Abstract
Description
[0001] DESCRIPTION
[0002] Title: Thermal regulation device
[0003] [1] The present invention relates to the field of thermal regulation devices, and particularly those intended for the cooling or heating of temperature-sensitive components, such as power electronic modules.
[0004] [2] In the prior art, cooling devices notably use series flows with saw-fin type fins (obtained by a skiving process) for the cooling structure and transverse meanders for the distribution of the heat transfer fluid. However, these solutions have limitations in terms of temperature homogenization, particularly in applications where several components, such as power module chips (or dies), must be maintained at homogeneous temperatures.
[0005] [3] The present invention aims in particular to achieve temperature homogenization between the different dies of power modules. Each row of dies requires temperature balancing to ensure reliability and optimize module performance and cooling efficiency (so as not to overcool). Indeed, the overall performance of the module is limited by the maximum temperature reached by any one of the dies, hence the importance of a uniform temperature distribution.
[0006] [4] The invention thus relates to a thermal regulation device for the cooling or heating of at least one temperature-sensitive component, the thermal regulation device comprising at least two external plates configured to define an enclosure for the flow of a heat transfer fluid, the enclosure having a principal direction of extension and being divided, along a height, into at least two flow stages of which:
[0007] - a first stage comprising a fluid distribution channel connected to a fluid inlet and a fluid collection channel connected to a fluid outlet;
[0008] - a second floor housing at least one finned structure comprising substantially straight fins, arranged parallel to each other forming rows of fins and in particular these rows of fins extending substantially orthogonally to the main extension direction of the enclosure;
[0009] - and the distribution channel being configured to distribute the heat transfer fluid through said at least one finned structure, and the collection channel being configured to collect the fluid having passed through the finned structure and direct it to the fluid outlet.
[0010] [5] According to one aspect of the invention, the fins are formed by flat walls.
[0011] [6] According to one aspect of the invention, the pitch between the fins is constant.
[0012] [7] Alternatively, the pitch between the fins becomes progressively smaller in the direction of heat transfer fluid flow, particularly in combination with a straight partition wall. Such a partition wall is described in more detail below.
[0013] [8] According to one aspect of the invention, the pitch between the fins within the structures is the same for all finned structures.
[0014] [9] According to one aspect of the invention, the pitch between the fins is substantially equal to 0.2 mm.
[0015]
[0010] According to one aspect of the invention, the fins extend over the entire height of the second floor.
[0016]
[0011] According to one aspect of the invention, the rows of fins are inclined with respect to the main extension direction.
[0017]
[0012] According to one aspect of the invention, all of the fluid distributed by the distribution channel circulates between the fins before reaching the collection channel.
[0018]
[0013] For example, in the case of three finned structures, one third of the fluid passes through each finned structure.
[0019]
[0014] According to one aspect of the invention, the enclosure comprises a plurality of finned structures, and the distribution channel is configured to distribute the heat transfer fluid in parallel through these different finned structures.
[0020]
[0015] By distributing the heat transfer fluid parallel to several finned structures, a more homogeneous flow is ensured. This prevents areas of overheating or undercooling, which is important for temperature-sensitive components such as power electronic modules. Furthermore, the use of multiple finned structures offers greater flexibility in the design of the thermal control device. The number, size, and arrangement of the structures can be adjusted to meet the specific application requirements in terms of thermal output, footprint, and pressure drop.
[0021]
[0016] According to one aspect of the invention, a partition is arranged in the enclosure to delimit the distribution channel and the collection channel.
[0017] According to one aspect of the invention, the partition extends obliquely between opposite lateral edges of the enclosure, these lateral edges extending along the main extension direction of the enclosure.
[0022]
[0018] According to one aspect of the invention, the partition extends obliquely from one lateral edge of the housing to an opposite lateral edge, joining them.
[0023]
[0019] Alternatively, the partition wall extends along the main extension direction of the enclosure.
[0024]
[0020] According to one aspect of the invention, the partition extends perpendicularly to the main faces of the external plates that form the enclosure.
[0025]
[0021] According to one aspect of the invention, the distribution channel and the collection channel are devoid of fins.
[0026]
[0022] According to one aspect of the invention, the partition wall connects to an internal plate supported on the finned structure.
[0027]
[0023] According to one aspect of the invention, the partition wall is a separate piece from the external plates that define the enclosure.
