly for rotation on said rotating shaft, said at least one flanged portion being made of magnetic material, said centrifugal wheel extending between said fluid inlet and said fluid outlet;

[0024] at least one magnetic field generating device, referred to as the magnetic device, comprising a device body arranged concentrically around said wheel body, said magnetic device having a surface opposite said flanged portion of said wheel body.

[0025] A magnetic device is defined as one or more fixed magnetic elements for non-contact guidance of the support of a rotating shaft of a turbomachine. The magnetic device can be fixedly mounted inside a turbomachine housing or a centrifugal wheel housing and is configured to extend concentrically around a centrifugal wheel. According to the invention, the turbomachine comprises at least one radial or axial magnetic device arranged concentrically around a centrifugal wheel.

[0026] The flanged portion of the centrifugal wheel is defined as a magnetic element or portion mounted in rotation to the blades of said wheel, and extending into the blade tip.

[0027] The flanged portion helps to eliminate play effects in order to improve aerodynamic performance.

[0028] The invention uses the principle of magnetic interaction between a centrifugal wheel comprising at least one element of magnetic material and at least one magnetic field generating device arranged concentrically around said wheel body.

[0029] It is understood that the turbomachine according to the invention can be suitable for the axial or radial compression of a fluid or for the axial or radial expansion of a fluid.

[0030] A centrifugal impeller according to the invention is a flanged impeller having at least one flanged portion made of magnetic material and conventionally comprises an impeller body extending longitudinally between a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet. It is understood that the centrifugal impeller is preferably a vane or blade impeller, but any other impeller known to those skilled in the art and suitable for use in a turbomachine may also be used. In the case of a compressor impeller, the fluid inlet corresponds to a small-diameter impeller portion, generally having a conical shape called the impeller nose, and the fluid outlet corresponds to a larger-diameter impeller portion. In a turbomachine for fluid compression, the low-pressure fluid enters through the fluid inlet, comes into contact with the wheel nose, and is then accelerated and compressed along the wheel body by the blades of the latter until it reaches the fluid outlet, where the fluid exits compressed and at a higher pressure.

[0031] In the case of a turbine wheel, the fluid inlet corresponds to a large-diameter portion of the wheel, while the fluid outlet corresponds to a smaller-diameter portion. In a turbomachine designed to extract energy from a fluid or for fluid expansion, the high-pressure fluid enters through the fluid inlet, comes into contact with the outer edge of the wheel, and then transfers its energy as it passes through the wheel blades, which guide and accelerate the fluid towards the wheel nose, to the fluid outlet, where it exits at a lower pressure and with less energy. It is understood that the invention applies mutadis mutandis depending on the intended application.

[0032] According to the invention, the wheel body has a substantially conical or trapezoidal shape with a front face and a rear face. It is understood that said wheel body, and more generally the wheel itself, may be made of a magnetic material.

[0033] The term "flanged portion made of magnetic material" refers to a portion of the wheel body made of magnetic material, such as magnetic strips, a magnetic coating, or magnetic blades. Furthermore, flanged portions can be made entirely of a magnetic material or a magnetic alloy. In the former case, it is understood that a magnetic flux can flow over the portion of the magnetic material in question. Thus, the centrifugal wheel can be magnetic over its entire wheel body or made magnetizable over a specific portion of its wheel body, preferably at the circumferential portions of its wheel body, such as the flanged portions.

[0034] A turbomachine comprising a flanged wheel according to the invention ensures the equilibrium position of the rotating shaft and guarantees its magnetic levitation. The invention thus reduces the overall size of the rotating shaft inherent in the presence of pivoting elements such as active magnetic bearings and thrust bearings.

[0035] Furthermore, the invention makes it possible to reduce the length of the rotating shaft by using at least one radial and / or axial magnetic device mounted fixed concentrically around the centrifugal wheel instead of the conventional magnetic pivoting.

[0036] Unlike prior art solutions, the invention provides support for the rotating shaft through the circulation of a magnetic flux between at least one flanged portion and at least one magnetic device. Furthermore, this design also supports the axial and radial forces on the rotating shaft.

