AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

When existing electrical converters convert the DC voltage of photovoltaic components to AC grid voltage, they are complex and huge, making it difficult to achieve efficient, compact and low-cost conversion.

Method used

An electrical converter topology is adopted, which includes multiple DC power banks and a switching circuit, and the DC power bank is alternately connected between the input and the output through a controllable electrical switch to realize the charging and discharging of energy.

Benefits of technology

High efficiency electrical conversion is achieved, compact and low-cost design, able to adapt to a wide input voltage range, and supports DC, AC or multi-level outputs.

Abstract

An electrical converter that converts an AC or DC input into an electrical AC or DC output. A switching circuit having controllable electrical switches for selectively switching the connection of a plurality of DC power banks (DCBs) between input terminals and output terminals, thereby selectively connecting the DCBs to a power source or an electrical load. The DCBs are formed as a series of interconnected submodules (SMs), each SM having one or more electrical energy storage elements (ESEs) and a switching circuit for selectively bypassing or connecting the ESEs. The ESEs may be capacitors, batteries, supercapacitors, or a combination thereof. By appropriately controlling the switching of the switching circuit and the SMs, for example by taking into account the dead time of the included electrical switches, the converter can be used for DC-AC, DC-DC, AC-DC, or AC-AC conversion, thereby allowing multi-level outputs. In some embodiments, this can eliminate the need for an unfolded converter, and the converter provides a fairly simple and efficient topology, for example suitable for connecting a DC input from a photovoltaic element to an AC grid.