[0028]
[0024] According to one aspect of the invention, the inner plate is configured to force the fluid to travel along the fins over substantially their entire length.
[0029]
[0025] According to one aspect of the invention, the inner plate is arranged centrally with respect to the finned structure to distribute the fluid over the ends of the fins.
[0030]
[0026] The fluid flows between the gaps between the fins.
[0031]
[0027] According to one aspect of the invention, the finned structures are separate parts from the outer plates, then assembled together.
[0032]
[0028] According to one aspect of the invention, the finned structure comprises a base in the form of a plate, from which the fins extend.
[0033]
[0029] According to one aspect of the invention, the base of each finned structure rests, preferably is fixed, on one of the external plates.
[0034]
[0030] According to one aspect of the invention, the fins are made by removing material from an aluminum block.
[0035]
[0031] According to one aspect of the invention, the thickness of the fins is substantially equal to the interval between two adjacent fins.
[0036]
[0032] According to one aspect of the invention, the fluid inlet and fluid outlet are located at the ends of the main extension direction of the enclosure.
[0033] According to one aspect of the invention, the enclosure has a rectangular perimeter.
[0037]
[0034] According to one aspect of the invention, the partition extends along a diagonal of the rectangular perimeter.
[0038]
[0035] According to one aspect of the invention, the device comprises a connecting tube configured to be fluidically connected to another thermal control device, to the fluid inlet or to the fluid outlet.
[0039]
[0036] The fluid, starting from the distribution channel, makes a turn and heads towards the fins, then flows through the gaps between these fins to finally flow into the collection channel.
[0040]
[0037] According to one aspect of the invention, the external plates are brazed.
[0041]
[0038] According to one aspect of the invention, one of the outer plates comprises opposing lateral edges delimiting the enclosure, and optionally also the partition. The enclosure delimited by this outer plate could be closed by an additional cover, in particular a cover made by die casting or aluminum metal injection.
[0042]
[0039] According to one aspect of the invention, one of the external plates is molded at the same time as an inverter housing. This integration reduces costs.
[0043]
[0040] According to one aspect of the invention, the temperature-sensitive component includes a power electronic module.
[0044]
[0041] According to one aspect of the invention, the temperature-sensitive component includes a battery cell.
[0045]
[0042] The invention also relates to a thermal regulation assembly comprising:
[0046] - two thermal regulation devices, with at least one of them being defined as above, arranged opposite each other, defining an intervening space to house components to be cooled.
[0047]
[0043] According to one aspect of the invention, the two thermal regulation devices are as defined above, each with two stages.
[0048]
[0044] According to one aspect of the invention, the two thermal regulation devices are two-stage, and the direction of circulation of the heat transfer fluid, which is substantially orthogonal to the main extension direction, is opposite between the thermal regulation devices located on either side of the components to be cooled.
[0049]
[0045] Thus, the directions of fluid flow from one stage to another are substantially opposite between the devices.
[0046] For example, the fluid flows from top to bottom in one device and from bottom to top in the other.
[0050]
[0047] Thus, between the upper thermal regulation device and the lower thermal regulation device, the direction of fluid circulation from one floor to the other is reversed.
[0051]
[0048] According to one aspect of the invention, the components to be cooled are power electronic modules arranged in a row, in particular with chips in rows.
[0052]
[0049] According to one aspect of the invention, one of the thermal regulation devices is smaller than the other.
[0053]
[0050] Alternatively, the two thermal regulation devices are identical.
[0054]
[0051] According to one aspect of the invention, the fluid inlets are on the same side for both devices.
[0055]
[0052] According to one aspect of the invention, the fluid outlets are on the same side for both devices.
[0056]
[0053] According to one aspect of the invention, the fluid inlets of the two thermal regulation devices communicate with each other through a connecting tube orthogonal to the external plates.
[0057]
[0054] According to one aspect of the invention, the fluid outlets of the two thermal regulation devices communicate with each other through a connecting tube orthogonal to the external plates.
[0058]
[0055] According to one aspect of the invention, the stages with the finned structures are on the side of the components to be cooled.
[0059]
[0056] According to one aspect of the invention, the assembly includes an external fluid inlet tube supplying the two devices.
[0060]
[0057] According to one aspect of the invention, the assembly includes an external fluid outlet tube evacuating the fluid from the two devices.
[0061]
[0058] According to one aspect of the invention, the oblique partition walls of the two thermal regulation devices are oriented in a cross manner, as can be seen in particular in Figure 2.
