[0038] In AI / ML based positioning, regarding the time domain channel measurements, Alternatives (a) and (b) are investigated.

[0039] In Alternative (a) (also referred to as “Alt. a” for brevity) , sample-based measurements may be applied. The sample-based measurements are composed of Nt' samples of the estimated channel response in time domain. The timing information for the Nt' samples are reported with a timing granularity T, where T=2kxTc. k represents the timing reporting granularity factor. Tc is the basic time unit for NR. The corresponding measurement (e.g., power if reported) corresponds to the measurement for the reported Nt' samples. Nt' and k can be signalled. The timing information is defined relative to a reference time. In the sample-based measurements, the timing information is an integer multiple of sampling periods.

[0040] In Alternative (b) (also referred to as “Alt. b” for brevity) , path-based measurements may be applied. Path-based measurements refer to the measurements in the existing specifications (up to Release18, e.g., DL PRS reference signal received path power (DL PRS-RSRPP) and UL SRS reference signal received path power (UL SRS-RSRPP) defined in 3GPP TS 38.215) including measurement reporting, with potential enhancements on the number of reported paths (if needed) . The path-based measurements may comprise measurement related to first detected path and measurement related to an additional detected  path. In path-based measurements, the timing information is according to the detected path timing and may not be an integer multiple of sampling periods.

[0041] At least one of sample-based measurements or path-based measurements may be used for determining an input of an AI / ML model.

[0042] As described above, the positioning accuracy enhancement may comprise at least one enabling method to ensure consistency between training and inference regarding network side additional conditions (if identified) for inference at UE for relevant positioning sub-use-cases.

[0043] Regarding the channel measurement for model input, 3GPP has been struggling in determining one of Alt. a and Alt. b. As a compromise and promising way forward, both of Alt. a and Alt. b may be supported.

[0044] Different measurement methods may be used by different devices. Different measurement methods may be used in model training and model inference.

[0045] Thus, there is a need to study how to support both sample-based measurements and path-based measurements and how to ensure consistency if sample-based measurements and path-based measurements are supported.

[0046] In view of the above, embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution for communication. In this solution, a location server determines information related to at least one method for channel measurements for positioning a terminal device based on an AI or ML model. The at least one method comprises one of the following: sample-based measurements, path-based measurements, or the sample-based measurements and the path-based measurements. In turn, the location server transmits the information related to the at least one method to a network device. With this solution, consistency between model training and model inference may be ensured if sample-based measurements and path-based measurements are supported.

[0047] Hereinafter, principle of the present disclosure will be described with reference to Figs. 1A to 11.

[0048] Fig. 1A illustrates a schematic diagram of an example communication network 100 in which embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. As shown in Fig. 1A, the communication network 100 comprises a terminal device 110, a network device 120 and a location server 130.

[0049] In some embodiments, the location server 130 may be a physical or logical entity that manages positioning for a target device by obtaining measurements and other location information from one or more positioning units and providing assistance data to positioning  units to help determine this. The location server 130 may also compute or verify the final location estimate.

[0050] In some embodiments, the location server 130 may comprise one of the following: an Enhanced Serving Mobile Location Centre (E-SMLC) , a Location Management Function (LMF) or Secure User Plane Location (SUPL) Location Platform (SLP) .

[0051] In some embodiments, positioning reference unit (PRU) functionality may be realized by the terminal device 110 with known location. In such embodiments, the terminal device 110 may be referred to as a PRU UE.

[0052] In some embodiments, PRU functionality may not be realized by the terminal device 110 with known location. In such embodiments, the terminal device 110 may be referred to as a Non-PRU UE.

[0053] In some embodiments, a PRU at a known location can perform positioning measurements (e.g., Reference Signal Time Difference (RSTD) , Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP) , UE reception-transmission (Rx-Tx) Time Difference measurements, etc. ) and report these measurements to a location server. In addition, the PRU can transmit Sounding Reference Signal (SRS) to enable TRPs to measure and report uplink (UL) positioning measurements (e.g., Return To Origin Time of Arrival (RTOA) , UL-Angle of Arrival (AoA) , gNB Rx-Tx Time Difference, etc. ) from PRU at a known location. The PRU measurements can be compared by the location server 130 with the measurements expected at the known PRU location to determine correction terms for other nearby target devices. The DL-and / or UL location measurements for other target devices can then be corrected based on the previously determined correction terms.

[0054] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may communicate with the location server 130 based on LPP. LPP is used point-to-point between the location server 130 and a target device in order to position the target device using position-related measurements obtained by one or more reference sources. For example, the target device may comprise a UE or SUPL Enabled Terminal (SET) .

[0055] In some embodiments, the network device 120 may communicate with the location server 130 based on a New Radio (NR) Positioning Protocol A (NRPPa) . The NRPPa procedure modules are divided into two modules as follows: NRPPa Location Information Transfer Procedures and NRPPa Management Procedures.

