Sidelink Positioning Relay for Out-of-Coverage WTRU Location
Find Innovative SolutionsGenerate Solutions
Solution Overview
Problem
Current 5G systems face limitations in providing location services to wireless transmit/receive units (WTRUs) that are out of coverage, as existing methods rely on network interactions or last known location information, which can be unreliable due to mobility and require significant overhead.
Innovation Solution
Implementing sidelink positioning using ProSe Relay and PC5-based communication to enable WTRUs to determine their location relative to a located WTRU when out of coverage, with deferred or periodic location requests managed by the network through AMF and LMF.
Engineering Contradictions & Design Principles
Engineering Contradiction Analysis
1Reliability
If the network uses last known location information to select located WTRUs for SL positioning, then the location service can be initiated, but the selection may fail due to WTRU mobility and requires broadening the search area which increases signaling overhead
Solution Approach 1:
The network performs preliminary actions by maintaining and updating candidate located WTRU lists before location requests are needed. When a WTRU is in coverage, the network proactively identifies and stores potential located WTRUs that could assist with future positioning, along with their coverage areas and capability information. This preliminary preparation eliminates the need to broaden search areas when location requests occur, reducing signaling overhead while maintaining reliable location service delivery.
2Adaptability or versatility
If the network broadens the search area for selecting located WTRUs to account for mobility, then location service can be provided, but more PC5 signaling is required and overhead increases
Solution Approach 1:
The system performs preliminary identification and storage of candidate located WTRUs with their coverage area information before location requests are needed. This advance preparation allows the network to quickly select appropriate located WTRUs based on the target WTRU's last known location and mobility patterns, maintaining adaptability to mobility without requiring broadened search areas and excessive PC5 signaling.
Solution Approach 2:
The network maintains localized candidate lists for different geographic areas, storing information about located WTRUs specific to each region. When a location request occurs, the network queries the appropriate local candidate list based on the target WTRU's location, providing adaptability to mobility while minimizing the need for wide-area signaling by focusing searches on relevant local areas only.
3Reliability
If the network maintains candidate located WTRU lists, then location service reliability improves, but system complexity and overhead increase
Solution Approach 1:
Located WTRUs autonomously provide their own capability information and coverage area data to the network without requiring complex network management. When a located WTRU becomes available, it self-registers with the network, providing its positioning capabilities and coverage information. This self-service approach maintains reliable location service delivery while minimizing network complexity by eliminating the need for the network to actively manage and update detailed candidate information.

AI summary
A wireless transmit/receiver unit (WTRU) is configured with PC5 Signaling by a ProSe layer and for ranging and sidelink (SL) positioning. The WTRU is further configured to initiate a connection setup for SL positioning with a relay WTRU when the target WTRU is out of coverage. The WTRU locates potential relay WTRUs having a known location within a network. The WTRU connects to one relay WTRU via SL positioning and receives from the relay WTRU a deferred mobile terminated location request or a periodic location request for the target WTRU location information. The WTRU may further receive a location request from an Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) or a Location Management Function (LMF) in a network, wherein the AMF/LMF sends the location request to the target WTRU via the relay WTRU.