[0062]
[0059] In one embodiment of the invention, the thermal regulation assembly comprises:
[0063] - a first thermal regulation device with two stages as mentioned above;
[0064] - a second thermal regulation device comprising a defined enclosure between a first external plate and a second external plate, said enclosure being configured to allow fluid circulation on a single stage, in particular along a principal extension direction (XP) between two longitudinal ends; - an intercalated space defined between said first and second thermal regulation devices to house components to be cooled.
[0065]
[0060] According to one aspect of the invention, the fins of the first outer plate are made from the same block of material as said first outer plate.
[0066]
[0061] The invention makes it possible to homogenize the temperature of the components to be cooled.
[0067]
[0062] The heat transfer fluid can enter the different finned structures at the same time, at the same temperature.
[0068]
[0063] According to one aspect of the invention, the inlet channel and the outlet channel are of relatively large size to avoid significant pressure losses.
[0069]
[0064] Parallel flow allows for a reduced pitch between the fins. By increasing the number of fins, the overall heat exchange surface area is increased.
[0070]
[0065] According to one aspect of the invention, the thermal regulation devices are configured to sandwich power electronic modules.
[0071]
[0066] According to one aspect of the invention, the electronic power modules are part of an inverter.

[0083]
[0079] The features, variants, and different embodiments of the invention can be combined in various ways, provided they are not incompatible or mutually exclusive. In particular, variants of the invention may be conceived comprising only a selection of features, described hereafter in isolation from the other described features, if this selection of features is sufficient to confer a technical advantage and / or to differentiate the invention from the prior art.
[0084]
[0080] In the following description, identical elements or elements with identical function bear the same reference numeral. For the sake of brevity, only the differences between the embodiments presented are described.
[0085]
[0081] As illustrated in the figures, it is understood by "these rows of fins extending substantially orthogonally to the main extension direction" that the main extension direction of the rows of fins is orthogonal to the extension direction of the enclosure.
[0086]
[0082] By "substantially straight fins", it is understood that the fins extend mainly in a straight line, which therefore includes the so-called "saw fins" mentioned in the introduction, considered in the state of the art as straight regardless of the precision of the manufacturing process, particularly in the "skiving" process.
[0087]
[0083] Figures 1 to 8 show a thermal regulation assembly comprising two thermal regulation devices 1 and 100, arranged opposite each other, defining an intercalated space 17 to house components 2 to be cooled.
[0088]
[0084] The thermal regulation device 1 comprises two external plates 4 and 5 configured to define an enclosure 6 for the flow of a heat transfer fluid.
[0089]
[0085] The enclosure 6 has a main extension direction XP and is divided, according to a height, into at least two flow stages including: - a first stage comprising a fluid distribution channel 7 connected to a fluid inlet 8 and a fluid collection channel 9 connected to a fluid outlet 10;
[0090] - a second floor housing at least one finned structure 11 comprising substantially straight fins 12, arranged parallel to each other in rows of fins and these rows of fins extending substantially orthogonally to the main extension direction of the enclosure 6.
[0091]
[0086] The distribution channel 7 is configured to distribute the heat transfer fluid through said at least one finned structure 11.
[0092]
[0087] The collection channel 9 is configured to collect the fluid that has passed through the finned structure 11 and direct it to the fluid outlet 10.
[0093]
[0088] The thermal regulation device 100 has a structure substantially similar to the thermal regulation device 1, and the description for the thermal regulation device 1 also applies to the thermal regulation device 100.
[0094]
[0089] The fins 12 are formed by flat walls.
[0095]
[0090] The pitch between the fins 12 is constant.
[0096]
[0091] The pitch between the fins 12 within the structures 11 is the same for all the finned structures 11, and the pitch between the fins 12 is substantially equal to 0.2 mm.
[0097]
[0092] The fins 12 extend over the entire height of the second floor.
[0098]
[0093] The entire fluid distributed by the distribution channel 7 flows between the fins 12 before reaching the collection channel 9.
[0099]
[0094] For example, in the case of three finned structures 11, one third of the fluid passes through each finned structure 11.
[0100]
[0095] The enclosure 6 comprises a plurality of finned structures 11, and the distribution channel 7 is configured to distribute the heat transfer fluid in parallel through these different finned structures 11.