[0056] The NRPPa Location Information Transfer Procedures module contains procedures used to handle the transfer of positioning related information between NG-RAN Node and LMF. The Management Procedures module contains procedures that are not related  specifically to positioning, i.e., error handling.

[0057] It is to be understood that the number of network devices and terminal devices is only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitations. The communication network 100 may comprise any suitable number of network devices and terminal devices adapted for implementing embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0058] Fig. 1B illustrates another example communication network 100B in which embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. Specifically, Fig. 1B illustrates UE Positioning Overall Architecture applicable to NG-RAN. The communication network 100B may be considered as an example implementation of the communication network 100A.

[0059] As shown in Fig. 1B, the communication network 100B comprises the terminal device 110 and the location server 130 in Fig. 1A. The communication network 100B also comprises a NG-RAN node 140. The NG-RAN node 140 may comprise an ng-eNB 140-1 and a gNB 140-2. Each of the ng-eNB 140-1 and the gNB 140-2 may act as the network device 120 in Fig. 1A. The location server 130 may be implemented as an LMF 130.

[0060] The communication network 100B also comprises an access and mobility management functions (AMF) 150, an Enhanced Serving Mobile Location Centre (E-SMLC) 160 and a SUPL Location Platform (SLP) 170.

[0061] The AMF 150 receives a request for some location service associated with a particular target UE from another entity (e.g., GMLC or UE) or the AMF 150 itself decides to initiate some location service on behalf of a particular target UE (e.g., for an IMS emergency call from the UE) as described in TS 23.502 and TS 23.273. The AMF 150 then sends a location services request to an LMF 130. The LMF 130 processes the location services request which may include transferring assistance data to the target UE to assist with UE-based and / or UE-assisted positioning and / or may include positioning of the target UE. The LMF 130 then returns the result of the location service back to the AMF 150 (e.g., a position estimate for the UE. In the case of a location service requested by an entity other than the AMF 150 (e.g., a GMLC or UE) , the AMF 150 returns the location service result to this entity.

[0062] The NG-RAN node 140 may control several TRPs / TPs, such as remote radio heads, or DL-PRS-only TPs for support of PRS-based TBS.

[0063] The LMF 130 may have a proprietary signalling connection to the E-SMLC 160 which may enable the LMF 130 to access information from E UTRAN (e.g. to support the OTDOA for E-UTRA positioning method using downlink measurements obtained by a target UE of signals from eNBs and / or PRS-only TPs in E-UTRAN) . Details of the signalling  interaction between the LMF 130 and E-SMLC 160 are outside the scope of this specification.

[0064] The LMF 130 may have a proprietary signalling connection to the SLP 170. The SLP 170 is the SUPL entity responsible for positioning over the user plane.

[0065] In some embodiments, for training data collection of AI / ML based positioning, a training data sample can include a first set of information and a second set of information.

[0066] In some embodiments, the first set of information may comprise at least one of the following:

[0067] · a channel measurement,

[0068] · a quality indicator of the channel measurement, or

[0069] · a first time stamp of the channel measurement.

[0070] In some embodiments, the second set of information may comprise at least one of the following:

[0071] · a ground truth label,

[0072] · a quality indicator of the ground truth label, or

[0073] · a second time stamp of the ground truth label.

[0074] In some embodiments, the ground truth label may indicate a location of the terminal device 110. Alternatively, in some embodiments, the ground truth label may comprise a line of sight (LOS) indicator or a non-line of sight (NLOS) indicator, timing information (e.g., TDOA, RX-TX time difference, etc) .

[0075] As used herein, the term “ground truth label” may be used interchangeably with the term “ground truth” .

[0076] In some embodiments, UE-based positioning with UE-side model may be performed in the communication network 100A or 100B. In such embodiments, direct AI / ML positioning may be achieved. In such embodiments, the location server 130 may generate at least part of the second set of information and transmit the at least part of the second set of information to the terminal device 110. For example, the location server 130 may generate the second time stamp of the ground truth label and transmit the second time stamp of the ground truth label to the terminal device 110. Hereinafter, such embodiments are also referred to as Case 1.

[0077] In some embodiments, UE-assisted / LMF-based positioning with UE-side model may be performed in the communication network 100A or 100B. In such embodiments, AI / ML assisted positioning may be achieved. In such embodiments, a further terminal device different from the terminal device 110 may generate at least part of the second set of  information and transmit the at least part of the second set of information to the further terminal device. For example, the further terminal device may generate the second time stamp of the ground truth label and transmit the second time stamp of the ground truth label to the terminal device 110. Hereinafter, such embodiments are also referred to as Case 2a.

