AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing audio-based asthma monitoring solutions rely on contact stethoscopes, limiting the scope and scalability of data collection, and making it difficult to train robust and generalizable models due to high cost of medical participation.

Method used

Active learning (AL) system is used to collect and annotate audio data, and automatically extract audio clips and efficiently annotate, reducing annotation costs and improving model performance. The system includes extracting audio blocks from unlabeled data streams, automatically segmenting and annotating using pre-trained models to enable large-scale audio data management.

Benefits of technology

Under the restricted annotation budget, the annotation cost is reduced, the model performance is improved, and the larger-scale data management of the childhood asthma audio corpus is effectively promoted, and more scalable data collection and annotation are achieved.

Abstract

Bio-sounds used to determine the presence of a medical condition are actively learned. A method and system for training an audio-based machine learning model to predict a health condition based on biological sound emitted by a person. Audio data corresponding to a biological sound generated by a person is generated from a microphone. The audio data is segmented into a plurality of segments, each segment being associated with a respective sound event. An audio-based machine learning model is executed on the plurality of segments. The audio-based machine learning model is configured to output, for each segment, a marker of the medical condition and an associated confidence score. The model is trained via active learning in which a subset of the plurality of segments is selected based on confidence scores of the plurality of segments below a threshold and provided to a human for annotation.