[0101]
[0096] By distributing the heat transfer fluid in parallel through several finned structures 11, a more homogeneous flow is ensured.
[0102]
[0097] This helps to avoid areas of overheating or undercooling, which is important for temperature-sensitive components, such as power electronic modules.
[0103]
[0098] Furthermore, the use of several finned structures 11 offers greater flexibility in the design of the thermal regulation device 1.
[0099] The number, size and arrangement of the structures can be adjusted to meet the specific requirements of the application in terms of thermal power, size and pressure losses.
[0104]
[0100] A partition 13 is arranged in the enclosure 6 to delimit the distribution channel 7 and the collection channel 9.
[0105]
[0101] The partition 13 extends obliquely between opposite lateral edges of the enclosure 6, these lateral edges extending along the main extension direction of the enclosure 6.
[0106]
[0102] The partition 13 extends obliquely from one lateral edge of the housing to an opposite lateral edge, joining them.
[0107]
[0103] In an alternative (not shown), the partition wall 13 extends along the main extension direction of the enclosure 6.
[0108]
[0104] The partition 13 extends perpendicularly to the main faces of the external plates 4 and 5 which form the enclosure 6.
[0109]
[0105] The distribution channel 7 and the collection channel 9 are devoid of fins 12.
[0110]
[0106] The partition wall 13 connects to an internal plate 14 supported on the finned structure 11.
[0111]
[0107] Alternatively, as shown in Figure 9, the partition 13 is a separate piece 35 from the external plates 4 and 5 which define the enclosure 6.
[0112]
[0108] The inner plate 14 is configured to force the fluid to travel along the fins 12 over substantially their entire length.
[0113]
[0109] The inner plate 14 is arranged centrally with respect to the finned structure 11 to distribute the fluid over the ends of the fins 12.
[0114]
[0110] The fluid flows between the gaps between the fins 12.
[0115]
[0111] The finned structures 11 are separate parts from the outer plates 4 and 5, then assembled together.
[0116]
[0112] The finned structure 11 includes a base 15 in the form of a plate, from which the fins 12 extend.
[0117]
[0113] The base 15 of each finned structure 11 rests, preferably is fixed, on one of the external plates 4 or 5.
[0118]
[0114] The fins 12 are made by removing material from an aluminum block.
[0119]
[0115] The thickness of the fins 12 is substantially equal to the interval between two adjacent fins.
[0116] The fluid inlet 8 and the fluid outlet 10 are located at the ends of the main extension direction of the enclosure 6.
[0120]
[0117] The enclosure 6 has a rectangular perimeter, and a partition 13 extends along a diagonal of the rectangular perimeter.
[0121]
[0118] The device 1 includes a connecting tube 16 configured to be fluidically connected to another thermal control device 1, to the fluid inlet 8 or to the fluid outlet 10.
[0122]
[0119] The fluid, starting from the distribution channel 7, makes a turn and heads towards the fins 12, then flows through the gaps between these fins 12 to finally flow into the collection channel 9.
[0123]
[0120] The outer plates 4 and 5 are brazed.
[0124]
[0121] Component 2, whose operation is sensitive to temperature, includes a power electronic module.
[0125]
[0122] Component 2, whose operation is sensitive to temperature, includes a battery cell.
[0126]
[0123] The directions of fluid flow from one stage to the other are substantially opposite between devices 1 and 100. These directions are marked F1 and F2 in Figure 8 respectively for the two thermal regulation devices.
[0127]
[0124] For example, the fluid flows from top to bottom in one device 100 and from bottom to top in the other 1 (see figure 8).
[0128]
[0125] Thus, between the upper thermal regulation device 100 and the lower thermal regulation device 1, the direction of fluid circulation from one floor to the other is reversed.
[0129]
[0126] The components 2 to be cooled are power electronic modules arranged in a row, in particular with chips in rows.
[0130]
[0127] One of the thermal regulation devices 1 and 100 is smaller than the other.
[0131]
[0128] The fluid inlets 8 are on the same side for both devices 1 and 100, and the fluid outlets 10 are on the same side for both devices 1 and 100.
[0132]
[0129] The fluid inlets 8 of the two thermal regulation devices 1 communicate with each other by a connecting tube 16 orthogonal to the external plates 4 and 5.
[0133]
[0130] The fluid outlets 10 of the two thermal regulation devices 1 communicate with each other via a connecting tube 16 orthogonal to the external plates 4 and 5.
