AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

In video/game streaming applications over networks, a constant bandwidth is not always guaranteed, leading to the need for adaptive adjustments in resolution or frame rate to maintain uninterrupted service without compromising user experience.

Method used

An apparatus with a processor assembly that compresses and decompresses videos at various resolutions and bitrates, calculates quality metrics, and generates data structures to identify a switching point for adjusting the video resolution based on network conditions.

Benefits of technology

The solution enables uninterrupted video streaming by adaptively adjusting resolution in response to changing network bandwidth, ensuring good user experience with minimal quality loss.

Abstract

Techniques are described for identifying a switching point at which to switch resolutions of a video during streaming due to changing network bitrates. First quality metrics at plural bitrates are determined (e.g., 414) between selected videos and respective output videos derived from compressing (410) and decompressing (412) the respective selected videos. Also, second quality metrics at plural bitrates are determined between the respective selected videos and upscaled videos generated by upscaling the output video. Using (512) the first and second quality metrics and bitrates, the switching point to change resolution during streaming is identified (514).
