Abstract

An internal combustion engine has: a cylinder liner; a cylinder head; an intake valve; an exhaust valve; a piston; and an injector. The cylinder head and the intake valve are configured to create a vortex flow in a combustion chamber. The injector injects fuel outward in a radial direction along the cylinder liner from a central section of the combustion chamber. The piston has: a circumferential wall (520); and a plurality of projecting walls (530). Each of the projecting walls (530) has: a forward-facing surface (532); and a opposite-facing surface (534).The forward-directed surface (532) is arranged such that the momentum of a flame (B1) returning to the central section of the combustion chamber via the forward-directed surface (532) after collision with the circumferential wall (520) is greater than the momentum of a flame (B2) returning to the central section of the combustion chamber via the opposite-directed surface (534) after collision with the circumferential wall (520).
