Optimized energy management system

Methods and systems are provided for optimizing the control of energy supply and demand. An energy control unit includes one or more algorithms for scheduling the control of energy consumption devices on the basis of variables relating to forecast energy supply and demand. Devices for which energy consumption can be scheduled or deferred are activated during periods of cheapest energy usage. Battery storage and alternative energy sources (e.g., photovoltaic cells) are activated to sell energy to the power grid during periods that are determined to correspond to favorable cost conditions.

Method and apparatus for wireless powering and recharging

An arrangement is provided for charging a charge storage device by placing the charge storage device in an RF or microwave radiation field. One or more antennas which receive the radiated RF electromagnetic field are placed on the charge storage device. Rectifiers connected to the antennas rectify the received RF electromagnetic field an produce a DC output current which is used to charge the charge storage device. The charge storage device may be a battery or a capacitor and may form an integral part of an electronic device. The same RF field that charges the charge storage device can also be employed to communicate data to transponders which may be associated with computing devices.

Portable Power Supply Device

A portable power supply device comprises a stackable battery housing locating a plurality of batteries therein and an inverter housing locating an inverter therein which is arranged to convert the direct current from the batteries to an alternating current. The inverter housing is readily separable from the battery housing such that one or more battery housings can be readily interchangeable to provide a constant supply of power and to allow a variety of charging configurations of the batteries. First electrical connectors on the battery housing and second electrical connectors on the inverter housing automatically connect the inverter to the batteries upon stacking of the inverter housing on the battery housing. Furthermore charging terminals are mounted externally on the inverter housing for ready access to connect to a charging device in a convenient manner without requiring the housings to be opened or separated form one another.

Uninterruptible power supply systems and enclosures

One embodiment of the invention provides a UPS including a precharge circuit and a battery pack sensor electrically coupled to the precharge circuit. The sensor senses the presence of an extra battery pack. The precharge circuit includes: a first precharge contact; a capacitor having first and second leads, the first lead electrically coupled to the first contact; a second precharge contact electrically coupled to the second lead of the capacitor; a current limiting circuit having first and second leads, the first lead of the current limiting circuit electrically coupled to the first lead of the capacitor; and a third precharge contact electrically coupled to the second lead of the current limiting circuit. The UPS can further include an enclosure having a housing and a battery connector integral to the housing, the battery connector adapted to receive the first, second and third precharge contacts.

Cordless device system

A cordless instrument (20, 40) detachable from a charger (10, 30, 31) is attached to the charger (10, 30, 31), and is charged. A first storage part (12, 33) chargeable from a direct current source (11, 32) included in the charger (10, 30, 31), a first charge and discharge control circuit (13, 50) to control charge and discharge of the first storage part (12, 33), a second storage part (21, 43) included in the cordless instrument (20, 40), and a second charge and discharge control circuit (22, 45) to control charge and discharge of the second storage part (21, 43) are provided. Further, a third storage part (28) chargeable from the direct current source (11, 32) may be provided. Also to the cordless instrument (20, 40), a fourth storage part (44) may be provided. Upon attaching the cordless instrument, the second storage part (21, 43) is charged at least from the first storage part (12, 33). In comparison with charging time to conventional secondary batteries, it is capable of rapid charge, long life use, resulting in such merits as to realize the compact size of a charger and low cost.

Power line universal monitor

The invention is primarily directed to hot-stick mountable wireless High Voltage Power Line Universal Monitors (PLUM) upon energized electrical power conductors. The PLUM wireless sensors monitor parameters associated with normal, overload and emergency operation of the power line. The present invention provides 0.2% metering grade voltage measurement accuracy through unique e-field measurements, synchronized through UltraSatNet Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) accuracy timing pulses. The invention further improves accuracy using a unique calibration technique during initial installation of the PLUM sensor modules. A PLUM master controller receives time-synchronized data from multiple modules within a substation and across a state-wide power grid for accurate post-fault, sequence-of-events analysis, high impedance fault signature analysis, and environmental and earthquake monitoring.

Systems and methods for wireless power

The present invention is a wireless power system which includes components which can be recharged by harvesting wireless power, wireless power transmitters for transmitting the power, and devices which are powered from the components. Features such as temperature monitoring, tiered network protocols including both data and power communication, and power management strategies related to both charging and non-charging operations, are used to improve performance of the wireless network. Rechargeable batteries which are configured to be recharged using wireless power have unique components specifically tailored for recharging operations rather than for providing power to a device. A wireless power supply for powering implanted devices benefits from an external patient controller which contains features for adjusting both power transmission and harvesting provided by other components of the wireless power network.
