Abstract
Description
METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR HANDLING NETWORK ENERGY SAVINGS AND MULTICAST AND BROADCAST TRANSMISSIONS
[0001] This application is based on and derives the benefit of Indian Provisional Applications 202341061751 filed on 13thSeptember 2023 and 202341074720 filed on 02ndNovember 2023, the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. The proposed embodiments relates to telecommunication network system. More particularly present disclosure relates to handle network energy savings and multicast and broadcast transmissions.
[0002] Fifth generation (5G) mobile communication technologies define broad frequency bands such that high transmission rates and new services are possible, and can be implemented not only in "Sub 6 gigahertz (GHz)" bands such as 3.5GHz, but also in "Above 6GHz" bands referred to as millimeter wave (mmWave) including 28GHz and 39GHz. In addition, it has been considered to implement sixth generation (6G) mobile communication technologies (referred to as Beyond 5G systems) in terahertz (THz) bands (for example, 95GHz to 3THz bands) in order to accomplish transmission rates fifty times faster than 5G mobile communication technologies and ultra-low latencies one-tenth of 5G mobile communication technologies.
[0003] At the beginning of the development of 5G mobile communication technologies, in order to support services and to satisfy performance requirements in connection with enhanced Mobile BroadBand (eMBB), Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communications (URLLC), and massive Machine-Type Communications (mMTC), there has been ongoing standardization regarding beamforming and massive multi input multi output (MIMO) for mitigating radio-wave path loss and increasing radio-wave transmission distances in mmWave, supporting numerologies (for example, operating multiple subcarrier spacings) for efficiently utilizing mmWave resources and dynamic operation of slot formats, initial access technologies for supporting multi-beam transmission and broadbands, definition and operation of BandWidth Part (BWP), new channel coding methods such as a Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) code for large amount of data transmission and a polar code for highly reliable transmission of control information, L2 pre-processing, and network slicing for providing a dedicated network specialized to a specific service.
[0004] Currently, there are ongoing discussions regarding improvement and performance enhancement of initial 5G mobile communication technologies in view of services to be supported by 5G mobile communication technologies, and there has been physical layer standardization regarding technologies such as Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) for aiding driving determination by autonomous vehicles based on information regarding positions and states of vehicles transmitted by the vehicles and for enhancing user convenience, New Radio Unlicensed (NR-U) aimed at system operations conforming to various regulation-related requirements in unlicensed bands, new radio (NR) user equipment (UE) Power Saving, Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) which is UE-satellite direct communication for providing coverage in an area in which communication with terrestrial networks is unavailable, and positioning.
[0005] Moreover, there has been ongoing standardization in air interface architecture / protocol regarding technologies such as Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) for supporting new services through interworking and convergence with other industries, Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) for providing a node for network service area expansion by supporting a wireless backhaul link and an access link in an integrated manner, mobility enhancement including conditional handover and Dual Active Protocol Stack (DAPS) handover, and two-step random access for simplifying random access procedures (2-step random access channel (RACH) for NR). There also has been ongoing standardization in system architecture / service regarding a 5G baseline architecture (for example, service based architecture or service based interface) for combining Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and Software-Defined Networking (SDN) technologies, and Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) for receiving services based on UE positions.
[0006] As 5G mobile communication systems are commercialized, connected devices that have been exponentially increasing will be connected to communication networks, and it is accordingly expected that enhanced functions and performances of 5G mobile communication systems and integrated operations of connected devices will be necessary. To this end, new research is scheduled in connection with eXtended Reality (XR) for efficiently supporting Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), Mixed Reality (MR) and the like, 5G performance improvement and complexity reduction by utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), AI service support, metaverse service support, and drone communication.
