Solution Overview

Problem

Existing ferrite inductors fail to provide sufficient current for high-speed processing units and wide displays in portable devices, and miniaturization of lead frame type metal winding inductors is difficult due to challenges in forming external terminals when the coil is disposed perpendicular to the mounting surface.

Innovation Solution

A coil electronic component with a new lead structure where external terminals are folded to change the lead direction by 90°, allowing for simple formation and low DC resistance, and excellent DC-bias characteristics, by having side surface portions folded in the width direction and bottom surface portions folded in the bottom surface direction of the magnetic body.

Engineering Contradictions & Design Principles

VSEngineering Contradiction Analysis

1Reliability

If the coil is disposed perpendicular to the mounting surface, then the DC-bias characteristics are improved, but the formation of external terminals becomes difficult

Engineering Contradiction:
ImproveDC-bias characteristicsVSAvoidformation of external terminals
Core Design Contradiction:
ReliabilityVSEase of manufacture

Solution Approach 1:

The external terminals are configured to extend in multiple directions (side surface portions extending in the width direction, bottom surface portions extending in the bottom surface direction) to accommodate the perpendicular coil orientation, transforming a two-dimensional terminal layout into a three-dimensional structure that resolves the manufacturing difficulty

Inventive Principle:
Principle #17Another dimension (Dimensionality change)

Solution Approach 2:

The external terminals are divided into multiple segments (side surface portions and bottom surface portions) that can be independently formed and connected to the coil leads, allowing flexible adaptation to the perpendicular coil orientation and simplifying the overall formation process

Inventive Principle:
Principle #1Segmentation

2Volume of moving object

If the lead length is reduced for miniaturization, then the device size is reduced, but the DC resistance increases

Engineering Contradiction:
Improvedevice sizeVSAvoidDC resistance
Core Design Contradiction:
Volume of moving objectVSLoss of energy

Solution Approach 1:

The external terminals utilize three-dimensional space by extending in multiple directions (width direction and bottom surface direction) rather than simply lengthening in one direction, allowing compact device size while maintaining adequate current conduction paths

Inventive Principle:
Principle #17Another dimension (Dimensionality change)

Solution Approach 2:

The side surface portions and bottom surface portions of the external terminals are integrally formed and connected, creating a combined structure that provides multiple parallel current paths, thereby reducing DC resistance without increasing overall device dimensions

Inventive Principle:
Principle #5Merging (Combining)

AI summary

A coil electronic component includes a magnetic body in which a coil having leads exposed to side surfaces of the coil is disposed. External terminals are connected to the leads and disposed on outer surfaces of the magnetic body. Additionally, the external terminals are folded to have side surface portions which are disposed on end surfaces of the magnetic body, and bottom surface portions which are disposed on a bottom surface of the magnetic body.
