AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing solid-state drives (SSDs) have inconsistent performance in terms of latency and throughput, especially when using different SSD controller implementations or nonvolatile memory types, it is difficult to guarantee the same level of performance.

Method used

The wait time and throughput of the SSD are controlled by adjusting the wait duration and polling duration associated with reading, writing, and/or erasing data in the SSD nonvolatile memory.

Benefits of technology

Control of SSD performance is implemented, ensuring that SSDs have similar performance even with different SSD controller implementations or nonvolatile memory types.

Abstract

A storage access request to access a solid state drive (SSD) is received. A storage access timer is set using a duration, wherein the duration is based on expected performance of the SSD. A nonvolatile memory command associated with the storage access request is sent to a nonvolatile memory. The storage access timer is started. A determination is made as to whether the nonvolatile memory has completed execution of the nonvolatile memory command after the storage access timer indicates that the duration has elapsed. If the nonvolatile memory has completed execution of the nonvolatile memory command, an indication of completion of the storage access request is sent to a host. Alternatively, if the nonvolatile memory has not completed execution of the nonvolatile memory command, the storage access timer is reset using the duration.
