Description

[0001] PASSIVE LIQUID WASTE REROUTING SYSTEM FOR TOILETS

[0002] TECHNICAL FIELD

[0003] The present invention relates to sanitation and water conservation technologies or system for toilets, and more particularly to a passive liquid waste rerouting system for toilets.

[0004] BACKGROUND ART

[0005] The present invention relates to water-saving toilet technologies, specifically to a passive liquid waste re-routing system designed to significantly reduce water consumption for urine disposal. Conventional flush toilets are among the largest domestic consumers of water. In India, standard toilets typically use 10-12 liters of water per flush, with older models consuming up to 15-20 liters, while globally, conventional toilets can use 6-13 liters per flush. Even modem dual-flush or low-flow toilets, although designed to conserve water, still use 3-4 liters per flush for liquid waste, which is substantially higher than the actual requirement for hygienic urination. Excessive water use results in increased utility costs, stresses water resources, and contributes to overloading municipal sewage systems, particularly in densely populated urban areas facing water scarcity.

[0006] Studies and reports from authoritative sources highlight the magnitude of water usage and the benefits of water-saving systems. In India, the Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organisation (CPHEEO) reports standard toilet water use of 10-12 liters per flush, while dual -flush or low-flow retrofit systems can reduce water usage to 1-2 liters per urine flush. The National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) has indicated that implementing watersaving retrofit devices in households can reduce water use by 50-90%, depending on usage patterns. Globally, UNESCO’s World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP, 2017) reports that older toilets consume 6-13 liters per flush, whereas low-flow or urine-diverting systems can reduce flush volumes to 0.5-1.5 liters. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA, WaterSense Program) notes that standard toilets consume 1.6 gallons per flush (~6 liters), while high-efficiency or retrofit devices can reduce this to 1.28 gallons (~4.8 liters) or lower. The European Environment Agency (EEA, 2016) reports similar figures for countries such as Germany and Switzerland, showing savings of 70-90% for urine-specific diversion systems.

[0007]

[0008] Several prior inventions have attempted to address water conservation in toilets. Urinediverting dry toilets (UDDTs) and urine-diversion flush systems achieve water savings by separating liquid and solid waste, but often require significant structural changes to toilet bowls or plumbing and demand behavioural adjustments from users. Retrofit urine-diversion devices exist but typically involve internal funnels or mechanisms that may be difficult to install, maintain, and clean, and do not always prevent splash-back or odor effectively. Integrated systems such as WO2018082514A provide flushing-free designs but are generally intended for new constructions and cannot be retrofitted into existing toilets. Other patents, including US9737180B2, EP1135561B1, and CN106175549B, describe urine diversion devices, yet most either require complex modifications or fail to achieve ultra-low water usage and broad applicability for lay users.

[0009] There is therefore a critical need for a simple, cost-effective, durable, and easy-to-install solution that significantly reduces water usage for urine disposal, can be adopted by laypersons without specialized skills, and is suitable for retrofitting existing toilets as well as incorporation in new builds. The present invention provides a passive liquid waste re-routing system that addresses these needs by using a sloped tray, anti-splash mesh, and flexible conduit to divert urine efficiently, requiring less than 150-200 ml of water per flush. The system is hygienic, easy to maintain, and compatible with a variety of toilet types, including floor-mounted and wall-mounted models.

[0010] By reducing water volume per flush, the invention also reduces the hydraulic load on municipal sewage systems and wastewater treatment plants, improving operational efficiency and lowering energy and chemical requirements. The system’s cost-effectiveness, simplicity, and durability, combined with high efficiency, make it a practical and sustainable solution forhouseholds, offices, public facilities, and metro cities facing water scarcity and high wastewater management challenges.

[0106] In an additional embodiment of the invention, the integrated system is designed to operate passively, requiring no sensors or electricity, while providing a complete, ergonomically optimized toilet solution that combines the benefits of urine diversion, water savings, and easy maintenance.

[0107] In an embodiment of the invention, the collecting mechanism of the passive liquid waste rerouting system is configured to maintain a residual water column within the flexible tube, funnel, or conduit, positioned between the sloped tray outlet and the toilet trap. The retained water acts as a seal, preventing the ingress of sewer gases into the toilet environment while still allowing liquid waste to flow smoothly through the conduit.

[0108] In an embodiment of the invention, the water column is maintained passively by the design of the outlet, funnel, and tube geometry, ensuring that a small amount of water remains in the lowest section of the collecting mechanism after flushing or rinsing, without requiring any additional valves or mechanical components.