[0007] Furthermore, such development of 5G mobile communication systems will serve as a basis for developing not only new waveforms for providing coverage in terahertz bands of 6G mobile communication technologies, multi-antenna transmission technologies such as Full Dimensional MIMO (FD-MIMO), array antennas and large-scale antennas, metamaterial-based lenses and antennas for improving coverage of terahertz band signals, high-dimensional space multiplexing technology using Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM), and Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS), but also full-duplex technology for increasing frequency efficiency of 6G mobile communication technologies and improving system networks, AI-based communication technology for implementing system optimization by utilizing satellites and Artificial Intelligence (AI) from the design stage and internalizing end-to-end AI support functions, and next-generation distributed computing technology for implementing services at levels of complexity exceeding the limit of UE operation capability by utilizing ultra-high-performance communication and computing resources.
[0008] Network Energy Saving (NES) has become one of the most significant aspects recently considering the ever-increasing power consumption by wireless networks that serve billions of User Equipment's (UEs), and the associated high cost involved. The transmission and the reception by Radio Access Network (RAN) nodes typically account for around 22% of the overall power consumption by the communication networks. For enabling energy efficient networks operations, there is a need for efficient approaches that can achieve energy savings for the networks. Some of these approaches may include a special operation mode (for example, termed as NES mode) wherein the network nodes may apply Cell-discontinuous transmission (Cell-DTX) and / or Cell-discontinuous reception (Cell-DRX) to curtail power consumption by the network nodes.
[0009] NR MBS services can refer to multicast services where intended common contents are targeted to a group of UEs which have joined the multicast group in the multicast coverage area and broadcast services where intended contents may be targeted to all the UEs in the broadcast coverage area. This coverage area can be one radio cell or larger.
[0010] In the legacy system (i.e., 3GPP Release 17 MBS), the UE can receive broadcast services regardless of the Radio Resource Control (RRC) state of the UE; i.e., the UE can avail broadcast service in all RRC states viz. RRC_IDLE, RRC_INACTIVE and RRC_CONNECTED. Also, in the 3GPP Release 17 MBS, multicast service is limited to be accessible only in the RRC_CONNECTED state due to reliability constraints.
[0011] However, 3GPP Release 18 MBS is considering extending the accessibility of the multicast services also to the UEs in the RRC_INACTIVE state so that more UEs can access multicast services as well as the limitation of the number of active connections in the RRC_CONNECTED can be overcome. Further, in the legacy system, DRX configuration and mechanism for the multicast services, which was designed for operation in the RRC_CONNECTED state only, needs to be revisited for potential changes to work in the RRC_INACTIVE state.
[0012] One potential issue with the NES approaches relate to how to apply the NES mode / configurations and Cell-DRX and / or Cell-DTX mechanism for the (a) UEs which are configured and / or receiving MBS broadcast services in the at least one of RRC_IDLE, RRC_INACTIVE and RRC_CONNECTED state, (b) UEs which are configured and / or receiving MBS multicast services in the RRC_CONNECTED state and (c) UEs which are configured and / or receiving MBS multicast services in the RRC_INACTIVE state. At present, there is no defined approach or specification.
[0013] One potential issue with the NES relate to how to signal activation / deactivation indication status for SP CSI reporting configuration and / or sub-configurations on uplink control channel. The signaling approach is required to be efficient and effective from the signaling perspective and also be consistent in conjunction to the signaling approaches used in the legacy.
[0014] In Rel-15, Semi-Persistent CSI reporting on Physical Uplink Control Channel (PUCCH) Activation / Deactivation Medium Access Control (MAC) Control Element (CE) is introduced to activate-deactivate SP CSI configuration to be transmitted on PUCCH. The detailed approach is described in the prior art TS 38.321 as below:
[0015] [table 1]
[0016]
[0017] In Rel-18 NES, Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Radio Access Network Working Group 1 (known as RAN1 WG) is working on spatial domain (SD) adaptation scheme by e.g. some spatial components (antenna ports) are not used.
[0018] In Rel-15, the UE reports CSI on PUCCH, which assumed that all spatial components are active. Only for activated CSI configuration linked to Si bit, UE reports CSI on PUCCH.
[0019] In Rel-18, the UE reports CSI on PUCCH, which assumes that some spatial components are active. Which spatial components are assumed is called as “sub-configuration”.
