Abstract

The present invention generally relates to biologically based methods for cyanating metals, reducing metal-cyanide complexes, and hydrolyzing cyanide. More specifically, the present invention allows for the construction of an integrated synthetic biology system for metal leaching that can be deployed in a synthetic host (e.g., cyanide-producing Chromobacterium violaceum) for efficient precious metal recovery and toxic metal remediation from e-waste. The design and construction of this synthetic host can consist of up to four main components / modules: 1) synthetic biology-based cyanide production; 2) synthetic biology-based metal recovery; 3) synthetic biology-based cyanide degradation; and 4) a synthetic cycle for biological leaching.