[0109] In an embodiment of the invention, the retained water column can be replenished during cleaning or minimal flushing, using approximately 100-150 ml of water from a handheld bidet, sprayer, or water mug, thereby restoring the gas barrier after each use while maintaining hygiene. In an embodiment of the invention, the water column retention is combined with the selfcleaning mechanism, ensuring that the conduit and tray are rinsed while the gas-sealing water barrier is preserved, preventing odor and maintaining a hygienic user environment.

[0110] In an embodiment of the invention, the height, diameter, and slope of the collecting conduit are optimized to stably retain the water column under normal usage conditions, even in households with varying water pressures or flush volumes, ensuring consistent prevention of sewer gas entry.

[0111] In an embodiment of the invention, upon urination on the sloped tray, the liquid waste passes through the anti-splash mesh, which reduces droplet velocity and prevents splash-back. Gravity causes the liquid to flow along the inclined surface of the tray toward an outlet located at the rear end, where it enters a funnel forming part of the collecting mechanism. The evacuation tube assembly conveys the liquid through the toilet trap into the existing drainage system, ensuring unobstructed flow without interfering with solid waste disposal.

[0112] In this embodiment, the tray can be cleaned by rinsing with approximately 100-150 ml of water, which can be supplied using a handheld bidet or sprayer, commonly available in most toilet installations, or manually using a water mug. The rinsing ensures that all urine remnants are removed from the tray and conduit, while simultaneously maintaining a residual water column within the tube, which blocks the ingress of sewer gases and preserves hygiene

[0113] In an embodiment of the invention, a method for diverting and conserving liquid waste in a toilet system comprises the following steps:

[0114] 1. Attaching the passive liquid waste rerouting system to a toilet seat, wherein the system includes a sloped tray, mesh, lifting mechanism, and collecting mechanism.

[0115] 2. Optionally adjusting the height of the sloped tray using a height adjusting mechanism to position the tray at a distance suitable for the user.

[0116] 3. Passing liquid waste from the user onto the sloped surface of the tray, such that the liquid flows by gravity toward the tray outlet while passing through the anti-splash mesh to reduce droplet velocity and prevent splashing.

[0117] 4. Diverting the liquid waste from the tray outlet into the collecting mechanism, which includes a funnel and flexible conduit that guides the liquid into the toilet trap or waste Pipe-5. Flushing the liquid waste using a minimal amount of water, sufficient to clear the tray and conduit, thereby reducing water consumption while maintaining hygiene.

[0119] 7. Optionally, utilizing an odor-removing mesh or surface treatment on the tray or mesh to neutralize odors and maintain a hygienic environment.

[0120] In an additional embodiment of the invention, the sloped tray is made from a non-toxic, petsafe material, such as food-grade polypropylene or silicone-coated polymers, preventing any chemical harm if contacted by pets. The surface is smooth and rounded at the edges to reduce the risk of injury.

[0121] In an additional embodiment of the invention, the sloped tray can be adjusted to a lower height using the height-adjusting or lifting mechanism, allowing small pets, such as cats or small dogs, to use the tray comfortably without strain.

[0122] In an additional embodiment of the invention, the anti-splash mesh is designed with rounded, non-abrasive apertures to prevent paws or claws from being caught, and may be coated with a pet-safe material such as silicone or food-grade polymer.

[0123] In an additional embodiment of the invention, the odor-removing mesh and surface coatings utilize pet-safe odor-neutralizing materials, such as activated carbon or zeolite, ensuring that pets are not exposed to toxic chemicals while maintaining hygiene.

[0124] In an additional embodiment of the invention, the flexible conduit is covered or encased in a pet-resistant sleeve, preventing chewing or interference by pets while still allowing smooth passage of liquid waste into the toilet trap.

[0125] In an additional embodiment of the invention, the tray includes dual adjustable heights, one for human use and a lower height for small pets, enabling a single system to be shared safely between humans and pets in the same household.

[0133] In an exemplary embodiment of the invention, a conventional toilet with older flush mechanisms uses 5 liters per urination flush, whereas the passive system operates with 1-1.2 liters per flush. For a family of 4 with 5 uses per person daily, conventional toilets consume 100 liters per day, while the passive system consumes approximately 20-24 liters per day, resulting in a 76-80% water saving per day.

[0134] In an exemplary embodiment of the invention, considering urban apartments in India, a conventional dual-flush toilet with moderate water efficiency uses 2 liters per urination flush. Using the system described herein at 1 liter per flush, a 4-member family using 5 flushes each per day consumes 40 liters with conventional toilets and 20 liters with the invention, achieving a 50% reduction in daily water consumption, equivalent to 20 liters saved per day.TABLE 1: EXAMPLE 1-5