[0078] In some embodiments, UE-assisted / LMF-based positioning with LMF-side model may be performed in the communication network 100A or 100B. In such embodiments, direct AI / ML positioning may be achieved. In such embodiments, the terminal device 110 may generate the first set of information and transmit the first set of information to the location server 130. The terminal device 110 or a further terminal device may generate the second set of information and transmit the second set of information to the location server 130. For example, the terminal device 110 may generate the first time stamp of the channel measurement and the second time stamp of the ground truth label. In turn, the terminal device 110 may transmit the first time stamp of the channel measurement and the second time stamp of the ground truth label to the second device. Hereinafter, such embodiments are also referred to as Case 2b.

[0079] In some embodiments, NG-RAN node assisted positioning with gNB-side model may be performed in the communication network 100A or 100B. In such embodiments, AI / ML assisted positioning may be achieved. In such embodiments, the network device 120 may generate the first set of information and transmit the first set of information to the location server 130. For example, the network device 120 may generate the first time stamp of the channel measurement and transmit the first time stamp of the channel measurement to the location server 130. Hereinafter, such embodiments are also referred to as Case 3a.

[0080] In some embodiments, NG-RAN node assisted positioning with LMF-side model may be performed in the communication network 100A or 100B. In such embodiments, direct AI / ML positioning may be achieved. In such embodiments, the network device 120 or TRP may generate the first set of information and transmit the first set of information to the location server 130. For example, the network device 120 or TRP may generate the first time stamp of the channel measurement and transmit the first time stamp of the channel measurement to the location server 130. Hereinafter, such embodiments are also referred to as Case 3b.

[0081] Alternatively, in Case 3b, the terminal device 110 or TRP may generate the second set of information and transmit the second set of information to the location server 130. For example, the terminal device 110 or TRP may generate the second time stamp of the ground truth label and transmit the second time stamp of the ground truth label to the location server  130.

[0082] In some embodiments, the following process may be performed between the location server 130 and the terminal device 110.

[0083] At step 1, the location server 130 may request the terminal device 110 to report the supported functionalities at the terminal device 110 by LPP request capabilities message.

[0084] At step 2, the terminal device 110 sends LPP provide capabilities message to the location server 130 with the supported functionalities at the terminal device 110.

[0085] At step 3, the location server 130 sends the LPP provide assistance data message (which may contain network side additional condition) to the terminal device 110.

[0086] At step 4, the terminal device 110 reports the applicable functionality to the location server 130 by the LPP provide capabilities message.

[0087] At step 5, the location server 130 requests the inferred location information using the LPP request location information message.

[0088] At step 6, the terminal device 110 reports the inferred location using LPP provide location information message.

[0089] In some embodiments, the LPP provide capabilities message at step 2 and / or step 4 includes an indication indicating whether the terminal device 110 supports Alt. a or Alt. b.

[0090] Fig. 2 illustrates a signaling chart illustrating an example process 200 for Location Service Support by NG-RAN in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 200 will be described with reference to Fig. 1B.

[0091] In the process 200, when the AMF 150 receives a Location Service Request in case of the UE 110 is in CM-IDLE state, the AMF 150 performs a network triggered service Request as defined in TS 23.502 and TS 23.273 in order to establish a signalling connection with the UE 110 and assign a specific serving gNB or ng-eNB. The UE 110 is assumed to be in connected mode before the beginning of the flow shown in Fig. 2; that is, any signalling that might be required to bring the UE 110 to connected mode prior to step 1a is not shown. The signalling connection may, however, be later released (e.g. by the NG-RAN node 140 as a result of signalling and data inactivity) while positioning is still ongoing.

[0092] At step 1a, some entity in the 5GC (e.g. GMLC) requests some location service (e.g. positioning) for a target UE 110 to the serving AMF 150.

[0093] Alternatively, at step 1b, the serving AMF 150 for a target UE 110 determines the need for some location service (e.g. to locate the UE 110 for an emergency call) .

[0094] Alternatively, at step 1c, the UE 110 Requests some location service (e.g. positioning  or delivery of assistance data) to the serving AMF 150 at the NAS level.

[0095] At step 2, the AMF 150 transfers the location service Request to an LMF 130.

[0096] At step 3a, the LMF 130 instigates location procedures with the serving and possibly neighbouring ng-eNB or gNB in the NG-RAN –e.g. to obtain positioning measurements or assistance data.

[0097] In addition to step 3a or instead of step 3a, the LMF 130 instigates, at step 3b, location procedures with the UE 110 –e.g. to obtain a location estimate or positioning measurements or to transfer location assistance data to the UE 110.

[0098] At step 4, the LMF 130 provides a location service response to the AMF 150 and includes any needed results -e.g. success or failure indication and, if Requested and obtained, a location estimate for the UE 110.

[0099] If step 1a was performed, the AMF 150 returns, at step 5a, a location service response to the 5GC entity in step 1a and includes any needed results -e.g. a location estimate for the UE 110.

[0100] If step 1b occurred, the AMF 150 uses, at step 5b, the location service response received in step 4 to assist the service that triggered this in step 1b (e.g. may provide a location estimate associated with an emergency call to a GMLC) .

[0101] If step 1c was performed, the AMF 150 returns, at step 5c, a location service response to the UE 110 and includes any needed results -e.g. a location estimate for the UE 110.

