AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current techniques for shading in graphics processing rely on evaluating analytical bidirectional reflectance distribution (BRDF) functions, which are computationally complex and limited in their ability to generate realistic lighting.

Method used

A method using a machine learning model, specifically a neural network, to predict lighting values based on surface properties of materials associated with graphical content, reducing computational complexity compared to analytical BRDF models.

Benefits of technology

The neural shading method enables the rendering of scenes with realistic lighting in a less computationally intensive manner, improving efficiency and accuracy in graphics processing.

Abstract

This disclosure provides systems, devices, apparatus, and methods, including computer programs encoded on storage media, for neural shading. A processor may obtain a set of values that is indicative of surface properties of a set of materials associated with graphical content. The processor may provide, as an input to a machine learning model, the set of values, where the machine learning model includes learned parameters that are based on a plurality of values that are indicative of a plurality of surface properties of a plurality of materials. The processor may obtain, as an output of the machine learning model and based on the input and the learned parameters, a value associated with lighting corresponding to the surface properties of the set of materials associated with the graphical content. The processor may output an indication of the value.
