AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Reduced Capability (RedCap) NR devices face challenges with data buffering during extended sleep cycles, leading to data overwrite and failure to update paging policies based on higher priority data.

Method used

Implementing a content-aware data buffering and paging policy handling system, where downlink data is classified by content type, and buffering priorities are assigned accordingly. This system ensures that higher priority data is buffered and paging policies are updated appropriately.

Benefits of technology

This solution prevents data overwrite by prioritizing buffering based on content type and ensures that paging policies are updated in real-time, ensuring that RedCap NR devices receive the correct data prioritization during extended sleep cycles.

Abstract

Logic may receive, from a user plane function (UPF), a user plane (UP) function features information element including an extended DL buffer notification control (EDBNC) set to indicate that the UPF supports EDBNC. Logic may send a packet forwarding protocol (PFCP) session establishment request or a PFCP session modification request, including a buffer action rule (BAR) information element, wherein the BAR information element includes an extended DL buffer notification (EDBN) policy IE including an EDBN flag, wherein the flag is set to 1 to allow the UPF for the duration indicated by the DL buffering duration for buffering DL data for the UE. Logic may identify a data notification from the UPF associated with the UE. And logic may cause a radio access network (RAN) node to page the UE via the first interface after the UE resumes connection with the network.
