AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

There is a need for reduced size, optical tag circuits that operate at maximum efficiencies for driving light emitters under limited power conditions, particularly in optically powered systems where power is harvested from incident light.

Method used

An optically powered electronic circuit that includes a storage element, a power source configured to generate electric current from incident light, and a regulation module. The circuit provides electric energy to a light emitter in pulses when the stored energy meets a threshold, ensuring efficient energy use and high peak power compared to average power.

Benefits of technology

The circuit achieves efficient light emission from optical tag circuits with reduced size, operating effectively under low power conditions by maximizing peak power while minimizing average power consumption, thus enhancing the efficiency of light emitters in optically powered systems.

Abstract

An optical tag circuit to drive a light emitter at low power is provided. The circuit includes a storage element configured to store electric energy, a power source configured to generate electric current and provide the electric current to the storage element for storage as electric energy, and a regulation module configured to determine a level of stored electric energy and compare the level to a threshold electric energy corresponding to a predetermined current threshold of the light emitter. The regulation module is configured such that when the level is determined to be greater than or equal to the threshold electric energy and information is to be transmitted by the circuit, the electric energy stored in the storage element is provided to the light emitter in a pulse, and when the level is below the threshold electric energy, the stored electric energy is restricted from reaching the light emitter. A peak power of the pulse is greater than an average power available from the power source.