[0020] 3GPP RAN1 WG agreed that for each CSI configuration, at most L (maybe up to 8 or 4) sub-configurations are configured. N out of L sub-configurations are activated. Then, the UE sends CSI reporting on PUCCH for each sub-configuration and configuration, assuming such activated N sub-configuration.
[0021] Thus, it is desired to address the above-mentioned disadvantages or other shortcomings or at least provide a useful alternative.

Then, the UE follows Active Time Procedure, i.e., the UE (101) may monitor PDCCH by using G-RNTI / G-CS-RNTI only in Cell-DTX Active Time.
[0120] In an embodiment, if the UE (101) is configured and / or receiving MBS multicast in RRC_CONNECTED state, the UE (101) may monitor PDCCH for G-RNTI and G-CS-RNTI when either 1) the cell is in Cell-DTX Active Time or 2) drx-RetransmissionTimerDLPTM for the G-RNTI / G-CS-RNTI is running.
[0121] In an embodiment, if the UE (101) is configured and / or receiving MBS multicast in RRC_CONNECTED state and if drx-onDurationTimerPTM or drx-InactivityTimerPTM or RetransmissionTimerDLPTM for this G-RNTI and / or G-CS-RNTI for MBS multicast is running, the UE (101) may monitor PDCCH by using G-RNTI and / or G-CS-RNTI for the MBS multicast configured for the cell only in Cell-DTX Active Time.
[0122] In an embodiment, if the UE (101) is configured and / or receiving MBS multicast in RRC_CONNECTED state, the UE (101) does not monitor multicast Semi-persistent Scheduling (SPS) occasions during Cell-DTX non-Active Period, if Cell-DTX is configured.
[0123] In an embodiment, Cell-DTX (Downlink) configuration may be configured in at least one of RRCRelease with SuspendConfig message and multicast MCCH message. If the UE (101) is configured with multicast reception in RRC_INACTIVE, the Cell-DTX configuration is useful. Then, the UE (101) may not monitor G-RNTI or multicast-MCCH-RNTI to enable more UE energy saving. The Cell-DTX configurations may be provided for the serving cell. In another embodiment, the Cell-DTX configurations may be provided for a cell-group (CG). In yet another embodiment, the Cell-DTX configurations may be provided for one or more neighboring cells. In yet another embodiment, the Cell-DTX configurations may be provided for a MAC entity; i.e., all cells belonging to the MAC entity have common configuration for Cell-DTX.
[0124] In an embodiment, the UE (101) may receive information to monitor PDCCH for activation / deactivation of Cell-DTX by group-signalling (i.e., Downlink Control Indication (DCI) signaling over PDCCH channel). The relevant information may include RNTI, search space, location of the DCI, cell or cell group identity, DRX configuration identity or index. For the DCI signalling, the Cell-DTX configuration and serving cell for which it is associated with is determined by the UE (101) by mapping ServCellIndex or serving cell identity or MAC entity identity or Cell Group (CG) identity or indexing of the configuration as provided in the RRCRelease and / or multicast MCCH message.
[0125] In an embodiment, the Cell-DRX (Uplink) configuration may be also configured. But in RRC_INACTIVE the UE (101) does not transmit anything, so Cell-DRX might not be so useful. That is, the UE (101) when configured or receiving multicast in RRC_INACTIVE state, ignores or invalidates the Cell-DRX configuration.
[0126] In an embodiment, all the Cell-DTX configurations (i.e., irrespective of whether the Cell-DTX configuration is in activated state or deactivated state) for the serving cell is provided in at least one of RRCRelease with SuspendConfig message and multicast MCCH message. The UE (101) can further receive the group signaling (i.e., DCI over PDCCH channel) and determine which of the Cell-DTX configurations are presently in activated state or in deactivated state. Accordingly, the UE (101) can act as per the activated Cell-DTX configurations for the serving cell while receiving multicast in the RRC_INACTIVE state.