[0102] Location procedures applicable to NG-RAN occur in steps 3a and 3b in Fig. 1C and are defined in greater detail in this specification. Other steps in Fig. 1C are applicable only to the 5GC and are described in greater detail and in TS 23.502 and TS 23.273.

[0103] Steps 3a and 3b can involve the use of different position methods to obtain location related measurements for a target UE 110 and from these compute a location estimate and possibly additional information like velocity. Positioning methods supported in this release are summarized in clause 4.3 and described in detail in clause 8 of TS 38.305.

[0104] Fig. 3 illustrates a signaling chart illustrating an example process 300 for communications in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 300 will be described with reference to Fig. 1A. The process 300 may involve the network device 120 and the location server 130 in Fig. 1A.

[0105] As shown in Fig. 3, the location server 130 determines 310 information related to at least one method for channel measurements for positioning the terminal device 110 based on an AI or ML model.

[0106] Hereinafter, an AI or ML model is also referred to as AI / ML model. In some embodiments, a model may be used interchangeably with AI model, ML model, AI or ML model, (AI / ML / auto-) encoder, channel state information (CSI) generation part or UE part / side model, functionality, AI-enabled feature / FG, which means a data driven algorithm that applies AI / ML techniques to generate a set of (AI / ML) outputs based on a set of (AI / ML) inputs.

[0107] Hereinafter, a method for channel measurements for positioning the terminal device 110 is also referred to as a measurement method for brevity.

[0108] The at least one measurement method comprises one of the following: sample-based measurements, path-based measurements, or the sample-based measurements and the path-based measurements.

[0109] In some embodiments, the information related to the at least one measurement method may comprise at least one of the following: the at least one measurement method, or the at least one parameter related to the at least one measurement method.

[0110] In some embodiments, information related to the sample-based measurements may comprise at least one of the following: the number of samples (represented by Nt’) , timing granularity (represented by T) , a timing reporting granularity factor (represented by k) a starting point of a sample window. T=2kxTc, where Tc is the basic time unit for NR.

[0111] In some embodiments, information related to the path-based measurements may comprises at least the number of paths. For example, the paths may comprise the first detected path and at least one additional path.

[0112] In some embodiments, the location server 130 may receive capability information from the terminal device 110. The capability information indicates that the terminal device 110 supports the information related to the at least one measurement method. The location server 130 may determine the information related to the at least one measurement method based on the capability information.

[0113] In turn, the location server 130 transmits 320 the information related to the at least one measurement method to the network device 120.

[0114] Upon receiving the information related to the at least one measurement method, the network device 120 configures 330, based on the information related to at least one measurement method, transmission of reference signals for the channel measurements.

[0115] With the process 300, consistency between model training and model inference may be ensured if sample-based measurements and path-based measurements are supported.

[0116] In some embodiments, the location server 130 may transmit the information related  to the at least one measurement method in a procedure associated with positioning reference signal (PRS) configuration exchange for downlink (DL) positioning based on DL-PRS measurement. For example, a procedure associated with PRS configuration exchange may comprise a PRS Configuration Exchange procedure.

[0117] In some embodiments, the procedure associated with PRS Configuration Exchange is initiated by the location server 130 to request the network device 120 to configure or update (i.e., turn off) PRS transmission.

[0118] In such embodiments, the location server 130 or the network device 120 may determine the information related to the at least one measurement method based on at least one of the following: the received capability information from the terminal device 110, or the performance of two models related to sample-based measurements and path-based measurements if the location server 130 has two models respectively.

[0119] In such embodiments, the location server 130 may indicate which measurement methods to be used by the terminal device 110 in the procedure associated with the PRS Configuration Exchange for DL positioning based on DL-PRS measurement.

[0120] For example, in one of Case 2b, Case 1, Case 2a, the location server 130 may indicate which measurement methods to be used by the terminal device 110 in the procedure associated with the PRS Configuration Exchange for DL positioning based on DL-PRS measurement.

[0121] For example, in Case 2b, there is measurements report to the location server 130 for model training. In Case 1 or Case 2a, there is measurement report to the location server 130 for model training, and then model is transferred to the terminal device 110.

[0122] Some embodiments of transmitting the information related to the at least one measurement method will be described with reference to Fig. 4, Table 1 and Table 2 later.

[0123] The network device 120 may use the information related to the at least one measurement method from the location server 130 to configure DL-PRS transmission by the at least one indicated TRP. For example, the network device 120 may transmit the information related to the at least one measurement method to the terminal device 110 in a DL-PRS configuration.

[0124] The terminal device 110 may measure and report the measurements to the location server 130 based on the information related to the at least one measurement method in the DL-PRS configuration.

[0125] In some embodiments, if the location server 130 does not transmit the information related to the at least one measurement method to the network device 120, it means a  predefined, preconfigured or default measurement method among Alt. a and Alt. b may be used by the terminal device 110.

