AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing radar systems face challenges with low spatial resolution, inability to recognize objects with low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and difficulty in detecting hidden objects due to limited antennas and cost/size constraints, particularly in stereo radar systems used for autonomous driving.

Method used

A computer-implemented procedure using a stereo radar system with at least two radar sensors, each operating in monostatic, bistatic, or multistatic modes, combines radar signal data to enhance object detection by determining distance, radial speed, and positional information through spectrum analysis and machine learning algorithms.

Benefits of technology

Improves radar system performance by enhancing object recognition, especially for low SNR and hidden objects, without requiring extensive hardware or software adjustments, and supports applications like adaptive speed control and cross-traffic warnings in autonomous driving.

Abstract

A computer-implemented method for detecting one or more objects using at least two radar sensors (310; 312) of a stereo radar system (314), spaced apart from one another, is disclosed. The method comprises receiving first radar signal data and second radar signal data, which were determined using a first radar sensor (310) and a second radar sensor (312), respectively. Both radar signal data describe the characteristics of the respective radar signals detected by one of the two radar sensors (310; 312). Using the first and second radar signal data, one or more combinations of distance and radial velocity, comprising an intensity peak, are determined. For one or more of the respective combinations of distance and radial velocity, a first and a second spectrum (302; 304) are determined using the first and second radar signal data, describing the intensities as a function of the azimuth and elevation angles, respectively. By combining and comparing the first and second spectrums (302; 304), one or more positions of one or more objects are determined with respect to the azimuth and elevation angles.