[0127] In an embodiment, only the activated Cell-DTX configurations for the serving cell is provided in at least one of RRCRelease with SuspendConfig message and multicast MCCH message. That is, UE (101) is not required to receive the group signaling (i.e., DCI over PDCCH channel) and determine which of the Cell-DTX configurations are presently in activated state or in deactivated state. Accordingly, the UE (101) can act as per the activated Cell-DTX configurations for the serving cell while receiving multicast in the RRC_INACTIVE state.
[0128] In an embodiment, the UE (101) may store the Cell-DTX and / or Cell-DRX configurations that the UE (101) has received in the RRC_CONNECTED state through RRC reconfiguration message, while transiting to the RRC_INACTIVE state and may utilize the he Cell-DTX and / or Cell-DRX configurations for receiving the multicast in the RRC_INACTIVE state. The UE (101) can further receive the group signaling (i.e., DCI over PDCCH channel) and determine which of the Cell-DTX configurations are presently in activated state or in deactivated state. Accordingly, the UE (101) can act as per the activated Cell-DTX configurations.
[0129] In an embodiment, when the UE (101) which is configured and / or receiving multicast in RRC_INACTIVE, reselects to another cell, the UE (101) receives the multicast MCCH and / or group signalling (i.e., DCI signalling over PDCCH) on the reselected cell and determine the activated Cell-DTX configurations for the reselected cell. Accordingly, the UE (101) can act as per the activated Cell-DTX configurations for the reselected cell while receiving multicast in the RRC_INACTIVE state.
[0130] In an embodiment, in order to enhance the network energy savings further, the RRC_IDLE and / or RRC_INACTIVE UEs (101) are also informed about the Cell-DRX and / or Cell-DTX configurations through at least one of the SIB messages. Further, the activation and / or deactivation signalling for the Cell-DRX and / or Cell-DTX configurations may be received by RRC_IDLE and / or RRC_INACTIVE UEs from the group signalling (i.e., DCI over PDCCH). In another embodiment, only the activated Cell-DRX and / or Cell-DTX configurations are provided through at least one of the SIB messages.
[0131] Fig. 3 is a flow diagram that illustrates a method for handling multicast and broadcast transmissions in Network Energy Saving (NES) cells, according to the embodiments disclosed herein.
[0132] At block 301, the UE (101) determines whether the at least one cell-DTX configuration is in Active Period or Non-Active Period, when the at least one cell-DTX configuration is activated.
[0133] At block 303, the UE (101) monitors at least one Point to Multipoint (PTM) Multicast Traffic channel (MTCH) for least one Group-Radio Network Temporary Identifier (G-RNTI) and Group-Configured Scheduling-Radio Network Temporary Identifier (G-CS-RNTI) and Point to Point (PTP) MTCH channel for at least one Cell-Radio Network Temporary Identifier (C-RNTI) and Configured Scheduling-Radio Network Temporary Identifier (CS-RNTI) during Active Period of the at least one cell-DTX configuration to receive MBS multicast service.

[0170] Fig. 6 is a block diagram that illustrates a UE for signalling Semi-Persistent (SP) CSI report configuration activation and deactivation for NES cell, according to the embodiment as disclosed herein.
[0171] The User Equipment (601) includes a processor (603), a memory (605), an I / O interface (607), SP CSI report handler (609). Furthermore, the processor (603) of the UE (601) communicates with the memory (605), the I / O interface (607), and the SP CSI report handler (609). The processor (603) is configured to execute instructions stored in the memory (605) and to perform various processes. The processor (603) can include one or a plurality of processors, can be a general-purpose processor such as a central processing unit (CPU), an application processor (AP), or the like, a graphics-only processing unit such as a graphics processing unit (GPU), a visual processing unit (VPU), and / or an Artificial Intelligence (AI) dedicated processor such as a neural processing unit (NPU).