[0126] In some embodiments, the location server 130 may transmit, to the network device 120, a dedicated message in the procedure associated with PRS configuration exchange. The dedicated message may comprise the information related to the at least one measurement method. This will be described with reference to Fig. 4.

[0127] Fig. 4 illustrates a signaling chart illustrating an example process 400 for communications in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 400 may be considered as an example implementation of the process 300. For the purpose of discussion, the process 400 will be described with reference to Fig. 1A. The process 400 may involve the network device 120 and the location server 130 in Fig. 1A.

[0128] As shown in Fig. 4, the location server 130 determines 410 the information related to at least one measurement method. The action 410 is similar to the action 310 in Fig. 3. Details of this action are omitted for brevity.

[0129] The location server 130 initiates a procedure associated with PRS configuration exchange by transmitting 420 a PRS CONFIGURATION REQUEST message to the network device 120 (such as the gNB 140-2 in Fig. 1B) .

[0130] The location server 130 transmits 430, to the network device 120, a dedicated message in the procedure associated with PRS configuration exchange. For example, the dedicated message may comprise a MEASUREMENT METHOD INDICATION message. The MEASUREMENT METHOD INDICATION message may comprise the information related to the at least one measurement method.

[0131] In some embodiments, the PRS CONFIGURATION REQUEST message may comprise a PRS Configuration Request Type information element (IE) and a PRS Transmission Off Information IE.

[0132] If the PRS Configuration Request Type IE is set to “configure” , the network device 120 may use 440 the information in the Requested DL PRS Transmission Characteristics IE to configure DL-PRS transmission by the at least one indicated TRP.

[0133] If the PRS Configuration Request Type IE is set to “off” , the network device 120 may, if supported, use the information in the PRS Transmission Off Information IE to turn off the DL-PRS transmission for the at least one indicated TRP, at least one PRS Resource Set, or at least one PRS Resource.

[0134] In some embodiments, if DL-PRS transmission is successfully configured or updated for at least one of the TRPs, the network device 120 may transmit a PRS  CONFIGURATION RESPONSE message to the location server 130.

[0135] In some embodiments, the PRS CONFIGURATION RESPONSE message may comprise an indication indicating one or more methods for the channel measurements used by the terminal device 110. The one or more methods for the channel measurements may comprise one of the following: sample-based measurements, path-based measurements, or the sample-based measurements and the path-based measurements.

[0136] In some embodiments, the PRS CONFIGURATION REQUEST message may comprise a dedicated IE comprising the information related to the at least one measurement method. For example, the dedicated IE may comprise a “measurement methods” IE comprising the information related to the at least one measurement method. In such embodiments, the location server 130 does not transmit the MEASUREMENT METHOD INDICATION message in Fig. 4.

[0137] Table 1 gives an example of IEs in the PRS CONFIGURATION REQUEST message.

[0138] Table 1

[0139] As shown in Table 1, the PRS CONFIGURATION REQUEST message comprises a “measurement methods” IE comprising the information related to the at least one measurement method.

[0140] If the “measurement methods” IE is set to “Alt. a” , it means that the location server 130 indicates sample-based measurements and parameters related to sample-based measurements are to be used by the terminal device 110.

[0141] If the “measurement methods” IE is set to “Alt. b” , it means that the location server 130 indicates path-based measurements and parameters related to path-based measurements are to be used by the terminal device 110.

[0142] If the “measurement methods” IE is set to “Alt. a and Alt. b” , it means that the location server 130 indicates sample-based measurements and parameters related to sample-based measurements and parameters as well as path-based measurements and parameters related to path-based measurements are to be used by the terminal device 110.

[0143] In some embodiments, the PRS CONFIGURATION REQUEST message may comprise a Requested DL PRS Transmission Characteristics IE comprising the information related to the at least one measurement method. The Requested DL PRS Transmission Characteristics IE may contain the requested PRS configuration for transmission by the location server 130. In such embodiments, the location server 130 does not transmit the MEASUREMENT METHOD INDICATION message in Fig. 4.

[0144] Table 2 gives an example of IEs in the Requested DL PRS Transmission Characteristics IE.

[0145] Table 2

[0146] As shown in Table 2, the Requested DL PRS Transmission Characteristics IE comprises a “measurement methods” IE comprising the information related to the at least one measurement method.

[0147] If the “measurement methods” IE is set to “Alt. a” , it means that the location server 130 indicates sample-based measurements and parameters related to sample-based measurements are to be used by the terminal device 110.

[0148] If the “measurement methods” IE is set to “Alt. b” , it means that the location server 130 indicates path-based measurements and parameters related to path-based measurements are to be used by the terminal device 110.

[0149] If the “measurement methods” IE is set to “Alt. a and Alt. b” , it means that the location server 130 indicates sample-based measurements and parameters related to sample-based measurements and parameters as well as path-based measurements and parameters related to path-based measurements are to be used by the terminal device 110.

