AI Technical Summary
There is a need for a distinct and stable cultivar of Nematanthus gregarius that exhibits unique variegated leaf patterns, particularly with an irregular light green center fading into an irregular yellow outer leaf and a thin, dark red leaf rim, which are not present in existing varieties.
The cultivar 'BINL-110919' is developed through asexual reproduction by top cuttings, showcasing these unique leaf characteristics that remain stable across varying environmental conditions.
The cultivar 'BINL-110919' consistently displays the desired variegated leaf pattern, distinguishing it from other Nematanthus varieties, and is suitable for cultivation under natural light conditions without artificial enhancement.

Abstract
Description
[0001] Latin name of the genus and species: Nematanthus gregarius.
[0002] Variety denomination: ‘BINL-110919’.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0003] The new cultivar is a product of a naturally-occurring branch mutation. The parent cultivar is the unpatented Nematanthus gregarius, the species itself. The new cultivar was found and selected by the inventor in September 2022 at a nursery in Nairobi, Kenya.
[0004] Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘BINL-110919’ was first performed in Nairobi, Kenya in May 2023, by top cuttings. ‘BINL-110919’ has since produced several generations and has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0005] The cultivar ‘BINL-110919’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
[0006] The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘BINL-110919’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘BINL-110919’ as a new and distinct Nematanthus cultivar:
[0007] 1. Distinctly variegated leaves with a unique combination of colors. Variegated leaves have an irregular light green center, fading out into an irregular yellow outer leaf. The young leaves have a very thin / narrow dark red leaf-rim / edge.PARENTAL COMPARISON
[0008] Plants of the new cultivar ‘BINL-110919’ are similar to the parent in most horticultural characteristics. However, plants of the new variety differ in the following:
[0009] 1. Leaves of the new variety are variegated with an irregular light green center, fading out into an irregular yellow outer leaf; young leaves have a very thin / narrow dark red leaf-rim / edge. Leaves of the parent are non-variegated with a glossy, fully dark green color on the leaf-upperside. The leaf-downside is light green.COMMERCIAL COMPARISONS
[0010] ‘BINL-110919’ can be compared to the commercial variety Nematanthus gregarius ‘Miami’, unpatented. The two varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics; however, the new variety differs in the following:
[0011] 1. Leaves of the new variety are variegated with an irregular light green center, fading out into an irregular yellow outer leaf; young leaves have a very thin / narrow dark red leaf-rim / edge. Leaves of this comparator are non-variegated, having a glossy, fully green color on the leaf-upperside. The leaf-downside is also fully green.
[0012] ‘BINL-110919’ can be compared to the unpatented commercial variety Nematanthus gregarius, ‘Variegata’. The two varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics; however, the new variety differs in the following:
[0013] 1. Leaves of the new variety are variegated with an irregular light green center, fading out into an irregular yellow outer leaf; young leaves have a very thin / narrow dark red leaf-rim / edge. Leaves of this comparator are non-variegated, having a glossy, irregular dark green leaf-rim and an irregular yellow-white leaf-center.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPH
[0014] The accompanying photograph illustrates in full color a close-up view of the foliage on a typical plant of ‘BINL-110919’ grown in a greenhouse in Nairobi, Kenya. This plant is approximately 10 weeks old, shown in a 12 cm container. The photograph was taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
[0015] In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Color Chart, sixth edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘BINL-110919’ plants in a glass greenhouse in Nairobi, Kenya. Temperatures ranged from 20° C. to 28° C. during the day, and 12° C. to 20° C. during the night. No artificial light, photoperiodic treatments or chemical treatments were given to the plants. Natural light conditions were approximately 2500 to 3000 fc of light. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plant types.