[0172] Furthermore, the memory (605) of the UE (601) includes storage locations that can be addressed through the processor (603). The memory (605) is not limited to volatile or non-volatile memory and can include one or more computer-readable storage media. Non-volatile storage elements such as magnetic hard disks, optical discs, floppy discs, flash memories, EPROM, or EEPROM memories can also be included in the memory (605). Further, the memory (605) of the UE (601) can store various information received from the network apparatus and. The UE (601) stores the information received in third signalling message. The third signalling message incudes several information such as SP CSI report configuration and an enhanced SP CSI report configuration.
[0173] The I / O interface (607) transmits information between the memory (605) and external peripheral devices, which are input-output devices associated with the UE (601). The I / O interface (607) receives various information from the network apparatus. This information can include, but is not limited to third signalling message. The third signalling message incudes several information such as SP CSI report configuration and an enhanced SP CSI report configuration.
[0174] The SP CSI report handler (609) communicates with the I / O interface (607) and memory (605) for signalling Semi-Persistent (SP) CSI report configuration activation and deactivation for NES cell. The SP CSI report handler (609) receive while in a NES cell, a third signalling message from a network apparatus that includes a SP CSI report configuration and an enhanced SP CSI report configuration to send the SP CSI report to the network apparatus, wherein the enhanced SP CSI report configuration comprises one or more sub-configurations. Further, the SP CSI report handler (609) receives while in a NES cell, from a network apparatus at least one of a SP CSI reporting activation or deactivation MAC CE and an enhanced SP CSI reporting activation or deactivation indication MAC CE to perform the SP CSI reporting to the network apparatus. Further, the SP CSI report handler (609) determines whether an activation / deactivation status of the SP CSI report configuration field in the legacy SP CSI reporting activation or deactivation MAC CE is set to 1 or 0, when the legacy SP CSI reporting activation or deactivation MAC CE is received by the UE (601). Further, the SP CSI report handler (609) interprets that at least one activated sub-configuration of enhanced SP CSI repor configuration remains activated and at least one deactivated sub-configuration of enhanced SP CSI report configuration remains deactivated, when the activation / deactivation status of the pertinent SP CSI report configuration field in the legacy SP CSI reporting activation or deactivation MAC CE is set to 1. Also, the SP CSI report handler (609) interprets that all sub-configurations of the enhanced SP CSI reporting configuration are deactivated, when the activation / deactivation status of the pertinent SP CSI report configuration field in the legacy SP CSI reporting activation or deactivation MAC CE is set to 0.
[0175] In an embodiment, the SP CSI report handler (609) determines whether the activation / deactivation status of pertinent SP CSI report configuration field in the legacy SP CSI reporting activation or deactivation MAC CE is set to 1 or 0. Further, the SP CSI report handler (609) interprets that all the sub-configuration of the enhanced SP CSI report configuration are deactivated, when the activation / deactivation status of the pertinent SP CSI configuration field in the legacy SP CSI reporting activation or deactivation MAC CE is set to 1. Also, the SP CSI report handler (609) interprets that all sub-configuration of the enhanced SP CSI reporting activation or deactivation MAC CE are deactivated and storing activation / deactivation status of the one or more sub-configurations of the enhanced SP CSI reporting activation or deactivation MAC CE, when the activation / deactivation status field in the legacy SP CSI reporting activation or deactivation MAC CE is set to 0.
[0176] Fig. 7 is a block diagram that illustrates network apparatus for signalling Semi-Persistent (SP) CSI report configuration activation and deactivation for NES cell, according to the embodiment as disclosed herein.
[0177] The network apparatus (701) includes a processor (703), a memory (705), an I / O interface (207), SP CSI report handler (709). Furthermore, the processor (703) of the network apparatus (701) communicates with the memory (705), the I / O interface (707), and the SP CSI report handler (709). The processor (703) is configured to execute instructions stored in the memory (705) and to perform various processes. The processor (703) can include one or a plurality of processors, can be a general-purpose processor such as a central processing unit (CPU), an application processor (AP), or the like, a graphics-only processing unit such as a graphics processing unit (GPU), a visual processing unit (VPU), and / or an Artificial Intelligence (AI) dedicated processor such as a neural processing unit (NPU).