[0150] Fig. 5 illustrates a signaling chart illustrating an example process 500 for communications in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 500 may be considered as an example implementation of the process 300. For the purpose of discussion, the process 500 will be described with reference to Fig. 1A. The process 500 may involve the terminal device 110, the network device 120 and the location server 130 in Fig. 1A.

[0151] As shown in Fig. 5, the location server 130 determines 510 the information related to at least one measurement method. The action 510 is similar to the action 310 in Fig. 3. Details of this action are omitted for brevity.

[0152] The location server 130 transmits 520, to the network device 120, the information related to the at least one measurement method.

[0153] In some embodiments, the location server 130 initiates a procedure associated with PRS configuration exchange 130 to request the network device 120 (such as the gNB 140-1  in Fig. 1B) to configure or update (i.e., turn off) PRS transmission by transmitting a PRS CONFIGURATION REQUEST message to the network device 120.

[0154] In some embodiments, the location server 130 may transmit a dedicated message in the procedure associated with PRS configuration exchange. The dedicated message may comprise the information related to the at least one measurement method.

[0155] Alternatively, in some embodiments, the PRS CONFIGURATION REQUEST message may comprise a dedicated IE comprising the information related to the at least one measurement method.

[0156] Alternatively, in some embodiments, the PRS CONFIGURATION REQUEST message may comprise a Requested DL PRS Transmission Characteristics IE comprising the information related to the at least one measurement method.

[0157] The terminal device 110 transmits 530, to the network device 120, an indication indicating one or more methods for the channel measurements supported by the terminal device 110. For example, the terminal device 110 may transmit a UE feature radio resource control (RRC) report to the network device 120. The UE feature RRC report may comprise the indication indicating one or more methods for the channel measurements supported by the terminal device 110. The one or more methods for the channel measurements may comprise one of the following: sample-based measurements, path-based measurements, or the sample-based measurements and the path-based measurements.

[0158] The network device 120 uses the information in the Requested DL PRS Transmission Characteristics IE, the indication received from the terminal device 110, and information related to the at least one measurement method received from the location server 130 to configure DL-PRS transmission by the at least one indicated TRP.

[0159] In some embodiments, in order to configure the DL-PRS transmission, the network device 120 may transmit a DL-PRS configuration to the terminal device 110. The DL-PRS configuration may comprise the information related to the at least one measurement method.

[0160] In turn, the terminal device 110 may measure and report the measurements to the location server 130 based on the information related to the at least one measurement method in the DL-PRS configuration.

[0161] In some embodiments, if the network device 120 does not transmit the information related to the at least one measurement method to the terminal device 110, it means a predefined, preconfigured or default measurement method among Alt. a and Alt. b may be  applied.

[0162] In some embodiments, the location server 130 may transmit the information related to the at least one measurement method in a procedure associated with Positioning Information Exchange for uplink (UL) positioning based on UL sounding reference signal (SRS) measurement. For example, the procedure associated with Positioning Information Exchange may comprise a Positioning Information Exchange procedure.

[0163] In some embodiments, the procedure associated with Positioning Information (including SRS configuration) Exchange is initiated by the location server 130 to request to the network device 120 positioning information for the terminal device 110.

[0164] The location server 130 transmits the information related to the at least one measurement method to the network device 120 in the procedure associated with this Positioning Information Exchange. The at least one measurement method is to be used by the network device 120. Some embodiments of transmitting the information related to the at least one measurement method will be described with reference to Fig. 6, Table 3 and Table 4 later.

[0165] In some embodiments, in Case 3a and / or Case 3b, the location server 130 may transmit the information related to the at least one measurement method to the network device 120 in the procedure associated with this Positioning Information Exchange.

[0166] In some embodiments, in Case 3b, there may be measurements report to the location server 130 for model training.

[0167] In some embodiments, in Case 3a, there may be measurement report to the location server 130 for model training, and then model is transferred to the network device 120.

[0168] The network device 120 may take this information (e.g., Positioning Information Exchange, measurement methods) into account when configuring SRS transmissions for the terminal device 110.

[0169] In turn, the network device 120 measures and reports the measurements to the location server 130 based on the information related to the at least one measurement method from the location server 130.

[0170] In some embodiments, if the location server 130 does not transmit the information related to the at least one measurement method to the network device 120, it means a predefined, preconfigured or default measurement method among Alt. a and Alt. b may be used by the network device 120.

[0171] In some embodiments, the location server 130 may transmit, to the network device 120, a dedicated message in the procedure associated with Positioning Information Exchange. The dedicated message may comprise the information related to the at least one measurement  method. This will be described with reference to Fig. 6.

[0172] Fig. 6 illustrates a signaling chart illustrating an example process 600 for communications in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 600 may be considered as an example implementation of the process 300. For the purpose of discussion, the process 600 will be described with reference to Fig. 1A. The process 600 may involve the network device 120 and the location server 130 in Fig. 1A.