[0037] In a preferred variant, the turbomachine includes at least a first magnetic field generating device, called the axial magnetic device, comprising a device body arranged concentrically around a first portion of said wheel body, said axial magnetic device having a lateral surface facing said centrifugal wheel, said lateral surface opening onto a first flanged portion of said wheel body, said axial magnetic device being configured to generate a magnetic flux circulating between said lateral surface and said first flanged portion.

[0038] Advantageously and according to the invention, the turbomachine further comprises a second magnetic field generating device, called a radial magnetic device, comprising a device body arranged concentrically around a second flanged portion of said wheel body, said device body having a surface opposite said centrifugal wheel, called the internal surface, opening transversely onto said second flanged portion.

[0039] Preferably, according to this variant of the invention, said internal surface comprises a groove extending along said device body and a magnetic element housed in said groove, said groove having an opening transversely onto said wheel body, so that said turbomachine can support the radial forces of said rotating shaft by circulation of a magnetic flux between said radial magnetic device and said second flanged portion of said wheel body.

[0040] Advantageously and according to the invention, the turbomachine comprises two centrifugal wheels.

[0041] Thus, according to the invention, the turbomachine optimizes the fluid flow entering each wheel and improves the load distribution on each wheel. Furthermore, the rotational speed can be reduced, which decreases wear and extends the service life of the turbomachine components.

[0042] Advantageously and according to the invention, each centrifugal wheel comprises at least one axial and / or radial magnetic device arranged concentrically around a respective portion of its wheel body.

[0043] Thus, according to this embodiment, magnetic devices limit friction forces on the rotating shaft, which improves overall efficiency and reduces turbomachine maintenance operations.

[0044] Advantageously and according to the invention, the turbomachine further comprises a third magnetic field generating device, called the secondary axial magnetic device, comprising a device body arranged concentrically around a portion of said rotating shaft and adjoining said centrifugal wheel, said secondary axial magnetic device having a lateral surface arranged with respect to said centrifugal wheel, said lateral surface opening onto a third flanged portion of said wheel body, said secondary axial magnetic device being configured to generate a magnetic flux circulating between said lateral surface and said third flanged portion.

[0045] Thus, according to the invention, the centrifugal wheel is engaged between two axial magnetic devices arranged on either side of it, which allows for better management of the axial forces of the rotating shaft from the centrifugal wheel.

[0046] Advantageously and according to the invention, the turbomachine further comprises a fourth magnetic field generator, called a secondary radial magnetic device, comprising a device body arranged concentrically around a portion of said rotating shaft and adjoining said centrifugal wheel, said secondary radial magnetic device having an internal surface arranged opposite said rotating shaft, said internal surface opening transversely onto a portion of said rotating shaft, said portion being magnetic, said secondary radial magnetic device being configured to generate a magnetic flux circulating between said internal surface and said magnetic portion of said rotating shaft.

[0047] Thus and according to the invention, the secondary radial magnetic device makes it possible to ensure additional and precise control of the radial forces of the rotating shaft, by ensuring magnetic levitation of the rotating shaft in combination with the first radial device arranged on the centrifugal wheel.

[0048] Advantageously and according to the invention, each magnetic field generating device has a groove comprising a magnetic element.

[0049] Thus, according to the invention, such an arrangement allows for increased compactness and ensures better mechanical strength of the magnetic elements on the magnetic field generating devices.

[0050] Advantageously and according to the invention, the magnetic element is an electromagnet. The electromagnets according to the invention can be formed by a ferromagnetic core and windings commonly used by a person skilled in the art.

[0051] Thus, according to the invention, the magnetic devices allow active control of the support of the rotating shaft.

[0052] Advantageously and according to the invention, the turbomachine further comprises a control system for the magnetic element.

[0053] The control system may include known position sensors configured to detect the position of the centrifugal wheels relative to the magnetic devices.

[0054] Other sensors known to a person in the trade can also be integrated into the system such as speed sensors, voltage sensors or temperature sensors.

[0055] The control system may also include a data processing unit for the sensors and a communication module for transmitting the data and enabling monitoring via a human-machine interface. Furthermore, the processing unit may also include various modules for regulating or adaptively optimizing the magnetic field to control the electromagnetic flux between the magnetic devices and the wheel.

