AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing logging while drilling tools for measuring formation properties are expensive to build, operate, and maintain, increasing drilling costs, and determining the conditions of underbalanced, overbalanced, and balanced drilling is difficult without specialized tools.

Method used

A computational model that relates drilling performance parameters to petrophysical formation properties, allowing wellbore pressure sweeping and data analysis to determine formation properties without specialized logging tools, using a drill string with coiled tubing and adjusting drilling parameters to maintain desired drilling conditions.

Benefits of technology

Reduces drilling costs by eliminating the need for specialized logging tools and accurately determines formation properties, enabling efficient wellbore direction based on petrophysical data, thereby optimizing drilling operations.

Abstract

Methods and systems for drilling a wellbore that traverses a subterranean formation employ a computational model that relates input data representing at least one drilling performance parameter (or change therein) at one or more drilling conditions to output data representing at least one petrophysical formation property. Data representing at least one drilling performance parameter (or change therein) at one or more drilling conditions while drilling is determined by sweeping wellbore pressure over a range of pressures and measuring and analyzing wellbore pressures and associated drilling performance parameters, and such data is used as input data to the computational model, which generates output data representing at least one petrophysical formation property associated with the input data. The data output by the model can be added to well log of formation properties, which can be used to set or adjust the direction of drilling.