[0173] As shown in Fig. 6, the location server 130 determines 610 the information related to at least one measurement method. The action 610 is similar to the action 310 in Fig. 3. Details of this action are omitted for brevity.

[0174] The location server 130 transmits initiates the procedure associated with Positioning Information Exchange by transmitting 620 a POSITIONING INFORMATION REQUEST message to the network device 120.

[0175] The location server 130 transmits 630 a dedicated message in the procedure associated with Positioning Information Exchange. For example, the dedicated message may comprise a MEASUREMENT METHOD INDICATION message. The MEASUREMENT METHOD INDICATION message may comprise the information related to the at least one measurement method.

[0176] If the Requested SRS Transmission Characteristics IE is included in the POSITIONING INFORMATION REQUEST message, the network device 120 may take this information into account when configuring SRS transmissions for the terminal device 110. For example, the network device 120 may configure 640 SRS transmissions based on the information in the Requested SRS Transmission Characteristics IE and the information related to the at least one measurement method in the MEASUREMENT METHOD INDICATION message.

[0177] Then, the network device 120 may transmit 650 a POSITIONING INFORMATION RESPONSE message to the location server 130. The POSITIONING INFORMATION RESPONSE message may comprise an SRS Configuration IE and an SFN Initialisation Time IE.

[0178] Additionally, the network device 120 may transmit 660 a MEASUREMENT METHOD RESPONSE message to the location server 130. The MEASUREMENT METHOD RESPONSE message may comprise an indication indicating one or more measurement methods for the channel measurements used by the network device 120. The  one or more methods for the channel measurements may comprise one of the following: sample-based measurements, path-based measurements, or the sample-based measurements and the path-based measurements.

[0179] Alternatively, in some embodiments, the POSITIONING INFORMATION REQUEST message may comprise the information related to the at least one measurement method. In such embodiments, the location server 130 does not transmit the MEASUREMENT METHOD INDICATION message in Fig. 6.

[0180] In some embodiments, the POSITIONING INFORMATION REQUEST may comprise a dedicated IE comprising the information related to the at least one measurement method. For example, the dedicated IE may comprise a “Requested Measurement Method” IE comprising the information related to the at least one measurement method. In such embodiments, the location server 130 does not transmit the MEASUREMENT METHOD INDICATION message in Fig. 6.

[0181] In some embodiments, if the “Requested Measurement Method” IE is included in the POSITIONING INFORMATION REQUEST message, the network device 120 may take this information into account when performing the SRS measurement, and the network device 120 may include a “Measurement Method” IE in the POSITIONING INFORMATION RESPONSE message.

[0182] Table 3 gives an example of IEs in the POSITIONING INFORMATION REQUEST message.

[0183] Table 3

[0184] As shown in Table 3, the POSITIONING INFORMATION REQUEST message comprises a “Requested Measurement Method” IE comprising the information related to the at least one measurement method.

[0185] If the “Requested Measurement Method” IE is set to “Alt. a” , it means that the location server 130 indicates sample-based measurements and parameters related to sample-based measurements are to be used by the network device 120.

[0186] If the “Requested Measurement Method” IE is set to “Alt. b” , it means that the location server 130 indicates path-based measurements and parameters related to path-based measurements are to be used by the network device 120.

[0187] If the “Requested Measurement Method is set to “Alt. a and Alt. b” , it means that the location server 130 indicates sample-based measurements and parameters related to sample-based measurements and parameters as well as path-based measurements and parameters related to path-based measurements are to be used by the network device 120.

[0188] In some embodiments, the network device 120 may include a “Measurement Method” IE in the POSITIONING INFORMATION RESPONSE message.

[0189] If the “Measurement Method” IE is set to “Alt. a” , it means that sample-based measurements and parameters related to sample-based measurements are used by the network device 120.

[0190] If the “Measurement Method” IE is set to “Alt. b” , it means that path-based  measurements and parameters related to path-based measurements are used by the network device 120.

[0191] If the “Measurement Method is set to “Alt. a and Alt. b” , it means that sample-based measurements and parameters related to sample-based measurements and parameters as well as path-based measurements and parameters related to path-based measurements are used by the network device 120.

[0192] Alternatively, in some embodiments, the POSITIONING INFORMATION REQUEST message may comprise a Requested SRS Transmission Characteristics IE comprising the information related to the at least one measurement method. The Requested SRS Transmission Characteristics IE may contain the requested SRS configuration for the terminal device 110. In such embodiments, the location server 130 does not transmit the MEASUREMENT METHOD INDICATION message in Fig. 6.

[0193] Table 4 gives an example of IEs in the Requested SRS Transmission Characteristics IE.

[0194] Table 4

[0195] As shown in Table 4, the Requested SRS Transmission Characteristics IE comprises a “Measurement Method” IE comprising the information related to the at least one measurement method.

[0196] If the “Measurement Method” IE is set to “Alt. a” , it means that the location server 130 indicates sample-based measurements and parameters related to sample-based measurements are to be used by the network device 120.

