Solution Overview

Problem

Current 3GPP radio access networks lack efficient mechanisms to optimize the uplink transmission of Cooperative Awareness Messages (CAMs) in C-ITS systems, leading to excessive radio resource usage and potential network congestion, especially with hundreds of vehicles transmitting messages frequently.

Innovation Solution

The proposed solution involves a method where a server determines the requirements for cooperative awareness messages, requests resources and QoS parameters from the network, and provides criteria to the application client for filtering and marking messages to optimize their transmission, using IPv4/IPv6 markers and protocol control information to manage message priority and discard rules, thereby controlling which messages are sent over the Uu interface.

Engineering Contradictions & Design Principles

VSEngineering Contradiction Analysis

1Reliability

If all cooperative awareness messages are transmitted to the network, then complete awareness information is provided, but radio resource usage and network congestion increase excessively

Engineering Contradiction:
Improvecooperative awareness information completenessVSAvoidradio resource usage
Core Design Contradiction:
ReliabilityVSQuantity of substance

Solution Approach 1:

The server determines application requirements and network resource availability in advance, then provides filtering criteria to the application client before message transmission. This preliminary action enables the client to filter messages locally, reducing the quantity of transmitted messages while ensuring that only relevant messages are sent, thus resolving the contradiction between information completeness and resource consumption

Inventive Principle:
Principle #10Preliminary action

Solution Approach 2:

The patent applies different filtering criteria to different application clients based on their specific requirements and the network's resource availability. Each client receives customized criteria that reflect local conditions, allowing selective transmission of messages that are most relevant to each client's application needs, thereby optimizing radio resource usage while maintaining necessary awareness information

Inventive Principle:
Principle #3Local quality

2Quantity of substance

If message filtering criteria are provided to application clients, then radio resource usage is reduced, but system complexity increases

Engineering Contradiction:
Improveradio resource usageVSAvoidmessage filtering system complexity
Core Design Contradiction:
Quantity of substanceVSDevice complexity

Solution Approach 1:

The server acts as an intermediary that centralizes the complex task of determining filtering criteria based on application requirements and network resource availability. This mediator approach transfers the complexity from the distributed clients to the centralized server, reducing the complexity burden on individual devices while still achieving efficient message filtering and reduced radio resource usage

Inventive Principle:
Principle #24Intermediary (Mediator)

Solution Approach 2:

The system separates the filtering function into two distinct parts: the server handles criterion determination and distribution, while the application client handles local message filtering based on received criteria. This segmentation allows each component to focus on a specific task, simplifying the overall system architecture despite the added filtering functionality

Inventive Principle:
Principle #1Segmentation
