Engineering Contradictions & Design Principles
Engineering Contradiction Analysis
1Reliability
If a deposition process is used to manufacture organic light-emitting devices, then device performance can be achieved, but material loss occurs frequently and large-area devices are difficult to manufacture
Solution Approach 1:
The patent employs a solution process using inkjet printing technology, where the ink composition is deposited as a liquid solution rather than through vapor deposition. This hydraulic approach allows precise material placement, reduces material loss, and enables large-area device fabrication while maintaining performance
Solution Approach 2:
The patent changes the physical state of the organic material from solid (deposition) to dissolved solution (inkjet printing). By formulating the organic compound in a soluble ink composition with specific solvents and concentration ratios, the manufacturing process transitions to a liquid-phase deposition method that minimizes material waste
2Reliability
If a deposition process is used to manufacture organic light-emitting devices, then device performance can be achieved, but it is difficult to manufacture large-area devices
Solution Approach 1:
The inkjet printing process uses liquid ink composition that can be precisely jetted onto large substrates, enabling uniform material distribution over large areas. The solution process allows the organic material to be deposited in a controlled liquid state, facilitating large-area device manufacturing
Solution Approach 2:
The patent divides the organic material into discrete ink droplets that are jetted onto the substrate in a patterned manner. This segmentation approach allows precise placement of material only where needed, enabling large-area coverage while maintaining material efficiency and device performance
3Area of stationary object
If a solution process is used with ink composition, then large-area devices with uniform thickness can be manufactured, but material stability and layer uniformity must be maintained
Solution Approach 1:
The patent creates a composite ink composition system combining the organic compound with specific solvents (toluene, chloroform, or cyclohexane) in optimized ratios. This composite formulation ensures uniform dissolution, stable viscosity, and consistent drying characteristics, maintaining layer uniformity across large areas
Solution Approach 2:
The patent carefully controls the concentration of the organic compound in the ink composition (typically 1-10 wt%) and adjusts solvent ratios to optimize viscosity and drying properties. These parameter optimizations ensure uniform film formation and maintain composition stability during the printing and drying processes
Applied Scientific Principles
This section explains which scientific principles are used to turn an abstract innovation direction into a practical engineering solution.
Function Achieved in This Case
The solution process enables large-area devices with uniform thickness and improved light emission characteristics, reducing material loss and enhancing device stability.
Implementation Method 1
An organic light emission phenomenon is one of the examples of converting an electric current into visible rays through an internal process of a specific organic molecule. The principle of the organic light emission phenomenon is as follows. When an organic material layer is disposed between an anode and a cathode and an electric current is applied between the two electrodes, electrons and holes are injected into the organic material layer from the cathode and the anode, respectively. The electrons and the holes which are injected into the organic material layer are recombined to form an exciton, and the exciton falls down again to the ground state to emit light.