[0056] Thus, according to the invention, the control system enables dynamic stabilization of the centrifugal wheels through real-time adjustment of the magnetic field of the magnetic field generating devices. The wheels and the levitation of the associated rotating shaft can be controlled according to the longitudinal or radial position of the wheels or the rotating shaft.

[0057] The turbomachines of the invention may comprise a plurality of axial or radial magnetic devices, in combination with a plurality of secondary radial or axial magnetic devices.

[0058] The invention also relates to an aircraft air conditioning system comprising a turbomachine according to all or part of the characteristics mentioned above.

[0059] The effects and advantages of the turbomachine according to the invention apply mutatis mutandis to an air conditioning system equipped with a turbomachine according to the invention. List of figures

[0060] Other objects, features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description, given by way of non-limiting example only, and which refers to the single attached figure in which:

[0061] - [Fig. 1] schematically represents a turbomachine comprising two centrifugal wheels

[0062] - [Fig. 2] schematically illustrates the magnetic interaction between a centrifugal wheel and magnetic devices according to one embodiment of the invention

[0063] - [Fig. 3] schematically represents the arrangement of the magnetic devices at the level of a centrifugal wheel according to another embodiment of the invention

[0064] Detailed description of an embodiment of the invention. In the figures, the scales and proportions are not strictly respected, for the purposes of illustration and clarity.

[0065] In the entire detailed description that follows with reference to the figures, unless otherwise indicated, each element of the turbomachine according to the invention is described as it is arranged in use.

[0066] Identical, similar or analogous elements are designated by the same references in all figures.

[0067] With reference to [Fig. 1] and [Fig. 2], the turbomachine 100 comprises a housing 110 extending in a longitudinal direction. The turbomachine 100 includes an engine configured to drive a rotating shaft 120. The rotating shaft 120 extends longitudinally inside said housing 110 and is driven in rotation about the axis of rotation XX'. The axis of rotation XX' therefore extends longitudinally inside the housing 110.

[0068] The turbomachine 100 includes at least one centrifugal wheel 130 made of magnetic material mounted at one longitudinal end of the rotating shaft 120. The centrifugal wheel 130 is, for example, a bladed or vane wheel, having a wheel body 131 extending between a fluid inlet A and a fluid outlet B. The wheel body 131 has a substantially trapezoidal profile such that the cross-sectional diameter at the fluid inlet A is smaller than the cross-sectional diameter at the fluid outlet B. The diameter of the wheel body 131 increases and extends proportionally to its position along the axis XX' between the fluid inlet A and the fluid outlet B.

[0069] The turbomachine 100 further includes a magnetic field generating device, called the axial magnetic device 140, arranged concentrically around the impeller body 131 of the centrifugal wheel 130. The axial magnetic device 140 comprises a device body 141 and a groove 142 formed along a lateral surface of said device body 151. The groove 142 houses a magnetic element 160 and has an opening extending longitudinally onto the impeller body 131 of the centrifugal wheel 130. The groove 142 is oriented to allow the flow of a magnetic flux between the axial magnetic device 140 and the impeller body 131. For this purpose, the body 141 is made of a non-magnetic material, which allows the magnetic flux to be directed onto the centrifugal wheel 130 by the orientation of said axial magnetic device 140. The axial magnetic device 140 is positioned around the impeller body 131 without contacting it. The [Fig.2] allows us to schematically appreciate the direction of the magnetic interaction between the magnetic element 160 of the axial magnetic device 140 and the relevant flanged portion 133 of the wheel body 131 of the centrifuge 130.

[0070] The turbomachine 100 further includes a second magnetic field generating device, called the radial magnetic device 150, arranged concentrically around the impeller body 131 of the centrifugal wheel 130. The radial magnetic device 150 comprises a device body 151 and a groove 152 formed along its inner surface. The groove 152 houses a magnetic element 160 and has an opening that projects transversely onto the impeller body 131 of the centrifugal wheel 130. The groove 152 is oriented to allow the flow of magnetic flux between the radial magnetic device 150 and a second flanged portion 132 of the impeller body 131. For this purpose, the device body 151 is made of a non-magnetic material, which allows the magnetic flux to be directed onto the centrifugal wheel 130 by the orientation of the radial magnetic device 150.The radial magnetic device 150 is positioned around the wheel body 131 without contacting it. Figure 2 schematically illustrates the direction of the magnetic interaction between the magnetic element 160 of the radial magnetic device 150 and the relevant flanged portion 132 of the wheel body 131 of the centrifugal wheel 130.

