AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing binocular or synoptic devices contain multiple optical elements, resulting in bulky, expensive, and heavy devices that are difficult to wear on the bridge of the nose and face like glasses.

Method used

It adopts a lens design with a prism correction stage and a toroidal correction stage, and integrates prism correction and toroidal correction functions through a single intervention, reducing stereoscopic information and improving the perceived depth and realism of 2D flat screens.

Benefits of technology

It significantly enhances the depth perception and realism of 2D images without requiring source intervention, batteries, or post-processing, reduces visual fatigue, and improves image resolution and frame rate.

Abstract

An optical device, such as a lens, or comprising one or more lenses, is disclosed. Each of the one or more lenses integrates a prism stage and a toroidal stage. The prism stage is used to redirect the image of an object or scene such that the line of sight associated with one or both of the observer's eyes points directly forward toward the one or more lenses, thereby reducing the convergence angle between the eyes to zero or near zero. The toroidal stage is used to reshape the image such that the trapezoidal distortion caused by the image redirection by the prism stage is at least reduced, even if not eliminated, without affecting the reduction in convergence angle achieved by the image redirection by the prism stage. In the case of an optical device with two lenses, the prism stage and toroidal stage integrated into each lens operate in a manner that reduces or eliminates stereopsis and produces the same image or single-view image for each eye, allowing the observer to see the object or scene at optical infinity.
