Mixed Content Digital Ink Editing via Gesture Boundaries
Find Innovative SolutionsGenerate Solutions
Solution Overview
Problem
Conventional digital handwriting applications on computing devices are limited in providing a full document creation experience, as they focus on recognition accuracy rather than document creation, leading to difficulties in editing and manipulating handwritten content, which disrupts the creative flow and limits productivity in collaborative environments.
Innovation Solution
The system and method provide interactive ink on computing devices by recognizing handwriting input, allocating references to ink elements, defining boundaries, and allowing editing through intuitive gestures, with a typeset input subsystem that receives input from various sources, including virtual keyboards and handwriting recognition tools, to enhance editing and manipulation of digital ink.
Engineering Contradictions & Design Principles
Engineering Contradiction Analysis
1Measurement precision
If handwriting recognition applications focus on recognition accuracy, then recognition precision is improved, but document creation capability deteriorates
Solution Approach 1:
The application provides multiple interaction modes (handwriting input, typing input, gesture control) and content types (digital ink, typeset ink, mixed content) within a single document creation environment, allowing the system to serve both recognition accuracy needs and document creation versatility requirements simultaneously
2Ease of operation
If users manually re-type handwriting content, then editing capability is improved, but productivity deteriorates
Solution Approach 1:
The system automatically provides editing capabilities through gesture-based interactions and contextual menus that work directly with the digital ink content, eliminating the need for manual re-typing while maintaining full editing functionality, thus preserving both ease of operation and productivity
3Manufacturing precision
If original handwriting layout is discarded during import, then typeset ink quality is improved, but user reference capability deteriorates
Solution Approach 1:
The system merges digital ink (original handwriting with layout) and typeset ink (recognized text with formatting) into a single mixed content document, allowing users to access both the high-quality typeset representation and the original handwriting layout simultaneously without losing either
4Measurement precision
If specific gestures are required for digital ink editing, then editing precision is improved, but ease of operation deteriorates
Solution Approach 1:
The system provides dynamic interaction options where users can choose between gesture-based editing (for precision) and menu-based or keyboard-based editing (for ease of operation), adapting to different user needs and contexts within the same application

AI summary
A system, method and computer program product for use in providing interactive ink from handwriting input to a computing device are provided. The computing device is connected to an input device in the form of an input surface. A user is able to provide input by applying pressure to or gesturing above the input surface using either his or her finger or an instrument such as a stylus or pen. The present system and method monitors the input strokes. The computing device further has a processor and an ink management system for recognizing the handwriting input under control of the processor. The ink management system is configured to cause display of, on a display interface of a computing device, first digital ink in accordance with first handwriting input, allocate references to ink elements of the first digital ink, define boundaries of the first digital ink associated with the allocated references, cause placement of an editing position at a defined boundary in response to an editing gesture, cause display of, on the display interface of the computing device, first typeset ink in accordance with first typeset input at the editing position.