[0071] The centrifugal wheel 130 is fixedly mounted for rotation on the shaft 120 about the axis of rotation XX'. It should be noted that the wheel has blades, which have not been shown in the figures for the sake of simplicity. Consequently, during the operation of the turbomachine 100, the axial forces corresponding to the longitudinal displacement of the rotating shaft 120 about the axis XX' are supported and guided by the axial magnetic device 140, which acts as an active magnetic stop on the centrifugal wheel 130.

[0072] In addition, the radial forces corresponding to the transverse displacement of the rotating shaft 120 relative to the axis XX' are supported and guided by the radial magnetic device 150 which acts as an active magnetic bearing on the centrifugal wheel 130.

[0073] The magnetic devices 140 and 150 thus serve to hold the rotating shaft in position, thereby ensuring active and contactless magnetic levitation of the latter. The turbomachine 100, according to the described embodiment, thus ensures the positioning of the rotating shaft 120 while eliminating the weight and bulk of conventional active magnetic bearings on the shaft, thereby reducing its compactness.

[0074] Each magnetic element 160 can be controlled by a control system to adjust in real time the positioning of the rotating shaft 120 of the turbomachine 100.

[0075] Figure 1 schematically illustrates an embodiment in which the turbomachine 100 comprises two centrifugal wheels 130 each mounted at a respective longitudinal end of a rotating shaft 120. In this embodiment, the axial magnetic device 140 is arranged concentrically around a portion of the centrifugal wheel 130 having a larger diameter than the portion of wheel 130 around which the radial magnetic device 150 is arranged.

[0076] Figure 2 schematically illustrates the details of the orientation of the magnetic devices 140 and 150 and the flow of the magnetic flux between each of the axial magnetic devices 140 and radial 150 and the respective flanged portions 132 and 133 of the wheel body concerned.

[0077] In this figure, the magnetic devices 140 and 150 are shown in cross-section around a centrifugal wheel 130. The rotating shaft 120 and the other components of the turbomachine have not been shown for clarity.

[0078] The double dashed arrows schematically illustrate respectively the orientation of the groove 142 of the axial magnetic device 140 with respect to the wheel 130 and the orientation of the groove 152 of the radial magnetic device 150 with respect to the wheel 130.

[0079] In addition, details of the interaction between the magnetic elements 160 and the flanged portions 132 and 133 of the wheel body 131 are shown.

[0080] For the sake of simplicity, the flanged portions 132 and 133 have been shown parallel to the magnetic elements. However, it is possible to foresee that the wheel 130 may include a magnetic extension arranged on the wheel body 131 so as to increase the surface area of magnetic interaction between the magnetic devices 140 and 150 and the wheel 130.

[0081] Figure 3 schematically illustrates another embodiment of the invention in which the turbomachine 100 further comprises a secondary axial magnetic device 170 and a secondary radial magnetic device 180.

[0082] The structure of each of the axial magnetic devices 140 and radial magnetic devices 150 applies mutatis mutandis to the secondary magnetic devices 170 and 180.

[0083] However, the magnetic element of the secondary radial magnetic device 180 is oriented so as to allow the circulation of a magnetic flux between the rotating shaft 120 and said secondary radial magnetic device 180. As such, the groove of the secondary radial magnetic device 180 opens transversely onto a magnetic portion of the rotating shaft 120 which is a portion which may be of the same magnetic material as that of the flanged portions 132 and 133 of the wheel 130.

[0084] This embodiment can be applied similarly to a turbomachine 100 comprising two centrifugal wheels 130.

[0085] Furthermore, in this embodiment, it may be provided that the rotating shaft 120 may include a magnetic portion arranged on all or part of the body 121 of said shaft 120. Said portion being capable of interacting magnetically with the magnetic element 160 of said secondary radial magnetic device 180. This portion may be arranged opposite said magnetic element 160 of the magnetic device 180.

[0086] A turbomachine according to the invention can be implemented in various applications, particularly in aeronautics. For example, the turbomachine according to the invention can be used to equip an aircraft air conditioning system.
