AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Chairs with pivotable seats often have limited comfort options and require significant space when not in use, as they cannot accommodate a more extensive pivoting movement for compact storage.

Method used

A dual-mode mechanism allows the seat to pivot further when unloaded, transitioning to a compact storage configuration, and limits tilting when loaded for use, with an optional leg retraction mechanism for further space reduction.

Benefits of technology

The chair provides enhanced comfort and significantly reduces its footprint for storage by allowing extensive pivoting when not in use and limited tilting when in use, with adaptive support for various user sizes and postures.

Abstract

A chair is equipped with a dual-mode tilt and collapsing mechanism, and / or a release mechanism for use when reconfiguring the chair between a ready-to-use configuration and a collapsible configuration, and / or a leg extension and retraction mechanism that is operable to extend and retract legs of the chair in response to moving a chair seat into and out of a collapsed position. Optionally the chair may be equipped with all three mechanisms, which provides for simplified conversion or reconfiguring of the chair between the ready-to-use configuration and the collapsed configuration that occupies substantially less floor space and less vertical space. Seating comfort of the chair is enhanced by the dual-mode tilt and collapsing mechanism in the ready-to-use configuration, which permits limited rearward tilting of the seat and seatback as a user shifts their weight on the seat.