[0134]
[0131] The stages with the finned structures 11 are on the side of components 2 to
[0135] cool.
[0132] The assembly includes an external fluid inlet tube 32 supplying the two devices 1.
[0136]
[0133] The assembly includes an external outlet tube 33 for fluid evacuating the fluid from the two devices 1.
[0137]
[0134] The oblique partition walls 13 of the two thermal regulation devices 1 are oriented in a cross manner, as can be seen in particular in Figure 2.
[0138]
[0135] The invention makes it possible to homogenize the temperature of the components 2 to be cooled.
[0139]
[0136] The heat transfer fluid can enter the different finned structures 11 at the same time, at the same temperature.
[0140]
[0137] The input channel 7 and the output channel 9 are of relatively large size to avoid significant pressure losses.
[0141]
[0138] Parallel flow allows for a reduced pitch between the fins.
[0142]
[0139] By increasing the number of fins, the overall heat exchange surface area is increased.
[0143]
[0140] The thermal regulation devices 1 are configured to sandwich power electronic modules.
[0144]
[0141] The electronic power modules are part of an inverter.
[0145]
[0142] Figure 10 shows another embodiment of the invention in which the thermal regulation assembly includes a thermal regulation device 1 as described above, and another thermal regulation device 200 which will be described below.
[0146]
[0143] These thermal regulation devices 1 and 200 define, between them, an intercalary space 17 to house components to be cooled, similar to the previous embodiment example.
[0147]
[0144] As can be seen in Figure 10, the thermal regulation device 200 includes an external plate 201 which is turned towards the components to be cooled, this external plate 201 having fins 206 parallel within the enclosure 202 for the flow of the heat transfer fluid.
[0148]
[0145] This enclosure 202 is defined between the outer plate 201 and another outer plate 203. The outer plates 201 and 203 are, for example, brazed together along a peripheral perimeter of these outer plates 201 and 203.
[0149]
[0146] The fins 206 of the outer plate 201 are made for example in the same block of material as the outer plate 201.
[0147] These fins 206 are made for example by a "skiving" process which, with the help of a blade, makes it possible to cut material in the block of material and straighten it in the form of fins.
[0150]
[0148] The fins 206 occupy substantially the entire height of the enclosure 202 in which the heat transfer fluid circulates.
[0151]
[0149] As with the thermal regulation device 1, the enclosure 202 is configured to allow fluid circulation between its two longitudinal ends, each of these longitudinal ends being respectively provided with a fluid inlet and outlet.
[0152]
[0150] The enclosure 202 is designed for fluid circulation on a single floor along the main extension direction XP.
[0153]
[0151] Thus, in this example of an embodiment of the invention, one of the thermal regulation devices 1 allows fluid flow over two stages and the other of the thermal regulation devices 200 allows fluid flow over a single stage.
[0154]
[0152] As in the previous example, the fluid inlet is common for both thermal control devices 1 and 200, and the same is true for the fluid outlet.
[0153] In this example, the external plate 4 of the thermal control device 1 is also defined by the bases 15 of the finned structures 11.
[0155]
[0154] Figure 11 shows another embodiment of the invention in which each finned structure 111 comprises rows of fins 12 which are inclined with respect to the main extension direction XP.
[0156]
[0155] In other words, the fin rows are inclined with respect to the principal extension direction XP, in the plane of the outer plates 4 and 5, such that the fin rows form an angle other than 90° with the principal extension direction XP. In the example in Figure 11, the fin rows are not orthogonal to this principal extension direction XP as in the example described above.
[0157]
[0156] The angle of inclination with respect to the main extension direction XP is for example between 45° and 90°.
[0158]
[0157] Thus, instead of having a finned structure 11 with a rectangular perimeter base, the base 15 of the finned structure can be trapezoidal in shape as in the example of Figure 11.
[0159]
[0158] Figure 11 shows the arrows indicating the direction of fluid flow between the fluid inlet 8 and the fluid outlet 10.
[0159] This configuration of the fin rows with an inclination not orthogonal to the main extension direction XP allows the heat exchange surface to be maintained while limiting sudden changes in direction for the fluid and thus limiting the pressure loss.
[0160]
[0160] For example, the three finned structures 111 may be identical to each other, in particular with the same inclination of the fin rows. Alternatively, the inclination of the fin rows may vary when moving from one finned structure 111 to another.