[0197] If the “Measurement Method” IE is set to “Alt. b” , it means that the location server 130 indicates path-based measurements and parameters related to path-based measurements are to be used by the network device 120.

[0198] If the “Measurement Method is set to “Alt. a and Alt. b” , it means that the location server 130 indicates sample-based measurements and parameters related to sample-based measurements and parameters as well as path-based measurements and parameters related to path-based measurements are to be used by the network device 120.

[0199] In some embodiments, the location server 130 may transmit a message in a procedure which is not associated with a reference signal configuration. The message may comprise the information related to the at least one measurement method.

[0200] In some embodiments, the procedure which is not associated with a reference signal configuration may comprise an LCM procedure for the AI or ML model. This will be described with reference to Fig. 7.

[0201] Fig. 7 illustrates a signaling chart illustrating an example process 700 for communications in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 700 may be considered as an example implementation of the process 300. For the purpose of discussion, the process 700 will be described with reference to Fig. 1A. The process 700 may involve the terminal device 110 in Fig. 1A and a network 705. The network 705 may be implemented as the network device 120 or the location server 130 in Fig. 1A.

[0202] Generally, Fig. 7 illustrates an LCM procedure for the AI or ML model. The location server 130 may transmit the information related to the at least one measurement method in the LCM procedure.

[0203] As shown in Fig. 7, the network 705 sends 710 a UECapabilityEnqiry message to initiate the procedure to the terminal device 110 reporting its AI / ML supported functionalities.

[0204] For example, the network 705 may enquire the terminal device 110 about one or more measurement method supported by the terminal device 110 via the UECapabilityEnqiry  message.

[0205] The terminal device 110 sends 720 a UECapablityInformation message to the network 705, containing supported functionalities at the terminal device 110.

[0206] Supported functionalities refer to functionalities that the terminal device 110 can indicate by using UE capability information (via RRC / LPP signalling) .

[0207] Activated functionalities refer to functionalities already enabled for performing inference.

[0208] For example, the UECapablityInformation message may comprise an indication indicating one or more measurement method supported by the terminal device 110.

[0209] At action 730, following configurations are provided from the network 705 to the terminal device 110:

[0210] 1) The terminal device 110 is allowed to do UAI reporting via Other Configuration.

[0211] 2) The network 705 may provide NW-side additional condition.

[0212] Between the action “730” and action “740” , the terminal device 110 decides the applicable functionalities based on NW-side additional conditions (if provided) , UE-side additional conditions (internally known by the terminal device 110) and model availability in device.

[0213] The terminal device 110 reports 740 applicable functionality in the following scenarios:

[0214] 1) Upon being configured to provide applicable functionality and upon change of applicable functionality via UAI;

[0215] 2) As response to NW-side additional condition requesting applicable functionality reporting in 730.

[0216] Applicable functionalities refer to functionalities that the terminal device 110 is ready to apply for inference.

[0217] For example, the terminal device 110 may transmit, in the action 740, an indication indicating one or more measurement method supported by the terminal device 110.

[0218] The network 705 configures 750 inference configuration to the terminal device 110 after applicable functionality reporting, if inference configuration based on supported functionality is not provided in the action 730 (i.e. inference configuration is provided in the  action 750) .

[0219] If inference configuration based on supported functionality is provided in the action 730, it is up to implementation of the network 705 whether to provide an updated configuration or not.

[0220] For example, the network 705 may transmit the information related to the at least one method to the terminal device 110 in the action 750.

[0221] In action 760, activation, deactivation, inference or monitoring of the AI / ML model may be performed.

[0222] In some embodiments, the location server 130 may transmit a message in a procedure which is not associated with a reference signal configuration. The message may comprise a higher level configuration comprising the information related to the at least one measurement method.

[0223] In some embodiments, the information related to the at least one measurement method is for a validity area where a channel measurement configuration is valid.

[0224] Alternatively, in some embodiments, the information related to the at least one measurement method is for a cell.

[0225] Alternatively, in some embodiments, the information related to the at least one measurement method is for a bandwidth part.

[0226] In some embodiments, the location server 130 may receive, from the network device 120 or the terminal device 110, an indication in association with at least one collected data sample or at least one data sample set. The indication indicates one or more measurement methods for the channel measurements used by the network device 120 or the terminal device 110. In such embodiments, the location server 130 may perform training or inference of one or more AI or ML models based on the at least one collected data sample or the at least one data sample set.

[0227] For example, the location server 130 may perform training or inference of an AI or ML model #a based on a data sample set with sample-based measurements and parameters related to sample-based measurements.

[0228] For example, the location server 130 may perform training or inference of an AI or ML model #b based on a data sample set with path-based measurements and parameters related to path-based measurements.

[0229] In some embodiments, in model inference, for input data associated with measurement methods Alt. a or Alt. b, the model inference entity uses the corresponding mode for the inference.