[0178] Furthermore, the memory (705) of the network apparatus (701) includes storage locations that can be addressed through the processor (703). The memory (705) is not limited to volatile or non-volatile memory and can include one or more computer-readable storage media. Non-volatile storage elements such as magnetic hard disks, optical discs, floppy discs, flash memories, EPROM, or EEPROM memories can also be included in the memory (705). Further, the memory (705) of the network apparatus (501) can store various information received from the UE (601).
[0179] The I / O interface (707) transmits information between the memory (705) and external peripheral devices, which are input-output devices associated with the network apparatus (701). The I / O interface (707) receives various information from the UE (601).
[0180] The SP CSI report handler (709) communicates with the I / O interface (707) and memory (705) for signalling Semi-Persistent (SP) CSI report configuration activation and deactivation for NES cell. The SP CSI report handler (709) determine whether the UE (601) is capable to support the enhanced SP CSI report configuration. Further, SP CSI report handler (709) selects at least one of a legacy SP CSI reporting activation or deactivation MAC CE or an enhanced SP CSI reporting activation or deactivation MAC CE for transmission to the UE (601) based on resource efficiency. The enhanced SP CSI reporting configuration comprises one or more sub-configurations. Further, the SP CSI report handler (709) transmits at least one of a legacy SP CSI reporting activation or deactivation MAC CE or an enhanced SP CSI reporting activation or deactivation MAC CE on PUCCH based on the selection.
[0181] In an embodiment, the legacy MAC CE (Rel-15) can be used together with the enhanced MAC CE (rel-18).
[0182] In an embodiment, in some cases (e.g. SCell activation), 1-octet format and 4-octet format can be used together according to the NW's choice by considering resource efficiency (e.g. overhead size). In other cases (e.g. duplication activation), only one format is used by considering configuration. Considering Rel-18 MAC CE has relatively larger size with eLCID field, it would be advantageous to use Rel-15 MAC CE when it is efficient.
[0183] Option 1. Only one type of MAC CE is used, depending on configuration.
[0184] If there is at least one report configuration which includes PUCCH resources for SP CSI reporting in the indicated BWP and Serving Cell and includes report sub-configuration, Rel-18 MAC CE is used.
[0185] If there is no report configuration which includes PUCCH resources for SP CSI reporting in the indicated BWP and Serving Cell and includes report sub-configuration, Rel-15 MAC CE is used.
[0186] Option 2. Two MAC CEs are used by gNB implementation (gNB's choice).
[0187] In this case the UE behavior when the legacy MAC CE is received and sub-configuration should be specified in the spec:
[0188] When the UE (601) receives legacy MAC CE with Si=1(activate CSI configuration) is received:
[0189] Alt 1: All activated sub-configurations for the configuration with Si=1 remain activated. All deactivated sub-configurations for the configuration with Si=1 remain deactivated
[0190] Alt 2: Only configuration with Si=1 is activated. All sub-configurations for the configuration with Si=1 are deactivated.
[0191] When the UE (601) receives legacy MAC CE with Si=0 (deactivate CSI configuration) is received:
[0192] Alt 1: The configuration and all its sub-configurations are deactivated.
[0193] Alt 2: The configuration and all its sub-configurations are deactivated. But all activation / deactivation statuses of sub-configurations are stored and will be used in the next activation by the legacy MAC CE.
[0194] In an embodiment, an specification example is provided for the activation and deactivation of the Semi-persistent CSI reporting on PUCCH as follows:
[0195] Specification Example:
[0196] - Initial state and delivery to the lower layer needs to be specified.
[0197] [table 2]
[0198]
[0199] In an embodiment, UE (601) consider Cell-DRX configurations per serving cell and not report SP CSI for relevant configurations and sub-configurations on PUCCH for NES cell(s) among the serving cell(s) which are not Active Time of the Cell-DRX. That is, UE (601) performs selective behaviour for legacy cell and NES cell.
