AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing cryotherapy devices have limitations in otolaryngology applications, making it difficult to achieve efficient and safe delivery of cryotherapy in outpatient surgeries. Furthermore, traditional methods may lead to complications such as mucosal flap detachment, severe pain, and swelling.

Method used

A cryotherapy device with a probe shaft featuring a curved portion and varying flexibility has been designed, comprising a probe shaft, a housing, a handle, and an end effector. Through the varying flexibility and curved design, it is possible to safely locate and ablate nasal nerves within the nasal cavity, using cryofluid or other energy modes for treatment.

Benefits of technology

This technology enables safe and effective ablation of nasal nerves during outpatient surgery, reducing the risk of complications and improving treatment safety and patient experience.

Abstract

Disclosed herein are devices and methods for treating conditions such as rhinitis, wherein a distal end of a probe shaft is introduced through a nasal cavity, the distal end having an end effector with a first configuration having a low profile shaped to manipulate tissue within the nasal cavity. The distal end can be positioned proximate a nasal tissue region having at least one nasal nerve. Once properly positioned, the distal end can be reconfigured from the first configuration to a second configuration shaped to contact and follow the nasal tissue region, and the at least one nasal nerve can then be ablated via the distal end. The ablation can be performed using a variety of mechanisms, such as cryotherapy, and optionally under direct visualization.
