SGSN ISR Activation via HSS Subscriber Data
Find Innovative SolutionsGenerate Solutions
Solution Overview
Problem
Existing communication technologies fail to optimally activate and deactivate Idle State Signaling Reduction (ISR) based on the PS-only subscription attribute of a user equipment (UE), leading to unnecessary signaling and energy consumption.
Innovation Solution
A method and network-side device where the Serving General Packet Radio Service (SGSN) determines the presence of Circuit Switched (CS) domain subscriber data and activates ISR only if none is present, regardless of the UE's reported capabilities, and supports the SMSinSGSN feature to optimize ISR activation.
Engineering Contradictions & Design Principles
Engineering Contradiction Analysis
1Reliability
If the SGSN deactivates ISR unconditionally upon receiving the combined EPS/IMSI attachment capability indicator from the UE, then the UE can operate with CSFB and SMS over SGs, but unnecessary signaling and energy consumption occur when the subscriber has PS-only service
Solution Approach 1:
The patent changes the decision parameter for ISR deactivation from solely relying on UE-reported capability indicators to incorporating subscriber service type information obtained from the HSS. The SGSN now queries the HSS to determine whether the subscriber has PS-only service, and uses this parameter to dynamically adjust the ISR activation state, avoiding unnecessary deactivation for PS-only subscribers.
2Adaptability or versatility
If the UE reports combined EPS/IMSI attachment capability unconditionally, then the SGSN can deactivate ISR for CSFB and SMS over SGs support, but the capability report does not reflect the actual service subscription context
Solution Approach 1:
The patent introduces the HSS as an intermediary between the UE and SGSN. The HSS provides authoritative subscriber service type information (PS-only or not) to the SGSN, which then makes the final ISR activation decision. This intermediary resolves the information loss by providing the missing service subscription context that the UE capability indicator alone cannot convey.
3Productivity
If additional indicators are introduced to RAU Request or MME-SGSN interface messages to indicate combined service registration status, then ISR deactivation can be optimized, but signaling overhead and interface complexity increase
Solution Approach 1:
The patent extracts the service type determination function from the UE and interface signaling, and places it in the network core (HSS). Instead of adding complex indicators to multiple interfaces (RAU Request, MME-SGSN), the solution simplifies the approach by having the SGSN query the HSS directly for subscriber service type information, removing the need for additional interface indicators.

AI summary
A method and network device for confirming ISR activation, optimize the way of activating ISR to solve the defects of prior art that the characteristics of the ISR can not be fully utilized, caused by activating ISR only depending on the EMM combined procedures capability reported by UE. The method comprises: serving general packet radio service (GPRS) support node (SGSN) obtains the subscription data of user equipment (UE); and SGSN activates ISR for the UE when SGSN confirms there is no circuit switch (CS) domain subscription data in the UE's subscription data. Meanwhile, in the present invention other two methods and network devices for confirming ISR activation are also disclosed.
