AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing plastic container coatings lack sufficient barrier performance and resistance to erosive media, such as alkaline or acidic solutions, while also being environmentally unfriendly and costly.

Method used

The development of a gradient coat using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) with a high carbon content organosilicon coating, featuring a barrier zone with high Si-O-Si compounds and a passivation zone with high organic compounds, which gradually blend together to form a poreless and chemically stable layer.

Benefits of technology

The gradient coat achieves a significant improvement in barrier performance against gases and solvents, while maintaining resistance to erosive media, thereby making plastic containers suitable for storing sensitive chemicals without environmental harm.

Abstract

The present invention relates to the field of plastic coating by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). In particular, the present invention can be used to coat recyclable plastic containers for storing aggressive chemicals with a stable migration barrier. A method and coating are disclosed. The method can deposit a coating from a process gas mixture of at least one precursor and a reactive gas, where the process gas mixture is excited to form a plasma. By adjusting the reactive gas content in the process gas mixture and varying the excitation energy per unit mass, a gradient coat can be deposited on a plastic substrate to form a chemically resistant migration barrier.
