Multi-Document Summarization Engine for Search Result Synthesis
Find Innovative SolutionsGenerate Solutions
Solution Overview
Problem
Traditional search engines face challenges in providing users with an efficient way to compare and contrast multiple search results, especially when dealing with diverse media types, as they often require users to inspect each result individually and lack robust query customization options for accurate retrieval.
Innovation Solution
A system that integrates a search engine with a multi-document summarization engine, allowing users to generate a metadata-based search summary that summarizes relevant search results, with each sentence or text fragment sourced and referenced, enabling users to view key information without navigating individual sources.
Engineering Contradictions & Design Principles
Engineering Contradiction Analysis
1Quantity of substance
If traditional search engines provide multiple search results, then users can access diverse information, but users must inspect each result individually which increases time consumption and reduces efficiency
Solution Approach 1:
The patent extracts key information from multiple search results and presents it as a synthesized summary. The multi-document summarization engine analyzes search results and extracts essential information, allowing users to obtain the gist of multiple documents without reading each one completely, thus reducing time loss while maintaining access to diverse information.
Solution Approach 2:
The patent introduces a multi-document summarization engine as an intermediary between the search engine and the user. This intermediary component processes multiple search results and generates a summarized presentation, acting as a mediator that filters and synthesizes information to reduce the cognitive load and time required for users to process search results.
2Adaptability or versatility
If traditional search engines list multiple search results, then users can find diverse media types, but users cannot compare and contrast results in real time
Solution Approach 1:
The patent merges multiple search results into a unified summary presentation. The multi-document summarization engine combines information from diverse media types (text, images, videos) into a cohesive summary that preserves the diversity of sources while presenting them in an integrated format, enabling users to compare and contrast results more easily.
Solution Approach 2:
The summarization engine serves as an intermediary that processes diverse media types and transforms them into a comparable summary format. This intermediary layer standardizes the presentation of diverse results, making them easier to compare and contrast while maintaining the original diversity of media types.
3Loss of information
If search engines provide detailed search results, then users can access comprehensive information, but the system complexity increases
Solution Approach 1:
The patent extracts only the essential information from comprehensive search results to create summaries. The multi-document summarization engine analyzes detailed results and extracts key points, allowing users to access the most important information without processing the full complexity of the original detailed results, thus reducing system complexity while maintaining information completeness.
Solution Approach 2:
The patent segments the search result processing into distinct components: a search engine that retrieves results, a multi-document summarization engine that processes and summarizes them, and a presentation layer that displays the summary. This segmentation divides the complex system into manageable modules, each with specific functions, reducing overall system complexity while maintaining comprehensive information access.
4Reliability
If users navigate individual search results, then users can access original sources, but the retrieval process becomes less efficient
Solution Approach 1:
The patent performs preliminary summarization of search results before users need to access them. The multi-document summarization engine pre-processes search results and generates summaries in advance, allowing users to quickly review summarized information and only navigate to original sources when necessary, thus improving retrieval efficiency while maintaining the ability to access original sources.
Solution Approach 2:
The summarization engine acts as an intermediary that provides a condensed view of search results before users access original sources. This intermediary layer enables users to efficiently evaluate whether they need to navigate to individual sources, improving retrieval efficiency while preserving the path to original sources for when needed.

AI summary
A method for searching multiple documents on a computer system includes steps for inputting a search query and sending the search query to a system core where the query is passed to a search component for searching the documents. The system core in turn receives results from the search component indicating related documents to the query and passes to a summarization component a specified number of the results. The summarization component processes related documents corresponding to the specified number of results and removes duplicate results to produce a multi-document summary that can have different media formats including text, image, and video formats. The system core receives the summary from the summarization component. The multi-document summary is received from the system core and displayed. The results from the search component are also displayed.
